For years, scientists have been listening for weak whispers of E.T. phoning anyone. Now, some researchers are hearing sounds — probably the sound of hammers, the rumble of construction equipment. Are we alone in the galaxy(星系)?
The answer to that question seems clearer, thanks to increases in funding, facilities, astronomical discoveries, and advances in technology. Researchers say within a few years they’ll be able to do far more exhaustive(彻底的) searches for civilizations beyond our solar system.
The field “is in a stage of explosive growth,” says Kent Cullers, director of research and development at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, Calif. “I’m not only excited; I’m extremely happy.”
A decade ago, the idea of searching for intelligent life drew more sneers(嘲笑) than cheers in some circles. NASA ended its small-scale program, leaving the search to private efforts. Now, interest is building again.
One factor is rising technological horsepower. From cheaper, faster computers to devices better able to find and process extremely weak signals, technologies are allowing researchers to expand their searches beyond radio waves and visible light. Yet for all their efforts, scientists have come up empty-handed. But even that serves as an encouragement.
“The section of the galaxy we’ve searched… is greatly small,” Dr. Cullers says. “If we tie ourselves to the growth of computing, within half a century the search will be billions of times larger than it is today.”
48. What does this passage mainly talk about?
A. The civilizations of humans.
B. The development of the galaxy.
C. The technology to hunt for E.T.
D. The hunt for E.T.
49. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A. The old question whether there is intelligent life is still puzzling people.
B. Many people thought it impossible to search for E.T.
C. Some researchers have heard the dialogues of E.T. phoning someone.
D. Better technology and computers help search for intelligent life beyond Earth.
50. Why does the interest in intelligent life build again?
A. Because astronomers have found a vast number of solar systems.
B. Because new technologies can make researchers expand their studies.
C. Because researchers have searched only a small part of the galaxy.
D. Because NASA has left the search to private efforts.
51. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that _____.
A. the technology has played a critical role in finding the intelligent life
B. Kent Cullers is not satisfied with the growth of the efforts to find E.T.
C. radio waves and visible light are the evidence of the existence of E.T.
D. the building of huge new telescopes will solve the traditional problem

Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are over concerned with their own appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: What kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes?
It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must affect people unfavorably. A person’s self-concept is reflected in the way he or she behaves and the way a person themselves has a deep effect on all areas of their lives. Shy people, who have low self-esteem(自尊), are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need faith that they are doing “the right thing”. Shy people are very sensitive to criticism. It makes them feel inferior(自卑). They also find it difficult to be pleased by praises because they believe they are unworthy of praise. A shy person may respond to a praise with a statement like this one: “You’re just saying that to make me feel good, but I know it’s not true.” It is clear that, while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful. Can shyness be completely got rid of, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determination. It is important for people to accept their weaknesses as well as their strengths, for example, not fair for them to label themselves inferior because they have to be realistic. Living on the impossible leads to absence of inferiority. Each one of us has his or her own characteristics. We are interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our chances for a rich and fulfilling life.
52. The first paragraph is mainly about ______.
A. the thoughts of shy people
B. the cause of shyness
C. the effect of shyness on people
D. the questions in the minds of shy people
53. According to the writer, self-awareness is ______.
A. harmful to people B. a weak point of shy people
C. the cause of unhappiness D. a good characteristic
54. What is the shy people’s reaction to praise?
A. They are pleased by it.
B. They feel it is not true.
C. They are very sensitive to it.
D. They feel they are worthy of it.
55. We can learn from the passage that shyness can ______.
A. help us to live up to our full development
B. enable us to understand ourselves better
C. block our chances for a successful life
D. have nothing to do with lack of self-esteem

Nowadays, an increasing number of students would not like to live in a school dormitory .Instead , They rent rooms outside the school. Recently we held a class meeting to talk about this issue, on which opinions are divided.
In my opinion, there are advantages for both. Living in a dormitory can offer us the chance to increase friendship and cooperation between classmates. And of course it’s much safer. A dormitory is just like a society, which enables us to learn to adapt to each other, thus preparing us for our social life later. As for renting rooms outside the school to live alone, it is first of all better for our study as we can feel free in our own room without being interrupted by others. As a result, we can have more time and devote ourselves to our study attentively. But there may appear some safety problems when we live outside the school.
Anyhow, I prefer to live in the school dormitory.
