When a consumer finds that one item that she or he bought is faulty or in some way doesn’t live up to the manufacturer’s claim for it, the first step is to present the warranty, or any other records which might help, at the store of purchase. In most cases, this action will produce results. However, if it doesn’t, there are various means the consumer may use to gain satisfaction.
A simple and common method used by many consumers is to complain directly to the store manager. In general, the “higher up” the consumer take his or her complaint, the faster he or she can expect it to be settled. In such a case, it is usually settled in the consumer’s favor, assuming he or she has a just claim.
Consumer should complain in person whenever possible, but if they can not get to the place of purchases, it is acceptable to phone or write the complaint in a letter.
Complaining is usually mostly effective when it is done politely and firmly, and especially when the consumer can demonstrate what is wrong with the item in question. If this cannot be done, the consumer will succeed best by presenting specific information as to what is wrong, rather than by making general statements. For example, “The left speaker doesn’t work at all and the sound coming out of the right one is unclear” is better than “this stereo doesn’t work”.
The store manager may advise the consumer to write to the manufacturer. If so, the consumer should do this, stating the complaint as politely and as firmly as possible. But if a polite complaint doesn’t achieve the desired result, the consumer can go a step further. She or he can threaten to take the seller to court or report the seller to a private or public organization responsible for protecting consumers’ rights.
36. If a consumer wants a quick settlement of his or her problem, it is better to complain to_____________.
A. a shop assistant. B. the store manager.
C. the manufacturer. D. a public organization.
37. The most effective complaint can be made by _____________.
A. explaining exactly what is wrong with the item.
B. showing the faulty item to the manufacturer.
C. saying firmly that the item is of poor quality.
D. asking politely to change the item.
38. The phrase “live up to” (in Para. 1) means____________.
A. meet the standard of B. realize the purpose of
C. fulfill the demands of D. keep the promise of.
39. The passage tells us _____________.
A how to settle a consumer’s complaint about a faulty item.
B.how to make an effective complaint about a faulty item.
C. how to avoid buying a faulty item.
D. how to deal with complaints from consumers.

Listening to music while you drive can improve your speed and ability to get away from accidents, according to Australian psychologists (心理学家).But turning your car radio up to full volume could probably make you end up in an accident. The performance of difficult tasks can be affected if people are subjected to loud noise. The experience of pulling up at traffic lights alongside cars with loud music made some psychologists in the University of Sydney look into whether loud music has something to do with driving.
The psychologists invited 60 men and women aged between 20 and 28 as subjects and tested them on almost the same driving tasks under three noise conditions:silence, rock music played at a gentle 55 decibels (分贝), and the same music at 85 decibels.
For l0 minutes the subjects sat in front of a screen operating a simple machine like a car. They had to track a moving disk on screen, respond to traffic signals changing color, and brake (刹车) in response to arrows that appeared without warning.
On the tracking task, there was no difference in performance under the three noise conditions. But under both the loud and quiet music conditions, the performers “braked” at a red light about 50 milliseconds sooner than they did when there was no rock music at all. That could mean a reduction in braking distance of a couple of meters actually, the difference between life and death for a pedestrian(行人).
When it came to the arrows that appeared across the visual field, the psychologists found that when the music was quiet, people responded faster to objects in their central field of sight by about 50 milliseconds. For the people listening at 85 decibels, response times dropped by a further 50 milliseconds - a whole tenth of second faster than those “driving” with no music.
“But there’s a trade - off,” the psychologists told the European Congress of Psychology.“They lose the ability to look around the whole situation effectively.” In responding to objects that suddenly appeared, people subjected to 85-decibel rock music were around 100 milliseconds slower than both the other groups.Since some accident -- such as children running into the road -take place without any notice, drivers listening to loud music must be less safe as a result.
40.Which of the following is the best way to make driving safer
A.Loud music. B.Quiet music. C.Silence. D.Heavy metal music.
41.What does the phrase “pulling up” in paragraph 1 mean
A.Stopping. B.Giving somebody a lift. C.Putting up with. D.Driving.
42.Where did the researchers do the experiment
A.At crossroads. B.At a police traffic station.
C.In a crowded street. D.Under the same conditions as those of the streets.
43.Which of the following is NOT true of loud music
A.It helped the performers to brake sooner at red lights.
B.lt helped the performers to be more careful.
C.It helped the performers to respond faster to objects stepping in the way.
D.It can do more good than harm to drivers.

