BEIT FAJAR,West Bank—Of Khalil Taqataqah’s nine children, 20-year-old Andaleeb was his favourite. She was up early on Friday, made him tea and then slipped unnoticed out of the modest family home in this West Bank village.
In central Jerusalem later in the day, Andaleeb— Arabic for nightingale (夜莺)— ended her life the way dozens of other Palestinians have before: She blew herself up, killing herself and six Israelis and injured scores more.
Andaleeb’s parents, sisters, best friends and close relatives painted a picture of a quiet and soft-spoken woman who had not given a hint of her intentions.
But Andaleeb spoke of her plan in a video taken before Friday’s bombing and shown on Saturday on the Qatar-based Arab satellite TV channel Al-Jazeera.
“I’ve chosen to say with my body what Arabs leaders have failed to say," said Andaleeb, echoing a frequent complaint by Palestinians that Arab nations are not doing enough against Israel.
“My body is a barrel(筒) of gunpowder that burns the enemy," she said, reading from a piece of paper.
“She was like any other girl of her age," said best friend and coworker Laila Mahmoud.“She spoke about love and marriage.I am so sad she’s gone. It’s the shock of my life," said Mahmoud.
A school dropout, Andaleeb had supported her family from a job at a Palestinian-owned textile factory in the nearby town of Beit Jala. She had not reported for work for nearly three weeks because of repeated closures of West Bank roads by the Israeli army, according to her relatives.
“Anyone in her place would have snapped (失去控制).It’s her destiny(使命) and it’s a source of pride and glory for us that she did what she did," said her aunt,Jameela Taqataqah as she held back tears.
Andaleeb, the third Palestinian woman to commit a suicide(自杀) murder this year, wore blue jeans and a matching checkered flannel shirt when she had a photograph taken two months ago.
Andaleeb, her parents’ fourth child, looked more 15 than 20 in the photograph.
Andaleeb’s parents said they learned of their daughter’s death early this morning when Israeli troops arrived and asked everyone to step out while they searched the house.
They arrested one of her brothers and a male cousin who lives next door, the parents said.

Jakarta-About 20 bombs exploded outside churches in Jakarta and five other Indonesian cities and towns, killing at least 14 people and injuring 47, said National Police Chief Gen Suroyo Bimantoro on Sunday.
Sunday’s attacks follow a rise in Muslim extremism(穆斯林极端主义) throughout the country. The heaviest violence (暴力行为) has been in the Maluku islands in Indonesia’s east, where about 5,000 people of both Christian(天主教) and Muslim beliefs have been killed over the past two years. Indonesia is the world’s largest Muslim country with 90 percent of its 210 million people, followers of Islam.
Christians make up less than 10 percent of Indonesia’s 210 million people. Many are from the Chinese minority, which has been attacked by Muslim groups during past civil unrest. Sunday’ bombings were the latest in a series to rock the capital. The worst this year came in September, when a car bomb and the following fire killed 15 people in a park lot at Jakarta’s Stock Exchange. In August, two people were killed when a car bomb blew up outside the Philippine ambassador’s大使) home.
The police made arrest(逮捕) after those attacks and several smaller explosions, but have brought no formal(正式的) charges. Most of the arrested have been set free.

Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there’s a big difference between “being a writer” and writing. In most cases these people are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. “You’ve got to want to write,” I say to them, “not want to be a writer.”
The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose wish is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in the U.S. Coast Guard to become a freelance writer(自由撰稿者), I had no hope at all. What I did have was a friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn’t even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used typewriter and felt like a real writer.
After a year or so, however, I still hadn’t got a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn’t going to be one of those people who die wondering. What if I would keep putting my dream to the test even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the Shadow land of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.
64. The writer wrote the passage to ________.
A. warn young people of the hardships that a successful writer has to experience
B. advise young people to give up their ideas of becoming a professional writer

