How far Chinese scientists will advance in deep space is not immediately known. But one thing is certain: They will conduct exploration of Mars besides the ongoing lunar mission.
"In the coming five years, China will, on the basis of its moon probes, plan deep-space exploration, focusing on lunar and Martian exploration," Sun Laiyan, chief of the China National Space Administration, said yesterday.
Sun's remarks at the 36th Scientific Assembly of Committee on Space Research held in 2006 in Beijing appeared to be the first time a Chinese official has announced that the nation's space programme would include Martian probes. Long Lehao, a senior space scientist with the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said yesterday that Chinese rockets were capable of sending a satellite to orbit any planet, including Mars. "If the government makes up its mind to start the mission to Mars now, I think we could send an orbiter to Mars in three to five years," he also told China Daily.
By comparison, Chang'e 1, a probe that weighs 2.3 tons, will be launched next year to circle the moon for 12 months. Following the launch of Chang'e 1 next year, China plans to send a vehicle to soft-land on the moon and cruise(巡航) around its surface around 2012.

The story of how the song "Happy Birthday to You" came to be, began as a sweet one, that later soured. Two sisters, Mildred Hill, a teacher at the Louisville, Kentucky Experimental Kindergarten, and Dr. Patty Hill, the principal of the same school, together wrote a song for the children, entitled "Good Morning to All". When Mildred combined her musical talents, as the resident expert on spiritual songs, and as the organist for her church, with her sister's expertise in the area of Kindergarten Education, "Good Morning to All" was sure to be a success.
The sisters published the song in a collection entitled "Song Stories of the Kindergarten" in 1893. Thirty-one years later, after Dr. Patty Hill became head of the Department of Kindergarten Education at Columbia University's Teacher College, a gentleman by the name of Robert H. Coleman published the song, without the sisters' permission. To add insult to injury, he added a second verse, the familiar "Happy Birthday to You" .
Mr. Coleman's addition of the second verse popularized the song and, eventually, the sisters' original first verse disappeared. "Happy Birthday to You," the one and only birthday song, had altogether replaced the sisters' original title, "Good Morning to All."
After Mildred died in 1916, Patty, together with a third sister named Jessica, sprang into action and took Mr. Coleman to court. In court, they proved that they, indeed, owned the melody. Because the family legally owns the song, it is entitled to royalties from it, whenever it is sung for commercial purposes.

What is time Is it a thing to be saved or spent or wasted, like money Or is it something we have no control over, like the weather Is time the same all over the world That's an easy question, you say. Wherever you go, a minute is 60 seconds, an hour is 60 minutes, a day is 24 hours, and so forth. Well, maybe. But in America, time is more than that. Americans see time as a valuable resource. Maybe that's why they are fond of the expression, "Time is money."
To Americans, punctuality is a way of showing respect for other people's time. Being more than 10 minutes late to an appointment usually calls for an apology, and maybe an explanation. People who are running late often call ahead to let others know of the delay. Of course, the less formal the situation is, the less important it is to be exactly on time. At informal get-togethers, for example, people often arrive as much as 30 minutes past the appointed time. But they usually don't try that at work.
American lifestyles show how much people respect the time of others. When people plan an event, they often set the time days or weeks in advance. Once the time is fixed, it takes almost an emergency to change it. If people want to come to your house for a friendly visit, they will usually call first to make sure it is convenient. Only very close friends will just “drop by” unannounced. Also, people hesitate to call others late at night for fear they might be in bed. The time may vary, but most folks think twice about calling after 10:00 p.m.
51. Why are the Americans fond of the expression “Time is Money.”
A. Because they can’t control time.
B. Because time is the same all over the world.
C. Because they consider time as a thing like money.
D. Because they consider time as a valuable resource.
52. In America, if you are more than 10 minutes late to an appointment, _______________.
A. it doesn’t matter
B. it is necessary for you to make an apology
C. you needn’t say anything about your delay
D. you needn’t call ahead to let others know you will be late
53. What does the last paragraph mainly discuss
A. The reasons why the Americans value time.
B. The ways to show their respect to the time of others.
C. Being on time is highly valued in the USA.
D. Never drop in on others unless you are their close friends.
54. We can infer that ___________.
A. you mustn’t be on time when you attend an informal get-together
B. you can’t change the time of an appointment once you fix it
C. Americans never call up others after 10 p.m.
D. Americans think highly of punctuality at work
55. The main idea of the passage is_______.
A. that Americans value punctuality B. that in the USA time is limited and valuable
C. the Americans’ attitude towards time D. the Americans’ control over time

Many people who work in London prefer to live outside it, and to go to their offices or schools every day by train, car or bus, even though this means they have to get up early in the morning and reach home late in the evening.
One advantage of living outside London is that houses are cheaper. Even a small flat in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the country with a garden of one’s own.
Then, in the country one can rest from the noise and hurry of the town. Even though one has to get up earlier and spend more time on trains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends and on summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the country. If one likes gardens, one can spend one’s free time digging, planting, watering and doing the hundred and one other jobs which are needed in a garden. Then, when the flowers and vegetables come up, one has the reward of one who has shared the secret of nature.
Some people, however, take no interest in country things: for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinemas and theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets, dance-halls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live outside London. An occasional walk in one of the parks and a fortnight’s visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want: the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night.
36. Which of the following statements is NOT true

C. Because of certain disadvantages of living outside London, some people who work in London prefer to live inside London.

A. getting a small flat with a garden
B. having a small flat with a garden
C. renting a small flat without a garden
D. buying a small flat without a garden
38. When the flowers and vegetables in the garden come up, those _______ have the reward of one who has shared the secret of nature.

Americans think that travel is good for you, some even think it can help one of the country’s worst problems—crime. Crime worries a lot of people. Every year, the number of crimes goes up and up. And many criminals are young. They often come from sad homes with only one parent or no parents at all.
There are many young criminals in prison. But prison doesn’t change them. Six or seven in ten will go back to crime when they come out of prison. One man, Bob Burton, thought of a new idea. In the old days, young men had to live a difficult life on the road. They learned to be strong and brave, and to help their friends in time of danger. This helped them to grow into men. So Bob Burton started “Vision Quest”. He takes young criminals on a long, long journey with horses and wagons, 3, 000 miles through seven states. They are on the road for more than a year.
The young people on “Vision Quest” all have had problems. Most of them have already spent time in prison. This is their last chance. It’s hard work on the road. Want a glance of the future of health care Take a look at the way the various networks of people about patient care are being connected to one another, and how this new connectivity is being exploited to deliver medicine to the patient—no matter where he or she may be.
Online doctors offering advice based on normal symptoms (症状) are the most obvious example. Increasingly, however, remote diagnosis (远程诊断) will be based on real physiological data from the actual patient. A group from the University of Kentucky has shown that by using personal data assistance plus a mobile phone, it is perfectly practical to send a patient’s important signs over the telephone. With this kind of equipment, the cry asking whether there was a doctor in the house could well be a thing of the past.
Other medical technology groups are working on applying telemedicine to rural care. And at least one team wants to use telemedicine as a tool for disaster need—especially after earthquakes. On the whole, the trend is towards providing global access to medical data and experts’opinions.
But there is one problem. Bandwidth (宽带) is the limiting factor for sending complex medical pictures around the world—CT photos being one of the biggest bandwidth munication satellites may be able to deal with the short-term needs during disasters such as earthquakes or wars. But medicine is looking towards both the second-generation Internet and third-generation mobile phones for the future of remote medical service.
Doctors have met to discuss computer-based tools for medical diagnosis, training and telemedicine. With the falling price of broadband communications, the new technologies should start a new time when telemedicine and the sharing of medical information, experts’opinions and diagnosis are common.
44. The writer chiefly talks about _______.
A. the use of telemedicine
B. the on-lined doctors
C. medical care and treatment
D. communication improvement
45. The basis of remote diagnosis will be _______.
A. personal data assistance
B. some words of a patient
C. real physiological information
D. medical pictures from the Internet
46. Which of the following statements is TURE according to the passage?
A. Patients don’t need doctors in hospitals any more.
B. It is impossible to send a patient’s signs over the telephone.
C. Many teams use telemedicine dealing with disasters now.
D. Broadband communications will become cheaper in the future.
47. The underlined word “problem” in Paragraph 4 refers to the fact that _______.
A. bandwidth isn’t big enough to send complex medical pictures
B. the second-generation of Internet has not become popular yet
C. communication satellites can only deal with short-term needs
D. there is not enough equipment for spreading the medical care

