A
In June,1774, the officials from Maryland and Virginia held a talk with the Indians of the six nations .The Indians were invited to send the boys to William and Mary College. In a letter the next day they refused the offer as follows:
We know that you have a high opinion of the kind of learning taught in your colleges, and that costs of living of our young men, while with you, would be very expensive to you. We are convinced that you mean to do us good by your proposal and we thank you heartily. But you must know that different nations have different ways of looking at things, and you will therefore not be offended if our ideas of this kind education happen not to be the same as yours. We have had some experience of it. Several of our young people were formerly brought up at the college of the Northern provinces; they were taught all your sciences; but when they came back to us, they were bad manners, ignorant of every means of living in the woods---they were totally good for nothing.
We are, however, not the less obliged by your kind offer, though we refuse to accept it; and, to show our grateful sense of it, if the gentlemen of Virginia will send us a dozen of their sons, we will take care of their education, teach them all we know, and make men of them.

Different from the officials’ view of education, the Indians thought______.
A: young women should be educated
B: they had different goals of education
C: they taught different branches of science
D: they should teach the sons of the officials first
From the last paragraph we can know that __________.
A: Indians were quite sure of their education
B; Virginian officials would like to send their children to them
C; Indians’ education was much better.
D: Indians were clever enough not to send their children to colleges.

Speeding off in a stolen car, the thief thinks he has got a great catch. But he is in for an unwelcome surprise. The car is fitted with a remote immobilizer (远程控制器)and a radio signal from a control centre miles away will ensure that once the thief switches the engine off, he will not be able to start it again.
The idea goes like this. A control box fitted to the car contains a mini-cell phone, a micro-processor and memory and a GPS satellite positioning receiver. If the car is stolen, a coded cell phone signal will tell the control centre to block the vehicle’s engine management system and prevent the engine being restarted.
In the UK, a set of technical fixes is already making life harder for car thieves. “The pattern of vehicle crime has changed.” Says Martyr Randall, a security expert. He says it would only take him a few minutes to teach a person how to steal a car, using a bare minimum of tools, but only if the car is more than 10 years old.
Modern cars are far tougher to steal, as their engine management computer won’t allow them to start unless they receive a unique ID code beamed out by the ignition(点火) key. In the UK, technologies like this have helped achieve a 31% drop in vehicle crime since 1997.
But determined criminals are still managing to find other ways to steal cars, often by getting hold of the owner’s keys. And key theft is responsible for 40% of the thefts of vehicles fitted with a tracking system.
If the car travels 100 meters without the driver conforming(一致的) the ID, the system will send a signal to an operation centre that it has been stolen. The hundred meters minimum avoids false alarm due to inaccuracies in the GPS signal.
Staff at the centre will then contact the owner to conform that the car really is missing and keep police informed of the vehicle’s movements via the car’s GPS unit.
What’s the fun_ction of the remote immobilizer fitted to the car?
A: To help the police make a surprise attack on car theft.
B: To allow the car to lock automatically when stolen.
C: To prevent the car thief from restarting it once it stops.
D: To prevent the theft by sending a radio signal to the car owner
The underlined sentence “the pattern of vehicle crime has changed” suggests that_______.
A: it takes a longer time for the car thief to do the stealing.
B: self-prepared tools are no longer enough for car theft
C: the thief has to make use of computer technology
D: the thief has lost interest in stealing cars over 10 years old.
What is essential in making a modern car tougher to steal_______.
A: A coded ignition key B: A unique ID card
C: A special cell phone signal D: A GPS satellite positioning receiver
Why does the tracking system set a 100-metre minimum before sending an alarm to the operation centre?
A: To leave time for the operation centre to give an alarm
B: to keep police informed of the car’s movement
C: To give the driver time to contact the operation centre.
D. To allow for possible errors in the GPS system
50. What will the operation centre do first after receiving an alarm?
A: Start the tracking system B: Block the engine
C: Contact the owner D: Locate the missing car
C
Something interesting happened during the last Christmas shopping hour in London. A poor man, who, though no fault of his own, found himself locked in a big store late on Christmas Eve. No doubt the store was crowded with people buying presents and the assistants were dead beat and wanted to go home. It seemed that all the necessary checks were made before the store was locked, and the assistants went home to enjoy the three-day holiday.
However that may be, the man was still in the store. When he realized that, he decided to make the best of it. In the store, of course, there was plenty of food, drink and bedding. There must have been radios and television sets, which no one could tell whether the man had ever used. When the store reopened, the man was discovered in bed with a large number of empty bottles beside him. He seemed to have been very happy. Everyone else was enjoying Christmas, so he saw no reason why he should not do the same. Happily enough, he let the police take him away. Perhaps he had a better Christmas than usual. It was reported that the man would have to stay in prison for seven days. It seemed, however, the judge was not going to do anything for the store, as he said that the store had become better known through the story in the newspaper and on television.
51. The poor man went into the big store in order to__________.
A: buy some drinks for Christmas B: go around the store and take a look
C: spend the Christmas Eve D: help the assistant sell goods
52. According to the context, the underlined part dead beat in the passage means____.

C: decided to enjoy his stay in the store
D: started to do something good for the store

B: the man had destroyed some of the TV sets and radios
C: it was not necessary to put the man into prison
D: it was not right for the judge not to do anything for the store
Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?
A: Most of the goods in this store are not used by people
B: The man knew he would not be punished because he was poor.

Every afternoon hundreds of thousands of youths fill internet cafes, switches on a game console (游戏机), or sit down to enter fantasy worlds. I’m talking about video games. These games can be fun and exciting, but we need to look out when this pastime becomes an addiction.
Video games can also be a bad effect on younger children who may be watching. Many video games are violent and the object in most of them is to kill other players. This does not send the right message to the children who need to be told that violence is not acceptable and need to be taught how to deal with situations maturely(成熟地). Even if we do need to sit down and play a violent video game, we need to make sure that it is not affect the younger people around us.
Playing a computer game in our spare time is not a bad thing. Games can be a great way to relax after studying, or to improve our creativity. However, games should not become the focus of our life. We cannot be addicted to them. Meanwhile we must learn to control ourselves and spend our time more wisely.

写作 ( 1) 参考作文:
In recent years, with the popularity of TV sets, the number of film-goers has become smaller and smaller while that of TV watchers has been on a rise. One of the reasons is that people have got so many channels with variety of programmes to choose that they would rather stay at home watching TV than go to the cinema. Another reason is that there are few good films that can attract audience. Besides, the price of film tickets is much higher than before. Therefore, films have to give way to TV.
写作 (2) ( 说明: summary 部分 5 分, 观点部分 20 分,)
参考作文:
Video games, which the youth like very much, can make us relaxed or even help our creativity, but getting addicted to them can have bad effects.
On one hand, video games, as a kind of exciting entertainment, can make us get relaxed after long-time studying and can practise our ability of fast thinking and responding. On the other hand, the exciting games always get youth lost in them. Then, the young students would pay more attention to playing virtual games instead of focusing on study, which without doubt will ruin their future. Given this, our teachers and parents are strongly against playing video games, which often unexpectedly have opposite effect. Therefore, I think our teachers and parents should allow us to play some video games under the instructions on the basis that it’s not in the way of studying.
