Stepping into a pool of water is common enough, but who could ever imagine stepping into a pool of fish? In February of 1974, Bill Tapp, an Australian farmer, saw a rain of fish that covered his farm. How surprised he must have been!
What caused this strange occurrence? This is a question that had long puzzled people who study fish. The answer turned out to be a combination of wind and storm.
When it is spring in the northern part of the world, it is fall in Australia. Throughout the autumn season, terrible storms arise and rains flood the land. The strong winds sweep over Australia like huge vacuum cleaners (吸尘器), collecting seaweed, pieces of wood, and even schools of fish. Strong winds may carry these bits of nature for many miles before vacuum dropping them on fields, houses, and astonished people.
Although they seem unusual, fish-falls occur frequently in Australia. When Bill Tapp was asked to describe the scene of fish, he remarked, “They look like millions of dead birds falling down.” His statement is not surprising. The wonders of the natural world are as common as rain. Nature, with its infinite wonders, can create waterfalls that flow upward and fish that fall out of the sky.
56. What is this passage about?
A. A sad story. B. Australia’s northern part.
C. A rain of fish. D. The damage done by floods.

The girls in this sixth grade class in East Palo Alto, California, all have the same access to computers as boys. But researchers say, by the time they get to high school, they are victims (受害者) of what the researchers call a major new gender (性别) gap in technology. Janice Weinman of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) says, “Girls tend to be less comfortable than boys with the computer. They use it more for word processing rather than for problem solving, rather than to discover new ways in which to understand information.
After re-examining a thousand studies, the AAUW researchers found that girls make up only a small percentage of students in computer science classes. Girls rate themselves significantly lower than boys in their ability and confidence in using computers. And they use computers less often than boys outside the classroom.
An instructor of a computer lab says he’s already noticed some difference. Charles Cheadle of Cesar Chavez School says, “Boys are not so afraid they might do something that will harm the computer, whereas girls are afraid they might break it somehow.”
Six years ago, the software company Purple Moon noticed that girls’ computer usage was falling behind boys. Karen Gould with the company says, “The number one reason girls told us they don’t like computer games is not that they’re too violent, or too competitive. Girls just said they’re unbelievably boring.” What girls want, Purple Moon found, is characters they can relate to and story lines relative to what’s going on in their own lives. “What we definitely found from girls is (that there is no intrinsic) (内在的) reason why they wouldn’t want to play on a computer; it was just a content thing,” says Karen Gould.
The sponsor of the study says it all boils down to this: the technology gender gap that separates the girls from the boys must be closed if women are to compete effectively with men in the 21st century.
59. According to the passage, girls are victims of the gender gap in technology because _____________.
A. they can not discover new ways to use computers

A. if girls had an equal chance to play games, they would like computers
B. if the software content was changed, girls would be more interested
C. if the software was more violent, girls would like it better
D. if the characters were funny, girls would like them better
63. The gender gap needs to be closed because ____________.
A. it isn't fair that boys are allowed to use computers all the time
B. there isn't enough money for updating computer system
C. most of the causes may boil down to a question of money
D. the ability to use computers is important in today’s world