If there is one thing I’m sure about, it is that in a hundred years from now we will still be reading newspapers. It is not that newspapers are a necessity. Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people reading a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation.
The nature of what is news may change. What basically makes news is what affects our lives—the big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same. I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It’s already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetic engineering. In the future, I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do—as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are.
It’s quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted electronically from Fleet Street and printed out in our own home. In fact, I’m pretty sure how it will happen in the future. You will probably be able to choose from a menu, making up your own newspaper by picking out the things you want to read —sports and international news, etc.
I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition between the different media. They actually feed off each other. Some people once foresaw that television would kill off newspapers, but that hasn’t happened. What is read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures on a screen or sound lost in the air. And as for the Internet, it’s never really pleasant to read something just on a screen.
48. What is the best title for the passage
A. The Best Way to Get News
B. The Changes of Media
C. Make Your Own Newspaper
D. The Future of Newspapers
49. In the writer’s opinion, in the future, _______.
A. more big political affairs, wars and disasters will make news
B. newspapers will not be printed in publishing houses any longer
C. newspapers will cover more scientific research
D. more and more people will watch TV
50. What will probably be on in the newspaper made by yourself
A. Sports and international news.
B. A menu of important news.
C. The most important news.
D. What you are interested in.
51. The underlines phrase “feed off” in the last paragraph means _______.
A. depend on B. compete with
C. fight with D. kill off

When I asked my daughter which item she would keep: the phone, the car, the cooker, the computer, the TV, or her boyfriend, she said the phone. Personally, I could do without the phone entirely, which makes me unusual because the telephone is changing our lives more than any other piece of technology.
Point 1: The telephone creates the need to communicate, in the same way that more roads create more traffic. My daughter comes home from school at 4∶00 pm and then spends an hour on the phone talking to the very people she has been at school with all day. If the phone did not exist, would she have anything to talk about
Point 2: The mobile phone means that we are never alone. “The mobile saved my life,” says Crystal Johnstone. She had an accident in her Volvo on the A45 between Otley and Skipton. Trapped inside, she managed to make the call that brought the ambulance to her rescue.
Point 3: The mobile removes our secret. It allows Marketing Manager of Haba Deutsch, Carl Nicolaisen, to ring his sales staff all round the world at any time of day to ask where they are, where they are going, and how their last meeting went.
Point 4: The telephone separates us. Antonella Bramante in Rome says,“We worked in separate offices but I could see him through the window. It was easy to get his number. We were so near—but we didn’t meet for the first two weeks !”
Point 5: The telephone allows us to reach out beyond our own lives. Today we can talk to several complete strangers simultaneously on chat lines (at least my daughter does. I wouldn’t know what to talk about). We can talk across the world. We can even talk to astronauts (if you know any) while they’re space walking. And, with the phone line hooked up to the computer, we can access the Internet, the biggest library on earth.
52. How do you understand “Point l: The telephone creates the need to communicate...”
A. The telephone creates more listeners.
B. People communicate because of the recreating of the telephone.
C. People communicate more since the telephone has been created.
D. People communicate more because of more traffic.
53. Which of the following best shows people’s attitude towards mobile phones
A. Mobile phones are useful when you have an accident.
B. Mobile phones bring convenience to people.
C. Mobile phones can help people go across the world.
D. Mobile phone number is easy to get.
54. The underlined word “simultaneously” most probably means ________.
A. in a friendly way B. in an easy way
C. at the same time D. through computers
55. Which points do you think support the idea that phones improve people’s life
a. Point 1. b. Point 2. c. Point 3. d. Point 4. e. Point 5.
A. c, d. B. a, e. C. a, c. D. b, e.

Student participation in the classroom is not only accepted but also expected of students in many courses. Some professors base part of the final grade on students’ oral participation. Although there are formal lectures during which students have a passive role (i.e., listening and taking notes), many courses are organized around classroom discussions, students’ questions, and informal lectures. In graduate discussions the professor has a “manager” role and the students make presentations and lead discussions. The students do the actual teaching in these discussions.
A professor’s teaching method is another factor that determines the degree and type of student participation. Some professors prefer to control discussions while others prefer to guide the class without controlling it. Many professors encourage students to question their ideas. Students who object to the professor’s point of view should be prepared to prove their positions.
In the teaching of science and mathematics, the controlling mode of instruction is generally traditional, with teachers presenting formal lectures and students taking notes. However, new educational trends have turned up in the humanities and social sciences in the past twenty years. Students in education, society, and history classes, for example, are often required to solve problems in groups, design projects, make presentations, and examine case studies. Since some college or university courses are “practical” rather than theoretical, they pay more attention to “doing” for themselves.

A. has not changed much in the past twenty years

38. The reason why some professors ask students to make presentations and lead discussions is that ________.
A. these professors are often not well prepared before class
B. these professors want to stress “doing”
C. these professors want to test the students’ abilities
D. these professors are not willing to teach theory
39. Which of the following statements is TRUE ac 鄄cording to the passage

Louis Braille was a blind man and he invented the code for the blind. His code gave windows to the blind. In the year 1812, Louis Braille was a very small boy. He lived in a small town. His father had a small shop. One day, Louis was playing in the shop and picked up a small tool with a very sharp point. Louis fell down and the point of the tool hurt his eyes, and later he became blind in both eyes.
At ten, Louis went to the school for the blind in Paris. One day, on a visit home, he said to his father, “Blind people are very lonely in the world. Only books can free the blind. But there are no books for us to read.”
Since then Louis wanted to make books for the blind. Instead of letters, he wanted to use shapes that were easy to tell apart by touch. Louis tried and tried, but he couldn’t come up with a code that would work.
Later, while teaching at a school for the blind in Paris, Louis heard of a kind of “night writing”, which was a code that a French army captain had made up for sending messages on the battle field. The message was “written” in raised dots and dashes. It was “read” by touch. Louis had been trying to find a code that blind people could read, but he failed again and again. Now he thought the idea of “night writing” might be the answer. He never rested from the time when meaning of “night writing” hit him until five years later. He worked and worked and finally came up with a simple system in which he made six holes in different positions within a small space on a piece of paper. With these six holes, he could make sixty-three different combinations. Each combination meant a letter or a short word. In addition to the letters, he could have punctuation marks and even short words like “the” and “for”. Soon Louis wrote a book using the Braille system.
Louis died in 1852, when he was only 43. But his name lives on. It lives on as the name of the code that he invented and the code is still used by the blind.

