第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题,每题2分,满分40分)

Turning on the TV, a wonderful scene comes to your eyes—a group of men , tall , strong and handsome , and women , young , beautiful and attractive , too . Together they eat in the finest restaurants , traveling everywhere around the world by luxurious planes and pleasure ships . They are models .
Do you envy them ? What sort of life are models leading ? Is it a wonderful life for a young lady or a young man ?
A few models are well-known actors or actresses who can make a lot of money only by showing themselves off in commercials . But the majority of them are just curious to see what it is like . They’d like to be models just because they are attracted by what they imagine—models earn a lot of money and lead a glorious life . This is true for those who are very successful . However , most models find it difficult to get work . Very few can earn enough to live on , and for all models their expenses are high . Their agents claim about 20% of the earnings , and no model will get very far without a clever agent . Besides , they have to buy good clothing . They also have to pay to travel to interviews and reach the places where the work is to be done .
Interviews for a model job are known as cattle-markets in the modeling world , and not without a good reason . A top model can choose his or her work , demand and receive high fees and has his or her expenses paid . But for most models , the situation is quite different . And agent or employer inspects each model much as a farmer inspects cattle at a market . Intelligence , qualifications and personal characteristics count for little against good looks and tight figures . For all except the very few lucky ones , the life of a model is a continual search for work , trying to sell himself or herself in the face of fierce competition and , sometimes , not particularly moral standards on the part of some employers .
Immigration officials at the airport look suspiciously at a girl whose passport shows her occupation as “Model” , and these are men and women of considerable experience of the world . It comes no surprise to find that some models prefer to put “Secretary” or “Businessman” as their jobs in their passports .
Modeling is a changeable world with great rewards for a tiny minority but not for the majority .

Speeding off in a stolen car , the thief thinks he has got a great catch . But he is for an unwelcome surprise . The car is fitted with a remote immobilizer (锁止器), and a radio signal from a control center miles away will ensure that once the thief switches the engine off , he will not be able to start is again .
The idea goes like this . A control box fitted to the car contains a mini-cell phone , a microprocessor and memory , and a GPS (全球定位系统) satellite positioning receiver . If the car is stolen , a coded cell phone signal will tell the control center to block the vehicle’s engine management system and prevent the engine being restarted .
In the UK, a set of technical fixes is already making life harder for car thieves . “The pattern of vehicle crime has changed,” says Martyn Randall, a security expert . He says it would only take him a few minutes to teach a person how to steal a car , using a bare minimum of tools . But only if the car is more than 10 years old .
Modern cars are far tougher to steal , as their engine management computer won’t allow them to start unless they receive a unique ID code beamed out by the ignition (点火) key . In the UK, technologies like this have helped achieve a 31% drop in vehicle-related crime since 1997.
But determined criminals are still managing to find other ways to steal cars , often by getting hold of the owner’s keys . Any key theft is responsible for 40% of the thefts of vehicles fitted with a tracking system .
If the car travels 100 meters without the driver confirming their ID, the system will send a signal to an operation center that it has been stolen . The hundred meters minimum avoids false alarms due to inaccuracies in the GPS signal .
Staff at the center will then contact the owner to confirm that the car really is missing , and keep police informed of the vehicle’s movements via the car’s GPS unit .
61.What’s the fun_ction of the remote immobilizer fitted to a car ?
A.To allow the car to lock automatically when stolen .
B.To prevent the car thief from restarting it once it stops
C.To help the police make a surprise attack on the car thief .
D.To prevent car theft by sending a radio signal to the car owner .

A.A GPS satellite positioning receiver .
B.A special cell phone signal .
C.A unique ID card.
D.a coded ignition key .
64.Why does the tracking system set a 100-metre minimum before sending an alarm to the operation center ?
A.To give the driver time to contact the operations center .
B.To allow for possible errors in the GPS system .
C.To keep police informed of the car’s movements .
D.To leave time for the operations center to give an alarm .
65.What will the operation center do first after receiving an alarm ?
A.Start the tracking system . B.Locate the missing car .
C.Contact the car owner . D.Block the car engine .

Where do pesticides (杀虫剂) fit into the picture of environmental disease ? We have seen that they now pollute soil , water ,and food , that they have the power to make our streams fishless and our gardens and woodlands silent and birdless .Man, however much he may like to pretend the contrary , is part of nature. Can he escape a pollution that is now so thoroughly distributed throughout our world ?
We know that even single exposures to these chemicals , if the amount is large enough , can cause extremely severe poisoning . But this is not the major problem . The sudden illness or death of farmers , farm workers , and other exposed to sufficient quantities of pesticides are very sad and should not occur . For the population as a whole , we must be more concerned with the delayed effects of absorbing small amounts of the pesticides that invisibly pollute our world .
Responsible public health officials have pointed out that the biological effects of chemicals are cumulative (积累的)over long periods of time , and that the danger to the individual may depend on the sum of the exposure received throughout his lifetime . For these very reasons the danger is easily ignored . It is human nature to shake off what may seem to us a threat of future disaster . “Men are naturally most impressed by diseases which have obvious signs,” says a wise physician , Dr, Rene Doubos , “yet some of their worst enemies slowly approach them unnoticed.”
66.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined sentence ?
A.Man appeared indifferent to what happens in nature .

