第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
I was born in Tuckahoe, Talbot County, Maryland. I have no accurate knowledge of my age, never having seen any record containing it. By far the larger part of the slaves know as little of their age as horses know of theirs, and it is the wish of most masters within my knowledge to keep their slaves thus ignorant(不知情的). I do not remember having ever met a slave who could tell of his birthday. They seldom come nearer to it than planting - time, harvesting, springtime, or fall time. A lack of information concerning my own was a source of unhappiness to me even during childhood. The white children could tell their ages, I could not tell why the same right ought to be taken away from me. I was not allowed to ask my master about it. He considered all such questions on the part of a slave improper and impolite. The nearest guess makes me now between twenty - seven and twenty – eight years of age. I come to this, from hearing my master say, some time during 1835, I was about seventeen years old. My mother was named Harriet Bailey. She was the daughter of Isaac and Betsey Bailey, both colored, and quite dark.
My father was a white man. The opinion was also whispered that my master was my father; but of the correctness of this opinion, I know nothing and I had no means to know. My mother and I were separated when I was only a baby – before I knew her as my mother. It is a common custom, in the part of Maryland from which I ran away, to part children from their mothers at a very early age. Frequently, before the child has reached its twelfth month, its mother is taken from it, and hired out on some farm a considerable distance off, and the child is placed under the care of an older woman, too old for field labor.
56. It can be learned from the text that
A. the slaves forgot the exact time when they were born
B. the writer didn't know whether his master was his father
C. the writer was about twenty - seven years old in 1835
D. the writer's mother left him as soon as he was born
57. The underlined word "it" in Paragraph 1 refers to
A. their birthday B. my age C. harvesting D. Maryland
58. According to the passage, when the writer was very young his mother
A. ran away B. died
C. had several children D. was sent elsewhere
59. The author was most probably raised
A. by his white father B. by an old woman slave
C. with his master's support D. together with his brother

JAMAICA
There’s no place like home.
Here you are, at home in Jamaica in your very own villa(别墅), all comfort and privacy.
A waitress is going shopping soon after you live in, to surprise you with a lobster for dinner.
Madly extravagant? Not at all.
There are hundreds of villas for rent, all over Jamaica. Bring your family, or share one with your best friends and the cost becomes increasingly attractive. And what nicer way to experience the beautiful wonders of Jamaica than to have your own special place to return to each evening where you can sit back relaxedly, talk about tomorrow, and to yourself, “There’s no place like home.”
Make it Jamaica. Again.

Recently, two professors of the University of Nebraska made a weekly television program in which they discussed worthwhile books. Even primary school graduates watched, listened and learned. Therefore, it is not true that ETV has not been taught in the United States. I doubt the statement that "programs which inform and enrich the mind in a general manner are wasted in schools". There is a need to teach directly by television if we take teaching in the broad sense of the term.
Direct teaching by television has been explained as a series of television lessons directly related to a particular classroom textbook to satisfy the needs of pupils and teachers in a particular subject. Each lesson will be prepared by a teacher-specialist who also knows television production techniques and uses the modern technology in a television studio to put across his subject .
Will such TV lessons do without the services of a classroom teacher or will they cost him his reputation (名誉) or job? No! In fact, without the classroom teacher to review the material, enlarge on it and answer questions that the students may bring up, such TV lessons would not be of very great value.
The children who watch ETV do so with different results - from very good to fair. Possibly, the programs are too similar or too serious. Generally, they are not too long. Very likely, the children who benefit least are the slow learners. However, it is believed that there is a bright future for ETV inside and outside the classroom. The time may come, when bigger and clearer screens will be used in the classroom, bigger and better programs will be exchanged between countries and more foreign experts will be brought in, listened to and followed by newcomers in the ETV field.
64. Which of the following suggests the program is popular?
A. It was shown every week.
B. Even children enjoyed watching it.
C. It was made by university professors.
D. Worthwhile books were discussed in it.
65. Which of the following is true about ETV according to the text?
A. It requires a good command of modern technology.
B. It can be valuable without classroom teachers.
C. It can meet all the needs of both teachers and students.
D. It is sure to help different students achieve good results.
66. The underlined phrase "to put across his subject" probably means __
A. to explain his subject B. to learn his subject well
C. to discuss his subject D. to know what he is talking about
67. What would be the best title for the text?
A. The Future of ETV B. ETV---A New Way of Teaching
C. The Excitement of ETV D. The Advantages and Disadvantages of ETV