The American expression “burning your bridges” means acting in such a way that you destroy any chance of turning back or changing your actions.
You can burn your bridges when you are offered a new job. Suppose, for example, that you decide to take the new job. You tell your old boss about your decision. You also tell him how glad you are to leave. With these words, you have burned your bridges. Your boss will never let you return to your old job.
The expression “burning your bridges” gets its name from warfare. An army that is forced back across a river may decide to burn the bridge after crossing it. In this way, the army prevents its enemy from using the bridge. However, the army also destroys its own chance to come back across the river. Most people who “burn their bridges” today do not belong to the military. But like those armies, they move in a different direction with no chance of coming back.
There is one other bridge expression that all bridge “burners” should not forget. It usually is in the form of a warning, “Don’t cross your bridge until you get to it.” It requires you to seize the right chance to do anything.
49. What’s the best subject the writer talks about in the passage
A. Change your actions when necessary.
B. Advice on how to solve job problems.
C. An American useful expression.
D. A good “burner”, a good worker.
50. “A teacher has burnt his bridges.” means ______.
A. he is dismissed by the schoolmaster
B. he has decided to fire all his pupils he teaches
C. he has surely found a better job in another school
D. he has made his firm decision to leave
51. “Don’t cross your bridge until you get to it” in the last paragraph probably means _______.
A. waiting until the right time comes before you act
B. making a full preparation before you start
C. looking before you leap
D. taking action without hesitation(犹豫)

Take it from Madonna, the self -stated “Material Girl”, money can’t buy happiness. That’s quite a lesson from the 46-year-old pop singer, whose fifth children’s book in the past 18 months “Lotsa de Casha(快乐的真谛)” hit store shelves this week.
“Lotsa was by far the richest man in the country. He had everything that money could buy,” is the opening line of her latest book. “But there was a tiny problem. No matter how much money Lotsa made, he wasn’t happy.” The short book concludes with the moral, “When you learn to share, you will not only find happiness. You will also find a friend.”
Famous as much for her attractive dance anthems(舞曲) “Vogue” and “Ray of Light” as she was some 20 years ago performing “Like a Virgin” on MTV, Madonna said she’s left some of her old antics(古怪的姿态) behind and is all grown up now.
“I’d like to think I’ve been developing and transforming my whole career when I grew up,” she told the reporter in an interview. “The media likes to say it’s just another one of my antics,” she said of her career as an author. “But it’s much more deep and profound than that.”
Madonna the singer is known as a changeable person, from sexy clothes and suggestive songs to Eastern mysticism(神秘主义). Similarly, Madonna the writer has written a series of books which barely resemble each other. A different illustrator was hired for each of the five slim volumes. But they are all an-chored(支持) by the same message. She insists, “Nothing is what it seems.” Her intended audience and some critics might agree.
A book reading at a New York bookstore on Tuesday drew puzzled responses from the group of about 25 kids, who appeared to have difficulty grasping the book’s morals.
“I think she makes the same mistake every celebrity(名人) author makes: They think they can write children’s books,” said Cooper, children’s book editor of Booklist. “Generally it’s just awful, beyond awful,” said Cooper of efforts by celebrities-turned authors.
52. Madonna’s fifth children’s book “Lotsa de Casha” ends up with the words “________”.

B. Her books are easy for children to understand.
C. All the pictures in her books are painted by herself.

54. Which of the following statements is NOT true about Madonna
A. Madonna thinks turning into an author is only another one of her antics.
B. Madonna will no longer perform her old funny actions on the stage.

D. Madonna was a sexy and attractive singer.
55. What is the attitude of Cooper to celebrity authors

Countless items that we take for granted in modern life originated in ancient China, from paper-printing, and silk to gunpowder, kites, mechanized oil wells and sophisticated medical surgery. Nowhere did the Chinese exhibit more skill and ingenuity (聪明才智) than in the creation of tens of thousands of bridges.
In China Bridge, NOVA TV explores the unexpected wealth of China’s bridge heritage. The show’s experiments will focus on an ancient design that baffles engineers and scholars—the Rainbow Bridge. Its blueprint derives from a renowned 12th century Chinese scroll painting that depicts life in the Song Dynasty capital of Kaifeng around 1000 A.D.. It is a panorama (全景画) that is crowded with more than a thousand tiny figures busy with their daily life and involved in weddings, funerals, and war games. At the center of all this activity is the Rainbow Bridge, lined with shops on both sides.
One Song Dynasty historian wrote, “the bridge has no piers, but giant timbers spanning the void (空间), decorated with red paint and curved like a rainbow.” It was a style never attempted in the Western world.
How could such a daring and intricate structure have been built above a river Retired engineer Tang Huancheng may know the answers, who has carefully studied the Rainbow Bridge for nearly fifty years. Now NOVA TV helps him fulfill his long-cherished dream of reconstructing it. With little historical information, Professor Tang is joined by a team of experts who devise a plan for the bridge based on a close analysis of the painting. Working in a lively village in the picturesque (风景如画的) Yellow Mountains of Central China’s Anhui Province, the two teams work from opposing banks, each with a different set of challenges.
This drama forms the climax of one of NOVA TV’s most marvelous shows, which will open a window on the vanished wonders of ancient China.

Kendall Barry, 17, from West Potomac High School in America, finished her tests yesterday. Now she has set aside her textbooks to put final touches on her latest project of the fashion design course: a gown she both designed and sewed. The dress was for tonight’s school fashion show.
“I do really well in academics (学业), but fashion is my favorite. It’s what I want to do with my future,” Barry said. Next years she will attend college and study fashion design. “I like that you get to work with your hands,” Barry was really looking forward to showcasing her design tonight.
To have a good fashion show, there would also be music and special effects, besides designers like Barry. DJs for the show were students in the music technology class. What about the visual special effects flashing on the walls It went to the television production students. And, eye-catching posters had been created by graphic design(美术设计) students. It’s a show of the students, by the students and for the students.
West Potomac High School is one of the several American high schools where technical classes are taught. Many educators believe career or technical classes help students learn much more than practical skills.
“We’re teaching cooperation and teamwork,” said Maria Kappel, career experience specialist at West Potomac High School.
Janet Bray, head of a career and technical education organization, said, “These kids are going on to college. They are learning leadership skills. They learn how to solve problems.” Such classes give teenagers a taste of what a career might be like.

