III. 文化背景知识:Festivals in autumn
Thanksgiving Day
The American Thanksgiving holiday began about four hundred years ago.
In 1620, over one hundred people sailed across the Atlantic Ocean(大西洋)to live in the New World. Their first winter in the New World was difficult. They had arrived too late to grow many crops; and without fresh food, half the people died. The following spring, the Indian taught them how to grow corn (maize 玉米), a new food for them. They also introduced other crops and how to hunt and fish.
In the autumn of 1621, all the crops were harvested. There people were very thankful, so they invited the Indians to have a big party. The Indians brought deer to roast with the turkeys. To this first Thanksgiving, the Indians even brought popcorn.
Later, many of these people celebrated the autumn harvest with a party of thanks. After the United States became an independent country, George Washington suggested the date November 26 as Thanksgiving Day. Then in 1864, at the end of a long civil war, Abraham Lincoln asked all Americans to set aside the last Thursday in November as a day of Thanksgiving.
1. Thanksgiving Days in America
Thanksgiving Day is an American national holiday. It often lasts four days. Americans celebrate it on the fourth Thursday of November each year. This day is to give thanks for the harvest of crops.
It is a day for family reunions just like the Mid-Autumn Festival in China. On the eve of Thanksgiving Day, family members drive or fly home. The next day, they sit around a table and enjoy dinner together. Roast turkey, sweet potatoes and different puddings(布丁)are traditional Thanksgiving supper dishes.
It is also a day for student to give thanks to parents and teachers. People still think of it as a day for giving thanks.
On Thanksgiving Day, all stores and shops are closed. In some cities, there are carnival(狂欢节)for children. In other cities, there are important football games. A lot of people watch television at home, so the streets become very quiet. The next day, however, everything becomes as it was before. People go to supermarkets and big department stores. On this day they can get cheaper things.
2. Thanksgiving Traditions
Thanksgiving Day is a holiday in Canada and the United States. Nobody goes to work or school on Thanksgiving.

When is Thanksgiving Day
Thanksgiving is not on the same day every year. But it is always in the same day every year. But it is always in the same month. In Canada, Thanksgiving is in October. In the U.S., it is in November.
How did Thanksgiving begin
Thanksgiving began in the United States in 1621. That year, the first people from England had arrived in the United States. The winter had been very hard. Everyone had been hungry. Some people had died of starvation.
But the spring and summer had been good. In the fall, there was a great harvest. Everyone knew there was enough food for the winter. They had a feast to celebrate the great harvest. That was the first Thanksgiving.
People in Canada began celebrating Thanksgiving in the 1750s.
How do people celebrate Thanksgiving today
Families make special food and eat it together. What special foods Turkey, squash and pumpkin pie.
After they have eaten, families like to play games together. Sometimes they play baseball or football.
Chinese Festival of the Autumn Moon (6 October 2006)
During September or October at full moon, on the fifteenth day of the eighth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, the festival of the Autumn Moon is celebrated. It is celebrated partly like many autumn festivals as a festival of lights, and before sitting down to a feast, there is a procession where animal shaped lanterns are carried each containing a candle.
Traditional food, including small round shaped rice cakes symbolizing the full moon, is eaten during the celebration. Rice cakes have a long history as they were once used to hide messages in, when the Chinese people were rebelling against their Mongol rulers.
Halloween (31 October)
Halloween is an ancient festival, it takes place on 31st October, and this is the evening before the Christian feast of All Hallows’ or All Saints’ Day. On that night it was believed that spirits and witches returned to earth to cause mischief.
Traditionally in America and Canada, children dress up in fancy dress usually something scary and visit their neighbors to play trick or treat when they hope to receive sweets as their treats. Games are often played such as 'bobbing the apple', where you have to try to get an apple out of a barrel of water without using your hands.
Pumpkins are hollowed out and carved, usually to show faces that are lit up when a candle is placed inside the pumpkin.
