The Syrian government says security forces killed 3 terrorists and wounded a 4th in a failed (因为这次袭击没有成功 ) car bomb attack on the US Embassy in Damascus early today. State media report that one Syrian security guard was killed and at least 11 bystanders injured including a Chinese diplomat. No Americans were hurt.
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice thanked Syria for repelling the attack. She said it's too early to say who was responsible for the assault.

President Bush says the United States is safer now than when the terrorist attacked on September 11th, 2001. He says the nation is not immune now from new attacks. Mr. Bush spoke to the nation Monday on the 5th anniversary of the attacks.America did not ask for this war, and every American wishes it was over.So do I. But the war is not over, and it will not be over untill either we or the extremists emerge victories.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says he has offered to help Iraq to bring its insurgencies under control. At a news conference in Tehran with visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, Mr. Ahmadinejad said improve security in Iraq will enhance stability throughout the region. Mr. Maliki met with the Iranian Predident today at the beginning of a two-day visit.

The Palestinian militant group Hamas says it is prepared to approve peace talks with Israel as a part of a new unity government with a Fatah party of President Mahmoud Abbas. But a Hamas spokesman did not say the group is ready to recognize Israel's right to exist. He said the group will allow President Abbas to conduct peace negotiations with Israel.
The United States anti-drug cheif has called for a strong military action by NATO forces to destroy the opium industry in southern Afghanistan. Head of the UN office on drugs and crime Antonio Maria Costa told a news conference in Brussels today profits from opium production have being used to fund terrorist activity.
Australia has sent 37 East Timorese refugees back home after their temporary visas expired. The group had fled East Timor after the recent sectarian violence there and many of the returnees were sent home against their will. From Sydney, F.M. has report
There were emotional scenes at Darwin airport as the East Timorese began their short journey home. Many didn't want to go. They originally saw refugees in Australia after violence broke out in the Timorese capital Dili in May. They have insisted, they will not be safe back home. The violence earlier this year between soilders from different parts of the tiny country forced many Dili residents to flee their homes in panic. Tens of thousands of people are still living in makeshift camps, afraid to return home, even though the political situation has stablized. Australia, New Zealand, Portugal and Malaysia sent soldiers and police officers to East Timor after the violence began to help restore peace. The Australian government announced Monday that it will be sending additional troops to add to the 1,000 already there. The government says / violence in Dili is now only sporadic however.
