Americans have contributed to many art forms, but jazz, a type of music , is one of the art forms that was started in the United States. Black Americans, who sang and played the music of their homeland, created jazz.
Jazz is a mixture of the music of Africa, the work songs the slaves sang, and religious music. Improvisation is an important part of jazz. This means that the musicians make the music up as they go along, or create the music on the spot. This is why a jazz song might sound a little different each time it is played.
Jazz bands formed in the late 1800s. They played in bars and clubs in many towns and cities of the South, especially New Orleans. New Orleans is an international seaport, and people from all over the world come to New Orleans to hear jazz.
Jazz became more and more popular. By the 1920s, jazz was popular all over the United States. By the 1940s, you could hear jazz not only in clubs and bars, but in concert halls as well. Today, people from all over the world play jazz. Jazz musicians from the United States, Asia, Africa, South America, and Europe meet and share their music at festivals on every continent. I dreamed I had an interview with God. “So you would like to interview me?” God asked. “If you have the time,” I said. “My time is eternity.(永远,来生)” God smiled, “what questions do you have in mind for me?” “What surprises you most about human beings?” God answered, “That they get bored with childhood, they rush to grow up, and then long to be children again. That they lose their health to make money… and then lose their money to restore their health. That by thinking anxiously about the future, they forget the present, such that they live in neither the present nor the future. That they live as if they will never die, and lie as though they had never lived.” God’s hand took mine and we were silent for a while. And then I asked, “As a parent, what are some of life’s lessons you want your children to learn?” To learn they cannot make anyone love them. All they can do is let themselves be loved. To learn that it is not good to compare themselves to others. To learn to forgive by practising forgiveness. To learn that it only takes a few seconds to open profound (深刻的)wounds in those they love, and it can take many years to heal (治愈)them. To learn that a rich person is not one who has the most, but is one who needs the least. To learn that there are people who love them dearly, but simply have not yet learned how to express or show their feelings. To lean that two people can look at the same thing and see it differently. To learn that it is not enough that they forgive one another, but they must also forgive themselves.” “ Thank you for your time,” I said humbly. “Is there anything else you would like your children to know?” God smiled and said: “Just know that I am here always.”

Many people like the feeling of the gentle wind in spring. Many like to see the falling leaves dancing in the wind in autumn. But sometimes, when the wind becomes a storm, it can be very destructive(毁灭性的).
A series of such storms struck the US last month and caused very serious damage and human pain.
Every year, major storms cause many problems around the world. There is nothing people can do to stop these powerful forces of nature. But new techniques are helping scientists to predict(预测) how, when, and where big storms will happen. The more exact scientists' warnings are, the better people can prepare for the storms.
Predictions are improving. "We've gotten better over the years, especially the last few years," says Phil Klotzback, a scientist at an American university. How is a storm formed? Even if scientists know where a storm will happen, winds can suddenly change, carrying the storm to a new direction. "For a hurricane to happen, conditions have to be just right," Klotzbach says.
First, the ocean water needs to be warm enough so that it evaporates and rises into the air. As it rises, the vapor(水蒸气) cools and turns back into liquid. This process gives off heat. This produces energy like an engine that causes winds to increase. It drives the formation(形成) of a hurricane.
If wind speeds reach 40 miles per hour, the system is called a "tropical storm"(热带风暴), and it gets a name. At 75 miles per hour, it becomes a hurricane.
Hurricanes that hit the US start when a thunderstorm forms off the coast of Africa. Storms also develop over tropical waters in other parts of the world.
On average, 60 or 70 storms form off Africa every year. About 10 of them get names. There are usually about six hurricanes. Two tend to be very big, with winds of 115 miles per hour or higher.
The hurricane season lasts from June to November. Ninety percent of all hurricanes hit in August, September, and October.

[阅读材料]
About 1% of people in the United States, many of them teenagers(十几岁的青少年), deal with sadness, anger or other unhappy things by cutting their own skin with knives, broken glass, or other sharp objects. Cutting is the most common form of self-injury.
Most teens who self-injure come from middle-or-higher-class families and are well educated and bright. Many have at least one parent who is often drowned in wine(酗酒). Some might have been living other painful life. Cutters often feel that they have little control over their lives.
It’s common for teens to feel some anger, sorrow, sadness or other difficult feelings from time to time. Most find healthy ways to deal with their feelings, such as talking with friends or parents, playing sports, or expressing themselves through writing, music, or art. Most are able to go through difficult feelings. Cutters, however, live with powerful feelings like sadness, sorrow, and anger much of the time. They haven’t developed healthy and right ways to deal with their strong feelings, learn from them, or move out of them.
Some cutters say they do it because they feel so dead inside that even a bad feeling is better than no feeling at all. Some say cutting brings a short period time of happiness. It is hard for someone else to understand how self-injury can feel “good” to some people.

There are some problems with the students’ psychology. Many of them don’t do with their sadness, anger or other unhappy things in a proper way. Instead, they self-injure themselves. Students with such problems usually are those whose parents also have problems such as being addicted to drinking. Even though some self-injured students say they do it just because it can bring them a short time of happiness.
Then what should we do to relax and rid us of unhappy feeling properly? When we come across the unhappy incident which makes us feel upset, in my opinion, there are several ways to get rid of the unhappy feeling. First of all, we may try to take some exercise such as running or playing basketball. What’s more, we may listen to some favourite music, which makes us relax. In addition, telling it to one of your best friends is another effective means. Finally thinking of some good things that you are looking forward to helps you also. If we can manage to rid ourselves of the bad mood, we don’t have any mental problems and live a happy life.
