There was once an 11-year-old boy who went fishing every time he went to an island in the middle of a New Hampshire lake.
On the day before bass(巴斯鱼) season opened, he and his father were fishing early in the evening, catching other fish with worms. Then he tied on a small silver lure(鱼饵) and put it into the lake. Suddenly the boy felt something very big pulling on the lure. His father watched with admiration as the boy skillfully brought the fish beside the bank. Finally he lifted the tired fish from the water. It was the largest one he had ever seen, but it was a bass.
The boy and his father looked at the big fish. The father lit a match and looked at his watch. It was 10 pm — two hours before the season opened. He looked at the fish, then at the boy. “You’ll have to put it back, son,” he said.
“Dad!” cried the boy. “There will be other fish,” said his father. “Not as big as this one,” cried the boy. He looked around the lake. No other fishermen or boats could be seen in the moonlight. He looked again at his father.
Even though no one had seen them, nor could anyone ever know what time he had caught the fish, the boy could tell from his father’s voice that the decision couldn’t be changed. He threw the huge bass into the black water.
The big fish disappeared. The boy thought that he would never again see such a big fish.
That was 34 years ago. Today the boy is a successful architect in New York City. He often takes his own son and daughters to fish at the same place.
And he was right. He has never again caught such a large fish as the one he got that night long ago. But he does see that same fish ... again and again ... every time he has an ethical (道德的) decision to make. For, as his father had taught him, ethics are simple matters of right and wrong. It is only the practice of ethics that is difficult.

Heavy rain and wind plagued Florida on Tuesday, June 13, as Hurricane Alberto hit land near Adams Beach. This storm started as a hurricane but, as it drew closer to Florida, it lessened and became weaker until it was only a tropical(热带的) storm. Even so, winds up to 50 mph were being recorded by the National Hurricane Center.
The storm did cause some problems for homeowners in the nearby area of Adams Beach. Electricity to 21,000 houses and businesses was cut off, and there was minor flooding in neighborhoods. However, this was a small problem in comparison to the normal power outages(停电期间) that occur during a hurricane.
Although tropical storms are not as severe as hurricanes, it’s very important to take safety measures. Lightning is a very serious concern, so people should stay inside their homes during a storm. Also, rubbish and dangerous objects may get swept into a flood, so it’s best to remain on high ground or out of the water in case a flood occurs. Folks trapped in hurricanes or severe storms should also stay away from windows.
51. The underlined word “plagued” in the first sentence means “ ”.
A. came across
B. caused trouble to
C. fell off
D. broke out
52. From this passage, a tropical storm could be caused by .
A. hot weather with heavy rain and wind
B. a hurricane that lessens as it is moving
C. strong winds up to 50 mph
D. the changeable tropical situation
53. What safety measures should people take in hurricanes or storms
A. Lightning should be the first concern.
B. Dangerous objects may hurt people in the flood caused by hurricanes.
C. Staying away from the windows is the way to escape from the flood.
D. Staying inside the room in case of the lightning.
54. What is the best title for this passage
A. Dangers around us.
B. Measures taken in hurricanes.
C. Results caused by a tropical storm.
D. Hurricane Alberto hits Florida.
55. From the first two paragraphs, we can see .
A. Adams Beach was directly hit by the hurricane
B. flooding is a minor disaster caused by the hurricane
C. normal power outages are the most serious problem to a city
D. homeowners suffered some losses from the disaster
第二节 信息匹配(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
下面是一篇有关文化休克方面的文章,请按照要求匹配信息。
A. Culture shock isn't a clinical term or medical condition. It's simply a common way to describe the confusing and nervous feelings a person may have after leaving a familiar culture to live in a new and different culture.
B. One person's adjustment to a new culture is not necessarily like another's. In some situations, people are excited about their move.
C. Depending on where you come from and where you are now, you may or may not have trouble with the native language.
D. A lot of the anxiety that comes with moving ( http: / / www.kidshealth.org / teen / your_mind / emotions / moving.html ) to a new place has to do with not knowing what to expect in your new environment. Learning things about your new environment will help you become more comfortable.
E. It's important to realize that some people have an easier time adjusting to a new culture than others. Sometimes, if members in your family are having an easy transition, they'll be a great source of support — a group of people who are going through something very much like what you're going through. In addition, your family can be a big part of keeping ties to home.
F. Everyone feels the pressure to fit in at one time or another — whether they've lived in the area for days or years. But don't feel like you need to change everything about yourself so you can stand out less. All of your experiences before you came to your new home are part of you, and what makes you special.
请阅读以下相关的内容,然后与上面材料进行匹配,使得文章顺畅连贯。
56.When you move to a new place, you're bound to face a lot of changes. That can be exciting and stimulating, but it can also be overwhelming. You may feel sad ( http: / / www.kidshealth.org / teen / your_mind / emotions / bad_mood.html ), anxious, frustrated, and want to go home.
57.In some people, the excitement gives way to frustration as time goes on and they still have trouble understanding their new surroundings.
58.It's a good idea to become comfortable with the language as soon as you can. Not being able to understand what people are saying is almost as frustrating as not knowing how to make people understand what you are saying.
59. Lots of good resources are around to help you practice. Many schools with a good number of students new to the country have language classes. If your school doesn't offer one, check out some of the community centers and libraries in your area. In addition, books make good resources too, and even some websites.
60..But sometimes, members of your family might want to keep your ties to home too tight. Your parents might not expect the changes that may happen as you begin to learn more about your new culture.

How can the writing skills of secondary level students, in a large class, be developed
Renata Braga, Brazil
I would divide the class into groups of 5 or 6 students and give them different topics with a list of words they must use when writing a paragraph or a composition (depends on their level). Then, ask each group to present in front of the others. They like and feel important because they can also ask about their classmates' opinions.
Tanveer Hyder, Pakistan
For practice as well as to save time, give the students homework for the improvement of writing. Tell them any story and tell them they will have to write for tomorrow what they just heard, or show them any movie and tell them the same thing. It became a more beneficial for me really when I adopted this method here in Pakistan. Thanks.

Text6
Experts cannot explain many English words. For hundreds of years, a dog was called a “hound (h-o-u-n-d)”, the word is still used but not as commonly as the word “dog”. Experts do not know where the word “dog” came from or when. English speakers just started using it. Other words whose origins are unknown include “fun”, “bad”, and “big”. English speakers also continue to invent new words by linking old words together. A good example is the words “motor” and “hotel”. Many yeas ago someone linked them together into the word “motel”. A motel is a small hotel near a road where people traveling in cars can stay for a night. Other words come from the first letter of names of groups or devices. A device to find objects that cannot be seen called Radio Detecting and Ranging became “radar”. That north Atlantic Treaty Organization is usually called NATO. Experts say that English has more words that explain the same thing than any other language. For example, the words “large”, “huge”, “vast”, “massive”, and “enormous” all mean something really “big”.

读写任务:
Renata Braga, divided classes into small groups, and give them a list of words to use for writing.
Tanveer Hyder, Pakistan tell students stories or let them see movies, then let them write as homework.
Leon Wooldridge, Hungary. use music as background to stimulate students to write.
I believe, Firstly, improving our writing skills should start with a phrase, then a sentence, then a paragraph. The problem we met is that we don’t have good memories, always forget words when we pick up a pen. Secondly, as Chinese says goes,” Thousands books makes perfect writings”. We should read more and do exercise less. The fact is we seldom read newspapers or magazines but the textbooks and grammar exercises, Practice makes perfect not exercises makes perfect. Thirdly, but not at least less importantly, we should keep a diary in English. If we are determined to improving our writing skill, we can make it, no matter large or small classes.
