Daniel Radcliffe, at twelve, is about to be a global superstar. For him it seems still 1 that he was 2 as an actor to play Harry Potter more than a year ago. He remembered that night he was told he 3 the part of Harry.

This passage is from a novel called ‘The Chrysalids’ by John Wyndham. In this novel, the storyteller is a boy named David.
When I was quite young I sometimes dreamt about a city. It was odd, because the dream began before I even knew what a city was. But I could see this city, by a big lake, with boats on the water and houses all around. Sometimes I saw silver things flying in the sky. It was a pretty place.
Once I asked my sister, Mary, where this city was. She told me that there was no such place. She said that long ago there might have been a city like that, but not now. Then she told me not to talk about the dream to anyone.
Mary did not want me to talk about anything that might make people think I was different from them. Where we lived, people were always looking out for odd things. They even thought it was strange that I was left-handed. So I did not talk about my dream to anyone, and as I got older, I did not have it so often.
And I never told anyone that I could talk to my cousin Rosalind without seeing her. I wasn’t sure if talking like that was odd. After some time I thought perhaps I was just like everyone else until the day I met Sophie.
One day I had gone off by myself, as I often did. I went down a cart-track from our farm until I came to a high ridge(山脊). This ridge was very long, and ran all the way round the land, as far as you could see. I had often gone along the top of it, but I hadn’t been down the other side. Somehow the land on the other side seemed strange, like another country. But today I played a game.
The rain had worn away some of the bank on the other side and I could push myself down the path made by the rain. I did it twice, rushing down the ridge and landing in the soft sand at the bottom. The third time I landed, a voice said,‘ Hello’.
Where did David live?
Near a lake. B. In the city. C. On a ridge. D. On a farm.
The underlined sentence in the first paragraph suggests that __________.

“The Lord of the Rings”, one of the best sellers in the new millennium (千年), was made of three parts --- “The Fellowship of the Ring”, “ Two Towers”, and “ The Return of the King”. Millions upon millions of people have read it in over 25 different languages, but fewer know about the author and the history of the composition of the creative masterpiece.
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born in South Africa in 1892. His parents died when he was a child. Living in England with his aunt, Tolkien and his cousins made up play languages, a hobby that led to Tolkien’s becoming skilled in Welsh, Greek, Gothic, Old Norse and Anglo-Saxon.
After graduating from Oxford, Tolkien served in World WarⅠ. In 1917, while recovering from trench fever, he began compositing the mythology for “The Rings”. As a professor of Anglo-Saxon in the 1930s at Oxford, Tolkien was part of an informal discussion group called the Inklings, which included several writers. The group was soon listening to chapters of Tolkien’s imaginative work “The Hobbit”.
Hobbit was a name Tolkien created for a local people that could best be described as half-sized members of the English rural (乡村的) class. Hobbits live in hillside holes. One of them, Bilbo Baggins, looks for treasures with a group of dwarves (侏儒). On the way, he meets the twisted, pitiful creature Gollum, from whom he sees a golden ring that makes the holder invisible.
One of Tolkien’s students persuaded her employer, publisher Allen & Unwin, to look at a draft (草稿). The chairman of the company, Stanley Unwin, thought that the best judge for a children’s book would be his ten-year-old son. The boy earned a shilling for reporting back that the adventure was exciting, and “The Hobbit” was published in 1937.
It sold so well that Unwin asked for a continuation. Over a dozen years later, in 1954, Tolkien produced “The Lord of the Rings”, a series of books so creative that they hold readers new and old after their publication.

Most painters discover a style of painting that is fit for them and stick to that, especially if people admire their pictures. But Picasso, the great Spanish painter, was like a man who had not yet found his own particular style of painting. He kept on struggling to find the perfect expression till his death in 1973.
Some of Picasso’s paintings are rich, soft colored and beautiful. Others ugly, cruel and strange. But such paintings allow us to imagine things for ourselves. They force us to say to ourselves, “What does he see that makes him paint like that?” And we begin to look under the surface of the things we see.
Picasso painted thousands of pictures in different styles. Sometimes he painted the natural look of things. Sometimes he seemed to break them apart and throw the pieces in our faces. He showed us what the mind knows as well as what the eyes see. At the age of 90, he remained as curious about the world as he had been when he was young. That is why people have called him “the youngest painter in the world”.

There probably is not a child in the world who has not batted a ball against a wall at some time in their life. But when one four-year-old Russian girl threw her first ball into the air and met it with a gentle forehand drive, it opened the way to a world most children only dreamt of. For this little Russian girl --- Maria Sharapova --- was taking the first steps of what is turning into a remarkable tennis career.
In July, Sharapova, 17, won her first Grand Slam (大满贯) title --- the Wimbledon Championships in England. Now she has just displayed her combination (结合) of tennis skills and cool beauty in the China Open, held in Beijing from September 10 to 26.
Unlike Anna Kourikova, who has not got a WTA title, Sharapova has won four since turning professional in 2001.
The girl’s talent was spotted by tennis legend Martina Navratilova when she was just six years old. Navratilova advised her parents to take their daughter to America to train in the famous Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Florida. The academy has produced many great players including Andre Agassi and Monica Seles.
Sharapova was not the sort of child to waste the sacrifices her family had made for her. While she stayed at the academy, her father rented a small flat an hour’s walk away and took construction work to add an income to the US $ 700 he had borrowed from friends to travel to the US. At the time, neither father nor daughter spoke English and both missed their home terribly.
Although Sharapova is described as being “so tough that she can bend steel” on the court, she is like any teenager off court. She is a fan of Harry Potter and Sherlock Holmes, and she collected stamps. “I’ve got thousands and, thanks to fans who send them to me from all over the world, my collection’s still growing.”
Sharapova’s maturity(成熟) makes it easy to forget she is still at school. She managed to fit her study in between a daily schedule of four hours’ tennis coaching, one hour’s fitness training, and flying around the world to tournaments. “I’m getting good marks at school, plenty of As, and I’ve got university at the back of my mind.”
16. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
A. Nearly each child once played some ball against a wall in his/her life.

C. Some fans compared Maria with Anna because they both won a WTA title.
