On a spring day, Guinness World Records held a ceremony in Bournemouth to award local lifeguard Chris Lewis the title. Lewis, 74, began working at the Dorset resort when he was 16. “It’s the best job in the world,” he said. “You’re working and helping people. What could be better ”
His colleagues were just half his age. But he is still fighting fit. Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeguards must complete a 400m pool swim in under 7.5 minutes. They have to do a 25m pool swim underwater and a 25-metre surface swim consecutively in under 50 seconds and run 200m along the beach in under 40 seconds. The tests are still reasonably comfortable for Lewis. All winter he has been doing 3,000 metres of sea swimming each month.
Lewis’s adventure began in 1965 when a police officer spotted that he was a keen swimmer and suggested he get his lifesaving badges. The following year he began volunteering as a lifeguard at the age of 16. Then he became part of the RNLI lifeguards in 2001 and began providing beach patrols for local authorities.
Now the RNLI patrols more than 240 beaches across the UK. Lewis laughed when asked if he had seen many changes. “The RNLI’s equipment in 2024 includes jetskis, rescue boats and quad bikes. When I started, we had a T-shirt, swimming trunks, a swimming hat, a coat if you were lucky and a rescue tube. It was really very different.”
His most memorable rescue took place in 2010 when three children got into trouble while swimming. There was a combination of wind and a lively spring tide. One of them was being hurled into a rock with severe cuts. The other two were being “knocked around” by the waves. Lewis swam out just with a rescue tube but managed to get all three back.
Over the years, he has performed hundreds of rescues. He says giving advice that prevents people getting into trouble is preferable to carrying out rescues. “I would love to go through the whole of summer without having to rescue anybody.”
24. Why is the training of RNLI mentioned
A. To explain the importance of swimming skills. B. To stress Lewis’s efforts and capacity.
C. To show demands of being a safeguard. D. To describe the test process of fitness swimming
25. What made Lewis begin his life-saving career
A. His voluntary experience. B. His passion for swimming.
C. An invitation from RNLI. D. A police officer’s suggestion.
26. What can be inferred from Lewis’s words in Paragraph 4
A. RNLI cares for the safety of lifeguards. B. RNLI currently needs more lifeguards.
C. Lifeguard work was not easy in the past. D. The former lifeguards were more skilled.
27. Which of the following best describes Lewis
A. Devoted and caring. B. Selfless and honest.
C. Determined and humorous. D. Generous and ambitious.

It probably won’t surprise you that teens are texting more than ever before. Experts show great concern for teen texting. Students might not learn correct grammar and spelling if they write a lot of text messages. Also all that texting takes away from hours that could be spent studying, exercising, pursuing hobbies, or talking with others face to face. Some kids even sleep with their phones beneath their pillows and wake up several times during the night to text.
Dr. Elizabeth Dowdell points out teens need to learn that they can—and should—turn off their phones sometimes. She and her team had two teenagers, Kenny and Franchesca, carry out an experiment. They should obey the rules: No phone for 48 hours. No computer or Internet either, unless it was for schoolwork. Would these two teenagers be able to do it
“I think I’m going to feel really alone,” Kenny worried. Franchesca was nervous but brave. “I’m excited for the challenge,” she said. “I don’t know what’s going to happen.” They handed their phones to their mothers for safekeeping. The challenge was on.
The team caught up with Kenny and Franchesca after 48 phone-free hours. “Wow, it was pure suffering,” Kenny joked. “Though life with no phone wasn’t easy,” he admitted, “it had benefits. I felt less stressed because I didn’t have to be involved.” Sure, Kenny missed his friends, and he was sad at times. But he also felt relief from the constant texting. Instead of texting, Kenny went to the gym and caught up on schoolwork. He said that the first night he slept for 10 hours. He also spent time sitting with his family and talking. “I felt closer to my parents,” said Kenny.
Franchesca had an even happier result when she put away her phone. “I loved it!” she said. “I was going to the gym and hanging out with friends and playing basketball. I had a wonderful experience.” She slept better too, and she decided to continue the experiment for a while. “I think I’ll be so much smarter and healthier,” she explained. “Everybody in the world should try it.”
Kenny doesn’t plan to give up his phone again. But he now knows that he can live without it. “It was a reality check,” said the teen.
28. Experts are concerned about teens’ texting because it ______.
A. leads to learning disabilities B. takes up their learning time
C. develops the habit of staying up late D. causes misunderstandings with each other
29. What can be inferred from the passage
A. Teens will live a healthier life without phones.
B. Expecting teens to live without phones is not realistic.
C. Experimenting with phone use is popular among teens.
D. Teens don’t realize how different their lives are without phones.
30. How were the two teens’ reactions to the 48-hour challenge different
A. Only Kenny participated in physical activities.
B. Only Kenny spent time talking with his parents.
C. Only Franchesca benefited from a really good sleep.
D. Only Franchesca appreciated the freedom of having no phone.
31. Which is the best title for the passage
A. Giving up Texting B. Rules for Using Phones
C. Two Days with No Phone D. Problems Caused by Texting
D
Wherever we go, we are surrounded by history. Across the globe, cultural heritage is passed down through the generations. It is in the buildings and structures around us. It is in the arts and artifacts (手工艺品) we treasure. It lives in the languages we speak and the stories we tell. But today, it is under destruction as never before. Not only are the damages of time threatening our cultural heritage, but climate change, globalization and tourism are all demanding a heavy price. Technology is now the most important weapon in the battle. Here’s how technology is preserving our cultural heritage.
As you can imagine, creating the replicas (复制品) by 2 D images is extremely time-consuming. Increasingly, artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms (算法) allow millions of images to be stored in a matter of hours. AI will also make restoration (修复) and preservation of existing cultural heritage far easier and better than methods before.
Virtual reality (VR) technology will play a leading role in preserving our cultural heritage in the coming years. Many of the most important sites and architecture are easily damaged. The presence of hundreds of thousands of tourists on these locations is doing a great deal of harm. Wastes pile up everywhere, causing serious problems. As more cultural heritage sites and objects are digitally mapped and recorded, VR technology will increasingly become the way that people experience them. We’ll all finally be able to walk through places, look at (and touch) artifacts and works of art without ever seeing them with our own eyes.
Finally, our cultural heritage will be preserved by technology. Efforts in research, data sharing and project work will help promote and preserve the cultural heritage of countries all across the world.
32. According to paragraph 1, cultural heritage_____.
A. will never disappear B. will under perfect protection
C. is faced with challenges now D. is damaged by modern technology
33. What is the advantage of AI in preserving cultural heritage
A. It makes restoration easier. B. It makes preservation safer.
C. It creates replicas in seconds. D. It produces 2D images.
34. How does VR help to preserve cultural heritage
A. By burying a huge number of wastes. B. By reducing human influence on the site.
C. By preventing visitors from touching artifacts.
D. By educating people about the sites’ importance.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards technology in cultural protection
A. Supportive. B. Disagreeing. C. Doubtful. D. Neutral.

