As late as 1800, women’s only place was in the home. The idea of woman in the business world was unthinkable. Men were certain that no woman could do a good job outside her home. The eastern Indonesian island of Komodo is proving a hit with adventurous tourists eager to catch a glance of the world’s largest lizard species. The island is the home of the huge lizard called the Komodo dragon.
A later species of the Jurassic period dinosaurs 130 million years ago, the Komodo dragon is in danger and has been placed under protection by the Indonesian government.
The huge lizard is called “Buaya Darat”by the local people who show great respect for the species. Tales handed down over generations of islanders speak of the dragon warning people of getting close to crocodiles.
The animal can reach a length of three meters when fully grown, gain a weight of about 135 kilograms and may live to an age of about 100 years. It digs a hole in the ground as deep as 9 meters and lay eggs---up to 30 at a time---that hatch in April or May. The newly hatched lizards, about 45 centimeters long, live in trees for several months.
Komodo dragons have been known to eat smaller members of the species and sometimes even other grown-ups. The Komodo dragon was first discovered in 1912 by a group of fishermen who protected themselves from a storm in the Banda Sea on the island.

Long bus rides are like television shows. They have a beginning, a middle, and an end with commercials(商业广告) thrown in every three or four minutes. The commercials are unavoidable. They happen whether you want them or not. Every couple of minutes a billboard glides by outside the bus window. “Buy super Clean Toothpaste.” “Drink Good Wet Root Beer.” “Fill up with Pacific Gas.” Only if you sleep, which is equal to turning the television set off, are you spared the unending cry of “You Need It Now!”
The beginning of the ride is comfortable and somewhat exciting, even if you’ve traveled that way before. Usually some things have changed-new houses, new buildings, sometimes even a new road. The bus driver has a style of driving and it’s fun to try to figure it out the first hour or so. If the driver is particularly reckless or daring, the ride can be as thrilling as a suspense story. Will the driver pass the truck in time? Will the driver move into the right or the left-hand lane? After a while, of course, the excitement dies down. Sleeping for a while helps pass the middle hours of the ride. Food always makes bus rides more interesting. But you’ve got to be careful of what kind of food you eat. Too much salty food can make you very thirsty between stops.
The end of the ride is somewhat like the beginning. You know it will soon be over and there’s a kind of expectation and excitement in that. The seat, of course, has become harder as the hours have passed. By now you’ve sat with your legs crossed, with your hands in your lap, with your hands on the arm rests-even with your hands crossed behind your head. The end comes just at the right time. There are just no more ways to sit.
51. According to the passage, what do the passengers usually see when they are on a long bus trip?
A. Buses on the road B.Films on television
C. Advertisements on billboards D. Gas stations
52. What is the purpose of this passage?
A. To show the similarities between long bus trips and TV shows.
B. To persuade you to take a long bus trip.
C. To display the differences between long bus trips and TV shows.

53. The writer of this passage would probably favor _____________.
A. bus drivers who weren’t reckless
B. driving alone
C. a television set on the bus
D. no billboards along the road
54. The writer feels long bus rides are like TV shows because ______________.
A. the commercials both on TV shows and on the billboards along the road are fun
B. they both have a beginning, a middle, and an end, with commercials in between
C. the drivers are always reckless on TV shows just as they are on buses
D. both traveling and watching TV are not exciting
55. The writer thinks that the end of the ride is somewhat like the beginning because both are ______________.

Heath and climate scientists have mapped how climate change affects different parts of the world in different ways. The scientists point out to evidence that changes in the past thirty years many already be affecting human health. Temperature changes may also influence the spread of disease. For example, warmer weather speeds the growth of organisms that cause diseases like malaria(疟疾) and dengue fever(登革热).
The work by scientist from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the World Health Organization appeared in the Journal Nature. Jonathan Patz, professor of the Gaylord Nelson Institute, led the study. He notes that climate scientists linked global warming to the heat that killed thousands in Europe in August of 2003. he says poor countries are least responsible for the warming yet are most at risk from the health effects of higher temperatures. He says areas at greatest risk include Southern and Eastern Africa and coastlines along the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Also, large cities experience what scientists call a “heat island” effect that can intensify(加强) conditions.
Professor Patz says average temperatures worldwide have increased about one-third of a degree Celsius(摄氏的) in the last thirty years. But he tells us even that can make s difference with a disease like malaria. The report says average temperatures could increase by as much as six degrees Celsius by the end of the century.
Representatives from about two hundred nations have been meeting in Montreal, Canada, to discuss climate change. The ten-day conference ends December ninth. It is the first such United Nations meeting since the Kyoto(京都) Protocol took effect earlier this year. The protocol seeks to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases released as pollution into air.

写作二:
The problem of the global becoming warm is getting more and more serious. Some evidence shows that disasters in the past thirty years have some relations to the temperature changes. Even some of the diseases such as malaria and dengue fever are due to it. Thousands of people in Europe died from heat in August of 2003, which is another warning to us.
In order to keep our earth from getting warm, we should try to take all possible actions. We must force the factories which send out something to pollute the air to pause their work and improve their facilities. We must try to control the production of cars and encourage people to share the same car when they go to work. At the same time, we must try to produce vehicle which is powered with solar. If we work hard together, we may manage to stop our earth from getting warm.