A. who think too much of the dark side of life

C. who think a lot without making a decision
D. who are full of imaginations even upon death

Jacksonville, Florida, Nov.10 —A 14-year-old boy was arrested today after the rotten body of an 8-year-old girl who was his neighbor was found hidden in his bedroom. She had been stabbed(用刀刺) and beaten.
The boy, Joshua Earl Patrick Philips, admitted and was charged with murder in the death of the girl,Maddie Clifton, who disappeared on Nov.3,Sheriff Nat Glover said.
Joshua, who has no criminal record, would not be eligible(够条件的) for the death punishment because of his age.Detectives recovered a knife and a baseball bat believed to be the weapons used to kill the girl, the Sheriff said.
The girl had been stabbed at least nine times and was struck in the head,Sheriff Glover said at a news conference. The authorities did not say whether she had been attacked sexually, or did they give motive for the attack.
The boy’s mother, Melissa Philips, grew suspicious after the police searched her home on Monday and detected an odor (smell),the Sheriff said. This morning she pulled aside the frame of the bed, saw a child’s feet and called an officer,he said.
Maddie’s body was found under a sheet of wood supporting the frame of the water bed, which was filled, Sheriff Glover said, adding,“He put her under the bed and taped her up in it."
Investigators believe the third-grader was killed in the boy’s house shortly after she disappeared last Tuesday, touching off a widespread search.
On Friday, Maddie’s parents, Steve and Sheila Clifton, made an earnest request for her return.
The boy’s house, like others in the neighborhood, had been searched three times. During the third search on Monday, he mother had at first said she thought the odor came from family pets.
Hundreds of volunteers had distributed thousands of leaflets with Maddie’s picture since she disappeared that evening, about 30 minutes after she went out to play with friends.
The girl’s house is one of the well-kept, single-family homes in the older working class of Jacksonville. Yellow ribbons(丝带) still hung from the trees this morning.

A letter to Edward, a columnist(报刊专栏作家)
Dear Mr Expert:
I grew up in an unhappy and abusive home. I always Promised myself that I’d get out as soon as possible. Now, at age 20,I have a good job and a nice house, and I’m really proud of the independence I’ve achieved.
Here’s the problem: several of my friends who still live with their parents wish they had places like mine — so much so that they make mine theirs.
It started out with a couple of them spending the weekends with me. But now they seem to take it for granted that they can shou up any time they like. They bring boyfriends over, talk on the phone and stay out forever.
I enjoy having my friends here sometimes— it makes the place feel comfortable and warm— but this is my home, not a party house. I was old enough to move out on my own, so why can’t I seem to ask my friends to respect my privacy(隐私)
Joan
Edward’s reply to Joan
Dear Joan:
If your family didn’t pay attention to your needs when you were a child, you probably have trouble letting others know your needs now.
And if you’ve gathesed yourfriends around you to rebuild a happy family atmosphere(气氛),you may fear that saying no will bring back the kind of conflict you grew up with— or destroy the nice atmosphere you now enjoy. You need to understand that in true friendship it’s okay to put your own needs first from time to time.

21—25 DDBCA 26—30 CBCCD 31—35 BCCDB
次”时用 “the +序数词+time”。
The first time we’ll send you with an experienced reporter.
When you plough the soil, plough deeply the first time and less deeply the second time.
He cast it a second time and drew in an old basket full of sand.
She covered her face with hands.
By sunset we had covered thirty miles.
I’m covering Jane while she’s on leave.
The CCTV will cover all the major games of the tournament.
30. information是不可数名词,不可使用不定冠词,排除A项;依据“be +of +抽象名词”排除B、C项。 He is a man of ability. (= He is an able man.)
be sure意为:“对…
32. 本句应该使用肯定句,否则就会出现逻辑错误;so as to do sth / in order to do sth的否定式为so as not to do sth / in order not to do sth。故选C。
34. so +adj. / adv. + that(如此…
36—40 CCACB 41—45 CBDD A 46—50 ADBCA 51—55 BDCBD
36. 从下文my dad persuaded me to go into law可知作者从事的是法律工作,应该是一个lawyer(律师)。
42. in意为“在……
43. D in return 作为回报;in case 以防万一;by turns 轮流,依次;by chance 碰巧。
44. follow the principle
46. take up time 占据时间;make up编造,组成;pick up 捡起,接收(节目),接人等;keep up 继续,维持。
47. 从stay in school or leave to work on my magazine可知,校长让我作出一个选择(choice)。
53. as it turned out 结果是,正如结果那样,it 代替后面的那句话。
54. 前文已提到I started a magazine。
55. 从本句的句式结构看,使用了the same way,要选的词与bring up 同义,故选raise (抚养,养育)。
56—60 CDABA 61—65 BCAAD 66—70 BCDAC 71—75 ABCBC
文章第二段容易构成误导:the way dozens of other Palestinians have before.
B项中used to 和D项中all of them 与文中事实不符。
65. 从For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose wish is never rewarded.
What if 可以理解为是What would have happened if I hadn’t given up 的省略。
67. “This morning she pulled aside the frame of the bed, saw a child’s feet and called an officer,he said.”
