NEW MEXICO—Make way for the final highrise project: the space elevator(梯). Long viewed as science story “imagineering", researchers are gathering strength in their search of something to push this uplifting imagination into actuality.
The elevator would be a smooth 62,000-mile ride up a long cable. Payloads(货物)can shake up the Earth?to space cable, experiencing no large launch forces, slowly climbing from one atmosphere to space.?
Science fiction writers have been mentioning space elevators for years. Some call it a “thought experiment", but others point out that space exploration B.C.—“Before Cable”—will pale compared with what's possible within ten to fifteen years.?
Eards told SPACE. Com that he's been wrapped up in space elevator work for some three years, supported by NIAC program.“I'm convinced that the space elevator is practical and doable." In 15 years we could have a dozen cables running at top speed putting 50 tons in space every day for even less, including upper middle class individuals wanting a joyride(观光) into space.
For a space elevator to fun_ction, a cable with one end attached(锚定)to the Earth's surface stretches upwards, reaching beyond Earth orbit. The cable remains unmoving over a single position on Earth. This cable, once in position, can be lifted from Earth by machines, right into Earth orbit. The hardest challenge has been finding a super strong cable material. “That's what has kept this idea in science fiction for 40 years," Eards said. “But the right cable stuff is no longer thought of as ‘unoainium’ (无法得到),” he said. “The answer is carbon nanotube composite ribbon.(碳纳米管合成缆绳).”?
41.What is the space elevator mentioned in this text??
A. It is a means of imaginary transportation by which people could reach space.?
B. It is a smooth 62,000-mile cable with which people carry goods to space now.?
C. It is a thought experiment which scientists are now doing.?
D. It is something that people are now searching for.?
42. What is the meaning of “wrapped up in "as the words are used in the text??
A. Contained. B. Surrounded by. C. Deeply devoted to. D. Covered with.?
43. The main purpose of writing this text is __________.
A. to announce the realization of space elevator? B. to introduce the future space elevator?
C. to attract more people to go sightseeing in space
D. to show the difficulty in building space elevator?

There are two kinds of people in the world. Those of the first kind are born idles(游手好闲者),taking interest in nothing. It seems what they live for is to pass time idly. They simply don’t know why they have to do so, nor will they bother to ask. The other kind are those who take things seriously and never wish to idle away their life. But only a part of the second group are eager enough to make success. All the others fail to make enough effort to make their dreams come true.
Why things so happen to them? What are the reasons?
I later find out that some people are determined. They are “igniters” that catch fire of their own, giving light and heat. But that’s not the case with others. They may be fuels but not igniters. As pieces of wood or coal, they need a match or a lighter to make them burn so that their energy can be released to give off light and heat.
The majority of people need some igniter to light them. Thus igniter becomes a must for those people to succeed. Unless a suitable igniter comes their way, they will always remain idle like cold unused firewood or coal.
Fortunately , such an igniter is not difficult to meet. One may find it in an instructive book, a film story ,a few words of a close friend, some advice of a good teacher, a pleasant journey, or an unexpected love.
Any of these, coming at the right time, can serve as an igniter to start one’s enthusiasm for learning or for a better career, to turn him from a passive state of waiting to an active state of pursuing, to lend him strength to go ahead bravely. In that case, what he has prepared for years will be quickly turned into fruitful reality.
Such an igniter may turn up of itself , but most likely we have to find it ourselves. Never let a chance slide away, for it is the key to your success.

A. Idlers B. Igniters C. Fuels D. Lighters

This will be a happy spring for students at Chengdu No 7 Yucai High School, Sichuan. They were promised a group outing organized by the school.
The good news came right after a protest letter signed by all 3,000 students was presented to school leaders last Monday. Ye Na, chairman of the student Union, composed the letter: Return spring outings to us!
“Spring is in the air, rape seed flowers are blooming, kites and birds are flying, but we’re still caged in classrooms…”wrote the Senior 2 girl.
The school responded with a public hearing(听证会). Last Wednesday, students, parents and teachers were invited to campus to discuss the issue. Surprisingly, all participants agreed on a spring outing.
“I understand the students, but it’s hard to make decisions as we have to consider security and parents’ worries. I’m happy that I supported it.” Said Zhang Feng, dean of student affairs.
“As some accidents happen to students on organized trips, many schools have not planned spring outings since 2000. This year’s expectation is bringing cheerful smiles.
“As boarding students, we have few opportunities to go out. If no group outings are organized, how can we enjoy friendships outside school? It’s a long time since my last spring outing in primary school,” said Dai Junhao,15.
Teenagers in other countries are also expecting spring to come as their schools plan seasonal outings every year.
“My school plans a wide variety of outings, such as performances, picnic, swimming and museum trips. But we have to have our parents sign a form legal, health and security problems so the school can do what they think is in our best interest. We are always accompanied by adults.”
------- Lauren Bly, 16, US
“In Italian schools everybody waits for the good reason because they have the opportunity to go on a seven-day trip to a famous and old European city like Prague, Berlin, London, Rome, Madrid… If our parents allow us to go they’ll sign releases, pay for our trip and pay for insurance. A teacher is present for every 10 students, assuring (使确信)parents that their sons and daughters are safe.”

For hundreds of years humans have dreamt of finding life on distant planets. Now the hope of discovering real evidence of life has greatly increased.
NASN’s Mars detector(探测器), Opportunity, succeeded in finding signs that water once existed on the planet. Opportunity landed on Mars in January. Scientists now believe that the planet could once have supported life .
This discovery was chosen by Science, one of the world’s leading magazines, as the most important scientific achievement of 2004 last Friday.
“This little , wheeled, one—armed box went around another planet and has done something no human has ever managed,” according to Science. “It has discovered another place in the universe where life could once have existed.”
Although we still can’t say that life could have existed in this environment, it is now certain that there was water on Mars,” said Steve Squyres, one of the scientists working on the Mars mission.
The evidence comes from pictures and chemical readings taken by Opportunity. It includes marks on rocks like those caused by flowing water on Earth and salty chemicals like those found in dried—out sea—beds. Scientists said the new evidence proved beyond doubt that water has been existed on Mars. But it is still unknown whether the water on Mars was like an ocean or just ice.
While Opportunity has not found any signs of life, the presence of water means life is possible. “In everything we know about life on Earth, there is no example without liquid water,” Squyres said. “So water is important for the search or life on Mars.”
Researchers agree that a future mission should bring back physical samples. But some scientists worry about the risk that this could introduce dangerous foreign creatures to Earth.
“The problem here is how to get the samples back,” Squyre replied. “I think it is our responsibility to limit any risk.”

Top Meal of the Day
A recent study shows that nearly half of the school kids do not eat breakfast. These teenagers tend to feel sleepy all day and have bad memories, resulting in their failure to get high marks in tests.
Some students studying late into the night choose to miss breakfast so that they can have a few extra minutes in bed. Others are given money to buy their breakfast on the way to school with their parents too busy to prepare it for them. In addition, a few school girls want to stay slim and often go to school without breakfast.
In fact, the morning meal plays an important part. It can provide 30 percent of the whole day's energy. For a creative mind and better judgment, school kids should start their day with a regular breakfast.
