A
At one time, people used to travel to foreign countries because they thought they would be different from home-the building, the food, the national dress. Nowadays, however, one large city is very like another. They all have their Hihon or Sheraton Hotels which look like Hilton or Sheraton Hotels everywhere. They all have their McDonald's, their KFCs, their Pizza Huts. Office buildings look the same everywhere, and most city centers are full of office buildings. And, of course, people are driving the same brands of Japanese or European cars, usually wearing the same kinds of clothing and watching---except for a few programs--the same American movies and TV shows. Airports are the same everywhere and the world's airlines are all flying the same aircraft, Boeings or Airbuses.
What, therefore, is the purpose of foreign travel for people who are not on business? What do tourists hope to experience in a foreign country that they cannot experience at home? Why travel to foreign countries at all? The answer could be that people are very interested in the past. It is a nation's history
that is its main attraction. Most of today's tourists travel overseas to find out what foreign countries and cultures used to be like, not what they are like today. The words "eultural tourism" are now part of the language of tourism, and it is the museums and works of art in many countries that are their main attractions.
If they are lucky--and have had sensible, strong governments--many countries "also usually have at least a few beautiful places for tourists to visit.
Finally there is perhaps a nation's greatest attraction: its people. A nation is not just its historical buildings, its works of art or beautiful places, it is also the people who live in it. This is why a country sueh as Thailand attracts millions of people every year. They come mainly- because of the friendliness of
the Thai people, it is why the Pacific Islands are also so popular. There may not be mueh to see or do in Fiji, but there are lots of friendly, smiling people to make visitors feel welcome.
36.The passage is mainly about
A. the importance of tourism B. different foreign eultures

37.The writer thinks that large cities in foreign countries

A device that stops drivers from falling asleep at the wheel is about to undergo testing at Department of Transport laboratories and could go on sale within 12 months.
The system, called Driver Alert, aims to reduce deadly road accidents by 20%--40% that are caused by tiredness. Airline pilots can also use it to reduce the 30% of all pilot-error accidents that are related to fatigue.
Driver Alert is based on a computerized wristband. The device, worn by drivers pilots, gives out a sound about every four minutes during a car joumey. After each sound the driver must respond by squeezing the steering wheel(方向盘). A sensor in the wristband detects this pressing action and measures the time between the sound and the driver's response.
Tiredness is directly related to a driver's response time. Usually, a watchful driver would take about 400 milliseconds to respond, hut once that falls to more than 500 milliseconds, it suggests that the driver is getting sleepy.
In such cases the device gives out more regular and louder sounds, showing that the driver should open a window or stop for a rest. If the driver's response continues to slow down, the sounds become mote frequent until a nonstop alma warns that the driver must stop as soon as possible.
The device has been delivered to the department's laboratories for testing. If these tests, scheduled for six months' time, are successful, the makers will bring the product to market within about a year.

It was a warm April day when a big fat envelope cane in the mail from the only college I had ever imagined attending. I tore open the packet. My eyes were fixed on the word "congratulations." I don't remember ever smiling so wide.
Then I looked at my financial(财政的) package.
The cost of Dream School's tuition(学费), room and board was around $40,000--an impossible sum! How could I afford to attend? What good reasons did I have to go there when three other fine colleges were offering me free tuition? My other choices were good, solid schools even if they weren't as famous as my firet choice.
In my mind, attending my dream university would he the only way to realize my dream of becoming a wnrld-elass writer. My parents understood how I felt. They told me that even though it would be a financial problem, I could go wherever I would be happiesl. But as I was always careful with money, I wasn't sure what to do.
One of the schools that offered me a full ride had an informational dinner one night in the spring. Considering my parents' financial difficulties, I decided to drive the 45 minutes and attend. At first, all I had planned to do was smile politely, eat free food, listen quietly. But I surprised myself.
At dinner the president of the university talked about the wonderful activities on campus(校园) ineluding guest lectures and social gatherings. He also made it perfectly clear that free food would be offered at all future events. He continued with explanations of professors, class sizes, activities, and sporting events on campus. As he spoke, I began to realize that this school, though not as good as my first choice, might be the best one for me. It seemed small yet with many great programs. It seemed challenging yet caring.
As the president ended his speech, we clapped politely and pushed back our chairs. As I walked out that door, a feeling of comfort washed over me. Looking at the campus that night, I realized that I would be spending the next four years right there.
In all honesty, my university is not as well-known as my "dream" university. However, it turned out to be the right choice of schools for me.

