III 阅读(共两节,满分40分)
第一节:阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 A
Why are so many people so afraid of failure? Quite simply because no one tells us how to fail so that failure becomes an experience that will lead to growth. We forget that failure is part of the human condition and that every person has the right to fail.
Most parents work hard at either preventing failure or protecting their children from the knowledge that they have failed. One way is to lower standards. A mother describes her child's
hastily made table as "Perfect!" even though it doesn't stand still. Another way is to shift (转移)
blame. If John fails science, his teacher is unfair or stupid.
The trouble with failure prevention is that they leave a child unequipped for life in the real world. The young need to learn that no one can be best at everything, no one can win all the time and that it's possible to enjoy a game even when you don't win. A child who's not invited to a birthday party, who doesn't make the honor roll on the baseball team, feels terrible, of course. But
parents should not offer a quick comfort, prize or say "It doesn't matter." Because it does. The young should be allowed to experience disappointment and be helped to master it.
Failure is never pleasurable. It hurts grown-ups and children alike. But it can make a positive contribution to your life once you learn to use it. Step one is to ask "Why did I fail?"
Don't blame someone else. Ask yourself what you did wrong, how you can improve. If someone else can help, don't be shy about inquiring. Success, which encourages repetition of old behavior, is not nearly as good a teacher as failure. You can learn from a bad party how to give a good one, from an ill-chosen first house what to look for in a second. Even a failure that seems definitive (决定性的) can prompt fresh thinking, a change of direction. After twelve years of studying ballet, a friend of mine applied for a professional company. She was turned down. "Would further training help?" she asked. The ballet master shook his head. "You will never be a dancer", he said, "you haven't the body for it."
In such cases, the way to use failure is to take stock (鉴定,判断) bravely asking. "What have I left? What else can I do?!' My friend put away her shoes and moved into dance treatment center, a field where she's both able and useful. Failure frees one to take risks because there’s less
to lose. Often there is recovery of energy--a way to find new possibilities.

Beauty has always been regarded as something praiseworthy. Almost everyone thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and have more respectable jobs. Personal advisors give them better advice for finding jobs. Even judges are sorer on attractive defendants (被告). But in the executive (主管的) circle, beauty can become a liability.
While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder, it is harmful to a woman.
Handsome male executives were considered as having more honesty than plainer men; effort and ability were thought to lead to their success.
Attractive female executives were considered to have less honesty than unattractive ones; their success was connected not with ability but with factors such as luck.
All unattractive women executives were thought to have more honesty and to be more capable than the attractive female executives. Interestingly, though, the rise of the unattractive overnight successes was connected more to personal relationships and less to ability than that of the attractive overnight successes.
Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman is considered to be
more feminine (女性的) and an attractive man more manly than the less attractive ones. Thus, an attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally manly position appears to lack the "manly" qualities required.
This is true even in politics. "When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men
and women differently," says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates. She asked 125 undergraduate students to rank two groups
of photographs, one of men and one of women, in order of attractiveness. The students were told the photographs were of candidates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again, in the order they would vote for them.
The results showed that attractive males completely defeated unattractive men, but women
who had ranked most attractive unchangeably received the fewest votes.
46.The word "liability" most probably means_________ .
A. disadvantage B. advantage C. misfortune D. trouble
47. In traditionally female jobs, attractiveness
A. makes women look more honest and capable
B. strengthens the feminine qualities required
C. is of great importance to women
D. often enables women to succeed quickly
48.Bowman's experiment shows that when it comes to politics, attractiveness________ .
A. turns out to be a disadvantage to men
B. is more of a disadvantage than an advantage to women
C. affects men and women alike
D. has as little effect on men as on women
49.It can be inferred from the passage that people's views on beauty are often_________ .
A. practical B. supportive C. old-fashioned D. one-sided
50. The author writes this passage to_________ .
A. give advice to job-seekers who are attractive
B. discuss the disadvantages of being attractive
C. demand equal rights for women
D. state the importance of appearance

For poets, bird song is a beautiful expression of nature in full bloom. But for scientists, the chirps of birds are far more meaningful than just pretty sounds. Latest studies show the way that young birds learning to sing is similar to that of a human baby learning to speak.
"The question we're trying to answer is how a young bird learns its song," says Professor Michale Fee of MIT. Bird's creative, trial-and-error type of learning provides an ideal model for studying similar processes in humans. An example is how a baby's babble turns into the recognizable syllables of mama and papa.
Also the part of the brain that is involved in birdsong is very similar to that of a human. So birds may have something to teach us about our own brains, Fee said.
The study shows that young birds like to create new and imperfect songs. Gradually, the youngsters' songs become less different and more similar to the sound of their parents. Scientists disabled part of a young finch's brain and stopped the learning in midstream. The bird still sings. But never learns the right songs.
Fee's team found that the part of the brain involved is called the anterior forebrain pathway,
which produces random bursts that make the young bird make new sounds and compared it with
that of their parents. They also find out that once a bird is old enough that part of the brain will be
less active.
The study does not enable us to really understand the meaning of bird language. But Fee believes it will eventually be applied to human brain diseases, such as Parkinson's disease.
5l. The subject discussed in the passage is_________ .
A. bird language B. how birds learn songs
C. human brain diseases D. how birds create new songs
52. According to the scientists, _________ plays the most significant role in the learning process of young birds.
A. the part of brain called anterior forebrain pathway
B. the trial-and-error type of learning
C. the example of their parents
D. the creation of new and imperfect songs
53. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. Birds learn to sing songs in a trial-and-error fashion.
B. The study of bird song will enable us to understand bird language.
C. The study of bird song might help find cure for human brain diseases.
D. The chirps of young birds can be imperfect but creative.
54. It can be inferred from the story that________ .
A. young birds are always making meaningless sounds
B. if a bird had its anterior forebrain pathway damaged, it can never sing
C. a bird can't live happily without its anterior forebrain pathway
D. as a bird grows older, it may not learn new songs as quickly
55. Parkinson's disease is mentioned here to________ .
A. show how our brain works B. give an example of human brain disease
C. explain how serious brain disease can be
D. prove that human brain diseases are curable

Young people and their parents don't understand each other. The world keeps changing. It has
always kept changing. During the second century a wise mail said: "Bury me on my face because
in a little while everything will be turned upside down." There has always been a gap between
generations, but more people talk about it now. Old Mr. Ellis thinks he understands what has
happened:
"When I was a boy, I thought the world was a beautiful place. My life was pleasant. But when t was older, I learned about people who were treated badly, people who didn't have enough
to eat. I wanted to help them, and I married a girl who wanted to help them, too. We went to
meetings and talked a lot, but it didn't seem to make much difference."
“Our children grew up in a world at war. They didn't know when the fighting would stop. They wanted their children to have nice clothes and toys. They didn't want to think about the future. They thought nothing could be done about it."

第二节 One possible version:
The topic of "generation gap" is not new. People have long been familiar with it, and even more people talk about it at present.
Mr. Ellis knows about this problem well, and has tried his best to belt) those old people who were not well treated at home. Still he thinks what he and his wife did doesn't help much. Why?
In my opinion, we should find out the cause of generation gap. Parents and their children grew up from two different worlds, so what they like, think about, and how they behave are different, even contradict each other.
Due to their opposite thinking and behavior, both sides sometimes cannot get on well with each other. Some young people will ill-treat the elderly, and some parents will misunderstand their children. To deal with such situation, mutual understanding is necessary. Both sides must keep in touch with each other more and show concern and understanding to the other side more.