Allison Sheridan had always been schooled (教育) at home. But recently she made a big decision --- she wanted to go to a public high school. That meant facing a lot of new experiences --- classmates, teachers, tests and especially homework. “I didn’t have homework when I was home-schooled,” Allison said. “You just worked until you were finished with whatever you had to do on a certain day.” Allison, now a junior at Summit Preparatory Charter High School in Redwood City, California, was among the many students who get their education somewhere other than a traditional school setting (环境).
When she was home-schooled, Allison studied English, history, math and French under the guidance of her mother. But now she has a desire (期望) for a different social atmosphere (氛围) as well as to prepare for college. “I wanted to experience school before college. It probably wouldn’t be a good idea for me to be home-schooled through high school and then go to college all alone,” Allison said.
Courtney Wallace, a sophomore (二年级) at Homestead High School in Cupertino, Calif. was also home-schooled through eighth grade. Besides taking art and science classes, as Allison did, Courtney practiced gymnastics at Sunnyvale Gymnastics Club, swam at Sunnyvale Swim Club, played the flute (长笛) in a band of home-schoolers and took ballet classes at the Pacific Ballet Academy in Mountain View, California. Like Allison, Courtney also decided to attend a public high school. “I had just always wanted to know what school was like,” Courtney said, “so I decided to go to high school and find out.” High school has been mostly what she expected, Wallace said, although she did have to make adjustments (适应). “I was a little afraid of taking tests and getting a lot of homework. I got used to taking tests, and I didn’t get as much homework as I was afraid I would,” Wallace said. Wallace also said her high school experience has been fun because of the people she met. She said her friends did not find it unusual that she was home-schooled. Instead, “they just wanted to know what it was like.”
64. Which of the following is NOT true about Allison’s home-schooling?
A. She didn’t have any homework.
B. She was taught and guided by her mother.
C. There’s no chance for her to make friends.
D. She studied subjects including English.
65. What can be learned from the passage about home-schooling?
A. Fewer subjects are taught at home than at high school.
B. Quite a few students are home-schooled.
C. Students don’t like to be home-schooled.
D. Home-schooled students can’t adjust to high school life.
66. Why did Allison want to attend a public high school?
A. Because she was curious about school life.
B. Because she was tired of being educated at home.
C. Because she wanted to take more subjects.
D. Because she wanted to meet more friends before going to college.
67. Wallace took all the following classes EXCEPT___________.
A. art B. gymnastics C. ballet D. computers
D
Much attention is presently being given to what is termed “functional illiteracy (文盲)”. This should not be confused with the problem of illiteracy, that is, the inability to read and write. Current United Nations (UNESCO) figures indicate that 99 per cent of all Americans are literate, the same figure assigned to nations such as Britain and Germany. Functional illiteracy, by contrast, is concerned with how much difficulty people have in actually using and writing skills in everyday situations. This might be interpreted (解释), for example, as the relative ability to understand federal income tax forms, or printed instructions, or how well someone can write a letter of complaint, or apply in writing for a job.
There are no agreed-upon definitions (定义) of what functional illiteracy is and, in practice, definitions vary widely. For many years, reading tests have been used throughout the country which define reading ability by grade level. “Tenth grade reading level” for instance, would be the average reading score of all pupils who have completed ten years of school. There are, of course, many different reading tests and types of tests. One definition of functional illiteracy holds that anyone is “illiterate” who reads at less than an eighth grade level. Another common definition uses a twelfth grade level (the last year of high school in the US).
There seems to be general agreement that at least one tenth of all Americans are functionally illiterate in English to some degree. It is also hardly surprising that those nations which (like the US) have paid most attention to this concept, and which have nationwide testing, have found the greatest problems. As one educator humourously put it, “Reading tests cause illiteracy”. Canada, for example, which also has a large non-English-speaking immigrant population, has recently found that many of her citizens, too, are functionally illiterate. The attention given to this problem, therefore, reflects the fact that in North America schools as well as pupils are continually tested.
68. What can we infer from the story?
A. Anyone who is functionally illiterate must also be illiterate.
B. Anyone who is illiterate must also be functionally illiterate.
C. definitions of functional illiteracy are different from country to country.
D. only countries that have a large number of immigrants are troubled by this
problem.
69. By quoting the educator’s humourous saying (the underlined sentence), the writer points out ___________.
A. reading tests are never a good way to grade one’s ability
B. the irony (讽刺意味) in using reading tests to define functional illiteracy
C. only by taking reading tests can we know who is illiterate
D. definition of functional illiteracy should be clearer than the current one
70. The writer is probably ______________.
A. a United Nations officer B. an English teacher
C. an American D. an illiterate
71. Which of the following statements would the writer probably agree with?
A. All countries should have the same definition for functional illiteracy.
B. It's completely unnecessary to pay attention to functional illiteracy.
C. The problem of illiteracy should be given more attention than functional illiteracy.
D. Tests can be misleading in defining functional illiteracy.

