第三部分 阅读(共两节,满分40分)

阅读下列三篇短文,从每题所给的四个选现(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
( A )
“I’ve changed my mind. I wanted to have a telescope, but now I want my dad back.” Lucien Lawrence’s letter to Father Christmas written after his father had been knifed to death outside his school gate, must have touched every heart. Lucien went on to say that without his father he couldn’t see the stars in the sky. When those whom we love depart from us, we cannot see the stars for a while.
But Lucien, the stars are still there, and one day, when you are older and your tears have gone, you will see then again. And, in a strange way, I expect that you will find your father is there too, in your mind and in your heart. I find that my parents, long dead now, still figure in many of my dreams and that I think of them perhaps more than I ever did when they were alive. I still live to please them and I’m still surprised by their reactions. I remember that when I became a professor , I was so proud, or rather so pleased with myself, that I couldn’t wait to cable my parents. The reply was a long time in coming, but when it did, all mother said was, “I hope this means that now you will have more time for the children!” I haven’t forgotten. The values of my parents still live on.
It makes me pause and think about how I will live on in the hearts and minds of my children and of those for whom I care. Would I have been as ready as Philip Lawrence has been to face the aggressors, and to lay down my life for those in my care? How many people would want me back for Christmas? It’s a serious thought, one to give me pause.
I pray silently, sometimes, in the dead of night, that ancient cry of a poet “Deliver my soul from the sword, and my darling from the power of the dog.” Yet I know the death comes to us all, and sometimes comes suddenly. We must therefore plan to live forever, but live as if we will die tomorrow. We live on, in the lives of those we loved, and therefore we ought to have a care for what they will remember and what they will treasure. If more parents knew this in their hearts to be true, there might be fewer knives on our streets today.