Sometimes today—perhaps several times—Dick Winter will think about the 19-year-old who saved his life. Because of this young man, Winter enjoys things like friendships, colors and laughter every day.
The young man saved Winter’s life by signing an organ donor card(器官捐献卡).
“I can’t say thank you enough,” Winter said yesterday at a news conference marking the tenth anniversary of the Multi Organ Transplant program at Toronto General Hospital in Canada.
What Winter knows of the 19-year-old who saved his life is only that he died in a car accident and that his family was willing to honor his wishes and donate his organs for transplantation.
His liver(肝脏) went to Winter, who was dying from liver trouble. “Not a day goes by that I don’t think of what a painful thing it must have been for them,” Winter said yesterday. “They are very, very special people.”
Winter, 63, is fitter now than he was 10 years ago, when he got the transplant. He has five medals from the 1995 World Transplant Games in swimming and hopes to collect some more next year in Japan.
The biggest change for Winter, however, isn’t that he has become a competitive athlete. The biggest change is how deeply he appreciates every little thing about his life now.
“I have no time for arguments,” said Winter. “You change everything. Material things don’t mean as much. Friendship means a lot.”
Also at yesterday’s news conference was Dr. Gray Levy, Winter’s doctor.
Levy knows that for every recipient(接受者)like Winter, there are several others who die even though they could be saved because there aren’t enough donated organs.
Levy said greater public awareness and more resources are needed. He noted that in Spain and the United States, hospitals receive $10,000 when there is a donation to cover the costs of the operating room, doctors, nurses and teams to work with the donors’ families.
68.What do we learn about Dick Winter?
A.He is becoming less competitive now.
B.He is always thinking about his early life.
C.He knows well about the young man.
D.He values friendships more than material things.
69.Dr. Levy would agree that .
A.Spanish hospitals have more favorable conditions for organ transplant
B.The Canadian public have realized the importance of organ transplant
C.Spanish hospitals received more money from the donors than those in Canada.
D.Canadian hospitals now have enough donated organs
70.What’s the author’s purpose in writing this article?
A. The public should give more support to organ transplant.
B. Transplant patients are thankful for the help they receive.
C. Spain and the US pay more attention to organ transplant.
D. It is not easy to get organs for transplant.