As skies are filled with millions of migrating(迁徙) birds, European scientists say the seasonal wonder appears to be strange: The fatter the bird, the better it flies.
The results of their study led to a theory opposite to a central one of aerodynamics (空气动力学), which says that the power needed to fly increases with weight.
For birds, obviously, the cost of flying with heavy fat is much smaller than we used to think. Researchers found that red knot wading birds double their normal body weight of 100 grams before making their twice-a-year nonstop flight between the British Isles and the Russian Arctic. Distance: 5,000 kilometers.
Another study in the magazine Nature measured the advantage of flying in an aerodynamic group which allows birds to save energy by flying smoothly and quietly in the lead bird’s air stream.
Flying in groups, their heart rates were 14.5 percent lower than flying alone, according to Henri, a French scientist. The findings help explain how birds complete difficult migrations. Researchers had thought that thinner, stronger birds would have the best chance to survive.
The first study suggests that building up fat to be burnt as fuel during the migration is worth more than the energy it takes to carry the additional weight.
In the study, researchers said their team studied the birds flown at different body weights during 28 simulated(模拟的) flights. They forced a small amount of special water into the birds’ bodies so that they could measure the amount of energy burnt during the flight.
48. A red knot wading bird of 100 grams will probably weigh _____ before making its nonstop migrating flight.
A. 50 grams B. 100 grams C. 150 grams D. 200 grams
49. During their migrating flight, red knot wading birds can save energy by flying___________.
A. separately B. alone C. in groups D. in pairs
50. A ________ red knot wading bird has a better chance to survive during its migrating flight.

51. The best title for this passage may probably be ________.
A. Birds Thin Down For Journey B. Birds Fatten Up For Journey
C. How Birds Build Up Fat For Journey D. How Birds Burn Energy For Journey

November not only marks the publication of Toni Morrison’s eagerly anticipated (期待) eighth novel , Love ,but it is also the tenth anniversary of her Nobel Prize for Literature . Morrison is the first black woman to receive a Nobel, and so honored before her in literature are only two black men; Wole Soyinka, the Nigerian playwright, poet and novelist, in 1986; and Derek Wolcott, the Caribbean-born poet, in 1992. But Morrison is also the first and only American-born Nobel prizewinner for literature since 1962, the year novelist John Steinbeck received the award.
Like Song of Solomon, Love is a multigenerational story, revealing the personal and communal legacy (遗产) of an outstanding black family . As Morrison scholars will tell you, Love is the third volume of a literary master’s trilogy (三部曲) investigating the many complexities of love. This trilogy began with Beloved (1988), which deals with a black mother’s love under slavery and in freedom, Jan (1993), the second volume, tells a story of romantic love in 1920s Harlem. This latest novel looks back from the 1970s to the 1940s and ’50s.
The emotional center of Love is Bill Cosey, the former owner and host of the shabby Cosey’s Hotel and Resort in Silk. North Carolina , described in the novel as “the best and best-known vacation spot for colored folk on the East Coast .” We get to know Cosey through the memories of five women who survive and love him: his granddaughter, his widow, two former employees, and a homeless young girl.
The latest novel ,Love , had been described in the promotional material from her publisher as “Morrison’s most accessible work since Song of Solomon” This comparison to her third novel , published in 1977,was an effective selling point.

The boy and the girl in the picture sat on a bench talking merrily while eating a water-melon. When they went away they left the melon’s skin on the bench, making it very dirty. They didn’t want to take any trouble throwing it into the dustbin although it was very near where they were sitting. Instead, they said that there would be someone who should clean the rubbish.
However, what they did violate public morality. If everyone behaves in this way, the world will be a big rubbish dump with flies flying round and people will live in a world of diseases. Besides, dustmen will have a very, very hard job to clean the world we live in.