America may still think of itself as the land of opportunities, but the chances of living a rags-to-riches life are a lot lower than elsewhere in the world, according to a new study.
The possibility that a child born into a poor family will make it into the top five percent is just one percent, according to a study by economist Tom Hertz from American University.
By contrast, a child born rich had a 22 percent chance of being rich as an adult, he said.
“In other words, the chances of getting rich are about 20 times higher if you are born rich, than if you are born in a low-income family,” Hertz said.
Compared to several European countries, it’s more possible in the United States for the poor to stay poor and the rich to stay rich. Consider a rich family and a poor one in the United States and a similar pair of families in Denmark, Hertz found that 22 percent American family would transmit the same income level from the parent generation to the children generation; in Denmark it would be two percent.
Another survey by the New York Times last year tells a different story. It found that 80 percent of those polled (投票) believed that it was possible to start out poor, work hard and become rich, compared with less than 60 percent back in 1983. That is to say, most Americans are optimistic about making economic improvements in their own lifetime.
The contradiction implies that while people think they are going to make it, the reality is very different.
Hertz’s research was based on data provided by over 4,000 children. Their parents’ income was observed in 1968, and when they became adults their own income was reviewed again in 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1999.
This study may disprove the myth of America as the land of opportunity, but it doesn’t tell us what to do to fix it.
43. According to Tom Hertz’s study, _________.
A. there are equal chances for those born rich and those born poor to get rich in America
B. those born rich have advantages over those born poor in many areas
C. those born poor don’t believe they can get rich through hard work
D. those born poor have little chance of getting rich however hard they work
pared with Americans, people in Denmark _______.
A. are more likely to live a rags-to-riches life
B. get less influence from their parents generation
C. can get rich with less effort
D. are more optimistic about their future
45. What’s the purpose of the survey by the New York Times mentioned in the passage
A. To provide further proof to the first study.
B. To support the main idea of the passage.
C. To support the author’s own view.
D. To provide proof against the first survey.
46. The two surveys mentioned in the passage make you believe that ________.
A. America is still the land of opportunities for most people
B. the American social system needs to be further improved
C. America is no longer the land of opportunities as many people believe
D. there is more fairness in Europe than in the United States

Charles Dickens was one of the great literary geniuses of all time and one of the most popular. It has been estimated that one out of ten Britons could read his works, and then read them aloud to many others!
Dickens was born in Portsmouth, southern England, in 1812. The good fortune of being sent to school at the age of nine was short-lived (昙花一现的), because his father was imprisoned for bad debt. Dickens was sent to work in Warren’s shoe-blacking factory and endured terrible conditions as well as loneliness and despair. After three years he was returned to school but the experience was never forgotten and became fictionalized (小说化) in two of his better-known novels David Copperfield and Great Expectations.
Like many others, Dickens began his literary career as a journalist. He wrote for several newspapers, gaining more and more popularity. In 1836 came the publication of the highly successful Pickwick Papers, and from that point on there was no looking back.
In addition to a talented novelist, Dickens was also a theatre enthusiast. He wrote plays and performed before Queen Victoria in 1851. Dickens was energetic; he spent much time abroad—for example, lecturing against slavery in the United States and touring Italy with Wilkie Collins, a writer who inspired Dickens’ final unfinished novel Mystery of Edwin Drood.
Dickens died of a stroke in 1870. He was buried at Westminster Abbey. During Dickens’ lifetime he became a mythic figure. It was said that when he died, a little girl cried “Dickens dead Then will Father Christmas die too ”

No school pays attention to building students’ self-discipline. Zoe Bellars and Brad McGann, eighth-graders at Swanson Middle School in Arlington, Va., do their homework faithfully and practise their musical instruments regularly. In a recent experiment, they declined to accept a dollar bill when told they could wait a week and get two dollars.
Those traits might be expected from good students, certainly no big deal. But a study by University of Pennsylvania researchers suggests that self-discipline is a better predictor of academic success than even IQ “Underachievement among American youth is often blamed on inadequate teachers, boring textbooks, and large class sizes,” the researchers said. “We suggest another reason for students falling short of their intellectual potential: their failure to exercise self-discipline.”
We believe that many of America’s children have trouble making choices that require them to sacrifice short-term pleasure for long-term gain, and that programs that build self-discipline may be the royal road to building academic achievement.
How can self-discipline be measured In the study, an assortment of standards was used, including questions for the students (such as how likely they are to have trouble breaking bad habits, on a 1-to-5 scale), ratings (评价) by their teachers and parents and the $1-now-or-$2-later test, which the researchers call the Delay Choice Task.
Highly self-disciplined teenagers outperformed their more impulsive (冲动的) fellows on every academic-performance variable, including report card grades, standardized achievement test scores, admission to a competitive high school and attendance. Self-discipline measured in the fall predicted more variance in each of these outcomes than did IQ, and unlike IQ, self-discipline predicted gains in academic performance over the school year.
Ryan Hill, director of the TEAM Academy Charter School in Newark, N.J., said students at his school are required to stay at school until their homework is done if TV interfered with study the night before. “Over time, they learn to just do their homework before watching TV, which becomes a habit of self-discipline,” Hill said.
51. The passage is mainly written to tell us ______.
A. how to be good students
B. ways to study well
C. what is self-discipline
D. self-discipline is critical to academic success
52. It can be inferred from the passage that Zoe Bellars and Brad McGann ______.

A. hoped B. decided
C. refused D. failed
pared to IQ, self-discipline ______.
A. has long-term influence on academic performance
B. predicts academic success

The Water Cycle
As we all know, more then 70% of the surface of the earth is covered by water. Do you know where the water comes from and why the water doesn’t dry up This is because the water cycle.
When the weather is fine, the heat of the sun evaporates water from the rivers, lakes, seas and oceans. Thus water vapor is formed, which rises and forms clouds in the air. When the clouds rise, they are cooled. The higher they rise, the cooler they are. This causes more and more water vapor to condense. In this way, the tiny drops of water in the clouds get bigger and bigger until they are heavy enough to fall to the earth as rain.
Some of the rainwater sinks into the ground, and is used up by plants. Most of them goes back to the rivers, lakes, seas and oceans. This is called the water cycle, which starts all over again.高三 期末测试

The earth is getting warmer. Over the past 100 years Earth's temperature rose by about 1°F. Scientists predict that Earth will continue to warm by about 2-6°F over the next 100 years. That may not sound like much, but think about this: During the last Ice Age, Earth was only 9°F cooler than it is today, and large sheets of ice called glaciers(冰河) covered large parts of North America! The warming of Earth's climate is called global warming.
Scientists are not sure of what causes climate change. Earth could be warming on its own, however, most scientists believe that human activity is speeding up the climate change. Earth warms itself through a process called the greenhouse(温室) effect. When sunlight enters Earth's atmosphere(大气), it passes through a layer of greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases occur naturally, but humans also create them by burning fossil fuels. When sunlight hits Earth's surface it bounces back toward the sky. The greenhouse gases trap some of the sunlight on Earth and allow the rest to go back into space, making Earth's temperature warm. The process works much in the same way as a greenhouse, hence its name. If there are too many greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, too much sunlight may be trapped(截留), making Earth warmer.
Scientists cannot predict exactly what will happen as Earth's temperature rises. They believe a rapid climate change could upset the balance of the ecosystem(生态系统), causing some land and marine(海产的) life to become extinct. As temperatures rise, the world's glaciers will melt (融化)into the ocean, causing sea levels to rise between several inches to three feet during the next 100 years. Higher sea levels could cause flooding of coastal lands. Warmer ocean water could cause increased storm activity on the coasts while areas away from the coasts may experience droughts. These are just a few of the possible effects of global warming.