George had his eye on a scoring record. He took a deep breath as he stood in the doorway, looking in at the basketball court. The gym was old and small, but it held a long history. Maybe today I’ll make history, George thought.
His basketball league was celebrating. Today’s championship game marked its 50th anniversary (周年) since the league’s first championship.
George looked over the brochure for the anniversary. It listed the winners of each championship game and the top scorers. He stopped suddenly when he read the name of the top scorer from a game 30 years before. He quickly went through the rest of the list. “Look!” he said to his teammate David, showing him the brochure. “You see who has the all-time record My dad! He never told me that.”
“24 points,” David said. “That’s awesome!”
George’s best record was 19 points. He was the Badgers’ top scorer. “It seems that my dad never showed off something like that,” George said.
When his parents arrived, George brought the brochure over to them. His dad laughed. “I didn’t miss a shot in that game. But look at the score. I would have traded every shot for a win,” he said with regret. George hadn’t noticed that his dad’s team had lost the game just by one point. “That was a great group of teammates,” his dad added. “You have great teammates in the Badgers, too.”
As George warmed up, he was still digesting his father’s words. “This will be a struggle every second,” the coach emphasized before they got on court to play. “I want to see tough defense, sharp passing, and, above all, smart play as a team.”
George was confident he could lead the Badgers to victory, just as he did in their previous games against the Lions. And he played really hard. As the game neared its end, George had already scored 23 points. Another basket would break his father’s scoring record.

However, his team was now one point behind the Lions. George’s heart raced as he eyed the basketball in his hands. The clock ticked down, and every second felt like an eternity. He knew he had to make the right decision. Should he shoot for the record, or pass the ball to set up a winning play The crowd roared, their shouts a blur in George’s ears. He looked at his teammates, their faces tense and determined. Remembering his dad’s words, George made his choice. He passed the ball to David, who was in a perfect position for a three-pointer. David didn’t hesitate and the ball swished through the net, tying the game.
With no defenders around, David turned and shot at the basket. George seized the rebound and took off towards the other end of the court. His heart pounded as he drove towards the basket, feeling the weight of the moment on his shoulders. He leaped, the ball leaving his fingertips in a perfect arc. It hit the backboard and bounced off, rolling slowly towards the rim. George held his breath, watching as it inched its way over the line. The crowd erupted into cheers as the ball fell through, giving George the record-breaking 24th point. But more importantly, it gave his team the lead. They went on to win the game, and George knew that his father would be proud.

W: But what if I’m not able to keep up with my studies and still take care of everything at home
M: Don’t worry about that. We all support you. I’ll help more with the household chores, and the kids can pitch in too. You’ll be setting a great example for them.
W: You’re right. I feel better now. Thank you for believing in me.

M: Hello, and welcome to my channel! Today, we’re talking about teenagers. This is a time when many big changes happen. Teens grow quickly, not just in height, but also in their feelings and ideas about the world. At the same time, they are still figuring out who they really are. On top of all that, they start to want more freedom. Teenagers also face pressure from friends, school, and family. Sometimes, they may feel stressed about keeping up with schoolwork or fitting in with their friends. Peer pressure can make them do things they might not be sure about. But it’s also when they build strong friendships and discover what really matters to them. At this age, it’s important for teens to have support from parents and other trusted adults. While they may want to make their own choices, talking things through with someone they trust can make a big difference. Even though teens might make mistakes, it’s all part of learning and growing. By understanding what they go through, we can help them feel confident and ready for the future. Thanks for joining us today. Stay tuned for more discussions like this, and take care!
