China’s forest industry took on an exciting step forward in 1996, the first year of the ninth five-year plan, by planting 4.9 million hectares of forest.
This brought the amount of forested area to more than 20 million hectares, an obvious improvement in China’s ecology(生态环境). Part of this was the three North Shelter Belt System, the largest ecological project in the world, which finished its second stage in 1996.
The 18.000 km Coastal Shelter Belt System has been a great help to the fight against strong winds. And four new large Shelter Belt System projects in seriously eroded(腐蚀的), ecologically unsound areas were started in 1996, covering more than 60 percent of the country’s land surface, most of which in windy and dusty areas.
There are 41 new forest parks set up, bringing the total figure to 790.