One of the traditions which is now a necessary part of Christmas is that of Father Christmas, or Santa Claus. According to the modern legend, he is a magical figure who visits all the children of the world during the night before Christmas Day, leaving presents which they find the next morning. He flies through the night sky in a sledge pulled by reindeer, and enters houses by climbing down chimneys. This strange legend is based on the life of a man called Nicholas, but in fact we know very little about him. Historians think he was a Christian bishop(主教) in Turkey in about 285-350 A. D. One of the stories about him is that he helped three poor girls. No one would marry them because they were so poor. To provide them with money for their weddings, Nicholas secretly dropped some gold coins down the chimney of their house. After Nicholas died, he was made a saint(圣人) by the church. (The name Santa Claus thus comes from St Nicholas.) His feast day was celebrated in December, and parents started giving their children secret presents from St Nicholas. Over the years, this custom became part of our Christmas traditions.
Recently, a psychologist has claimed that Father Christmas is “the perfect fantasy” for children. According to Professor Anthony Clare, children love the character of Father Christmas because he is like an ideal father: he loves children and gives them presents, but he never criticizes them, is never angry, and children do not even need to thank him for the presents. Other writers, however, point out that Father Christmas can be a frightening character to some children. Jane Bidder says that some children are terrified of this fat, bearded old man. It can certainly confuse many children. As parents, we warn our children to be careful of strangers and never to let them into the house, and yet we tell children that a strange man will come into their bedroom at night! Some children can become very worried about this idea and fear that he is a kind of burglar.
Most children, however, understand from their parents and from the media that Father Christmas is basically a benign character, and look forward to his annual visit with joy and excitement.
46. The main point of the first paragraph is that ________.
A. Father Christmas is an important part of Christmas
B. the tradition of Father Christmas is a modern idea
C. Father Christmas is a magical figure who can fly
D. the legends about Father Christmas are not true
47. The writer mentions details such as Father Christmas’s sledge, the reindeer and the way he climbs down chimneys because he/she ____________.
A. wants to make it clear that these things are impossible
B. is describing the history of St Nicholas
C. wants everyone to believe that Father Christmas is real
D. is explaining the modern legend of Father Christmas
48. Why does the writer mention the story about St Nicholas helping three poor girls?
A. It shows us that historians know very little about him.
B. This story explains why parents give secret presents to children.
C. It supports the writer’s main point that Father Christmas is based on an untrue story.
D. This story explains why we celebrate Christmas in December.
49. In the last paragraph, the word “benign”means _________.
A. religious B. friendly C. frightening D. unreal
50. The best title for this passage would be __________.
A. Is Father Christmas Dangerous?
B. The True History of St Nicholas
C. The Legend of Santa Claus
D. The Traditions of Christmas
( C)
Parents should stop blaming themselves because there’s not a lot they can do about it. I mean the teenager (十几岁的孩子) problem. Whatever you do or however you choose to deal with it, at certain times a wonderful, reasonable and helpful child will turn into a terrible animal.
I’ve seen friends deal with it in all kinds of different ways. One strict mother insisted that her son, right from a child, should stand up whenever anyone entered the room, open doors and shake hands like a gentleman. I saw him last week when I called round. Sprawling himself (懒散地躺) on the sofa in full length, he made no attempt to turn off the loud TV he was watching as I walked in, and his greeting was no more than a quick glance at me. His mother was ashamed. “I don't know what to do with him these days,” she said. “He’s forgotten all the manners we taught him.”
He hasn't forgotten them. He' s just decided that he' s not going to use them. She confessed (坦白) that she would like to come up behind him and throw him down from the sofa onto the floor.
Another good friend of mine let her two daughters climb all over the furniture, reach across the table, stare at me and say, “I don’t like your dress; it’s ugly.” One of the daughters has recently been driven out of school. The other has left home.
“Where did we go wrong?” her parents are now very sad. Probably nowhere much. At least, no more than the rest of that unfortunate race, parents.
51. This text is most probably written by ______.
A. a specialist in teenager studies B. a headmaster of a middle school
C. a parent with teenage children D. a doctor for mental health problems
52. The underlined word “it” in the second paragraph refers to ______.
A. the change from good to bad that ' s seen in a child
B. die way that parents often blame themselves
C. the opinion that a child has of his parents
D. the advice that parents want their children to follow
53. The boy on the sofa would most probably be described as ______.
A. lazy B. quiet G. unusual D. rude
54. From the second example we can infer that the parents of the two daughters ______.
A. pay no attention to them B. are too busy to look after them
C. have come to hate them D. feel helpless to do much about them
55. What is the author' a opinion about the sudden change in teenage children?
A. Parents have no choice but to try to accept it.
B. Parents should pay still sore attention to the change.
C. Parents should work more closely with school teachers.
D. Parents are at fault for the change in their children.

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents' home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station(加油站)about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收款台), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.
I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend's. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.
I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.
Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I'd left the lights on all day, and the battery(电池)was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership - a shop selling cars - was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.
"Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?" I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said.
"Thank you" - two powerful words. They're easy to say and mean so much.

The torch of the Beijing Olympic Games has a very strong Chinese flavor, which conveys the message of a Green Olympics, a High-tech Olympics and the People's Olympics. The shape of the paper scroll and the lucky clouds graphic, express the idea of harmony. As we all know, the lucky clouds graphic is a symbol of Chinese culture and paper is one of the four great inventions in ancient China that was spread to the rest of the world along the ancient Silk Road. The Torch Relay of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games has set its theme as the ‘Journey of Harmony’ and the slogan ‘Light the Passion, Share the Dream’. The torch will be passed in all the five continents around the world and throughout China.
第二节 任务型写作(满分25分)
One Possible Version:
In this passage, the writer mainly tells us two of his experiences of being helped by strangers. After he wrote them thank-you notes, he realized that saying thank you to others meant so much.
I have a similar experience. Once when I was about to go home after school, it was raining so heavily that I had to wait for the rain to stop. But after half an hour it was still raining. Seeing this, the guard at the gate offered to lend me his umbrella. I accepted at once. Thanks to his help, I got home on time without getting wet. The next morning, when I returned the umbrella to the guard, I said thank you to him and left him a note expressing my gratitute sincerely. To my surprise, he said no one had ever written him to say thank you, and it meant a lot to him.
So in my opinion, saying thank you to others is not only easy but also meaningful to the sayer and the receiver!

