Where you save your money often depends on what you are saving for. If you are saving to buy a dictionary, then probably keep your money somewhere in your room. If you are saving for a big purchase like a mountain bike, where would you save your money?
One place to save money is the bank. Putting your money in a savings account will help your money earn more money. If you put your money in a piggy bank, one year later you’ll still have the same amount of money you put in. If you put your money in a savings account, one year later, you’ll have more money than you put in. Why?
When you keep your money in a bank, your money earns interest. Interest is the amount of money a bank pays you to use your money. The bank uses your money (and the money of other people, too) to loan money to people and businesses.
Another way is to buy a certificate of deposit(定期存款), or CD, at a bank. If you have some money that you don’t need to use for a period of time, this is a good way to make your money grow. You agree not to use the money for a certain period of time, say, from six months to five years. You can’t touch your money during that time. If you do, you must pay a penalty(违约金), or fee.
Since the bank is using your money for that time period, it will pay you interest. You will earn more interest with a CD than in a savings account. It’s because you promise to leave your money in the bank for a certain period of time. Banks pay different rates of interest. So, you may want to compare rates in newspaper ads before buying a CD.
60. Which way will help your money earn more money?
A. Putting your money in your room. B. Putting your money in a piggy bank.
C. Putting your money in your pocket. D. Putting your money in a savings account.
61. Interest is the amount of money which .
A. a bank uses B. a bank lends to people
C. a bank pays you D. a bank loans to businesses
62. If you draw your money before it is due .
A. you have to pay a penalty or fee B. you have to close your account
C. you have to open a new account D. you have to pay interest to the bank
63. The word “touch” in paragraph 4 could be best replaced by .
A. deposit B. borrow C. use D. cash
C
Ireland is the best place in the world to live in for 2005, according to a life quality ranking that appeared in Britain’s Economist magazine last week.
The ambitious attempt to compare happiness levels around the world is based on the principle that wealth is not the only measure of human satisfaction and well-being.
The index(指数)of 111 countries uses data on incomes, health, unemployment, climate, political stability, job security, sexual equality as well as what the magazine calls “freedom, family and community 1ife”.
Despite the bad weather, troubled health service, traffic jam, sexual inequality and the high cost of living, Ireland scored an impressive 8.33 points out of 10.
That put it well ahead of second-place Switzerland, which managed 8.07. Zimbabwe, troubled by political insecurity and hunger, is rated the worst, picking up only 3.89 points.
“Although rising incomes and increased individual choices are highly valued,” the report said, “some of the factors connected with modernization such as the breakdown in traditional institutions and family values partly weaken the positive result.”
“Ireland wins because it successfully combines the most desirable elements of the new with the preservation(保留)of certain warm elements of the old, such as stable family and community life.”
No.2 on the 1ist is Switzerland. The other nations in the top 10 are Norway, Luxembourg, Sweden, Australia, Iceland, Italy, Denmark and Spain. The US, which has the second highest per capita GDP (人均国内生产总值) after Luxembourg, took the 13th place in the survey. China was in the lower half of the league at 60th.
64. According to the passage, an Irish man may feel happy because of the country’s economic development as well as .
A. the traffic condition B. the cost of living
C. the health service D. the preservation of traditional values
65. It is implied in the passage that .
A. the richer a country is, the happier its people may feel
B. the poorer a country is, the happier its people may feel
C. people may feel happier in a country best combining the new and the old
D. traditional values are the main concern of most people in terms of happiness
66. Zimbabwe lost its points because of .
A. its extreme poverty B. its breakdown of traditional family values
C. its severe hot weather D. its lack of food and political insecurity
67. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph suggest?
A. China ranked 60th in economic development.
B. China needs more efforts to improve its living quality.
C. China ranked 60th in the world in per capita GDP.
D. China was one of the worst places to live in for 2005.

