Dear Science Club,
I am Li Hua from Grade 8. My classmate and I are preparing for the coming Campus Science Fair. We plan to design an invention called “Smart Waste Sorter”. It can recognize different types of waste through a camera and open the correct bin lid automatically. We got this idea because we often see students — including ourselves — throw rubbish into wrong bins.
However, we face two challenges. First, we are not sure how to make the camera recognition accurate. Second, we lack materials such as sensors and a small screen to build the model.
Could you please offer us some help We hope to get technical advice on programming the camera, and possibly borrow some spare parts from the club. We really want our invention to help improve waste sorting at our school. We look forward to your reply.
Thank you for your time and support.
Yours sincerely,

A
Huang Wenxiu was born in 1989 into a poor farmer’s family in Baise, Guangxi. Growing up in the mountains, she received educational subsidies (教育资助) from the state to continue her studies. In 2016, after graduating with a master’s degree from Beijing Normal University, she faced an important life choice. While many classmates stayed in big cities, Huang decided to return to her poverty-stricken hometown. She once said, “Many people from the countryside don’t want to go back, but someone has to. I am that person.”
In March 2018, Huang volunteered to serve as the first Party secretary of Baini Village, a deeply impoverished community surrounded by mountains. At that time, the village’s poverty rate was as high as 22.88%, with 103 out of 472 households still living in poverty. The villagers doubted whether a young woman could really help them. Some whispered, “She’s just here to add an experience to her resume (简历).” But Huang refused to give up. She visited every poor household, sometimes being refused entry several times. She helped villagers clean yards and work in the fields, slowly winning their hearts. After two months, she had drawn a detailed hand-drawn map marking every family’s information.
Huang then worked to develop local industries. She led villagers to plant sugar oranges and other profitable crops, set up an e-commerce station to sell their produce online. A villager recalled, “She visited my home more than ten times in just one year.” Thanks to her efforts, 88 households were lifted out of poverty within 18 months.
On the night of June 16, 2019, after visiting her hospitalized father, Huang was returning to Baini Village when a sudden flash flood swept her car away. She was only 30. Today, Baini Village has transformed from an impoverished mountain community into a national model village, with smooth roads and thriving industries. Her spirit continues to inspire young people across China. As an old saying goes, “A hero is not the one who never falls, but the one who gets up every time they fall.” Huang may have fallen on her journey, but her spirit will never fade.
What does Huang Wenxiu’s statement “someone has to be that person” reveal about her
A. She felt forced by her family to return.
B. She wanted to gain political experience for her career.
C. She was afraid of the challenges in big cities.
D. She believed in taking responsibility for her community.
Why did the villagers initially doubt Huang Wenxiu
A. Because she had no experience in farming.
B. Because they thought she was just a young woman looking for personal gain.
C. Because she could not speak their local language.
D. Because she refused to help them with housework.
How did Huang Wenxiu finally win the villagers' trust
A. By visiting every household and helping with daily chores.
B. By offering them money from the government.
C. By building new houses for them immediately.
D. By threatening to leave if they didn't cooperate.
What is the significance of the hand-drawn map mentioned in Paragraph 2
A. It showed her artistic talent as a painter.
B. It helped her find her way around the village.
C. It demonstrated her careful and devoted working style.
D. It was a gift prepared for the village leader.
Which of the following best summarizes the passage
A. The government should send more young people to villages.
B. Huang Wenxiu’s death was a great loss to her family.