Steve Sloan is the physical education teacher at Public School 102 in East Harlem, New York. He's a 50-year old man with a bald head and bulging muscles. He can hit three-pointers and even half court shots, but the amazing thing is that he can't see them go in.
Steve Sloan has been blind since birth. But the fact he can't see has never stopped Sloan, who works out seven days a week.
Sloan has been working at P.S. 102 for 21 years. He is making his first trip abroad this month to Torino, Italy, to carry the Olympic torch. "This is an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I will cherish forever," he says.
The Olympic torch(火炬) took off on its 7,021.5-mile trip through 140 Italian cities on December 8. It will reach the site of the 2006 Winter Olympics during the opening ceremonies on February 10. More than 10,000 people who represent Olympic values will take part in the torch run.
Sloan in many way matches the profile of an Olympic athlete, who displays the values of unity and peace among peoples, loyalty, courage, humanity, and solidarity. His values are reflected in his close relationships with his students.
Sloan has nicknames(绰号) for every kid. Some of them include Hot Sauce, Beetles, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Biscuit, and WNBA. He is strict if you aren't wearing sneakers(运动鞋) and sweat pants or shorts, you aren't allowed to participate in gym-but to the students it just shows how much he cares about them.
"He makes coming to gym so much fun," said Christina (Hot Sauce) Perez.
One amazing fact about Sloan is that he can guide you around the school without his walking stick. He knows every hallway, door, and floor in the five-story school by heart. He takes the subway train to work every day. If there is an emergency in the school, Lorenzo Cowell, Sloan's assistant, makes sure that everyone is safe. Otherwise, Sloan is totally self-sufficient. When you sit in his office and look at his stocky build inside a gray and black warm up suit, it's easy to forget that he can't see.
"I can get you anywhere you want to go," Steve Sloan says with a warm smile. "Just don't ask me to read the signs along the way."

COCHESTER HILLS, Michigan (AP) —A little more than 10 years ago , Tricia Mack was a student at Rochester Adams High School who dreamed of becoming an astronaut .
Today, Ms. Mack is a 27 year-old aerospace engineer for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (国家宇航局) and is traveling to Russian to work on an international space station. It was a quick journey from Rochester Hills to NASA but instead of being an astronaut, Ms. Mack is training them. She knew she wanted to be involved with outer space, even as far back as her days at West Middle School. And although Ms. Mack knew where she wanted to go, she also knew what it would take. She offers simple advice for kids who might see themselves as future NASA employees: Study your math and science.
After graduating from college, she was offered a job at NASA’s Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, just outside Houston. There, she became a very good trainer and has spent most of her time teaching astronauts how to use their $8 million space suits.
Ms. Mack teaches everything from putting on the suits to explaining how to read the warning features. Ms. Mack shows astronauts how to understand information on the suit itself, as well as warning they might hear in their helmets (头盔). Later, she’ll teach astronauts how to do certain things in their suits.
“We have a huge pool that the astronauts are placed in. They wear weights so it feels like neutral gravity (无引力) where they’re not sinking and they’re not floating to the surface ,” she said . “Underwater, astronauts have a stand-in for the conditions in outer space.”
Ms. Mack will continue this role as she begins her work on an international space station project. More than 40 flights through 2004 will be taken to the space station. Those include trips by the American shuttles (航天飞机)and the Russian Soyuz rockets , which hold three persons .
While Russians have left astronauts on space stations for as long as one year , American crews (机组人员)are not expected to be on the space station longer than 180 days at a time , Ms . Mack explained.
As Tricia’s mum, Barbara points out her daughter’s success shows one thing very clearly: “Love your work and you can live your dream, ” she said.

Anders Celsius was born in 1701 in Sweden. He succeeded his father as professor of astronomy at the University of Uppsala in 1730. It was there that he built Sweden's first observatory(天文台) in 1741. One of the major questions of that time was the shape of the Earth. Isaac Newton had proposed that the Earth was not completely spherical(球的,球形的), but rather flattened at the poles. Cartographic measuring in France suggested that it was the other way around - the Earth was elongated(拉长、伸长) at the poles. In 1735, one expedition sailed to Ecuador in South America, and another expedition traveled to Northern Sweden. Celsius was the only professional astronomer on that expedition. Their measurements seemed to indicate that the Earth actually was flattened at the poles. Celsius was not only an astronomer, but also a physicist. He and an assistant discovered that the aurora(极光) borealis had an influence on compass(罗盘) needles. However, the thing that made him famous is his temperature scale, which he based on the boiling and melting points of water. Celsius' fixed scale for measuring temperature defines zero degrees as the temperature at which water freezes, and 100 degrees as the temperature at which water boils. This scale, an inverted form of Celsius' original design, was adopted as the standard and is used in almost all-scientific work.

About one-third of a typical home’s heat loss occurs through the doors and windows. Energy-efficient doors are insulated(隔热的) and seal tightly to prevent air from leaking through or around them. If your doors are in good shape and you don’t want to replace them, make sure they seal tightly and have door sweeps at the bottom to prevent air leaks. Installing(安装) insulated storm doors provides an additional barrier to leaking air.
Most homes have many more windows than doors. Replacing older windows with new energy-efficient ones can reduce air leaks and utility bills. The best windows shut tightly and are constructed of two or more pieces of glass separated by a gas that does not conduct heat well.
If you cannot replace older windows, there are several things you can do to make them more energy efficient. First, caulk(填......以防漏) any cracks around the windows and make sure they seal tightly. Add storm windows or sheets of clear plastic to the outside to create additional air barriers. You can also hang insulated window curtain on the inside—during the winter, open them on sunny days and close them at night. During the summer, close them during the day to keep out the sun.
52.If you don’t want to replace the door, you can:
A. Seal the door tightly

Dear editor:
Recently our class had a debate over whether Super Girls should be regarded as role models of the young people. Some think it is quite natural for Super Girls to be popular, because the common people are allowed to voice their own opinions. Above all, they break the traditional value of beauty and represent a new fashion.
However, others believe it is wrong for young people to admire Super Girls too much, because they can’t stand for the main social trend. What’s worse, they can mislead young people.
In my opinion, middle school students should learn from real heroes, like Yang Liwei and Hong Zhanhui and try to make contributions to our country in the future!
Best wishes!

There was an engineer who had an exceptional gift for fixing all mechanical things. After serving his company heart and soul for over 25 years, he happily retired. Several years later his company contacted him regarding a seemingly impossible problem they were having with one of their multi-million-dollar machines. They had tried everything and asked everyone else to get the machine fixed, but no help.
In desperation(绝望), they called on the retired engineer who had solved so many of their problems in the past. The engineer unwillingly took the challenge. He spent a day studying the huge machine.
At the end of the day he marked a small X in chalk on a particular part of the machine and proudly stated, “This is where your problem is.” The part was replaced and the machine worked perfectly again.
The company received a bill for $20,001 from the engineer for his service. They told him to make a list of his charges.

I have a friend who lives by a three-word philosophy: Seize the moment. Just possibly, she may be the wisest woman on this planet. Too many people put off something that brings them joy just because they haven’t thought about it, don’t have it on their schedule, didn’t know it was coming or are too strict to depart from their routine.
I can’t count the times I called my sister and said, “How about going to lunch in half an hour ” She would gasp and stammer(结结巴巴地说),“I can’t. I have clothes on the line. My hair is dirty. I wish I had known yesterday, I had a late breakfast. It looks like rain.” And my personal favorite response: “It’s just Monday.” She died a few years ago. We did never have lunch together. From then on, I’ve tried to be a little more flexible.
Life has a way of going faster as we get older. The days get shorter, and the list of promises made to ourselves gets longer. One morning, we awaken, and all we have to show for our lives is repetition of “I’m going to”, “I plan to” and “Someday, when things are settled down a bit. ”
When anyone calls my “seize the moment ” friend, she is open to adventure and available for trips. She keeps an open mind on new ideas. Her enthusiasm for life is contagious .You talk with her for five minutes, and you’re ready to trade your bad feet for a pair of Rollerblades and skip an elevator for a bungee cord.
My lips have not touched ice cream in 10 years. I love ice cream. The other day, I stopped the car and bought a triple-decker. If my car had hit an iceberg on the way home, I would have died happy.
Now … go on and have a nice day. Do something you WANT to … not something on your SHOULD DO list.