Differences in American schools compared with those found in most other countries lie in the fact that education here has long been intended for everyone—not just for a privileged elite(精英阶层). Schools are expected to meet the needs of every child, regardless of ability, and also the needs of society itself. This means that public schools offer more than academic subjects. It surprises many people when they come here to find high schools offering such courses as typing, sewing, radio repair, computer programming or driver training, along with traditional academic subjects such as mathematics, history, and languages. Students choose their courses depending on their interests, future goals, and level of ability. The underlying goal of American education is to develop every child to the fullest extent of his or her own possibilities, and to give each one a sense of civil and community consciousness.
Schools have traditionally played an important role in creating national unity and “Americanizing” the millions of immigrants(移民)who have poured into this country from many different backgrounds and origins. Schools still play a large role in the community, especially in the small towns. The approach to teaching may seem unfamiliar to many, not only because it is informal, but also because there is not much emphasis on learning facts. Instead, Americans try to teach their children to think for themselves and to develop their own intellectual and creative abilities. Students spend much time, learning how to use resource materials, libraries, statistics and computers. Americans believe that if children are taught to reason well and to research well, they will be able to find whatever facts they need throughout the rest of their lives. Knowing how to solve problems is considered more important than the accumulation(积累)of facts.
68. Which of the following best states the goal of American education?
A. To teach every learner some practical skills.
B. To provide every learner with rich knowledge.
C. To train every student to be a responsible citizen.
D. To give every student the opportunity to fully develop his/her ability.
69. American schools place great emphasis on the learner’s ________________.
A. enrichment of knowledge
B. accumulation of facts
C. learning of the ability to be creative
D. learning of the ability to work with his hands
70. According to the passage, American education meets the needs of all the following EXCEPT _____________.
A. the brightest students B. the slow students
C. the students from foreign countries D. the immigrants
71. Which of the following best states the feature of American education that makes it different from education in other countries?
A. The large number of its schools.
B. The variety of the courses offered in its schools.
C. Its special consideration given to immigrants.
D. Its underlying goal to develop every child’s abilities to the fullest extent.

Mistreat your animals and someone might take them from you. Allen is driving north out of Virginia in the middle of the night, with stolen property in the back of his car. But Allen isn’t a criminal—in fact he normally would never dream of breaking the law.
The “property” he stole is a dog he calls Flash. Allen doesn’t particularly want Flash—in fact, in a few hours he’ll drop him off at a stranger’s house and never see him again. “I couldn’t just stand by and do nothing,” he explains. “The owner was clearly neglecting the dog, but the police wouldn’t do anything about it.”
For over a year, Flash had been tied to a tree in front of someone’s house. “He was sick and malnourished(营养不良的),” says Allen. “More than once I saw the owner kick him for no reason at all.” Allen had repeatedly tried to get the owner to take better care of the animal, or to give it away to someone who would. Finally, he took matters into his own hands—in the dead of night, he took Flash off his chain and drove away with him.
Within an hour, Flash had a new license tag and was being treated by a veterinarian(兽医)who knew better than to ask questions. Pictures of the dog were put up on animal rescue websites, asking for someone to adopt the dog. A couple in New York offered to take the dog, and animal lovers in states along the way agreed to provide transportation.
Nobody can say for sure how many animals like Flash are “rescued” every year—receiving stolen property is a crime, so rescuers tend to stay in the shadows. But in this way more and more animals find their way to loving homes.
72. From the passage, we can know that Allen .
A. is a pet thief B. likes to steal dogs from others
C. wants to rescue mistreated pets D. always breaks the law
73. How does the rescued pet reach the people who want to adopt it?
A. Allen sends it to them in person. B. They come to get it.
C. A veterinarian sends it to them. D. Someone else helps take it to them.
74. Allen does the following to rescue the pet EXCEPT .
A. he puts the pet’s picture on the Internet for sale
B. he asks the owner to take better care of the pet
C. he asks the pet owner to send it to other people
D. he takes the pet away and gets a new license tag for it
75. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Pet Rescue B. Animal care
C. Animals and humans D. Humans and Nature

One possible version:
Dear Mr. Wang,
This morning we were ten minutes late for your class. You were so angry with us and criticized us for not attending the class on time when we entered the classroom. I think it was unfair for you to scold us without asking the reason. Because I had a stomachache before class, the two of my classmates accompanied me to the school clinic. The doctor gave me some medicine and asked me to take a rest there for a few minutes. That was why we were late for the English class.
Anyway, I am sorry for not asking you for a leave. We do hope you can forgive us for that.

