Unit1 Cultural Relics
Listening 1
Hello, I’m Jan Hasek., an old miner from the Czech Republic. In April ,1945 I heard something at midnight. I got up from bed and ran outside. The sound came from a mine for a long time. The war still had not my town. Suddenly, I saw some soldiers! I could see them clearly in the bright light of the full moon. They were taking boxes from trucks and putting them in the mine. Later, one of my friends told me that were inside the boxes. A week later, I decided to have a look . To my surprise, all the holes in the mine ! Now, I own a little restaurant near the mine. Some people are looking for the treasure. They say and are buried in the mine. The mayor of a German town across the stream is also looking for the treasure. He says a Nazi soldier told him it. Ha! That was ten years ago and still .

Read the letter from a German newspaper, in which the writer gives his opinion about what should be done with a cultural relic that has been found. Read it carefully and see if you agree with him.
Agree or not
Reasons
Dear Editor,
I’m a student at a high school in Berlin.
I think highly of those who are searching for the
Amber Room. I don’t agree that they should return
the treasure to Russia if they find it; nor do I think
they should give it to any government. The search
has cost them a lot of time and money. Besides,
my father once told me that any person who finds
it can keep it. When I was a pupil, I found a little
money on the floor of my classroom. Another boy
said he lost it but I didn’t give it back to him.
How could I be sure he was telling the truth.
Johann Weber
Word study in the reading:
1. think highly/well/much/a lot of 赞赏;高度评价. Think little/ill/nothing of 对…评价不高
e.g. I think highly of those who volunteer to help the homeless people.
We all think ill of the film.
2. besides. (1) in addition to; (prep.)除…之外.
e.g. Besides milk and cheese, we need vegetables.
(2) more over ;also 而且.
e.g. I don’t want to go out now, and besides, I must work.
词语辨析.
besides和except都含有 “除…外”的意思. 在否定句中可以互换. 在肯定句中有区别. besides指 “除…外,另外还有”,着重 “另外还有”. 而except指 “从整体里减去一部分”, 着重 “排除在外”.
e.g. I have five other books besides this.
We all went there except Xiao Li.
【注】except for 指 “整体…除了某一点以外” 前后的词往往不属于同一范畴.(美中不足)
e.g. The composition is good except for a few spelling mistakes.
The house is very good except for a broken window.
