I'm writing to tell about the discussion we've had in the recent class meeting about whether Senior 3 students should take a lot of tonics to keep fit. Opinions are divided on the topic. Sixty percent of the students think it unnecessary to take any tonics. They hold the opinion that taking tonics will cause them to put on weight, which is bad for their health. What's more, the price of tonics is rather high. However, forty percent of the students point out that Senior 3 students have a lot more homework to do every day. So many students get tired and tonics can help to refresh themselves. In addition, they can't afford time to have sports. Personally, having right food is more important. The best way to stay healthy is to take exercise regularly.

M: Yes, we can have as many as we want, but most people decide to have only one or two. And some people decide not to have any.
W: Why do they decide not to have any? In the old days, we Chinese always wanted to have as many as possible. Some still do now.
M: Some people prefer to devote all their energy to their work or to seek their own interests and travel. And others see so many problems in the world that they refuse to bring children into such a difficult environment.
W: It's understandable.
Text 10
Good morning, everyone. Today I'd like to give a lecture on cycling tours. Well, for anyone who is considering going on a tour, the first thing to consider is safety. So it's very important indeed to consider what you wear. Wear something that can easily be seen, red jackets, for example. You know many accidents happen, because drivers simply fail to see the cyclists. Second, don't try to ride too far, toe quickly. Take your time, and if you feel tired, stop and rest. Remember that the joy of cycling tours is the ride itself. Get close to nature and see things you wouldn't normally see when you were traveling by car or bus. And if you're planning your journey in the summer, take plenty of water. You are advised to drink at least one liter of water every hour. If the weather is not very warm, make sure you take some warm clothes. And put them on when you stop riding. Even in cold weather you can become very warm when you are riding and then it is very easy to catch a cold, or even get a fever when you stop.

BEIJING,Nov.25,2005(Reuters)—China’s home-grown human bird flu vaccine (疫苗)is at least a year away from hitting the market but tests on humans have been approved (批准) by the government, head of the research drug company said on Friday.
Development of the vaccine started last year after bird flu outbreaks in
Page 6(共13页)
Thailand and Vietnam and animal trials(试验) have already been completed, said Yin Wei-dong,managing director of Sinovac Biotech.
“It is not a virus that is spreading from human to human,so we are very optimistic,” Yin told Reuters in an interview.
The deadly H5N1 made its first known jump to humans in Hong Kong in 1997,killing six people. The virus appeared again in late 2003 and is known to have infected 130 people in several parts of Asia, killing 68 of them.
“It is not decided yet when the human trials will begin. We just got approval(赞成) on November 22 by the State Food and Drug Administration,” Yin said.
Oregon,Nov.26,2005(AP)—The deadly strain of bird flu that appeared in Asia and has already spread to other parts of the world has not affected the Oregon poultry (家禽) industry or consumers, according to Oregon State University researchers.
There are many strains of bird flu that do not usually infect humans. But one strain, called H5N1,has jumped from chickens to humans and is blamed for(对…负责) more than 60 deaths in Asia.
International disease control experts are worried about a worldwide outbreak of bird flu, raising concerns such as whether it is safe to eat poultry.
But Oregon State University researchers say there is no proof that the virus can jump to humans by eating cooked poultry products.
“Consumers needn’t be overly concerned about bird flu,” said Jim Hermes,OSU Extension Service poultry specialist(专家).But he urged consumers to follow standard(标准) food safety practices in preparing poultry—including washing hands while preparing food, and proper cooking of poultry meat and eggs.
He noted that a 2003 outbreak of bird virus caused much damage to commercial poultry operations in California but did not get into Oregon because of industry safeguards.
60.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the first news report?
A.Human trials have already started but not yet successful.
B.Bird flu killed 68 Asian people in its second outbreak.
C.The bird flu virus is not one that spreads from human to human.
D.The government has agreed to have the vaccine tried on humans.
61.What does the first news report mainly talk about?
A.The new outbreak of the bird flu.
B.How the development of the bird flu vaccine is going on.
C.How many people died of bird flu.
D.What measures the government has taken to stop the spreading of bird flu.
Page 7 (共13页) 62.What does the underlined word “strains” probably mean?
A.signs. B.symbols. C.kinds. D.diseases.
63.What can we know from the second news report?
A.Because of the safety guards,Oregon poultry industry didn’t suffer any loss in the 2003 outbreak of bird flu.
B.People in Oregon are not concerned about bird flu.
C.People will develop bird flu even if they eat well-cooked poultry products.
D.H5N1 has caused more than 60 deaths worldwide.

