Andrew Baker is the CEO(Chief Executive Officer) of Castle Computer Corporation, a successful computer company. He is well known in the computer field as a brilliant and creative executive, but he is also known as a disorganized and last minute-type person, perhaps because he is a procrastinator(拖延者). As a result, company employees are always in a state of confusion and instability, and deadlines for production schedules are almost never met. The fourth-quarter earning statement has just come out, and profits are way down.
Deborah Jackson, who has been Mr. Baker’s executive assistant for one year, recently attended a two-day time management workshop. She had hoped to discuss the comcepts of effective time management with Mr. Baker, but when she brought up the subject, he laughed and said time management was the least of his problems. He was working on a plan for test-marketing the new Castle laptop computer, which Marcia Lee, the Marketing and Sales Vice President, had asked him to revise. In addition, he was redesigning the new laser printer that the Research and Development Division had just developed, and solving a personnel problem that the Director of Human resources and Administration had brought to him.
Deborah knows that Mr. Baker, who has been with the company since its founding, likes to keep an eye on every department and stay in daily contact with all his division managers. However, she can see the results of Mr. Baker’s “micromanagement” style and poor time management. In fact, she is considering asking for a meeting with the Chief Operating Officer of Castle Computer Corporation, Harry Webb, to voice her concerns about the future of the company under Mr. Baker’s leadership. Although Deborah has a great deal of respect for Mr. Baker, she is completely worn out from her daily struggle to keep him on schedule. If only Mr Baker would delegate some of his responsibilities and set priorities. In Deborah’s eyes, Caltle Computer Corporation is being under-led and overmanaged.

NASDAQ, acronym for the National Association of Securities Dealers automated Quotation system, is one of the largest markets in the world for the trading of stocks. The number of companies listed on NASDAQ is more than that on any of the other stock exchange in the United States, including the New York Stock Exchange(NYSE) and the American Stock Exchange (AMSE). The majority of companies listed on NASDAQ are smaller than most of those on the NYSE and AMEX. NASDAQ has become known as the home of new technology companies, particularly computer and computer-related businesses. Trading on NASDAQ is started by stock brokers(经纪人) acting on behalf of their clients. The brokers negotiate with market makers who concentrate on trading specific stocks to reach a price for the stock.
Unlike other stock exchange, NASDAQ has no central location where trading takes place. Instead, its market makers are located all over the country and make trades by telephone and via the Internet. Because brokers and market makers trade stocks directly instead of on the floor of a stock exchange, NASDAQ is called an over-the-counter market. The term over-the –counter refers to the direct nature of the trading, as in a store where goods are handed over a counter.
Since its inception(开市) in 1971, the NASDAQ Stock Market has been the innovator(创新者). As the world’s first electronic stock market, NASDAQ long ago set a precedent(先例) for technological trading innovation that is unrivaled. Now ready to become the world’s first truly global market, the NASDAQ Stock Market is the market of choice for business industry leaders worldwide. By providing an efficient environment for raising capital NASDAQ has helped thousands of companies achieve their desired growth and successfully make the leap into public ownership.

80.____________
For those of us who lead busy lives, it’s very tempting to take a short cut to looking good. Why bother to keep fit and have a balanced diet when you can look good the easy way But before you decide that looking after yourself is all too much effort, think again.
81.___________
There’s nothing like a suntan to make you feel good. Spend all day doing nothing on a beautiful beach and you’ll look better at the end of it. A light tan will make you look younger and healthier, but there is increasing evidence that sunbathing and using sunbeds are directly linked to skin cancer. In the long run, it also ages the skin. If you want a tan, you may do beeter getting it out a bottle.
82.__________
If you want to change the color of your hair, why not just do it A quick visit to the hairdresser can make you sunnier, more attractive and improve your self-image a great deal. The problem is how long it will last. When the dark roots start to show again, it’s back to the salon. One visits too often and you can seriously damage your hair. In the end there is a danger that it will even fall out.
83.__________
You may not think that a tattoo(文身) would improve your appearance, but it’s certainly fashionable, and for many people that’s the same thing. A little red rose on your shoulder can seem like a good idea at that time, but how do you get rid of it later Worse still, there’s very real danger of getting a serious disease such as HIV or hepatitis(肝炎) from dirty needles if you go to an unqualified tattoo artist.
84.__________
The bad news is that if you want to look good and stay looking good, you will have to accept the facts. A hectic(发热) life style is no excuse. For the face, there’s nothing better than a good night’s sleep, because it is at night that the skin repairs itself. For the rest of your body, make sure you have a good diet and keep active. That’s all there is to it. Sorry! No one said it would be fun.