Time and time again, one may be warned, “Your name will be mud.” Many have used the expression in the mistaken belief that it has something to do with the kind of dirt found in the streets or on unclean river bottoms. But the expression comes from the name of Doctor Samuel Alexander Mudd, a physician who fixed the broken leg of John Willes Booth, the man who killed President Abraham Lincoln. Doctor Mudd treated Booth's injured leg without knowing who he was.
A small group helped Booth to plan Lincoln's murder. They were all caught and sentenced to death or prison terms.
Doctor Mudd had nothing to do with Lincoln's murder or with any of the men who had planned it. All seemed to show that he was an innocent(清白)man. But he had given some kind of help only to leave Booth to escape. This in itself was a crime then. And so, Doctor Mudd was sentenced to prison for life.
In prison, Doctor Mudd saved many prisoners and guards in a yellow fever outbreak. President Andrew Johnson pardoned him in 1869, after the doctor had spent almost four years in prison.
The American people considered the murder of Lincoln a heavy blow to them. It filled them with bitterness that lasted many years. They hated Booth very much and they also hated anybody who had helped the murderer in any way. Doctor Mudd was freed, but people never forgave him and his name passed into American folk speech as something bad, hateful. The Mudd family had also suffered a lot because of the name until not long ago.

Today the majority of jobs in America, Europe and Japan (two thirds or more in many of these countries) are in the service industry, and the number is on the rise. More people are self-employed. But the breadth of the economic transformation can't be measured by numbers alone, because it also is giving rise to a radical(完全的) new way of thinking about the nature of work itself. Long-held notions about jobs and careers, the skills needed to succeed, even the relation between individuals and employers—all these are being challenged.
We have only to look behind us to get some sense of what may lie ahead. No one looking ahead 20 years possibly could have foreseen the ways in which a single invention, the chip, would transform our world thanks to its applications in personal computers, digital communications and factory robots. Tomorrow's achievements in biotechnology, artificial intelligence or even some still unimagined technology could produce a similar wave of dramatic changes. But one thing is certain: information and knowledge will become even more vital(极其重要的), and the people who possess it, whether they work in manufacturing of services, will have the advantage and reduce the puter knowledge will become as basic a requirement as the ability to read and write. The ability to solve problems by applying information instead of performing routine tasks will be valued above all else. If you cast your mind ahead 10 years, information services will be predominant(最有利的). It will be the way you do your job.
52. A characteristic of the information age is that ______.
A. most of the job opportunities can now be found in the service industry

A. people should be able to respond quickly to the advancement of technology

It's Time to Reduce Loads
Nowadays, we often hear people complain that it is expensive to buy houses, to pay for the children's education and to see the doctor, which is really true. As is shown in the picture, some people are burdened with high expenses all their lives. Some people even get stuck in heavy debt even though they make their efforts to earn money and save every coin. Because of lack of money, some people have no room to live in. Some can't send their children to school. And some others even can't seek for treatment in the hospital and have to bear the pain of diseases.
In my opinion, the government should build up a perfect system to meet the basic needs of living. The expenses on houses, tuition and medicine should be cut down so that everyone can enjoy a better life.高三 Units 7-8单元测试

It can be said that tea is the most popular drink in the world, apart from just plain water. Even the word for “tea” in many languages around the world comes from different changes of the Chinese word “茶”.
Chinese tea can be classified into 5 kinds. Green tea is perhaps the most natural, with no fermentation (发酵) of the leaves. Longjing, Maofeng and Biluochun are the most famous varieties. Black tea, known in China as red tea, is fermented before being baked. This is the kind of tea most commonly drunk in the West. Wulong tea is a variety half way between green and black teas, being made after partial fermentation. It is a specialty (特产) from southeast China, particularly Fujian, Guangdong and Taiwan. Compressed tea are teas that have been, of course, compressed and hardened into a certain shape. These are often called brick tea. We will learn a bit about this when we visit Inner Mongolia. Finally, we have flower tea. This kind of tea is made by adding flowers or other fragrances in with the tea. Jasmine (茉莉花) tea is perhaps the most famous.
Tea has been one of the daily necessities in China for thousands of years, and has spread to be enjoyed by people around the world.

South Africa’s first black president Nelson Mandela is to become a comic strip hero(漫画男主角)in a new project aimed at encouraging young people to read, his charity foundation said.
“We are using comics to get across the message and the values of Mr. Mandela,” John Samuel, chief executive of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, said Thursday. One million copies of each of the seven comic strips describing Mandela’s life will be distributed in newspapers and schools across South Africa as part of events celebrating the ex-president’s 87th birthday on July 18.
“Comics are an extremely useful way of bringing young people into reading,” said Samuel. “Comics in fact are a very powerful tool for introducing literature and various aspects of reading to young people.”
“And this is our goal here,” he told a news conference.
Samuel dismissed a suggestion that the world’s most respected statesman should not be reduced to a comic figure. “It would take a lot more than comics to demean (贬低) his stature,” said Samuel. “That’s the least of our problems.”
Mandela is to spend his 87th birthday with his wife Graca Machel, the wife of former Mozambican president Samora Machel, his three daughters, grand-children and great-grandchildren, at his home in the Eastern Cape village of Qunu.

BOSTON (Reuters) - Climate change could be slowed by burying greenhouse gases blamed for global warming deep below the ocean floor under thick, cold sediment (沉积物)) that would trap it for thousands of years, said a team of Harvard-led scientists.
The seafloor along the U.S. east and west coast is vast enough to store almost unlimited carbon dioxide emissions from U.S. coal-fired plants, said Daniel Schrag, director of Harvard's Center for the Environment.
"It would make coal a green fuel," he said in a telephone interview with Reuters.
Carbon dioxide released by burning fossil fuels is the main gas blamed for pushing up world temperatures. Many scientists say the buildup could trigger more floods, droughts, powerful storms, heat waves and rising world sea levels.
Schrag's team at Harvard and researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Columbia University propose capturing carbon dioxide from power plants, liquefying (液化) the gas, pumping it about 2 miles under water and then injecting it below the sea floor.
Many governments and firms are already exploring ways to pump carbon dioxide under land or directly into the sea -- a process known as carbon sequestration(没收) -- to meet emissions caps set by the U.N.'s Kyoto Protocol for 35 industrial nations.
But such schemes will only help if the gas stays below the ground or the sea for hundreds of years, and studies and experiments to date indicate it may eventually leak.
Schrag said burying the gas under seafloor sediments of sand, silt and clay hundreds of meters (feet) thick at depths of 3,000 meters (9,800 ft) and very low temperatures would guarantee it would stay denser than the water above.
"The only place it can leak is deeper down," he said.
48. What is the text mainly about
A. Scientists urge deep-sea cure for climate change.
B. What is to blame for climate change.
C. A new way to reduce the effect of carbon dioxide.
D. Possibilities and difficulties of burying greenhouse gases.
49. From the text, we can know that ____________.
coal is not a main fuel in the US and so not much Carbon dioxide is released
the US burns a lot of coal but it has been made a green fuel
most of the carbon dioxide released by burning fossil fuels in the US has been buried
the US burns a lot of coal and a lot of greenhouse gases are released
50. Why does Schrag think of the way of burying greenhouse gases in deep sea floor
He thinks it will work but still has some worries.
Although the gas may leak, it will not cause any damage.
It won’t work well unless the problem of leaking is solved.
He thinks it may leak and cause damage to the deep ocean life.
51. What does the underlined word “caps” mean in the passage
A. demands B. protective coverings
C. upper limits D. documents

