Although April did not bring us the rains we all hoped for, and although the Central Valley doesn’t generally experience the sound and lightning that can go with those rains, it’s still important for parents to be able to answer the youthful questions about thunder and lightning.
The reason these two wonders of nature are so difficult for many adults to explain to children is that they are not very well understood by adults themselves. For example, do you know that the lightning we see flashing down to the earth from a cloud is actually flashing up to a cloud from the earth? Our eyes trick us into thinking we see a downward motion when it’s actually the other way round. But then, if we believed only what we think and we see, we’d still insist that the sun rises in the morning and sets at night.
Most lightning flashes take place inside a cloud, and only a relative few can be seen jumping between two clouds or between earth and a cloud. But, with about 2,000 thunderstorms taking place above the earth every minute of the day and night, there’s enough activity to produce about 100 lightning strikes on earth every second.
Parents can use thunder and lightning to help their children learn more about the world around them. When children understand that the light of lightning flashing reaches their eyes almost at the same moment, but the sound of the thunder takes about 5 seconds to travel just one mile, they can begin to time the interval(间隔) between the flash and the crash to learn how close they are to the actual spark(闪光).
41. According to the author, in the area of the Central Valley,___________.
A. rains usually come without thunder and lightning
B. it is usually dry in April
C. children pay no attention to the two natural wonders
D. parents are not interested in thunder and lightning
42. We believe that lightning is a downward motion because ___________.
A. we were taught so by our parents from our childhood
B. we are taken in by our sense of vision
C. it is a common natural sight
D. it is a truth proved by science
43. What is TRUE about lightning according to the passage?
A. Only a small number of lightning flashes occur on earth.
B. Lightning travels 5 times faster than thunder.
C. Lightning flashes usually jump from one cloud to another.
D. There are far more lightning strikes occurring on earth than we can imagine.
44. The underlined word “activity” is most closely related to the word(s)___________.
A. “cloud” B. “lightning strikes” C. “lightning flashes” D. “thunderstorms”
45. It can be concluded from the passage that____________.
A. we should not believe what we see or hear
B. things moving downward are more noticeable
C. people often have wrong ideas about ordinary phenomena (现象)
D. adults are not as good as children in observing certain natural phenomena
(B)
Happiness can be described as a positive mood and a pleasant state of mind. According to recent surveys, sixty to seventy percent of Americans consider themselves to be moderately happy and one in twenty persons feels very happy. Psychologists have been studying the factors that contribute to happiness. It is not predictable, nor is a person in a clearly ideal situation necessarily happy. The ideal situation may have little to do with his actual feelings.
A good education and income are usually considered necessary for happiness. Though both may contribute, they are only chief factors if the person is seriously undereducated or actually suffering from lack of physical needs.
The rich are not likely to be happier than the middle-income group or even those with very low incomes. People with college educations are somewhat happier than those who did not graduate from high school, and it is believed that this is mainly because they have more opportunity to control their lives. Yet people with a high income and a college education may be less happy than those with the same income and no college education.
Poor health does not rule out happiness except for the seriously disabled or those in pain. Learning to deal with a health problem can contribute to happiness. Those with a good sex life are happier in general, but those who have a loving, affectionate relationship are happier than those who rely on sex alone. Love has a higher correlation with happiness than any other factor.
It should be noted that people quickly get used to what they have, and they are happiest when they feel they are increasing their level no matter where it stands at a given time.
Children whose parents were happily married have happier childhoods, but are not necessarily happier adults.
The best formula for happiness is to be able to develop the ability to tolerate frustration, to have a personal involvement and commitment, and to develop self-confidence and self-esteem.
