If you lie awake at night, thinking over a decision you made earlier that day or worrying about tomorrow’s to-do list, you might be overthinking.
Overthinking means going over the same thought again and again, analyzing (分析) the simplest of situations or events far past their usefulness. In many cases, it could show up as rumination (沉思), which often means replaying events of the past and even the present in a negative (负面的) way. But why do people overthink
According to The Conversation, overthinking comes from one of our primitive instincts (原始本能). The primitive mind will always see things in the worst possible light. Our brains are always looking for threats (威胁), to make a plan to address those threats and keep us safe. Those threats in mind may be based on past experiences or the “what ifs” we imagine could happen in the future.
Some people believe that overthinking may be helpful because it helps us look at a problem from every possible angle (角度) and get ready for what might happen. However, research suggests that overthinking can lead to worse stress, anxiety (焦虑), and depression (抑郁).
What’s more, overthinking can hurt relationships. Thinking the worst and making wrong guesses can lead to conflicts (冲突) with other people. Worrying about every little thing other people do and say can also mean that you misunderstand what they mean.
So, instead of sitting and thinking about a problem endlessly, you can distract (转移注意力) yourself for a bit. Your brain might find better ways to solve the problem while you’re doing something fun, like gardening (园艺), or even while you’re sleeping.
Also, when you find yourself overthinking, challenge these thoughts. Ask yourself if they make sense and think about other possibilities. It can be difficult at first, but learning to identify your overthinking can help you change negative thoughts into more positive ones.
“Thinking is a two-way street. While the brain may generate numerous thoughts, in the end, it’s up to us to decide if we accept them,”Natalie Dattilo, a professor at Harvard Medical School, told Forbes Health.

Make a Difference Day is a day to celebrate making a positive difference, and it began in the USA in the 1990s. It takes place on the fourth Saturday in October, and it falls on 26 October in 2024. The idea behind it is to encourage people to do something helpful in their local community. It doesn't need to be something big or take up a lot of time or cost any money. It's simply doing something to help make someone else's life a bit better.
There are lots of ways you can make a difference to people close to you and those you might never meet. Helping out with the housework by laying the table for dinner or cleaning your room without being asked makes a difference at home. You can make a difference in your local community by giving your unwanted books, clothes, or toys to charity. Young people's coach Maria Evans says that doing something meaningful for others is important. She says, "Your actions show them they matter." Trust and connection grow, making your relationship stronger. Your kindness might encourage them to help others too."
When you do something nice for someone else, you're showing yourself that you can have a positive influence. It gives you power and you feel able to make a real difference, which is important when life can seem difficult at times. Volunteering is a great way to make a difference. You might think it's just about helping others but Evans says it's great for your happiness too. She says,"It's a chance to meet new people, make friendships stronger and create memories. It's a good way to develop your confidence because when you use your skills, it reminds you that you matter and have the power to make changes."

Dorothy lived in a small house in Kansas with Uncle Henry, Aunt Em, and her little black dog Toto. Kansas was often windy, and sometimes a sudden, powerful cyclone (暴风,飓风)would come, capable of blowing away trees, people, and buildings. All houses there had cellars, and when a cyclone approached, people rushed down to stay safe until it passed.
One day, Uncle Henry spotted a cyclone coming and quickly told Aunt Em and Dorothy to head for the cellar. Toto, frightened, hid under the bed. Dorothy ran to get him. Just as she picked up Toto and rushed towards the cellar door, the cyclone hit the house.
Miraculously, the house was lifted into the sky, first slowly and then rapidly. Aunt Em and Uncle Henry were safe in the cellar, while Dorothy and Toto, still in the house, were carried to the top of the cyclone. Dorothy peeked through the open door, saw houses far below, and quickly shut the cellar door.
After hours of being tossed by the wind, Dorothy and Toto fell asleep. When Dorothy woke up, the house was back on the ground. She stepped outside with Toto and found herself in a strange place with tall trees, lovely flowers, and small blue houses.
Three short men in blue and a little old woman in a white dress approached. The woman thanked Dorothy for killing the Witch of the East. Confused, Dorothy denied it. The woman explained that Dorothy's house had landed on the witch. Dorothy saw the witch's feet with big red shoes under the house. Soon, the feet disappeared in the sun, leaving only the red shoes. The woman then gave the shoes to Dorothy, saying they were magical and she should wear them.

Liam Quinn, 38, lived on a narrowboat in and around London for several years, enjoying the outdoorsy lifestyle. “I loved waking up to the water and swans. 56 , and the next, parked next to cows in the countryside,” he said.
57 ,besides the beauty and exploration.
The cost of buying a narrowboat is usually between 50,000 pounds (about 456,000 yuan) and 100,000 pounds for smaller to medium-sized boats, according to Narrowboats.UK. 58 , where in the richest areas, prices average(平均) around 600,000 pounds.
59 ,there are many things to consider. “It's hard work taking care of the boat all the time and moving it every two weeks to follow the rules for people living on boats. Emptying the toilet and filling the boat with water were everyday tasks. I used launderettes (自助洗衣店) for clothes, as having a washing machine on a boat doesn’t work,” said Quinn.
60 ,“You become very practical (务实的), learning to take care of the boat yourself. Everyone is friendly and helpful, with an ‘all-in-it-together’ kind of feel,” Quinn said.
However, boat life isn't always easy.
One month, I'd be in the heart of the city.
Many of these boats are used as people's homes.
That's cheaper than buying an apartment in London.
Even with problems, Quinn enjoyed his time owning a boat.
Living on a boat is also cheaper and gives people a sense of independence.

Once upon a time, a merchant had a donkey. One morning, the merchant loaded his donkey with bags of salt. He wanted to sell the salt at a market. On their way to the market, they had to cross a river. While they were crossing the river, the donkey slipped and fell into the water. The merchant helped the donkey get out of the water. When they reached the bank, the donkey noticed that the load on his back had become lighter---some of the salt had dissolved in the water. The donkey was happy. He thought he had finally discovered a way to make the load on his back lighter.
Next day, the merchant again loaded the donkey with bags of salt and they set out on their way to the market. As they were crossing the river, the donkey deliberately slipped in the water. Dear students,
Have you got ready for the senior high school life Now let me tell you something about how to develop good habits in your new school life.
A healthy and happy life starts with good living habits. Firstly, we should have good eating habits. We should have three meals on time. Try to eat different kinds of vegetables and fruits. Secondly, we should have a good sleeping habit---get up early and go to bed early. We should also form good learning habits. It's important for high school students to make full use of time. In class we should listen to teachers carefully. If you have any problems, don't forget to ask your teachers or classmates for help. After class, we'd better make a plan for our studies, then follow it strictly.
I hope you will form good habits and enjoy your new school life.
Yours,
Li Hua
