(Text 1)
M: Mrs. Tyler, there is something I’ve been wondering about.
W: What is it?
M: Some people say that women’s work is in the house. But I don’t think so. Maybe it’s different in your country.
W: Well, of course, you hear all kinds of ideas. But I think it’s true. Women’s work is at home.
M: Work at home is important, of course, but I think it should be shared. What I’m saying is that women should work outside the house because they can do a lot to help in the workplace.
W: There is plenty to do at home. Besides, women are better at housework and men are better at business.
M: Excuse me, but I don’t agree.
(Text 2)
W: Jack Smith, what a surprise! Nice to see you!
M: Hi, Elizabeth! I haven’t seen you since we met at the Christmas party last year?
W: That’s right. How are your wife and kids?
M: They are all fine.
W: I remember your wife was going to night school to learn sewing at that time?
M: Yes. Now she is learning cooking.
W: Is Allen, your son, still learning to play the violin?
M: He’s given it up. He never sticks to anything.
W: I think he is a good boy at fine arts.
M: I wish he were.
W: Say hello to your wife, will you?
M: Sure. Give your husband my best, too. Bye.
(Text 3)
W: Please take a seat, Mr Smith. Let’s wait for your luggage before we check in. Would you like some Chinese tea?
M: Yes, please.
W: Did you have a good trip?
M: Not bad, on the whole. We had some trouble at the London airport. A storm was coming, so the flight was delayed. We had to wait several hours before we could take off. The flight was generally quite smooth. But you know, it’s quite a long way to China, and we’ve been flying for some 17 hours altogether.
W: Then it must have been a very tiring journey.
M: Yes. But I’m sure I’ll be fresh by tomorrow, ready to see your beautiful city.
W: I hope you will enjoy your stay here.
M: Thank you. I am sure I will.
(Text 4)
W: Tell me what happened that morning.
M: Well, I collected my newspapers at about 8 o’clock, and then started to deliver them. When I went past the phone box I saw this sort of black bag in one corner. I got off my bike to have a better look. It was just an ordinary case, so I decided to find out who it belonged to.
W: When did you realize it was a bomb?
M: As soon as I opened it and saw the wires.
W: Have you ever seen a bomb before?
M: I’ve seen them on the television, that’s all.
W: What did you do next?
M: I rushed out of the box, went to the nearest house and phoned the police.
W: OK. Thank you.
M: No problem.
(Text 5)
When John was a boy, he never did what anyone told him. So his father had to tell him to do the opposite of what he wanted his son to do.
One day when the two were bringing bags of cotton home on their horses, they had to cross a river. When they were in the middle of it, one of the bags on John’s horse began to drop, so his father said, “that bag is nearly in the water! Push down hard on it!”
His father, of course, hoped that his son would do the opposite, but this time John did what his father had told him to do.
“What have you done, John?” his father shouted angrily.
“Well, father,” said John, “this time I thought that I would do just what you had told me, to show how foolish you always are!”
(Text 6)
Now, before we start our first lab class, I’d like to tell you something about the workbook you will be using. It’s a big book. What you should do is to choose the activities you want to do. Part of my job is to help you make your choices. Next, I’d like to say that in each lesson, there are usually two parts. The first is called “Experiments” and the second is called “Activities”. In the “Experiments” part, the book gives full instructions for all the experiments, including other steps you may take. Choose the steps you wish and there’s plenty of equipment in the lab. In the “Activities” part, you’ll find activities you can do in your own time. No instructions are given in this part, and you should do them in your own way. If there are no questions, let’s turn to Lesson One now.