Text 1
M: Good afternoon. I believe this house is for sale.
W: That’s right.
M: May I have a look at it, please?
W: Yes, of course. Let me show you around it.
M: How long have you lived here?
W: I’ve lived here since my son was born, and he’s 30.
M: Oh, that’s quite a long time. Then why do you want to sell it?
W: I’ve just retired. I want to buy a small house in the country. It’s quiet and the air is fresh there.
M: How much do you want for it?
W: $ 150,000.
M: That’s a lot of money. Can you bring it down?
W: I’m sorry but I think it’s worth the price.
M: Well, I like the house but I can’t decide yet. My wife must see it first.
W: Women always have the last word.
Text 2
W: What did you do today?
M: First we had a swim and then we went to Mrs. Hill’s home and helped her cook some food for a picnic.
W: Is Mrs. Hill a good cook?
M: Yes, she is a good cook and she is also very friendly. We didn’t feel like guests. We felt like members of the family.
W: Where did you have your picnic?
M: Oh, that was fun. We went out in a boat to an island.
W: Oh, you had your picnic on an island, did you?
M: That’s right. It was great. The sun was hot and the water was warm. What a day!
W: It sounds like a good day. Did everyone enjoy it, too?

The national weather map shows sunny weather from New York to Florida. But there are showers and storms from the Ohio River all the way south to the southern coast. By far the worst of the storms have been in and around Texas. Some Texas stations have reported up to fifteen inches of rain in a twenty-four hour period with high winds and heavy storms. Heavy snow was reported in the Rocky Mountains district with record cold temperatures. As much as a foot of snow has fallen in some of the mountain stations. However, temperatures in Arizona and the desert southwest went over the thirty-nine-degree mark again today under bright, sunny skies.

W: Are you happy to work in the shipping department, Paul?
M: To tell you the truth, I’m sorry that I have changed my job and have come to the shipping department. I wish I hadn’t done it.
W: Really? Why?
M: Because the work is tiring and the people in that section are strange.
W: That’s too bad! I’m sorry to hear that. What do you plan to do?
M: Well, I hope the head office is willing to take me back.
W: Is that likely?
M: I don’t know.
W: Well, I hope things work out for you.
M: Thanks.

If you ask some people“How did you learn English so well?”You may get a surprising answer:“In my sleep!”These are people who have taken part in one of recent experiments to test learn-while-you-sleep methods.
Scientists say that this sleep-study method speeds language learning greatly. In one experiment, ten lessons were broadcast over the radio. Each lesson lasted 12 hours from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. The first three hours of English grammar and new words were given with the student awake. At 11 p.m. light music was broadcast to send the student to sleep and for the next 3 hours the radio whispered the lesson again into his sleeping ears. At 2 a.m. a sharp noise was sent over the radio to wake the sleeping student up for a few minutes to review the lesson. Then soft songs sent him back to rest again while the radio went on. At 5 o’clock the noise woke him up and he had to go through the lesson again for three hours before breakfast.

W:Good morning. Are you enjoying your stay at our hotel?
M: I’m afraid not. The room you gave me is too noisy. It faces a busy street and the traffic is so loud that I can’t sleep
W: Perhaps you could try closing the window.
M: I have closed the window. It doesn’t help. I want another room
W: I ‘m sorry, but that’s not possible. You see, there are no other room available .
M: what? Are you saying that the hotel is full? That’s impossible, I haven’t seen many other guests.
W: No, the hotel isn’t full , but the other rooms are more expensive.
M: Look, when I booked this room, you didn’t say anything about the noise. Why didn’t you tell me the truth ?
W: well…..
M: And the bed is not comfortable! You didn’t say anything about that, either.
W: you see, the rooms….
M: Could you at least do something about my shower? There is not hot water.
W: I’m sorry, but in your room ,there’s only hot water between 8:00pm and 11:00 pm
