My uncle will never forget what happened to him yesterday.
Towards the evening, he was invited to an inn. He enjoyed his dinner with his friends, drinking a lot of beers. As a result, he got drunk. He insisted on driving home after the meal, although his friends tried to persuade him not to.
A few minutes later, he was winding his way on the street. And then his car ran into a tall tree. Fortunately, he was still alive, though seriously injured. The police came to the scene, and he was taken to hospital. Naturally, he had to stay in hospital for several days. Worse still, his driving license was revoked. How he regretted what he had done!

Dear Mr. Principal,
I am a senior student of our school. I’d like to say something about the canteen service in our school.
In general, the service is satisfactory. The hall is clean and tidy. The dishes look inviting and taste delicious as well. What’s more, the workers there treat us as their friends, which makes us feel very happy.
However, we feel the price of the meals is a little too high. Besides, we can only have a limited variety of dishes with little change every week. In addition, we often have to stand in line for a long time before we can get the meal. You could understand how precious time is to us students. Therefore, may I suggest something be done to solve the problems so that we can all enjoy our meals at school
Thanks for your consideration.

7. Dear Bob,
It’s very kind of you to write to me and let me know about your beautiful city. Now I’d like to tell you something about my hometown Jiangcheng.
The city stands on the bank of the Changjiang River. It is a beautiful place for people to live in.Its economy has been developing rapidly in the past ten years.New factories, houses and roads have been built.More schools and hospitals are available for its people. However, there are still some problems, such as water and air pollution and heavy traffic in rush hours. In my opinion,Jiangcheng should develop its economy scientifically.I would also think that the growth of its population should be brought under control so that we’ll have a better hometown in future.
Yours,
Xiao Hua
8 Dear Editor,
I’m writing to tell you about the discussion we’ve had about the good points and bad points of only children.
The good points are: greater care given to the child by the parents, better living conditions for the child and less difficulty suffered by the family. These will give the child a healthy and happy life.
However, every coin has two sides. The bad points of only children cannot be forgotten. They are easily spoilt by their parents, become lonely easily and usually depend heavily on their parents. These may all have
bad effects on the children.
So our conclusion is, it is too simple to just say whether it is good to be an only child or not.
9. 这是一篇图表类英语作文,体裁是说明文。说明中学生几种度假方式,并提出合理的建议,写作时,应注意上下文之间的衔接。
Dear editor,
Recently I have made a survey about how the middie school students spend their summer holiday. The results are as follows.
70% of the students say they are not happy at all during the summer holidays. They have private teach ers at home, or attend various training courses. Another 18% say they are happy, because they spend their holidays at their grandparents' house and have a good chance to make new friends. However, 9% feel lonely and bored, for they are not allowed to spend time with their friends, so they play the computer games at home.
I think the parents should trust their children and give them more freedom to arrange their own time. At the same time, they should encourage children to take part in more social experience to make their holidays more colorful.
Yours truly,
Li Ming
10 The Huang Mountain is a place of interest. here are lots of tourists seeing sights every day.Years ago, some of them paid no attention to environment protection. They threw about waste paper, plastic bags and tins.Besides, they killed animals, caught birds, destroyed trees and flowers.Worse still, they often made a fire to cook in the forest. That was dangerous.Changes have taken place now. When tourists leave, they take away rubbish with them. They no longer hunt animals.Plants are also protected. All the tourists carry their lunch in order not to start forest fire.We must sing high praise of the good deeds.
11 Dear editor:
Recently we have had a heated discussion on whether people should keep pets at home in cities.
Some students think it's a good idea to keep pets because many old people who live alone at home can get some comforts from pets. Besides , getting along well with animals will make our life interesting. On the contrary the other students are against the idea. In their opinion if too many people keep pets at home, it's bad for the environment. What is worse, pets may make too much noise and even attack people.
I like animals, so I don't think it's bad to keep pets at home. But we must take some measures to prevent them from polluting our environment.
12 A meaningful Activity
Our school has now started an activity called “Build Civilized Classes and a Harmonious Campus.” The topic is “ Get Rid of Bad Habits and Greet Civilization”.
Bad habits do exist. Some students throw rubbish everywhere or spit in public. Some wear long hair. Others are even addicted to smoking and drinking. We require that the students break away from these bad habits.
We urge the students to wear their school uniform and be polite to others.
During the activity, we’ll hold a picture show, a competition of classroom and dormitory decorations and so on.
13 Dear Dave,
How nice to hear from you again. Now let me tell you something about the beautifying work in Beijing for the 2008 Olympic Games. Our slogan is “Green Olympics”. 12.2 billion dollars will be spent on this project. A lot more trees, flowers and grass will be planted in many places to make Beijing more beautiful. We will use clean energy and try our best to make waste water clean and reuse it. In 2008, you will see Beijing as beautiful as a garden, with cleaner water and a clearer sky.
I look forward to meeting you in Beijing in 2008.
Yours,
Li Hua
13. Should students make friends on line Some people say yes. The internet helps make many friends. Chatting on line, students can more freely express their feelings and opinions, and even get help with their foreign language studies.
Others, however, think students should not. They say making friends on line is a waste of time, which should be spent more meaningfully on study. Besides, some students get cheated on line.
It is my opinion that students should place their study, health and safety before other things. As for friendship, we can readily find it in our classmates and other people around us.
