US Still Leads the way as Global Economy Grows
The world economy is expected to grow by 3.7 per cent this year, as compared to last year’s 2.6 percent. This forecast is made by UN’s Economics and Social Affaires department and the University of Toronto in Canada.
The US is still the main contributor to growth, but with notable(显著的) backup from China, India and Russia.
The report said the strong pace of recovery that started in the second half of 2003 would continue for the first half of the year, but will slow down in the second half. By year 2005, economic growth is forecast to fall slightly to 3.4 per cent.
The survey(调查) forecast that the US economy will grow 4.7 per cent this year, up from 3.1 percent last year. China’s economy should expand by 8.5 percent, Russia’s by 7.8 per cent and India’s by 6.3 percent.
Nobel Economics Laureate Lawrence Klein, who heads the group that produced the report, said that “ in spite of a very turbulent(动荡的) political, military, diplomatic and economic situation, things are looking a little better for the near-term.”
The US has contributed about 30 to 40 percent of world economic growth in the past few years. But Klein said that this has been powered by resources borrowed from the rest of the world.
Looking at the global economy, he said there were more new centers of economic activity appearing. These included China, India, and Russia. “It is better to for the world economic situation to have many leaders rather than one or two,” Klein added.
After years of underperformance, Japan can expect economic growth of 3.1 percent this year. But this is likely to drop to 2 percent in 2005.
One area falling behind is Europe, where economic growth this year is forecast at just 1.9 percent in the European Union and 1.6 percent elsewhere. University of Toronto economist Peter Pauly said this was a result of slower structural reforms in Europe. Differences between economies using the euro are also factors.
According to the survey, which country has the highest economic growth in 2004?
A. Russia. B. Japan. C. USA. D. China.
57. The underlined word “backup” in the second paragraph probably means ___.
something that is followed
B. a copy of a file in a computer
C. something that is the first
D. something that can be taken as a choice
From the last paragraph we can see ___
A. Europe has always been falling behind in the global economic growth for many years.
B. Notable economic growth can be seen in all the other areas except Europe
C. There has been great success in structural reforms in Europe recently
D. There may be a disorder in the currency in some European countries
Which of the following is NOT true according to the survey?
A. As a whole, the global economy is going well through the international situation is not very steady.
B. There is a continuous rise in Japan’s economic growth before 2005.
C. Countries like China, Russia and India are especially successful in developing their economies at present.
The US is still playing a leading part in the global economic growth.

It seems that some people go out of their way to get into trouble. That's more or less what happened the night that Nashville Police Officer Floyd Hyde was on duty.
“I was on the way to a personal-injury accident in West Nashville. As I got Highway 40, blue lights and sirens(警笛) going. I fell in behind a gold Pontiac Firebird that suddenly seemed to take off quickly down the highway. The driver somehow panicked at the sight of me. He was going more than a hundred miles an hour and began passing cars on the shoulder.”
But Hyde couldn't go after him. Taking care of injured people is always more important than worrying about speeds, so the officer had to stay on his way to the accident. But he did try to keep the Firebird in sight as he drove, hoping another nearby unit would be able to step in and stop the speeding car. As it turned out, keeping the Firebird in sight was not that difficult. Every turn the Pontiac made was the very turn the officer needed to get to the accident scene.
Hyde followed the Pontiac all the way to his destination(目的地)。At that point he found another unit had already arrived at the accident scene. His help wasn't needed. Now he was free to try to stop the driver of the Firebird, who by this time had developed something new to panic about.
“Just about that time,” Hyde says,“I saw fire coming out from under that car, with blue smoke and oil going everywhere. He'd blown his engine. Now he had to stop.”
“After I arrested him, I asked him why he was running. He told me he didn't have a driver's license(执照)。”
That accident cost the driver of the Firebird plenty-a thousand dollars for the new engine-not to mention the charges for driving without a license, attempting to run away, and dangerous driving.
64. The meaning of “panicked” in Paragraph 2 is related to .
A. shame B. hate C. anger D. fear

Because he realize he had to hurry to the accident scene.
Because he thought the police officer wanted to stop him.
Because he wanted to overtake cars on the shoulder.

Someone else was taking care of the injured person.
The Pontiac reached its destination at the accident scene.
Hyde knew where he was going by following the tright xcar.
The policeman was running after a speeder on Highway 40

took a wrong turn on the way
had some trouble with his car
was stopped by the police offer
paid for the expenses of the accident

There is an English saying: Laughter is best medicine. Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now, however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found that laughter really can improve people’s health.
Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their heart, blood pressure, breathing And muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, the heart beating and breathing, it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.
Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body.
In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups students who listened to different radio programmes. The group that tolerated(忍耐)the pain for the longest time was the groups which listened to a funny programme .The reason why laughter can reduced pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemicals in the brain which diminish both stress and pain.
As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics, in which they help to improve their patients’ condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter.

Dear Jim,
How times flies! It is a week since I received your letter. How nice to hear from you again! Now let me tell you something about the beautiful work on Beijing for the 2008 Olympic Games. Our slogan is “Green Olympics”.12.2 billion dollars will be spent on this project. A lot of trees, flowers and grass will be planted in many places to make Beijing more beautiful. We will use clean energy and try our best to make waste water clean and reuse it. In 2008 when you come to Beijing, you will see Beijing as beautiful as a garden, with cleaner water and a cleaner sky.
I look forward to meeting you in Beijing in 2008.
