It seems that fate likes to play strange jokes on those who are famous. The manner in which fate saved Clive of India for his mission in history is a matter of record. Downhearted, ill, and depressed,Clive, then a young clerk, placed a revolver ( 左轮枪手) to his head and snapped the trigger time after time. It refused to fire and he realized that suicide was not to be his lot. A subordinate (下属) took the same pistol from Clive' s hand and fired it six times in succession(连续).
A somewhat different but disturbing fate laid in store for Robert Todd Lincoln, the eldest son of the Civil War President. Young Lincoln had received orders to report to Washington. In White House he was told that his parents had gone to Ford' s Theatre and they had requested that he join them there. Robert Todd Lincoln went to the theatre and, just as he entered the building, he was tbrced back by a crowd of excited people, among whom were the stretcher bearers( ~!! ~ ~'a )carrying the dying President.
During the administration of President Garfield, Robert Todd Lincoln became Secretary of War. He was a close personal friend of President Garfield and, when the President prepared to leave for a visit to the seashore at Elberon, New Jersey, Secretary Lincoln accepted an invitation to go along. As Secretary Lincoln reached the railway station, he encountered the stretcher bearers carrying out the fatally wounded President Garfield, victim of an assassin' s( 刺客的) bullet.
Twenty years later, as Robert Todd Lincoln entered the Temple of Music in Buffalo to greet President Mckinley, the President was carried past him by stretcher bearers. There is much discussion today about whether economic growth is desirable. At an earlier period, our desire for material wealth might have been justified. Now, however, this desire for more than we need is causing serious problems. Even though we have good intentions, we may be producing too much, too fast.
Those who criticize economic growth argue that we must slow down. They believe that society is approaching certain limits on growth. These include the fixed supply of natural resources, the possi negative effects of industry on the natural environment, and the continuing increase in the word’s population. As society reaches these limits, economic growth can no longer continue, and the quality of life will decrease.
People who want more economic growth, on the other hand, argue that even at the present growth rate there are still many poor people in the world. These proponents of economic growth believe that only more growth can create the capital needed to improve the quality of life in the world. Furthermore, they argue that only continued growth can provide the financial resources required to protect our natural surroundings from industrialization.
The debate over the desirability of continued economic growth is of vital importance to business and industry. If those who argue against economic growth are correct, the problems they mentioned above cannot be ignored. To find a solution, economists and the business community must pay attention to these problems and continue discussing them with one another.

There are over one million superstitions(迷信), and most people believe at least one or two of them.
Many people are superstitious about numbers. They think that there are lucky numbers and unlucky numbers.
The number 13 is often considered unlucky. In some paris of the world, buildings have no 13th floor and streets have no houses with the number 13. In Japan, "4" is considered unlucky because in Japanese the word "four" is pronounced the same as the word "death" .
Japanese never give gifts of four knives, four napkins( ~ ~ ), or four of anything.
What are the lucky numbers? Seven is a lucky number in many places, and "8" is considered a lucky number in Japan and China. In China, businesses often open on August 8, and many couples register to get married at eight past eight on August 8.
Superstitions about numbers are so widespread that some people--called numerologist--make a living by giving advice about numbers.
In 1937, when the Toyoda family of Japan wanted to form a car company, they asked a numerologist if "Toyoda" would be a good name for the company. The numerologist said it would not be. He explained that "Toyota" would be a better name for the company. The family took his advice. As a result, millions of people drive "Toyota" and not "Toyoda" .
There are many other kinds of superstitions. There are superstitions about eating, sleeping, sneezing and itching(抓痒). There are superstitions about animals and holidays and horseshoes.
There are even superstitions about superstitions. Those superstitions will tell people how to reverse bad luck.
When the Japanese bump heads, they immediately bump heads again. According to a Japanese superstition, the first-bump means their parents will die, but the second bump "erases" the first bump
To reverse bad luck in general, people turn around three times, turn their pockets inside out,or put their hats on backwards.
In the United States, baseball players sometimes wear their caps backwards when their team is losing. It looks silly, but the baseball players do not mind if it helps them win the game.

阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。
When students first go to a library, they may be at a loss as to what to read of all the different subjects. Well, Bacon tells you to "look at weak places in your armor( ,~ qt )" , and shows you how to fill up the blanks in your knowledge. On the other hand, it is no good just trying to fill your mind with knowledge. Knowledge in itself is often useless. A mind filled with too much knowledge is like a room too tull of furniture; a man cannot walk about freely in it, and look out of the windows. It is much better to concentrate on a few subjects which interest you and to deal lightly with the others than to march heavily through the whole range ( ,~~ [~] ) of learning, like a silly tourist going through a museum and not missing a single object. If you try to master every subject you may become very wise, but you will be very lonely and you will probably lose all your friends. So you must learn to pick and choose, and you must also learn to look here and there in a library like a camel eating grass on the grass land. If you watch it eating, you will see that although he is supposed to be one of the most stupid animals in the world, he has at least one of the qualities ([~J~) of the cultured ( ~-{l~]~,J ) man, the power to pick and choose. A student looking for mental food in a library should take the camel as his model.

Good morning, dear friends. Welcome to our school.
Now please allow me to introduce some of our school rules to you here. As high school students, firstly, we are expected to wear the school badge and school uniform when at school. Secondly, it must be made clear that the class begins at 7:30 and ends at 4:30 and we should never be late for class or leave school before it is over. The school is a place for us to live and study in, so we must sweep the floor to keep it clean and tidy. Lastly, if you want to go to school by bike, you must have a bicycle-permit.
Thanks.
Read Selectively or Intensively
The passage gives us good advice that since it is impossible for one to read all kinds of books, we must learn to pick and choose the materials we read.
In fact, people have differem opiviens about reading. Some peopie think we should read electively while others think that we should read extensively. Those who hold the first opinion think that one's time and energy are limited and one can never read as many books as he wishes. In contrast, those who hold the second view think that to know the world from all perspectives one should absorb a variety of knowledge by reading extensively.
As to me, I agree with the former opinion. Admittedly, one can absorb knowledge by reading extensively, but it doesn't follow that one should read without discrimination. As one's time and one's energy are limited, one should devote his limited time and energy to reading relevant and beneficial books. Ifs a waste of time to read irrelevant books. Furthermore, some books are harmful to one's mind. If we don't read books selectively, we will be misled by harmful books.