46. It can be inferred from the passage that ____________.
A. happiness is predictable
B. a person in an obviously ideal situation must be happy
C. the rich are likely to be happier than the middle-income group
D. happiness is not necessarily connected to one’s situation in society
47. People with college education _______________.
A. are not happier than those who have only an education at high school
B. are much happier than those who did not graduate from high school
C. have less opportunity to control their lives
D. have more opportunity to control their lives
48. According to the article, happiness is greatly dependent on ____________.
A. a happy childhood B. great wealth
C. a feeling that conditions are becoming for the better D. a college degree
49. Which of the following is most likely to contribute to happiness?
A. Being exceptionally good-looking.
B. Having a loving, affectionate relationship.
C. Having a good paying job.
D. Meeting lots of people.
50. Which of the following attitudes or feelings is most likely to be found in happy people?
A. Having self-esteem. B. Being sure of keeping everything they already have.
C. Never being jealous. D. Knowing how to be charming.
(C)
Very old people do raise moral problems for almost everyone who comes in contact with them. Their values—this can’t be repeated too often—are not necessarily our values. Physical comfort, cleanness and order are not necessarily the most important things. The social services from time to time find themselves faced with a flat with decaying food covered by small worms, and an old person lying alone in bed, taking no notice of the worms. But is it interfering with personal freedom to insist that they go to live with some of their relatives so that they might be taken better care of? Some social workers, the ones who clear up the worms, think we are in danger of carrying this concept of personal freedom to the point where serious risks are being taken with the health and safety of the old.
Indeed, the old can be easily hurt or harmed. The body is like a car; it needs more mechanical maintenance, as it gets older. You can carry this comparison right through to the provision of spare parts. But never forget that such operations are painful experience, however good the results. And at what point should you stop to treat the old body? Is it morally right to try to push off death by pursuing the development of drugs to excite the forgetful old mind and to activate the old body, knowing that it is designed to die? You cannot ask doctors or scientists to decide, because so long as they can see the technical opportunities, they will feel obliged to give them a try, on the principle that while there’s life, there’s hope.
When you talk to the old people, however, you are forced to the conclusion that whether age is happy or unpleasant depends less on money or on health than it does on your ability to have fun.
51. It is implied in Paragraph One that ___________.
A. very old people enjoy living with their relatives
B. social services have nothing to do with very old people
C. very old people would like to live alone so that they can have more personal freedom
D. very old people are able to keep their rooms very clear
52. Some social workers think that __________.
A. health and safety are more important than personal freedom
B. personal freedom is more important than health and safety
C. old people should keep their rooms clean
D. one should not take the risk of dealing with old people
53. In the author’s opinion, ____________.
A. the human body can’t be compared to a car
B. the older a person, the more care he needs
C. too much emphasis has been put on old people’s values
D. it is easy to provide spare parts for old people
54. The word “it” in the last paragraph refers to __________.
A. the conclusion you have come to B. your talk to the old people
C. whether age is happy or unpleasant D. one’s money or one’s health
55. The author thinks that ____________.
A. medical decisions for old people should be left to the doctors
B. old people can enjoy a happy life only if they are very rich
C. the opinion that we should try every means possible to save old people is doubtful
D. it is always morally right to treat old people and push off death

On Keeping a Diary in English
Keeping a diary in English is one of the effective ways to improve our English writing ability. Compared with other forms of writing, it is shorter and takes less time. It can help us to develop the habit of thinking in English. If we stick to this practice, gradually we’ll learn how to express ourselves in English. In keeping a diary in English, we certainly run up against a lot of difficulties. In the first place, it often happens that we have trouble finding appropriate words and phases to give expression to our mind. Secondly, there are many idiomatic(习语的;惯用的)ways of saying things in Chinese. And it is extremely hard for us to put them into English properly. Surely, there are some other roadblocks we may come across in keeping a diary in English.
As far as I’m concerned, my suggestion is that we should always have a notebook and a Chinese-English dictionary within easy reach. Whenever something beats us, we can first put it down in our notebook and then consult our dictionary. We can also turn to our English teacher for help, if necessary. In short, I believe that it is of great use to keep a diary in English for the development of our writing skills.

读写任务(共1小题;满分25分)
Keeping a diary can improve our English. It helps us form the habit of English thinking and express ourselves. When we come across difficulties like choosing proper words, and changing Chinese idioms into English, we can turn to references.
To master the English language, we’ll try our best to think in English when listening, speaking, reading and writing; to reach the goal, I believe it is better to keep diaries in English regularly and practice the language. Keeping the English diary means practicing English every day.
In my opinion, keeping a diary in English is one of the effective methods to improve English writing skills. The diary is short and small, time saving; we are free to set down what’s on inside and outside ourselves. Unconsciously we can use English freely and effectively.
