Text 1
M:I would like to drop maths. It’s so difficult.
W:You can’t drop it! It’s very important.
Text 2
M:Mum, I can’t find my pencil-box.
W:Isn’t it on the table?
M:No, it isn’t. Oh, it’s on the chair.
Text 3
M:Be careful! There is much traffic.
W:But I must get to the office as soon as possible.
M:Anyway, you mustn’t cross the road from here. It’s dangerous.
Text 4
W:Mike, can you help me, please?
M:Yes, what’s wrong?
W:I want my kite. It’s in that tree.
M:Don’t worry. I can get it down for you.
Text 5
M:Good morning, madam. What can I do for you?
W:Good morning, madam. How much should I pay for these books to be sent to New York?
M:Hm, twenty dollars.
Text 6
M:Good morning, madam. Can I help you? Your motor-car looks rather badly damaged.
W:Yes, I was coming here for oil. When I go into the car this morning, I found there was very little oil left, although my husband said he put some in yesterday. On the way I had an accident, and could hardly get here. Now I’ll have to have the car with you.
M:What’s happened?
W:I hit a tree. I lost control of the car for a moment because of a cat in front of me.
M:I congratulate you on your escape.
W:I did not lose control of the wheel for very long. It was fortunate that I wasn’t hurt, but it gave me a shock.
M:This is a very old car. A new one would be much safer.
W:Could you provide a new one? My husband drives a lot. He will be in a very difficult position without a car.
M:What is he?
W:He’s a doctor. He said we should get a new car yesterday. He will settle the matter with you himself. Oh, my mouth still hurts. I cut my lower lip. I’m determined to be a slow driver in future.
Text 7
W:Let me look at the map, Jim. Now if you look carefully, you’ll see that we are just here.
M:No, we aren’t, Rose. We’re at this coner.
W:Excuse me, Jim, we’re just gone through the village. Now if we had turned to the left at the crossroads, we would have come out on the main road. But we didn’t; so now we’re walking south instead of west.
M:Well, we can still get across to the main road. Look, if we go on another quarter of a mile, we’ll come to a path across these fields. Can you see it there, marked with a dotted line? Well, if we take that path, it will bring us out on the road near the hotel.
W:That’s a good idea.
M:And if we hurry, we can get there before closing time. I wish we had bicycles. If we had bicycles, we’d get there in five minutes.
W:Never mind. Let’s go on quickly. I’m thirsty.
Text 8

M:I played for about six years. But I haven’t practiced much since I came to college. Why do you ask?
W:I’m singing for a group that meets once a week on Wednesday. We have several piano and violin players, but only one guitar player.
M:Who is directing the group?
W:Janet Hanson.
M:Well, I’m afraid I’ll need a lot of time before my playing sounds good.
W:Don’t worry about that.
M:I’ll try to play this evening and see how I am.
W:I’m sure you will be just fine. I will expect to see you at our weekly meeting.
Text 10
Mr White was at the theater. He found himself in the middle of a group of American ladies, some of them middle-aged and some quite old. Before the curtain went up on the play, they all talked and joked a lot together.
After the first act of the play, one lady apologized to Mr White for the noiseness of her friends. He answered that he was very glad to see American ladies to obviously enjoying their visit to England. Mr White’s neighbor explained what they were doing there.
“You know, I have known these ladies all my life,” she said, “they have all lost their husbands, and call themselves the Merry Widows. They go abroad every summer for a month or two and have a lot of fun. I had wanted to join their club for a long time, but I didn’t qualify for membership until the spring of this year.