How Long Can People Live?
She took up skating at age 85, made her first movie appearance at age 114, and held a Concert in the neighborhood on her 121 st birthday.
When it comes to long life, Jeanne Calment is the world's record holder. She lived to the ripe old age of 122. So is 122 the upper limit to the human life span (寿命) ? If scientists come up with some sort of pill or diet that would slow aging, could we possibly make it to 150--or beyond?
Researchers don't entirely agree on the answers. "Calment lived to 122, so it wouldn't surprise me if someone alive today reaches 130 or 135, "says Jerry Shay at the University of Texas.
Steve Austad at the University of Texas agrees. "People can live much longer than we think, " he says. "ExpertS used to say that humans couldn't live past 110. When Calment blew past that age, they raised the number to 120. So why can't we go higher?"
The trouble with guessing how old people can live to be is that it's all just guessing. "Anyone can make up a number,," says Rieh Miller at the University of Michigan. "Usually the scientist who picks the highest number gets his name in Time magazine."
Won’t new anti-aging techniques keep us alive for centuries? Any cure, says Miller, for aging would probably keep most of us kicking until about 120. Researchers are working On treatments that lengthen the life span of mice by 50 percent at most. So, if the average human life Span is about 80 years, says
Miller, "adding another 50 percent would get you to 120."
So what can we conclude from this little disagreement among the researchers? That life, span is flexible(有弹性的), but there is a limit, says George Martin of the University of Washington. "We can get flies to live 50 percent longer," he says. "But a fly's never going to live 150 years. Of course, if you became a new species (物种), one that ages at a slower speed, that would be a different story," he adds.
Does Martin really believe that humans could evolve(进化) their way to longer life? "It's pretty cool to think 'about," he says with a smile.
48.What does the story of Jeanne Calment prove to us?
A. People can live to 122. B. Old people are creative.
C. Women are sporty at 85. D. Women live longer than men.
49.According to Steve Austad at the University of Texas,
A. the average human life span could be 110
B. scientists cannot find ways to slow aging
C. :few people can expect to live to over 150
D. researchers are not sure how long people can live
50.Who would agree that a scientist will become famous if he makes the wildest guess at longevity?
A. Jerry Shay. B. Steve Austad.
C. Rich Miller. D. George Martin.
51.What can we infer fi'om the last three paragraphs?
A. Most of us could be good at sports even at 120.
B. The average human life span carmot be doubled.
C. Scientists believe mice are aging at a slower speed than before.
D. New techniques could be used to change flies into a new species.

Eating enough fruits and vegetables is what most people associate with good health habits. But just as important to healthy living are frequent doses(剂量) of laughter and humor--both proven to have a direct effect on health.
According to Wendy Shepard, clinical nurse specialist at Hopkins Bayview in Community Psychiatry's Creative Alternatives Program, laughter has definite physiological effects on the body. Laughing is like inside jogging(慢跑), she says. It cleans the respiratory(呼吸的)system, stimulates the digestive tract, increases heart rate and blood cireulation(循环), lowers blood pressure, reduces muscletension and increases the release of endorphins, the body's natural pain-killers.
Unfortunately, many people don't use humor enough when dealing with everyday life situations. Many wait for humor to happen to them instead of making it happen. "Humor is more than just laughing at a joke. It can become a way of life if you open yourself up to a new attitude," says Shepard. "The greatest thing about play, creativity and laughter--all components(成分) of humor---is that you not only
help yourself, you help others. Humor is contagious(易感染他人的)!"
Shepard suggests that everyone relax and lighten up. It can be as easy as focusing on fun things to pick up at a dollar store. Shepard often travels with a grab bag of things to help make people smile. Of course, making humor a part of your life 365 days a year doesn't mean you have to carry a grab bag, put on a clown nose or tell jokes--although those things are fun in the right situation. Instead, look for ways to make the things you already do more fun, such as laughing with co-workers and smiling at people you don't know.
Says Shepard, "Some people need help in the funny-bone department. That's why it's good to practice having fun." Things you can do to practice include putting together humor collections, making joy lists and creating joy boxes. A joy box may include a collection of whatever makes you happy—letters from loved ones, a child's drawing, a favorite cartoon, a fun toy, a humorous video--the possibilities are endless. Shepard says she loves to give joy boxes or gags(笑话或滑稽故事) with playful gifts. She says that these gifts lift the spirits of even the most serious of people.
"Keeping in mind that not all prescriptions(处方 ) involve drugs, there is a prescription you can give a loved one, friend or colleague," says Shepard. "The healing power of laughter, play and humor is great. Besides, you can never overdose on it. It truly is the best medicine."