.
A.is not the worst of the negative consequences resulting from the use of pesticides
B.now occurs most frequently among all accidental deaths
C.has sharply increased so as to become the center of public attention
D.is unavoidable because people can’t do without pesticides in farming
69.People tend to ignore the delayed effects of exposure to chemicals because .
A.limited exposure to them does little harm to people’s health
B.the present is more important for them than the future
C.the danger does not become apparent immediately
D.humans are capable of resisting small amounts of poisoning
70.It can be concluded from Dr Doubos’ remarks that .
A.people find invisible diseases difficult to deal with
B.attacks by hidden enemies tend to be fatal
C.diseases with obvious signs are easy to cure
D.people tend to overlook hidden dangers caused by pesticides

Short people, studies have shown , are more likely to have a stroke (中风), suffer from high blood pressures and heart disease and be bullied in school .
Now, researchers report that short people—at least in the past—were also more likely to die at a younger age than their taller peers .
Their study , published in the Journal of Epidemiology (流行病学) and Community Health , found that short bones have something to do with short life for more than 1,000 years . The conclusion was based on 490 sets of adult skeletal (骨架的) remains from an archaeological site in northeastern England , YC dating from the 9th century to about 1850 .
About 55% of men and 73% of women died before the age of 45, and 39% of men and 56% of women died before age 30. The risk of death before age 30 declined as bone length increased .
“This study provides evidence from an archaeological sample that long bone length is connected with age at death-those with smaller bones tend to die younger,” according to Dr. D.J. Gunnell of the university of Bristol in the UK and colleagues .
While it is not clear why short stature (身材)might be linked to earlier death , the researchers point out that height is an indicator of childhood nutrition, which may have long-lasting effect on health .
“Mechanism (身体结构) for height-mortality (死亡) associations in the past may differ from those today , for example , short stature may have increased the risk of death in childbirth and this may explain the higher risk of premature (未成熟的) mortality in women,” Gunnell and colleagues write .
“However , short bones , it would appear , have always been a marker of a short life,” the authors conclude .
71.The title of the passage should be .
A.Short people and their taller peers B.Short stature and short life
C.Men and women D.Long life and short life
72.“An indicator” in Paragraph 6 means .
A.a study B.a risk C.a marker D.an age

第Ⅱ卷(共45分)
第一节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)
How to protect child Web fans from unsuitable material online while encouraging them to use the Internet has long been discussed .
For some parents , the Internet seems like a jungle , filled with dangers for their children . But jungles contain wonders as well as dangers . With good guides and some education , the madness for the Internet can be safely conducted . “Kids have to be online . If we tell our kids they can’t have access to the Internet , we are cutting them off from their future .”
Most kids have started to use search engines . Many of them are great for finding tons of interesting Internet sites , but they can also locate places where you might not want your kids to go . There are search engines designed just for kids . One certain software contains only sites that have been selected as safe .The most popular way to limit access would be to use what is known as a “content screener”. But this can be wholly reliable , and the best thing parents can do is to talk to their kids and let them know what is OK or not OK to see or do on the Internet . Another way is that Mum or Dad is nearby when the child is surfing the Internet .
A few other tips :
——Don’t put the PC in a child’s room but where Mum or Dad can keep an eye on things . That also makes the Internet more of a family activity .
——Ask your child what he or she has been doing and about any friends they make online .
——Tell your child not to give online strangers personal information , especially like address and phone number .
——And tell your child never to talk to people he or she meets online over the phone , send them anything , accept anything from them or agree to meet with them unless you go along .
76.What is the best title of the passage ? (Please answer within 10 words )
77.Which sentence in the passage can be replaced by the following one ?
We must allow children to be online or their future will be affected .
78.Please fill in the blank in Paragraph five with proper words or phrases to completed the sentence . (Please answer within 10 words )
79.Which of the suggestions do you think is the best one ? Why ?
(Please answer within 30 words)

Happiness
Happiness means different things to different people . For example , some students believe that if they have much money or large possessions , they will be happy . They believe that they will be able to do anything they want to if they have much money . Some students think that they should be in good health , and do whatever they like . Many students wish to have much wealth from their parents . In this way , they don’t have to work hard , and they can own everything . I don’t quite agree with the above points . I don’t think money means happiness . We can’t buy many of the things with money , such as health , happiness and knowledge . I value knowledge , which makes me happy , for I can do much for mankind with knowledge . Although different people value happiness differently , my “wealth” of happiness is in my study .(136 )

M:Well, I’ve made the reservations , but there are still some details to make sure . Your plane leaves at eight-thirty , so I’ll collect you from your house at six .
W:Six! I’ll have to get up in the middle of the night .
M:I’m sorry. You have to check in by seven and I think there will probably be a long queue .
W:Oh, very well . What about my meetings ?
M:First , the Managing Director is coming to the airport to meet you .
W:Good . We’ll be able to talk on the way to the factory .
M:The conference does not open until noon. I’ll make sure you have a programme before you leave .
W:Thank you . I’ll read it on the plane , I expect . Now , let’s get on with some of today’s work .!
M:By all means !
