Do “Lucky Numbers” Really Bring Good Luck?
My friend Mary was born on June 13, 1986. She is always dissatisfied with her birthday because 13 is a bad number. A lot of people believed good numbers bring good luck and bad numbers bring disaster. So, 13, 4 and other “ bad” numbers are wiped off from cards, lists, menus, etc.
I think numbers have nothing to do with luck. Numbers are created for counting. There is no relationship between a certain number and one’s fate. There are many people who succeed in spite of “close relationship” to bad numbers. There are also a lot of people, who should have been blessed by “lucky” numbers, involved in accidents. Take my friend Mary for example, she achieved a good study at many tests and got good reputation in her career.
In a word, numbers are numbers. They stand for nothing. Numbers have nothing to do with luck.

Serious gamblers, especially those who play horses, consider jade to be a lucky stone. Although astrologers(占星家) claim that the brilliant green mineral can bring bad luck to people born under the signs of Sagittarius or Gemini, beads(珠子) and amulets(护身符) made from it are regarded as lucky charms all over the world.

And from ancient times through the Middle Ages, it was used as a prescription for curing kidney(肾) and digestive diseases. When Europeans first arrived in Central America, they were amazed to discover that the Incas in Peru shared this belief and routinely relied on jade charms to prevent kidney problems.
In many cultures, jade amulets are considered the best possible protection for women in childbirth. Some believe the stone is a bringer of rain and that it can drive away beasts and evil spirits. These are all chosen from surveys of over 15,000 students about their own interests in cross-cultural communication.
“Let’s Speak” and “Speak Up” share a special but excellent way that allows all students to take part.
The series has questions which start thinking and then help collect opinions about personal topics. Conversation practice is provided by ready-to-use models of basic exchanges on the topic. Also the cultural information presented in the series comes in the form of interesting, relevant facts and ideas from other countries through listening tasks and Culture Quiz exercises.
Team activities in books provide lively problem-solving games to enable sharing and comparison of cultural values.
“Let’s Speak” is fit for entry-level students of all ages. “Speak Up” provides the needs of higher-level beginners, offering the same careful listening and speaking help, but with slightly more open-ended discussion.

Mr. Peter Johnson, aged twenty three, battled for half an hour to escape from his trapped car yesterday when it landed upside down in three feet of water. Mr. Johnson took the only escape route—through the boot.
Mr. Johnson’s car had finished up in a ditch at Romeney Marsin, Kent, after slipping on ice and hitting a bank. “Fortunately, the water began to come in slowly,” Mr. Johnson said. “I couldn’t force the doors because they were jammed against the walls of the ditch and dared not open the windows because I knew water would come flooding in.”
Mr. Johnson, a sweet salesman of Sittingborne, Kent, first tried to attract the attention of other motorists by sounding the horn and hammering on the roof and boot. Then he began his struggle to escape.
Later he said, “ It was really a halfpenny which saved my life.: It was the only coin I had in my pocket and I used it to unscrew the back seat to get into the boot. I hammered desperately with a hammer trying to make someone hear, but no help came.
It took ten minutes to unscrew the seat---and a further ten minutes to clear the sweet samples from the boot. Then Mr. Johnson found a wrench and began to work on the boot lock. Fifteen minutes passed by. “It was the only chance I had. Finally it gave, but as soon as I moved the boot lid, the water and mud poured in. I forced the lid down into the mud and scrambled clear as the car filled up.”
His hands and arms cut and bruised, Mr. Johnson got to Beckett Farm nearby, where he was looked after by the farmer’s wife, Mrs. Lucy Bates. Huddled in a blanked, he said, “That night, the car had sunk into two feet of mud at the bottom of the ditch.