Your mobile phone rings and instead of the usual electronic signals(电子信号) it’s playing your favourite music.A friend sends your favourite song to cheer you up.One day,a record company might forward(发送) new records and music videos to your phone.
The mobile business is getting into the music business. For the moment, the interest is in pleasant ring tones, but some companies are hoping to take full advantage of the next generation of mobile phones—all purpose gadgets (小机械,小装置)that blend phone, personal stereo(立体声),video player and Internet browser(浏览器) into one.
Finally, record companies might send new records and videos to fans who register(注册) their cell phone numbers.
The fans could pass music or songs along to friends—a kind of musical trading card.Unlike Internet tracks, mobile downloads(下载) would be easy for record companies to control, said former record industry official Ralph,Simon, who is now chairman of Yourmobile, based in Santa Monic,California.
“If you pass a song along to other phones through a network, each phone can be charged,” said Simon.“It’s like going through toll gate (收费站).There’s more possibility for copyright (版权)control than there is on the Internet.”
Massachusetts-based Converse is offering service in Portugal and the Netherlands that lets people record tunes on their voice mail or send music as presents to friends. Finally, people might be able to sing karaoke and pass them along. The company is sure that people will want to use music to reach out and touch someone.
“A mobile phone is not a listening machine, and you’ll be disappointed if you think you can change it into a radio,” said Ouzel,a creative manager for Converse in Israel.“But if someone sends you a song while you’re on vacation, you appreciate the feeling.”

“Life is speeding up. Everyone is getting unwell.”
This may sound like something someone would say today. But in fact,an unknown citizen who lived in Rome is AD 53 wrote it.
We all love new inventions. They are exciting, amazing and can change our lives.
But have all these developments really improved the quality of our lives?
Picture this : You’re rushing to finish your homework on the computer.Your mobile phone rings,a QQ message from your friend appears on the screen, and the noise from the television is getting louder and louder.Suddenly the computer goes blank and you lose all your work. Now you have to stay up all night to get it done. How calm and happy do you feel?
Inventions have speeded up our lives so much that they often leave us feeling stressed and tired. Why do you think people who live far away from noisy cities, who have no telephones,no cars, not even any electricity often seem to be happier? Perhaps because they lead simple lives.
One family in the UK went “back in time” to see what life was like without all the inventions we have today. The grandparents, with their daughter, and grandsons Benjamin,10 and Thomas,7,spent nine weeks in a 1940s house. They had no washing machine, microwave, computer or mobile phones.
Page 10(共13页)
The grandmother,Lyn,said,“It was hard physically. But not mentally.” She believed life was less materialistic(物质享乐主义的).“The more things you have, the more difficult life becomes,” she said. The boys said they fought less.Probably, they said, because there was less to fight over, such as their computer. Also Lyn changed from being a “fashionable,beer-drinking granny,to one who cooked things”.
Here are some simple ways to beat the stress often caused by our inventions!
●Don’t be available all the time.Turn off your mobile phone at certain times of the day.Don’t check your emails every day.
●Make sure you spend some time talking to your family.Set aside one evening a week when you don’t turn on the television.Play cards and chat instead.
●Get a low-tech hobby.Every day,do something in the old-fashioned way, such as walking to have a face-to-face meeting instead of using the email or telephone.
●Don’t worry too much about life—laugh more!
72.The passage is mainly about ______.
A.Problems with technology
B.improvements of our life with technology
C.the important roles technology pays in out everyday life
D.major changes which will be likely to happen to technology
73.The writer uses the quote (引语) at the beginning of the story to ______.
A.share a truth about life
B.tell us what life was like long time ago