I needed to get some money so,after Christmas,I took a job in the clothes department at Graham’s for the first fortnight of the January sale.I can’t say that I enjoyed it,but it was atl experience I'll never forget.
I could never understand why there were so many filings in the sales;where did they all come from? Now I know the secret[Firstly, there is the special winter stock(货物)and the stock that people buy all the year round;some of these things ate slightly reduced.Seeondly, there are the summer clothes they couldn't sell last year;these are heavily reduced to clear them.Thirdly, there are cheap clothes bought in specially for the sales;these are put out at high prices ten days before the sale begins and then are reduced by 60%in the sale.Clever!Lastly, they buy in“seconds”(clothes not in perfect condition)for the sale and they are sold vmy cheaply.
When I arrived half an hour before opening on the first day of the sale, there was already a queue amund three sides of the building. This made me very nervous.
When the big moment amved to open the doors, the security guards, looking less confident than usual, came up to them, keys in hand. The moment they had unlocked the doors, they hid behind the doors for protection as the noisy crowd charged in.I couldn’t believe my eyes:this wasn’t shopping,it was a battlefield! One poor lady couldn’t keep her feet and was knocked over by people pushing from be
hind.
Clothes were flying in all directions as people searched for the sizes, colours and styles they wanted.
Quarrels broke out. Mothers were using their small children to erawl(爬行) through people's legs and get hold of things they couldn't get near themselves.
Within minutes I had half a dozen people pushing clothes under my nose, each wanting to be the first served. Where had the famous English queue gone? The whole day continued like that, but I kept my temper(脾气) ! I was taking money hand over fist and began to realise why, twice a year, Graham's were happy to turn ttieir expensive store into a battlefield like this.
In the sale fever, people were spending money like water without thinking whether they needed what they were buying. As long as it was a bargain it was OK.
You won't believe this but as soon as I got home I crashed out for four hours. Then I had dinner and went back to bed, fearing the sound of the alarm which would tell me to get ready for the second day of the sale.

In 1901, H. G. Wells, an English writer, wrote a book describing a trip to the moon. When the explorers(探险者) landed on the moon, they discovered that the moon was full of underground cities. They expressed their surprise to the "moon people" they met. In turn, the "moon people" expressed their surprise. "Why," they asked, "are you traveling to outer space when you don't even use your inner space?"
H.G. Wells could only imagine traveling to the moon. In 1969, human beings really did land on the moon. People today know that there are no underground cities on the moon. However, the question that the “moon people” asked is still an interesting one. A growing number of scientists are seriously thinking about it.
Underground systems are already in place. Many cities have underground car parks. In some cities, such as Tokyo, Seoul and Montreal, there are large underground shopping areas. The “Channel”, a tunnel (隧道) connecting England and France, is now completed.
But what about underground cities? Japan's Taisei Corporation is designing a network of underground system, called “Alice Cities”. The designers imagine using surface space for public parks and using underground space for flats, offices, shopping, and so on. A solar dome (太阳能穹顶) would cover the whole city.
Supporters of underground development say that building down rather than building up is a good way to use the earth's space. The surface, they say, can be used for farms, parks, gardens, and wilderness. H.G. Wells' “moon people” would agree. Would yon?