Deep in the forests of Asia and Africa lives a quiet, scaly animal that few people have ever seen — the pangolin. Unlike rhinos or elephants, pangolins (穿山甲) are not famous. But they are the most illegally trafficked mammal in the world. Every year, hundreds of thousands of pangolins are caught and sold for their meat and scales (鳞片), which are mistakenly believed to have medical value.
Pangolins are unique. When threatened, they roll into a tight ball, using their hard scales as armor. This defense works against wild predators like lions, but it fails against humans. Poachers (偷猎者) simply pick up the rolled up animal and put it into a bag. Between 2014 and 2020, experts estimate that more than 200,000 pangolins were trafficked — that is one pangolin every five minutes.
Why are pangolins so valuable In some countries, pangolin meat is considered a luxury (奢侈品) dish. Their scales are used in traditional medicine, even though they are made of keratin (角蛋白) — the same substance as human fingernails. Scientists have proved that pangolin scales have no special healing power. Yet the demand continues.
China has taken strong action to protect pangolins. In 2020, China raised the pangolin’s national protection level to the highest, the same as giant pandas. It also banned (禁止) the use of pangolin scales in traditional medicine. These measures have sent a clear message: wildlife is not for consumption (消费). Conservationists hope that other countries will follow.
However, the battle is far from over. Poaching still exists, and many people remain unaware of the pangolin‘s danger. Education is key. When more people learn that pangolins are gentle, harmless creatures that eat ants and termites (白蚁), they may think twice before buying their scales.
The pangolin’s fate is in our hands. One conservationist said, “We cannot protect what we do not understand.” It is time to give this silent victim a voice.
What makes pangolins an easy target for poachers
A. Their scales cannot protect them from humans. B. Their rolling defense is useless against people.
C. They move very slowly on the ground. D. They are too large to hide in the forest.
What does the underlined word “demand” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A. The need for pangolin armor. B. The wish to eat ants and termites.
C. The desire for pangolin meat and scales. D. The request to ban illegal hunting.
What action has China taken to protect pangolins
A. It has given them the highest national protection level.
B. It has killed all predators that attack pangolins.
C. It has stopped scientists from studying them.
D. It has moved all pangolins to zoos.
According to the passage, why is education important for pangolin protection
A. Because many people do not know the truth about pangolins.
B. Because children can help catch poachers in the forest.
C. Because schools can raise money for conservation.
D. Because scientists need more students to study animals.
Which of the following best expresses the author‘s attitude toward pangolin protection
A. Hopeless — nothing can stop poaching.
B. Uncertain — it depends on other countries.
C. Urgent and hopeful — actions have been taken but more is needed.
D. Satisfied — the problem has already been solved.
C
For thousands of years, humans have looked up at the night sky and wondered: Are we alone This question has driven scientists to scan the universe for signals from other civilizations (文明). Yet despite decades of listening, we have heard nothing — a silence that some call the “Great Silence”.
The Italian physicist Enrico Fermi once made a famous remark: “If the universe is so vast and ancient, where is everybody ” This became known as the Fermi Paradox (费米悖论). The universe contains billions of stars, many older than our Sun. Many of these stars likely have planets that could support life. Simple math suggests that intelligent life should be common. But we have found no evidence of it.
Several explanations have been offered. One possibility is that intelligent life destroys itself before it can travel far. Nuclear war, climate disaster, or uncontrolled technology could wipe out a civilization. Another theory is that aliens (外星人) do exist, but they choose not to contact us — either because they consider us unimportant, or because they follow a strict rule of non-interference (不干涉). This is sometimes called the “Zoo Hypothesis” (动物园假说).
A more recent idea is that our methods of searching are simply too limited. We have only been listening for radio signals for about a hundred years — an extremely short moment in cosmic time (宇宙时间). Perhaps aliens communicate in ways we cannot yet imagine, using technologies far beyond our current understanding.
China‘s FAST telescope, the world’s largest radio telescope, is now joining the search. It scans deep space for faint (微弱的) signals that might one day answer the ancient question. Until then, the silence continues — a mystery that reminds us of both our smallness and our curiosity.
How does the author introduce the topic of the passage
A. By listing the names of famous scientists.
B. By giving detailed data about the number of stars.
C. By explaining the history of the FAST telescope.
D. By raising a universal human question that remains unanswered.
What role does the Fermi Paradox play in the passage
A. It proves that aliens once visited Earth.
B. It is a solution to the Great Silence.
C. It presents a contradiction that drives the discussion.
D. It shows that math is useless in astronomy.
The passage mentions several explanations for the Great Silence. Which of the following is NOT mentioned
A. Aliens are hiding in our solar system but avoid detection.
B. Intelligent civilizations tend to destroy themselves.
C. Aliens follow a rule of non-interference with us.
D. Our current technology is too limited to detect them.
Why does the author mention China‘s FAST telescope in the last paragraph
A. To compare it with smaller telescopes. B. To show that efforts to find alien life are ongoing.
C. To prove that aliens have already been found. D. To suggest that the search should be stopped.
Which of the following is the best title for this passage
A. “The Great Silence: Why Haven’t We Found Aliens Yet ”
B. “How FAST Became the World‘s Largest Telescope”
C. “The Life Cycle of Stars and Planets”
D. “Ten Reasons to Stop Searching for Aliens”

As a teenager, good habits help you grow strong and feel happy. Here are some important rules to follow.
26. Many students stay up late, but this weakens your immune system (免疫系统). Your body repairs itself during deep sleep. So, make sure you get 8–10 hours of rest each night.
Second, eat a rainbow. 27. Vegetables and fruits of different colors provide different vitamins. For example, carrots help your eyes, while oranges fight against colds. Try to eat five kinds of colorful produce daily.
Third, move your body. You don’t need to be a sports star. 28. It could be walking to school, dancing, or playing ball games. Just 30 minutes of activity a day keeps your heart strong and your mood bright.
Fourth, drink more water. Many teenagers choose sugary drinks like cola. These taste good, but too much sugar leads to weight gain and low energy. 29.
Finally, learn to relax. School and social life can sometimes feel overwhelming (压垮人的). Simple activities like deep breathing, listening to music, or talking to a friend can make a big difference. 30. Remember, it is okay to ask for help.
Follow these tips, and your future self will thank you.