A “blogger” is a person who writes on an Internet computer website called a “blog”. The word “blog” is a short way of saying Web log, or personal website. Anyone can start a blog, and they can write about anything they like.
There are millions of blogs on the Internet today. They provide news, information and ideas to many people who read them. They contain links to other websites. And they provide a place for people to write their ideas and react to the ideas of others.
A research company called Perseus has studied more than 3,000 Web logs. It says that blogs are most popular with teenage girls. They use them to let their friends know what is happening in their lives. The study also says that more than 100,000 bloggers stopped taking part in the activity after a year.
However, some people develop serious blogs to present political and other ideas. For example, the Republican and Democratic parties in the southern state of Kentucky, US, recently started their own blogs. And American companies are beginning to use blogs to advertise their products.
At the same time, some long-standing blogs have ended. Last week, blogging leader Dave Winer closed his free blog service, weblogs.com. He says the site became too costly to continue. He started the blog four years ago, and thousands of people had written on it. They are now upset because they did not know that the site was closing.
One blog that is still going strong is called Rebecca’s Pocket. Rebecca Blood created the website in 1999. She wrote about the history of blogs on the site. That article led to a book called “The Weblog Handbook”. It has been translated into four languages so far.
Ms Blood says Rebecca’s Pocket gets about 30,000 visitors a month. She writes about anything and everything --- politics, culture and movies. She recently provided medical advice. And she wrote about how to prevent people from stealing money from on-line bank accounts.
72. The text is mainly written to __________.
A. explain why “blogs” are popular B. introduce some famous bloggers
C. tell us about blogs D. tell us how to write blogs
73. From the text we can learn that blogs cover almost everything except _____________.
A. different ideas B. medical advice
C. advertisements D. account passwords
74. Which statement is NOT true according to the text?
A. Politicians don’t use blogs at all.
B. A lot of bloggers give up writing after a while.
C. Those who like to use blogs are mostly teenage girls.
D. Dave Winer closed his website due to money issues.
75. The reason why Rebecca’s Pocket is still going strong is that _____________.
A. it is about anything and everything
B. it is about the history of blogs
C. it provides information
D. it has editions in at least four different languages

W: If I were you, I would change the beginning. You should write about your education first because we like to judge a man by his abilities.
M: Good idea, Betty. What do you think about the second part?
W: I think it’s too short. You’d better say something about your work experience.
M: You’re right. I’ll change it. How about the last part?
W: Very good. But you should talk about your family, too.
M: I agree. I appreciate your helping me.

M: Can you bring me the bill, please?
W: Certainly, sir.
M: Oh, I think there has been a mistake.
W: I’m sorry, sir. What seems to be the trouble?
M: I think you have charged me twice for the same thing. Look, the figure of 5.50
appears here and then again here.
W: I’ll just go and check it for you, sir.(returns a few minutes later)Yes, sir, you are
quite right. The clerk made a mistake. I think you will find it correct now.
M: Thank you.
W: We do apologize about this, sir.
M: That’s all right.

M: Did anybody phone me while I was out?
W: Nobody phoned, but…er.. . Mr. Powell came.
M: What? But he’s the man I wanted to talk with as soon as possible. I told you all about that before I left.
W: Yes, but…
M: I even gave you a card with the name and phone number of the restaurant!
W: But that’s just it!You didn’t give me the card.
M: What do you mean?Of course I did. I took the card out of my wallet just before I left. Look!It isn’t in my wallet now!
W: Mr. Smith, what’s that card on the floor? It fell out of your wallet a second ago.
M: That card?It’s…er.. . it’s the card I thought I gave you.
W: You see!You forgot!That’s why I didn’t phone.
M: I’m very sorry. It wasn’t your fault. I apologize.
W: That’s all right. Please forget it.

M: Hi, what are you doing?
W: I’m cleaning the house.
M: Can you go to the movies with me this afternoon?
W: I don’t think so. Right now I’m sweeping the floor. Then I have to wash the floors and wash and iron all the clothes.
M: Aren’t your sister and your mother helping you?
W: No, they usually help, but today my sister is playing tennis and my mother’s writing.
M: That’s too bad. Asian Sun is playing at the theatre. They say it’s good. And I want to go to that new Chinese restaurant.
W: Well, you could come over later this afternoon and watch TV with me.
M: I have a good idea. Why don’t I come over and help you with your work?
W: Would you?
M: Sure. Why not? It’ll be over in half an hour.
Text 10
M: Someone came late last night looking for you. I told him you were out and suggested that he leave a note, but he didin’t.
W: Late last night? That’s strange. What did he look like?
M: He seemed to be about thirty-five or somewhat older. Maybe forty or so.
W: Was he tall or short?
M: Mmm…He wasn’t very tall nor short. About average height, I think.
W: Was he fat or thin?
M: A bit on the thin side, if I remember correctly. Anyway, certainly not fat, but then he wasn’t very thin either.
W: Was there anything unusual about his looks? What kind of face did he have ---round or square or long?
M: Let me think…It was rather square, but not so very. Or was it?Really, I didn’t notice. It was so late and the lighting wasn’t good.
W: Was he wearing glasses?
M: Was he or wasn’t he?I’m not sure now. You see. I was so tired and sleepy that I didn’t pay much attention.
