Plants seem to know which way is up and which way is down. Furthermore, they seem to know right from left. If a cutting from a Lombardy poplar (白杨树) is kept alive, new shoots will grow from the end that grew uppermost in the tree.
There is no visible difference between the top and the bottom of the living stick, even under a microscope. Even so, the stick will not send out shoots from the end it views as bottom even if this end happens to be on top.
Scientists studying this subject further split their cuttings lengthwise. To their surprise, they made another interesting discovery. A good many more buds grew on the right-hand side of the split surface than on the left. They split the sticks again and found that the buds again grew on the right side.
The results of the entire study showed a 60-40 preference for the right side, proving that growing plants are basically “right-handed”.
Scientists examining the ends of a fresh cutting find ______.
very little difference between them
one end slightly darker than the other
no difference between them
a difference that only the microscope reveals (展现)
If a cutting is placed upside down in the laboratory ______.
the part on top will sprout leaves
the original “up” will sprout leaves
leaves will grow at either end
the cutting will not develop at all
If the cutting is sliced in half length wise, the buds will ______.
appear mostly on the right edge of the surface
all appear on the left edge of the surface
not grow at all
grow on the “down” end
When scientists split the sticks a second time, the cuttings ______.
failed to bud again
still exhibited “right-handedness”
no longer exhibited knowledge of left and right
appeared to lose knowledge of original up and down
The best title for this selection is ______.
Growing Plants Have a Sense of Direction
A Well-known Plant Experiment
How Plants Grow
The Basis for Right-Handedness

Let’s see what ten-year-old Elizabeth meant when she said to father, “But, Dad, you can’t be healthy if you’re dead.”
Dad, in a hurry to get home before dark so he could go for a run, had forgotten to wear his safety belt – a mistake 75% of the US population make every day. The big question is why.
There have been many myths about safety belts ever since their first appearance in cars forty years ago. The following are three of the most common.
Myth Number One: It’s best to be “thrown clear” of a serious accident.
Truth: Sorry, but any accident serious enough to “throw you clear” is also going to be serious enough to give you a very bad landing. And chances are you’ll have travelled through a windshield (挡风玻璃) or door to do it. Studies show that chances of dying after a car accident are twenty-five times greater in cases where people are “thrown clear”.
Myth Number Two: Safety belts “trap” people in cars that are burning or sinking in water.
Truth: Sorry again, but studies show that people knocked unconscious (昏迷) due to not wearing safety belts have a greater chance of dying in these accidents. People wearing safety belts are usually protected to the point of having a clear head to free themselves from such dangerous situations, not to be trapped in them.
Myth Number Three: Safety belts aren’t needed at speeds of less than 30 miles per hour (mph).
Truth: When two cars traveling at 30 mph hit each other, an unbelted driver would meet the windshield with a force equal to driving headfirst into the ground from a height of 10 meters.

A. may be knocked down by other cars
B. may get seriously hurt going thrown out of the car
C. may find it impossible to get away from the seat
D. may get caught in the car door
54. Some people prefer to drive without wearing a safety belt because they believe .

The Romans built great “aqueducts” to carry fresh water from the mountains to the cities. Many of these aqueducts are still standing today. The Romans also built great pipes under the ground to carry away the sewage. In Rome, one of these sewage pipes (sewers) is still used today; it is 2,000 years old. The Roman Emperors even set up a government health service. They built the first great public hospitals in Europe, and they paid doctors to look after poor people.
Then the Roman Empire fell to pieces, these civilized methods of treatment disappeared from most of Europe, for more than a thousand years. People went back to the old way. They lived in dirty conditions which helped to cause diseases; and they asked God to cure the diseases. They shut up mentally sick people in prisons. Or they burnt them alive because they were supposed to have magic powers.
But the work of the Greek and Roman doctors was not lost. Over a thousand years ago, the Arabs moved into many of the Mediterranean countries. They took big parts of the old Roman lands. They translated the Greek and Roman medical books into Arabic. Arab doctors themselves made many new discoveries.
When civilization at last came back to Europe, men once again translated the Greek and Roman works on medicine into Latin. Slowly-very slowly-European doctors discovered again the things that the Greeks and Romans had known so long ago. Slowly, they began to make new discoveries. They found out more about the way body works-the way our blood goes round our bodies, the way our nerves send messages from our brains to our muscles, the way these muscles move our bodies.

A. something which was built long ago
B. something invented by a Roman Emperor
C. a big pipe under the ground
D. something built to supply clean water for the citizens
57. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. A government health service was set up in ancient Rome.
B. The first public hospital in Europe was built in Rome.
C. In ancient Rome doctors were paid by the government.
D. Those who were mentally sick were all burnt alive in the Roman Empire.
58. In Europe, people stopped using such civilized treatments .
A. after they discovered better methods
B. because these methods were too old
C. when they discovered these treatments helped to cause diseases
D. after the fall of the Roman Empire
59. From this article we’ve learned that the Arabs .
A. made more discoveries than the Romans
B. helped to keep the Roman medical works
C. discovered more about the way the human body works
D. occupied big parts of the old Roman lands 2,000 years ago
60. This article is mainly about .
A. the contributions made by the Roman and Arabs to the promotion of public health

Motivation is vital for you as an English learner, because the motivated learner will always do better than the unmotivated learner.
I have been in China now for four years. I still have not learnt Chinese. Why? Because I can quite easily manage without it. I do not need Chinese to be able to teach my students English. If I travel somewhere in Beijing, I take a taxi and use mobile to ask a Chinese friend (who speaks Good English) to tell the taxi driver where to go. If I go to a restaurant I will choose one which has an English menu or I will point at a picture of the dish I require. I do know some basic Chinese words but I never use them because I do not have to. So, over four years I have learnt that I can live in China without learning Chinese.
Now you may laugh at me and say that I am a stupid foreigner. But pause for a minute and apply my story to yourself. You will find that, just like me, you have no motivation to learn a foreign language which you will rarely, if ever, use. But just imagine if I met a pretty, clever Chinese girl and fell in love with her and decided to marry her. How could I really communicate with her if I did not know Chinese? What about her parents? What about our son or daughter?…… I would immediately start learning Chinese and practice it every day and in every way.
Now, what would it take to really motivate you to learn English? Only you can answer that question but the real key to quickly learn English is to be motivated. This motivation either come from forces within you or outside you.

Dear Mr. Steward,
I’m writing to tell you about my winter vacation because it reminded me of my last winter vacation when you paid me a visit after I broke my leg. This year, I went to visit my grandparents in my hometown and we spent the Spring Festival there. On the Spring Festival eve, we had a big meal with all the family members and we kids played fireworks and got lucky money from the elder as a tradition to celebrate this important Chinese festival. Besides having fun, I also spent some of my time doing my homework.
I hope you also had a wonderful vacation in China.
Yours,
Lily
第二节:任务写作
In the passage, the writer, an English teacher in China, takes his own experience in learning Chinese as an example to show us how important motivation is in foreign language learning. If you have a specific aim in learning a foreign language, you will get a better result. But if you take learning a foreign language as a burden, you will never learn it well.
I quite agree with the writer. Nowadays some students lack a strong or a clear motivation in their studies. They study only because their parents want them to study, they cannot concentrate all their efforts on study and when they meet with some difficulties, they will easily give it up. Of course, their results in study are not satisfactory. In my opinion, we should remember that we are studying for the future of our country and our society as well as that of ours.