If you are ever lucky to be invited to a formal dinner party in Paris, remember that the French have their own way of doing things, and that even your finest manners may not be “correct” by French custom. For example, if you think showing up promptly at the time given on the invitation, armed with gifts of wine and roses, complimenting your hostess on her cooking, laughing heartily at the host's jokes and then leaping up to help the hostess will make you the perfect guest, think again.
Here Madame Nora Chabal, the marketing director of the Ritz Hotel in Paris, explained how it works.
The first duty of the guest is to respond to the invitation within 48 hours. And, the guest may not ask to bring a guest because the hostess has chosen her own.
Flowers sent in advance are the prefered gift. They may also be sent afterwards with a thank-you note. It is considered a very bad form to arrive with a gift of flowers in hand, there by forcing the hostess to deal with timing a vase when she is too busy to do that. See, that's the logic! The type of flowers sent
has a code of its own, too. One must never send chrysanthemums because they are considered too hLunble a flower for occasion. Carnations are considered bad luck, and calla lilies are too reminiscent(令人联想的) of fnnerals(葬礼). A bouquet of red roses is a declaration of romantic intent. Don't send those nnless you mean it-and never to a married hostess. And though the French love wine, you must never
bring a bottle to a dinner party. Why, it's as if you feared your hosts would not have enough wine on hand, and that's an insult. You may, however, offer a box of chocolates which the hostess will pass after dinner with coffee.
If an invitation is for eight o'clock, the considerate guest arrives at 8: 15. Guests who arrive exactly on time or early are mere thoughtless ones who are not giving the hostess those last few minutes she needs to deal with details and crises. The “correct” guest arrives between 15 to 20 minutes after the hour be-
cause dinner will be served exactly 30 minutes past the time on the invitation.
45.Which of the following statements is right according to the French custom?
A. When you receive an invitation, reply to it within two days. You'd better send flowers in advance.
B. Arrive exactly on time at the dinner party.
C. Bring a bottle of good wine to the dinner party.
D. Telephone to ask if you could bring a good friend to the party.
46.Which of the following is right about sending flowers?

B. If someone is ill in hospital, send carnations.
C. If you are invited to a dinner party, send red roses to the hostess.
D. If you are in love with someone, send red roses.
47.If you are too busy to send flowers in advance, what should you do?
A. Bring a bouquet of flowers when you go to the party.

D. The hostess will never mind if you send flowers or not.

If American customs seem strange, remember that Americans feel the same way when they visit another country, people living in different cultures do many daily things differently from one another. What a dull(not interesting or boring) the world would be if this were not true!
Some differences are small, and one soon becomes used to them. For example, many people find it strange that Americans move from place to place so often. Born in one city, they may attend school in a second, enter business in a third, and perhaps move several times during their lives. Today, most Americans fully expect and accept the fact that they will move frequently.
However, houses are of great interest to Americans. They spend a lot of time thinking, reading and talking about their homes and how to improve them. They also enjoy looking at other people's houses, since they would enjoy visiting and examining a house in another country, they may suppose that you will probably have the same desire when you visit the United States. So do not be surprised when you visit an American family and are shown every room in the house besides the bathroom and kitchen.

The biggest safety threat(威胁) facing airlines today may not be a man with a gun, but the man with the portable computer in business class. In the past 15 years, pilots have reported well over 100 incidents that could have been caused by electromagnetic interference(电磁干扰). The source of this interference remains unclear, but increasingly, experts are pointing the blame at portable electronic devices such as portable computers, radio and mobile telephones.
RTCA, an organization which advises the aviation (航空 ) industry, has suggested that all airlines ban(禁止) such devices fiom being used during “key” stages of flight, partiicularly take-off and landing Some experts have gone further, calling for a total ban during all flights. Nowadays, rules on using these devices are left up to airlines. And although some airlines ban passengers from using such equipment during take-off and landing, most are not willing to exercise a total ban, if many passengers want to work during flights.
The difficulty in understanding how electromagnetic fields might affect an aircraft's computers. Experts know that portable devices give off radiation which affects those wavelengths which aircraft uses for communication. But, because they have not been able to reproduce these effects in a laboratory, they have no way of knowing whether the interference might be dangerous or not.
The fact that aircraft may be in trouble because of the interference raises the danger that some people may use radio systems in order to damage navigation(导航)equipment. As worrying, though,is the pas. senger who can’t hear the instructions to turn off his radio because the music’s too loud.

1. C 2.C 3.D 4.D 5.A 6.C 7.B 8.B
11.C lead to “导致、引起”,to是介词,后接名词或动名词,catch与the thief之间是被动关系,故要用动名词的被动式。
12.D 13.C 14.C 15.B
16.A record。
20.A treat sb.
23.B make a short speech是作一场简短的演讲,从short可知没必要write,而对奖学金的高要求又不会让他们去read,更不会是show。
as for表示“至于”。
27. D 由句中的on可确定spending,afford sth.to sb.,pay money for sth.,sth.cost sb.Money.

从第一段第二句中“When the explorers landed on the moon, they discovered that the moon was full of underground cities.”能够间接得出“moon people lived in SO many underground cities”故选项C正确。

49.C 50.A 51.B 52.D
53.C 第一段第2行:“In the past 15 year,...over 100 incidents that could have been caused by electromagnetic interference.”