W: Have you finished the work on my car?
M: I’m afraid not. We haven’t got the parts yet.

Text 6
W: Well, good morning, Tom. I haven’t seen you for a long time. What seems to be the trouble now?
M: I feel very tired. I’ve got a bad headache. And I can’t sleep well almost every night.
W: Have you been eating properly? Eating the right kind of food is important for your health, you know.
M: Well, I haven’t been eating very well, I guess. I have a lot of work to do, and I usually only have enough time to have a sandwich and a cup of coffee for lunch.
W: And what about dinner?
M: Sometimes I’m too tired to eat anything at all.
W: That’s too bad. You must have a well-balanced diet. But I think the most important thing for you to do at the moment is to have a good rest.

M: I’m afraid I can’t. I’ve got a bad headache.
W: Oh, haven’t you? I am sorry. Why don’t you take some medicine and lie down for a while? You’ll be all right in half an hour.
M: Yes, I know it’s not just the headache. I’m afraid I really ought to do my washing this evening and I’ve got to write home to my parents, too.
W: All right. Some other time then. Well, have a nice evening, Bob.
M: Wait a minute, Barbara. I’ll ring you early tomorrow morning.
W: It’s OK. See you then.
Text 8
W: Adam, I’m sorry!
M: But where have you been, Alice? You’re over an hour late.
W: Yes, but I couldn’t help it. I was late getting off work for a start, and then I missed the bus. The bus I did catch got caught in a traffic jam. It was one thing after another.
M: But why were you so late getting off work? The office closes at six, doesn’t it?
W: Yes, but there was a rush on at the moment, and my boss asked me to do some urgent letters.
M: But didn’t you tell him you had an appointment?
W: Well, no. I thought I’d finish in about five minutes. If it hadn’t been for missing the bus and the traffic, I wouldn’t have been so late. I am sorry.
M: Well, you’re here. And that’s the main thing.

M: Are you looking forward to your trip to Canada, Susan?
W: I can’t wait to see Canada, Jason, but I’m scared of the journey. My husband insists on flying, but I want to sail. Planes make me nervous.
M: There’s nothing to be frightened of. How many planes fly across the Atlantic every day?
W: I’ve no idea. Hundreds, I suppose.
M: And how often do you hear of a crash? Once or twice a year?
W: Yes, but planes fly so high and fast that once is enough.
M: There are more road accidents per day than air deaths per year. Air transport is really safe compared with road transport.
W: I still prefer to go by sea. Ships may not travel fast but at least you can relax. I’d love a trip on a fine and expensive ship.
M: It’s fine if you’re a good sailor, but have you ever traveled far in a rough sea?
W: No. I’ve only been in a boat once. I sailed down the River Thames on a sightseeing tour. But in any case I’d rather be sea-sick than dead.

W: Would you please say something about London, Jack?
M: London is one of the largest cities in the world, and one-sixth of all the people in England, Wales and Scotland live in or near it. The center of London is quite small, only about one square mile. However, the area known as Greater London is much larger and has a population of over 8 million.
London has grown rapidly during the last 100 years. This is because many of the roads and railways in the country meet at London. It is not only the most important port in Britain but also the most important city in the world.
There are many factories in the country. They make things that people need, such as clothes and furniture. There are many important banks and companies in London, too, and every year many thousands of businessmen from all over the world visit London. At London Airport, which is only a few miles outside the city, a plane lands or takes off every minute of the day.