New mothers should hold their naked babies next to their skin for the first hour after birth so they can bond together, says a leading midwife(助产士). The 'golden hour' helps calm the baby, build up resistance to infection and get breastfeeding off to a good start.
Dr Mary Price, a lecturer in midwifery at the University of Salford, said women should resist attempts by hospital staff to 'whisk away' the baby shortly after the birth, especially after having a Caesarean section.
Although it is common practice to allow mother and baby 10 minutes together skin-to-skin, it's not long enough to give them time to get the bonding process underway, she said.
She said 'I would like midwives throughout the UK to learn the benefits of leaving the baby with its mother for much longer.
'It's important to have an immediate assessment of the baby's condition after birth - but an experienced midwife can do that simply by looking at them, without taking the child away. I've known situations where the baby has been taken away because it needs help with breathing. But the baby goes from extremely anxious-looking to a rosebud pink within minutes once they are taken back into the mother's arms.'
She believes mothers need to be given more information on the importance of skin-to-skin contact for calming the baby and building up resistance to infection.
Babies have a 'primitive urge' to find food and naturally head for the breast if left long enough, she told Nursing Standard magazine. The hour after birth can also shape a child's emotions and there should be no rush to clean it up, she added.
Dr Price's methods have been routinely adopted at Rochdale Infirmary and she hopes they will become known nationwide.
52. Dr Mary Price holds the view that ________________.
hospital staff should take away the baby shortly after the birth
women should refuse to have their babies taken away after the birth
women should insist on having their babies with them after the birth
women should find ways to calm their babies shortly after the birth
53. Which of the following is not among the benefits of newly-born babies staying with their mothers
A. Having less chance of infection. B. Getting the bonding process underway.
C. Getting calm. D. Starting breastfeeding sooner.
54. When a baby returns to its mother’s arms after getting breathing, the baby ____________.
A. still remains anxious B. soon becomes relaxed and calms down
C. will breathe more normally D. will shape its emotions
55. We can learn from the passage that Dr Price's methods ___________.
A. have been widely accepted B. are against the common practice

Dear Principal,
These days all my classmates are talking about employing foreign teachers.
Some students think it’s necessary to have foreign teachers because it can provide us with a better opportunity to learn English. We can practice spoken English with native speakers and improve our language abilities. Moreover, it can make us more interested in the English language. We can learn more about some foreign customs and culture.
On the contrary, some other students are strongly against the idea. They think the most important thing for us is to be admitted into universities. However, having a foreign teacher seems to be no good to improve the academic achievements. And it may cause some trouble while communicating with them as there is culture diversity. What is worse, it costs a lot of money to employ foreign teachers.
Anyway you are Principal. We believe you will make a wise decision.

“When you make peace with yourself, then you can be in peace with the rest of the world. If you can recognize the spirit in yourself, you can recognize the spirit in everyone, and then you find it natural to be kind and well disposed to all. If your thoughts are under your control you become strong and firm. The outer mask of the personality is like a robot programmed to do certain tasks. Your habits and thoughts are the programs. Be free from these programming and then the inner good that resides in you will be shown. Just quieten your feelings and thoughts and try to stay in this peace. All the abilities and powers awaken spontaneously(本能地). You do not work on them directly. They are by-products of your peace of mind. Just try to be calm and do not let yourself be carried away by your thoughts.” said the old man.
“There is another thing that I am curious about,”said the villager and continued, “You do not seem to be influenced by the environment. You have a kind word to everyone and are helpful. Yet people do not exploit(剥削,不正当的利用) your goodness, and they treat you well.”
“Goodness and being kind do not necessarily point to weakness. When you are good you can also be strong. People sense your strength and do not impose on you. When you are strong and calm inside, you help people because you can and you want to. Goodness can also go with power and strength; it is not a sign of weakness as some people incorrectly think.”
“Thank you very much for your advice”, said the villager and went away happily with satisfaction.

German and British police expressed delight today at the behaviour of the 60,000 English fans who gathered in Nuremberg for England’s second World Cup match. Despite the number of supporters, there were just 28 arrests, most for low-level offences(罪过).
The city council has already reconsidered its plans because of the size of England’s travelling support. It had been predicted that 100,000 fans would be in Germany at some point during the match, but that now seems a huge underestimate—70,000 were in Frankfurt and only 10,000 fewer in Nuremberg.
A new public viewing ground with big screens will be built purely for England fans in Cologne with a capacity of 30,000. England are already guaranteed a place in the last 16 after their 2-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago(特立尼达和多巴哥), but the Sweden game will help determine whether England play Germany or Ecuador in Munich or Stuttgart next weekend.
Of the 28 arrests in Nuremberg, 16 fans were arrested at the stadium, some for climbing over security fences in an attempt to see the match. In the city centre there were 12 arrests, including six for assaults, one for being drunk, two for ticket touting and one for selling forged(伪造的) tickets. Most were released yesterday and none is likely to face proceedings in Germany.
Bars in the centre began emptying by 10.30pm on Thursday as fans caught late trains back to Frankfurt, where many are based for the Cup, and some 52 chartered flights took day-tripping fans back directly to the UK.

A lot of grown-ups worry that spending too much time playing video games isn’t good for a kid’s health.
But some doctors have noticed that kids who bring their handheld game players to the hospital seem less worried about being there. These patients also seem to experience less pain when they are concentrating on a superhero adventure or a car race.
At the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Balti 鄄more, Maryland, young patients are finding hospital visits easier to deal with, thanks to a test program called the Hospital-based Online Pediatric Environment (HOPE).
Patients in HOPE have a life-threatening condition where their kidneys(肾) no longer clean wastes from their blood. To get their blood cleaned, these kids must be hooked up to dialysis (pronounced dye-AL-uh-sis) machines at the hospital three times a week, for at least three hours each time.
HOPE allows kids to play online sports, racing, and adventure games with each other. Eventually they will be able to connect with kids in other hospitals who are undergoing the same procedure(程序).
“We want to use the power of the Internet to bring together kids who feel they are isolated by their illness, and let them know they are not alone,”said Arun Mathews, the doctor who heads the program. He loves video games himself and has got the idea to connect kids all over the country.
Many researchers elsewhere are testing video programs that might help young patients. For example, nine-year-old Ben Duskin of San Francisco, California, who was struggling with cancer helped to design a video game where players get rid of cancer cells.
That’s all great news, because doctors already know that reducing pain and worry helps patients cure faster.

