Many teenagers feel that the most important people in their lives are their friends. They believe that their family members, especially their parents, don’t know them as well as their friends do. In large families, it is often for brothers and sisters to fight with each other and then they can only go to their friends for advice. It is very important for teenagers to have one good friend or many friends. Even when they are not with their friends, they usually spend a lot of time talking among themselves on the phone. This communication is very important in children’s growing up, because friends can discuss something difficult to say to their family members.
However, parents often try to choose their children’s friends for them. Some parents may even stop their children from meeting their good friends. The question of “choice” is an interesting one. Have you ever thought of the following questions?
Who choose your friends?

"It’s over! Thank goodness!"
School was over and I was tired. I sat at the front of the school bus.
Janie, the driver, always tries to break the uncomfortable atmosphere (气氛) by talking. I try to listen politely, but usually I’m too busy thinking about my day. On this day, however, her talk was worth listening to.
"My father’s ill," she said to no one in particular (特别地). I could see worry in her eyes. I had never seen her like this before. She always meets students with a smile.
With a sudden chance of interest, I asked, "What’s wrong with him?"
With her eyes wet and her voice unusual, she answered, "Heart trouble. " Her eyes lowered as she continued, "I’ve already lost my mum, so I don’t think I can stand losing him. " I couldn’t answer. My heart ached for her.
I sat on the seat thinking of the great pain my own mother was thrown into when her father died.
I saw how hard it was, and still is, for her. I wouldn’t want anyone to go through that.
Suddenly I realized Janie wasn’t only a bus driver, which was just her job. She had a whole world of family and cares too.
I shouldn’t have been so selfish. I paid no attention to Janie because she was a bus driver. I had judged (判断) her by her job and brushed her off as unimportant.
I shouldn’t have been so selfish and self-centered.
Understanding people is an art.

The most important festival in China is the Spring Festival, which comes from an activity known as the Winter Sacrifice (冬季祭牲 ). As the cold winter began to end and the warm spring was about to begin, people gathered together. They brought out what they had got from hunting, fishing and the field to thank the gods and their ancestors. In the beginning, their activity had no fixed date. By and by it was celebrated at the end of the old year or the beginning of the new year. Finally, it became a festival to say goodbye to the old year and welcome the new year. So it came to be called the Spring Festival.
Since the Spring Festival marks the first day of a new year, the first meal is rather important. People from north and south have different sayings about the food they eat on this special day. In Northern China, people usually eat Jiaozi. Its Chinese pronunciation Jiaozi means the end and the beginning of time. According to historical records, people from north and south ate Jiaozi on Chinese New Year’s Day. Perhaps because Southern China produced more rice than any other area, slowly, southern people had many more other choices on New Year’s Day. Besides, the most common foods for the first meal are noodles, New Year Cake, Tangyuan. The noodle symbolizes long life. The New Year Cake is called Niangao in Chinese, which carries the hope of improvement in life year after year. Tangyuan is a symbol of reunion. ???????? To pay a New Year visit is an important activity during the Spring Festival. People also send cards to express a New Year’s greeting. What children love most is to set off firecrackers (鞭炮). However, as life pace is becoming faster and faster, people now have taken up new ways to celebrate the Chinese traditional New Year. For example, many people no longer send out greeting cards. Instead, they use telephones or e-mails. To travel during the New Year holidays is another fashion. ?65.The underlined word “fashion” most probably means _____________ . ??? As you move around your home, take a good look at the things you have. It is likely that your living room will have a television set and a video, and your kitchen a washing machine and a microwave oven. Your bedroom drawers will be filled with almost three times as many clothes as you need. You almost certainly own a car and possibly a home computer, holiday abroad at least once a year and eat out at least once a week.
Now, perhaps, more than ever before, people are wondering what life is all about, and what it is for. Getting material success is beginning to trouble large numbers of people around the world. They feel that the long-hours work culture to make more money to buy more things is eating up their lives, leaving them very little time or energy for family . Many are turning to other ways of living and downshifting is one of them.
Six percent of workers in Britain took the decision to downshift last year. One couple who downshifted is Daniel and Liz. They used to work in central London. He was a newspaper reporter and she used to work for an international bank. They would go to work by train every day from their large house in the suburbs(郊区), leaving their two children with a nanny(保姆). Most evenings Daniel wouldn’t get home until eight or nine o’clock, and nearly twice a month he would have to fly to New York for meetings. They both earned a large amount of money but began to feel that life was passing them by.
Nowadays, they run a farm in the mountains of Wales. “I always wanted to have a farm here,” says Daniel, “and we took almost a year to make the decision to downshift. It’s taken some getting used to, but it’s been worth it. We have to think twice now about spending money on car repairs and we no longer have any holidays. However, I think it’s made us stronger as a family, and the children are a lot happier.”
Liz, however, is not quite sure. “I used to enjoy my job, even though it was hard work and long hours. I’m not really a country girl, but I suppose I’m gradually getting used to looking after the animals. One thing I do like, though, is being able to see more of my children. My advice for other people wanting to do the same is not to think about it too much or you might not do it at all.”

Chinese students celebrate their birthdays in different ways, but the most common way is to
hold a birthday party, at which friends get together to have fun drinking, singing and dancing. On
the birthday, one usually receives nice gifts and good wishes from friends and parents.
Sometimes, parents will prepare a special dinner or a cake to show their love for their children.
Since birthday celebration is one of the important activities in one’s life, it can be done in
more meaningful ways. For example, we can buy some flowers or cook a delicious meal for
our mothers on that day. In this way, we express thanks to our parents in return for their love.
