Chinese New Year painting, called nianhua in Chinese, is a kind of traditional art to be put up on walls and windows during the Spring Festival. Its bright colors and different subjects show the Chinese people’s hope for happiness and wealth.
This art has a long history. Its earliest form was a picture of a door god during the Han Dynasty. Later, more subjects such as the Kitchen God, women and babies appeared. As the Chinese New Year arrives, every family puts up its New Year paintings in order to say goodbye to the past and welcome the future. One of the most famous woodblock (木刻板) New Year paintings comes from Yangjiabu of Shandong Province. It covers many different themes and forms. They reflect people’s everyday life.
As time went by, some people found New Year paintings old-fashioned (过时的). What’s more, they thought the traditional door gods too frightening to hang in their homes and preferred something more artistic (艺术的)—because these door gods usually looked strong, serious and angry-faced, holding sharp weapons (锋利的兵器) in their hands. So the sales of New Year paintings dropped sharply in the mid-1980s.
Usually, colorful woodblock New Year paintings are produced in four steps. First, artists draw a simple sketch (素描) on the paper. Next, they copy it onto a wooden board and print a few samples (样品). Then, they add color to the samples. Finally, printers paint colors on the board, put paper on it, and brush the paper. Then the colorful woodblock New Year paintings are ready.

A. A picture of babies. B. A picture of a door god.

A. Scary. B. Lively. C. Common. D. Lovely.
51. Why did the sales of New Year paintings dropped greatly in the middle of the 1980s

B. Because people wanted something that was full of art.
C. Because people thought the door god couldn’t bring good luck.
D. Because people found it hard to produce New Year paintings.
52. What is the best title for the passage
A. The History of Traditional Chinese Door Gods
B. Why New Year Paintings Lost Their Popularity
C. The Steps to Make Woodblock New Year Paintings
D. Chinese New Year Paintings: A Traditional Art

Miss Martha owned a small bakery (面包店). She was forty, a kind woman with a big imagination. She often wondered about the customers in her shop.
One customer made her very curious. He was a middle-aged man with glasses, who always wore old clothes, but clean. He came twice a week, and each time, he only bought two loaves (条) of hard bread. He never looked at her delicious pies or fresh cakes.
Miss Martha decided he must be a poor, hungry artist. She imagined him living in a very small, cheap room, thinking only about his painting so much that he forgot to eat. The idea touched her kind heart. She began to wish she could help him.
The next time he came to the shop, she acted quickly while his back was turned. She took two hard loaves, made a small hole in each, and put a large piece of fresh butter inside. Then she wrapped them up as usual.
Her heart beat fast as she handed him the bread. She spent the rest of the day dreaming that he would discover her kindness and thank her.
Suddenly, the quiet of the afternoon was broken. The shop door flew open, and the man stormed in. His face was dark with anger. He threw the bread down hard on the table.
“I am an architect (建筑师)!” he shouted. “For the past three months, I have been working on a building plan. I draw in pencil, and I use pieces of hard bread as erasers. It works better than a rubber eraser! But now... look.”
He held up his drawing. A huge, dirty mark from the butter ran across the clean, straight lines.
“You filled my bread with butter!” he shouted. “My work is damaged!”

On August 16, 2025, Pang Zhongwang, a doctoral student from Tsinghua University, won the “Touching China 2024” Award. His story, from a young man who fought against heavy hardships to an encouraging character, has warmed many hearts.
Born with great challenges, Pang lived a hard life when he was a child. His father has a serious mental illness. His mother’s legs were cut off, so she could hardly move. Pang himself had a heart problem since he was born. He went door-to-door to borrow money for his mother’s illness. He also picked up waste things to make money and help pay off his family’s debts (债务). However, he never lost hope. He always believed “Knowledge can change my life”.
In 2017, Pang entered Tsinghua University with a very high score in the college entrance exam. At first, he was worried that he might let others down. But later, he found his interest in scientific research. He kept trying even when he failed many times. Although money was still a problem, he decided to depend on himself. That’s why he said no to people who raised money for him. Instead, he asked Tsinghua University for grants (补助金) and won prizes for good grades. His mother named him “Zhongwang”, and it means “the hope of everyone”. She always told him to look forward to the future. Pang once said, “Mom smiles every day, why should I feel sad ”
Sadly, his mother passed away in 2020. That was just before he got the chance to study for a doctor’s degree at Tsinghua. Now, Pang has written many important science papers and got patents (专利) for his inventions. His dream is to “serve the country through scientific research” and he works hard for his goal. His story lights the way for many people.
As the award speech says: “You leave your hard times behind. You face life with a smile and move forward strongly.” Pang’s journey shows us that if we are strong and keep hope, we can live up to what others expect of us and create our own bright future.

How can we get used to the new policy
It's really wonderful news that the policy of "double-lightening the burden" has been carried out. However, we students have to deal with the new challenge of making the best of our time after school. How can we get used to the new policy
In the past, we spent 2 to 3 hours on homework and only had about 0.5 hours for hobbies. Now we spend less than 1.5 hours on homework and have 1 to 2 hours for our interests.
We should preview lessons before class and listen carefully in class. After school, we can ask teachers or classmates for help timely. We can also develop hobbies like reading and sports. Besides, helping parents with housework is a good choice.
In this way, we can make good use of time and improve ourselves.