Africa’s rivers face dramatic disruption(中断) that will leave a quarter of the continent severely short of water by the end of the century, according to a global warming study published today.
The study, which appears in the journal Science today, is the first to identify how Africa’s rivers will respond to climate change over the century. The extent to which slight changes in rainfall could impact(冲击) on rivers had never been realized.
The researchers used a computer to divide the continent into 1,000km wide squares (about 620 miles) and worked out the total length of streams and rivers in each block. They used climate to change models to calculate the expected changes in rainfall across the continent and the effect they would have on river levels. The scientists found that in 75% of the countries, those that received between 400mm and 1,000mm of rain a year, shifts in rainfall caused larger than expected rises or falls in river levels. In Harare a 10% drop in rainfall is expected to lead to an 81% drop in fresh water from rivers, a situation the scientists believe will be mirrored in Madagascar, eastern Zambia and Angola.
South Africa, which is experiencing a long-drawn-out drought, can expect far less water from the Orange river. A 10% fall in rain over Johannesburg and Bloemfontein will lead to a 70% drop in river levels.
The study predicts rain will increase over east Africa. Climate change is expected to bring 10% more rain to Tanzania before the end of the century, increasing water course levels by 136%, while Somalia faces a 20% rise in rainfall, leading to more than a 1,000% increase in the water it receives from waterways. However, increased rainfall could lead to more standing water, more mosquitoes, and widespread malaria.
52. How many African countries are referred to in the passage
A. 5 B. 6 C. 7 D. 8
53. Researchers did a lot of work in their study EXCEPT _______.
A. dividing the continent into 1,000km wide squares by using computer
B. working out the total length of streams and rivers in each block

When white men first came to New Zealand, forests covered more than one half of the country. Today about a quarter of the area is forested. Much of the timber was cut or burned to clear land for pastures and crops. In the early days, clearing the land by fire, grazing by too many sheep, and damage caused by rabbits reduced the productivity of the land. Much has been done in recent years, however, to improve the situation. In hilly country, soil erosion is also a serious problem.
Coal is New Zealand’s most valuable mineral. It is used for steam locomotives, in the making of gas, for fuel in homes and factories, and to produce electricity. About a third of the coal comes from around Greymouth on South Island. Natural gas has been found on the North Island in the South Taranaki Bight. Nearly all of the nation’s supply of gasoline and fuel oil has to be imported, however.
In New Zealand, the hydroelectric supply is mainly on South Island, while most of the people and factories are in the North Island, the power networks of the two main islands are being linked by submarine cable across the Cook Strait.
New Zealand is rich in bird life. Some birds that could not fly were able to exist in New Zealand because they had no natural enemies. It has an exotic animals, the tuatara. (Family Circle) No time for a complete spring clean Skip the annual top-to-bottom, and focus on these five seasonal tasks. These maintenance must-do’s, on top of your regular clean routine, will set you up for an easy season.
1. Caulk (填塞) cracks. Winter’s cold often leaves cracks in walls, inviting dust and pests in. Once the weather warms, grab a caulking tube and look for trouble spots—especially near doors, windows and some other openings.
2. Protect your wood furniture with an annual coat of wax. Many furniture polishes contain oils, which actually attract dust. But with a coat of wax, furniture will need nothing more than a quick clean with a damp cloth.
3. Wash windows in a flash by using a special bottle of window cleaner designed to attach to your garden hose (软管) (available at home centers). Spray (喷), let the solution sit on the glass for a minute, then hose it off with clear water.
4. Change the air-conditioner filters (过滤器). A winter of forced-air heating dirties filter, so when the soon-to-be-cooled air hits a dirty filter, dust happens. Consider replacing that standard model with a HEPA filter, which screens out even the tiniest particles of dust.

The world economy is uncertain, and for many people job-hunting has become a lifestyle. With takeovers, bankruptcies and new government legislation, you could be unemployed overnight—even if you own the company!
Make it a priority (优先考虑的事) to let your network of personal friends, and business acquaintances know where you are and what you’re doing at all times, especially when you change jobs or addresses. Announce changes even if it’s an intercompany move.
Once you land a job, you get busy packing, moving, tying up loose ends, and taking on the duties of the new assignment; but that’s a mistake. Remember, your first duty is to your career. This doesn’t mean your new assignment isn’t important. It means your friendships and your personal future are equally important.
The quickest way to handle the thank-you task is to give your letter and mailing list to a secretarial service. Let them type and address the letters; you sign them. This requires very little time and energy, probably less than two hours. Believe me, it’s time well spent, and you can enclose your new business card. E-mail is also effective, but it’s less personal. As readers are bombarded by e-mails, paper letters are becoming more attention-getting and memorable.
The “Announce New Job” letter is a good model. It’s a combination newsletter, change of address, and thank-you, all in one—and it’s limited to one page.
The best time to find a new job is when you don’t need one, and the best time to cultivate business relationships is when everything is going smoothly.
47. The major purpose for the writer to write this passage is _____.
A. to analyse the reason for frequent job-huntings
B. to tell us how to get used to our new jobs as soon as possible
C. to remind us to keep in touch with our friends and business partners at all times
D. to advise us on how to find a suitable job
48. If you want to inform your friends or business partners of your current job and address, you’d better _____.
A. make phones to them one by one B. send e-mails to them
C. write paper letters by yourself to them one by one
D. ask someone else to type the “Announce New Job” letters and you sign them
49. It can be inferred from the passage that _____.
A. as long as you do well in your job, you won’t lose your job
B. you are not supposed to find a new job if you have a high-paying job now
C. you should try to look for some other jobs which fit you even you are quite satisfied with your current job
D. you should find as many jobs as you can
50. When you write the “Announce New Job” letters, you should NOT _____.
A. spend too much time B. enclose your business card
C. write only one page D. express thanks to your friends

To be sure, only children experienced some things differently from those with sisters and brothers. Many feel more pressure to succeed. They also tend to look only to their parents as role models in the absence of brothers and sisters.
In India, 10-year-old Saviraj Sankpal founded a support group for the tiny minority of only children. Among other things, the group does volunteer work to counter (反对) the myth that they are not responsible. "People think we're treated too kindly and ruined, "says Sankpal, a computer engineering student. "But I'd like to remind them how lonely it can get."
Most only children, however, say they wish for sisters or brothers only when it comes to caring for aging, unhealthy parents. Britain's David Emerson, co-author of the book The Only Child, says that such a person bears terrible burden in having to make all the decisions alone. Emerson knows from experience: After his father died, he chose to move his elderly mother from their family home, where she was vulnerable (易受攻击的) to house breakers, to a new one with more security. "The move was quite hard on her, and she might feel that I pushed her into it, "he says, "After all, I am left with that responsibility."
In the future, more and more only children will likely face similar choices. With working mothers increasing, many families have found they simply don't have the time, money or energy to have more than one child. As only children become common, perhaps the world will realize that the charge(指控) made against them is unjust.

One possible version:
Recently, the students of our school have had a heated discussion about whether GM food (genetically modified food) is good or bad for us human beings. More than two thousand students took actively part in the discussion in all. More than half of them are in favor of GM food. Among them, 20 percent of the students like GM food because they think that we can produce more food in this way. And 38 percent of the students believe that we can make crops more resistant to drought and insects by changing the genes of the crops. And, almost one third of the students are against GM food. They fear that planting GM crop could cause new enviroment problems, and eating GM food could be harmful to the health of human beings. In addition, there are ten percent of the students who have no idea about it yet.