Nowadays, more and more adults and young people go to evening school to improve themselves. The idea of permanent education is popular with people both at work and at school, even those who are retired.
There are a few reasons for this social phenomenon. Firstly, more practical knowledge, such as a good command of a foreign language and computer skills, will provide people with better and wide job opportunities. For adults, especially for those who are at present laid down from their work, they will be well prepared when they return to the job market. For young parents, they can tutor their children after they gain new knowledge.
There is a Chinese old saying: Life is short and art is long. Permanent education is necessary in our society.

Santos agonized(苦恼) for months. Finally, she approached the company’s human resources department for help. Both she and the supervisor were called into a private meeting to work things out. Santos said she was willing to learn but she had to have clear instructions. She also needed to know that she wasn’t going to be humiliated(羞辱) in front of her colleagues if there were problems. The supervisor agreed to Santos’s requests and from that day, they worked together without problems.

One picture in the Wonder Book of Knowledge I had as a little boy showed a man reading a book while floating in the Dead Sea. What a miracle! How would it feel to lie back in water so thick with salt that it was impossible to sink
Fed by the Jordan River and smaller streams, the Dead Sea is the lowest point on the earth’s surface, and its water is ten times saltier than the Mediterranean(地中海). With evaporation(蒸发) its only outlet, salt and other minerals become super-concentrated.
Earlier this year, I drove down the long, steep hill to realise my dream. The shoreline was a broad area of bare salt-mud, but the water edge was far out of sight. Had somebody pulled the Dead Sea’s plug I wondered. Eli Dror, an Israeli official, explained the problem: “The Dead Sea is drying up. Every year, the surface drops about one metre, and as the water level falls, shallow areas are left high and dry.”
Over the last half-century, the five neighbouring countries have collectively diverted(使......转向) nearly all the water flowing into the Dead Sea to meet human and agricultural needs. Result: the Dead Sea is being emptied.
With population in the region set to double at least in the next 50 years, there is little hope of restoring the water being diverted for human consumption. No country has a drop to spare for the Dead Sea, where they know it will just evaporate. To dream of opening the dams and restoring natural balance is plainly unrealistic.
Yet one ambitious high-tech dream may turn out to be not only the salvation(拯救) of the Dead Sea but also a ticket to peace around its shores. The “Red-Dead” is a proposed $5 billion project to bring sea water some 240 kilometres by pipeline and canal from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea. The Red-Dead may be the only solution, but even if the project is carried out successfully, the Dead Sea will be 10 to 20 metres lower than now and two thirds of its current size.
Whatever the future holds, the Dead Sea’s magical mix of sun, mud, sea and salt will surely survive. Many might complain that the Dead Sea is half empty—but for me the Dead Sea will always be half full.
69. Which is the best title for the passage
A. Dead Sea—Miracle of the World B. Save the environment of the Dead Sea
C. Slow Shrinking of the Dead Sea D. Why Is the Dead Sea So Salty
70. The shrinking of the Dead Sea is mainly caused by ____ according to the passage.
A. a severe reduction of the water flowing into the sea
B. rapid evaporation of the water in the Dead Sea area
C. the increasing quantity of water drawn from the sea
D. very low annual rainfall in the Dead Sea Area
71. Which of the following is NOT right according to the passage
A. With no outlet to any ocean, the Dead Sea has become by evaporation the saltiest on earth.
B. Burdened with the growing population, the neighbouring countries have almost cut off the sources of the Dead Sea.
C. No country in the area will consider diverting less water from the Jordan River.
D. The Red-Dead Project has not only brought water to the Dead Sea, but peace to the area as well.
72. Which of the following statements will the author approve of
A. If the Dead Sea dried up, great natural disasters would happen in the region.
B. The Dead Sea will not survive no matter what people do to save it.
C. The five neighbouring countries should stop diverting water from the Jordan River.
D. Though the Dead Sea is shrinking gradually, it will not die.
(C)
Counting the world's population may seem a bit like counting the stars in the sky, but not if you know how to go about it the right way. And there are as many ways to do it as there are countries, the United Nations recently discovered at a four-day conference attended by number-happy scientists from 55 countries. The idea was to see how countries are using technology to make the census(人口普查)-taking exercises more manageable and accurate.
The software technology leader of South East Asia, Singapore, carries out its census the cool way. It puts questionnaires(问卷) on the Internet. For its census in 2000, Brazil used palm top computers and mobile phones to get data from the remotest parts of the Amazon. India for its 2001 census, used the television medium to spread the message of the census and its importance.
Turkey, on the other hand, has simpler methods to ensure that everyone is counted: the army sets up roadblocks all over the country! And in the former Soviet Republic of Kyrgyzstan, people coming forward to be counted get a lottery ticket(彩票), with the winner getting an apartment for free, as the prize…
In 1995, the UN started an extremely huge 10-year program, to analyze the census systems of various countries and see how they could be made more efficient, so that even if technologies change, the basic efficiency of the census method remained.
One of the interesting facts that came to light at the conference was that while people in developing countries are more willing to get themselves counted, citizens of developed countries, such as the USA, do not take to "government-sponsored visits".
73. At the conference, scientists from 55 countries ____.
A. competed for the best way of census-taking B. developed the technology of census system
C. shared various ways of census-taking D. worked out the world population

Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.
Steps to a Perfect Holiday
80.
When you sit down to plan your holiday, the first step is to make sure you’re very clear about what you want to get out of it. Do you want an immersion in culture, or do you want to simply recharge your body batteries Do you want to read a sack of novels or tango till dawn Do you want extensive family bonding time or time for every member of the family to try things on their own
81.
Get a good guidebook or two and read up on the culture, history and attractions of the destination. Surf the Internet for more information; read local publications online. The more you know, the better you’ll be able to appreciate the place and choose from the many options it presents. And the better you’ll understand all the new things—sights, issues, people, rituals—you encounter.
82.
Take clothes that are adaptable and cram everything you need into a carry-on bag if you can. Your heart will soar when you get to skip a line at check-in—and when you arrive and breeze by passengers waiting for their bags.
83.
Remember that the best moments of just about any trip are the unexpected ones. Leave plenty of time to visit an irresistible shop, have a long chat with an old-timer at a café or go on an impromptu day trip with new-found friends to a secret local spot.
84.
Eat where the locals eat; shop where they shop. Ask the hotel clerk for recommendations. On my last trip to Hawaii, I heard about a neighbourhood hula festival from a hotel clerk. I feasted on homemade bread and fried chicken, and watched a heart-warming hula. It’s one of my most treasured memories. Open yourself up to the locals and you’ll find your most precious souvenirs.

When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.
Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.
Read for life, all your life. Nothing ever invented provides such food for the mind, such infinite reward for time spent, as a good book. Read to your heart’s content. Let one book lead to another. They nearly always do.
Take up a great author and read everything he or she has written. Read about places you’ve never been: sailing down the Mississippi with Huckleberry Finn, or wandering in the streets in St Petersburg with Anna Karenina. Read books that changed history: Tom Paine’s Common Sense, Harriet Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring.
Read those books you know you’re supposed to have read and imagined as dry or uninteresting. A classic may be defined as a book that stays long in print, and a book stays long in print only because it’s outstanding. Why exclude the outstanding from your experience And when you read a book you love—a book you feel has enlarged the experience of being alive, a book that “lights the fire”—then spread the word.
To carry a book with you wherever you go is old advice and good advice. John Adams urged his son John Quincy to carry a volume of poetry. “You will never be alone,” he said, “with a poet in your pocket.”
Questions:
11. What does the speaker compare books to
12. What does the speaker define a classic as
13. Who wrote the book Uncle Tom’s Cabin
Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.
Trees are pretty important to the environment. So it makes sense that if you chop down too many of these and don't replace them you're going to run into all sorts of problems.
The Philippines knows all about that. It's lost more than two thirds of its forest area in less than a hundred years. Add heavy rain to that and this is what can happen. In 2003, a sudden fall of earth down a hill, or we call a landslide, killed around two hundred people. Recently another landslide buried an entire village in mud. It's believed more than one thousand people died. The cause of this landslide is still being debated. Most say it was the heavy rainfall. I mean we're talking about two thousand millimetres of rain in ten days - that's quite a downpour. Some say a minor earthquake played a part, while others blame the removal of trees. Of course it could be a combination of all those things.
While the Philippines banned chopping down trees for several years, it started again in 2005.
Partly because the Philippines’ population is growing at a rapid rate, so the land is needed for other reasons, things like housing and farming.
So how do you support the increasing population without ruining the environment
Grow more plantations—forests where trees are for commercial use, so native forests aren't destroyed. Better get busy.
Questions:
14. How many people died in the 2003 landslide
15. What is not blamed for the cause of the recent landslide in the Philippines
16. What does the speaker suggest in order to support the population without ruining the environment
