An experimental treatment that causes AIDS patients to develop a dangerously high fever has shown promise as a way of prolonging and improving the patients' life.
Called the Biologic-HT System, the new treatment lets doctors extract ( 抽出) the blood of a patient and heat it before circulating it back into the body. The heated blood causes the patient's body temperature to rise above 42 degrees Celsius.. in people with AIDS, that increase in temperature kills some heat-sensitive HIV, the virus most doctors say causes AIDS.
Heating the blood of AIDS patients has been tried before, say doctors. But during previous attempts, the treatment induced (caused) deadly chemical changes in the blood. The Biologic-HT System prevents those changes from happening, allowing the heat to kill viruses with few ill side effects.
The new heat treatment cannot be considered a cure for AIDS, says president of the company that makes the system. He says the treatment doesn't kill all traces of the virus. However, it kills enough virus particles ( 微粒 ) to give a patient's immune system a reprieve ( 暂减) in its deadly fight against HIV.
Tests of the 13iologic-HT treatment began on 36 patients earlier this year The treatment takes about four hours, and the patient normally feels well enough to leave the hospital or clinic the following morning.
So far, the patients who have had the treatment say they feel better and have developed no new opportunistic infections ( 感染) - diseases that strike people with damaged immune systems, The patients also have experienced about a 50% increase in the number of-T cells in their bodies, T cells are key disease fighting cells of the immune system and the main target of HIV.

By the late nineteenth century, the focus for the engineers and builders of tunnels was beginning to shift from Europe to the United States and especially New York, where the rivers encircling Manhattan caused the imagination of tunnelers and challenged their ingenuity (机智). The first to accept the challenge was a somewhat mysterious Californian named De Witt Clinton Haskin, who turned up in New York in the 1870's with a proposal to tunnel through the mud under the Hudson River between Manhattan and Jersey City.
Haskin eventually abandoned the risky project. But a company organized by William McAdoo resumed (started again)the attack in 1902, working from both directions. McAdoo's men were forced to blast ( 爆破) when they ran into an unexpected ledge of rock, but with this difficulty overcome, the two headings met in 1904 and McAdoo put on oilskins to become the Hudson's first underwater bank-to-bank pedestrian.
World's Work magazine proudly reported in 1906 that New York could now be described as "a body of land surrounded by tunnels". Three one-way shafts beneath the Hudson and two under the Harlem

For an increasing number of students at American universities, Old is suddenly in. The reason is obvious: the graying of America means jobs. Coupled with the aging of the baby- boom (生育高峰) generation, a longer life span ( 持续时间 ) means that the nation's elderly population is bound to expand significantly over the next 50 years. By 2050, 25 percent of all Americans will be older than 65, up from 14 percent in 1995. The change poses (causes) profound questions for government and society, of course. But it also creates career opportunities in medicine and health professions, and in law and business as well. "In addition to the doctors, we're going to need more sociologists, biologists, urban planners and specialized lawyers," says Professor Edward Schneider of the University of Southern California's (USC) School of Gerontology ( 老年学 ).
Lawyers can specialize in "elder law," which covers everything from trusts and estates (遗产) to nursing-home abuse and age discrimination. Businessmen see huge opportunities in the elder market because the baby boomers, 74 million strong, are likely to be the wealthiest group of retirees in human, history. "Any student who combines an expert knowledge in gerontology with, say, an MBA or law degree will have a license to print money," one professor says.
Margarita Santos is a 21-year-old senior at USC. She began college as a biology major but found she was "really bored with bacteria." So she took a class in gerontology and discovered that she liked it. She says, "I did volunteer work in retirement homes and' it was very satisfying."

73. Why can businessmen make money in the growing elder market?
A. They can employ more gerontologists.
B. Retirees are more generous in spending money.
C. There are more elderly people working than before.
D. The elderly possess an huge purchasing power.
74. Who can make big money in the new century according to the passage?
A. Professionals with a good knowledge of gerontology.
B. College graduates with an MBA or law degree.
C. The volunteer workers in retirement homes.
D. Retirees who are business-minded.
75. It can be seen from the passage that the expansion of America's elderly population

If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven't you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brainpower. Researchers found that learning other languages changes gray matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.
The study also found the effect is greater on the younger people who learn a second language.
A team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons (英国土著人) who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of "early bilinguals" who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.
Scans showed that grey matter density (密度)in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without _______ . But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference is.
"Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language," said the scientists.
It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. "Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible," he said. "You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas."