A new study says one part of the human brain may become smaller as the result of a condition known as jet lag. Jet lag results from flying long distances in an airplane. People with jet lag may feel extremely tired for several days. They may also have problems thinking clearly and remembering.
Recently a researcher at the University of Bristol in Britain reported the findings of his jet lag study, which involved twenty young women who worked for international airlines. They had served passengers on airplanes for five years. These flight attendants flew across many countries and at least seven time zones. In the study, the flight attendants had different amounts of time to recover from jet lag. Half the women spent five days or fewer in their home areas between long flights. The other half spent more than fourteen days in their home areas.
The researcher took some saliva(唾液) from the women’s mouths to measure levels of a hormone(荷尔蒙) that increases during stress. He tested them to see if they could remember where black spots appeared on a computer screen. And he took pictures of their brains to measure the size of the brain’s temporal lobes(脑叶).
It was found that the women who had less time between flights had smaller right temporal lobes. This area of the brain deals with recognizing and remembering what is seen. This group of women performed worse and had slower reaction times on the visual memory test. And their saliva samples showed higher levels of stress hormones.
The researcher believes the brain needs at least ten days to recover after a long trip. He says airline workers told him their ability to remember got worse after working on planes for about four years. Other studies have shown that increased feelings of stress can cause a loss of cells in the part of the brain that controls memory.
Scientists say more tests are needed to study the effects of jet lag on the brain. They want to find out if too much jet lag could permanently(永久性的)affect memory .
71. According to the text, jet lag .
A.can cause difficulties in speaking
B.can make people feel tired for a few weeks
C.can only be found in flight attendants
D.can be caused by flying for a long period
72. From the result of the research we can see that .
A.the women who have longer rest at home show better memory
B.the women who fly in short time have smaller right temporal lobes
C.the women who have longer flights fail the memory test
D.the women who rest more than 14 days produce more stress hormones
73. The area of the brain that deals with recognizing and remembering what is seen is .
the saliva
the hormone
the right temporal lobes
the left temporal lobes
74. It can be inferred from the text that .
A.the conclusion is refused by many scientists
B.scientists fear that this research is not done properly
C.every scientific conclusion needs the support from many tests
D.the women who were examined in the research were not healthy
75. What is the subject discussed in the text?
A.The cause of jet lag
B.A story of a group of flight attendants
C.The importance of having enough rest after flights
D.A research about the effects of jet lag on the brain

Studying Abroad
In recent years, tens of thousands of Chinese students have gone to foreign countries to study.
There are many advantages in attending schools abroad. First, students who have studied abroad can act as mediators between people of different cultures. Second, they can learn much more advanced knowledge of science and technology from foreign countries. Third, they can learn foreign languages more quickly.
However, there are some disadvantages. Most of the students are too young to live by themselves without any living experience. Besides, being far away from their home country, they may feel lonely and homesick. Also, the costs are much higher there than in the native country. In spite of these, there are more advantages than disadvantages. In my opinion, it is advisable to attend schools abroad.
录音底稿
(Text 1)
M: How do you go to work, Betty?
W: I usually go by bike, and when it’s rainy I’ll take a bus. But today I’d like to walk there.
(Text 2)
M: Do you think you could stop making noise while washing up? I’m trying to write a report for tomorrow’s meeting.
W: Oh, I’m sorry. I thought you were in the garden.
(Text 3)
W: What’s wrong?
M: I have a pain in my back.
W: Why not go to see your doctor?
M: Yes, darling.
W: Let me drive the car out of the garage; then let’s go.
(Text 4)
W: I’m afraid I have to leave as your father is waiting for me to prepare supper. See you.
M: Well, give him my regards. Hope to see you both on Saturday.
(Text 5)
W: There was a storm warning on the radio this morning.
M: Oh, no! I guess we’ll have to change our sailing plans then. Would you rather go cycling?
W: Good. I thought you wanted to go to see a film.
(Text 6)
M: Hello, Julie. Have you been to the new sports center yet?
W: Not yet. Bob. Where is it?
M: On Hill Road, you know, near Mill Street behind the station.
W: Oh, is it good?
M: Yes, it’s great. You can do a lot of sports. I played table tennis last Thursday and watched the basketball match there, too.
W: What about swimming?
M: There is a very good swimming pool there, too. Do you want to go with me next week?
W: Sure. Any day except Wednesday.
M: Well, why don’t we go on Friday? Then we can stay late.
W: OK. Let’s meet after school.
(Text 7)
M: Hello, it’s … it is Cathy, isn’t it?
W: Oh, Michael? Oh, my goodness! I haven’t seen you for ages!
M: Nice to see you again after all these years. What have you been doing?
W: Well, I tried many things after we left school. I’m now working for a large oil company, oh, in charge of sales, mainly. So I travel a lot.
M: Oh, that’s great! You must really enjoy that.
W: Oh, I do. Yeah, it’s exciting. It’s quite tiring, though. But, um, what about you, Mike? What about you. Mike? What do you do?
M: I work in a law firm. I’m practicing business law, you know.
W: Oh! That’s interesting.
M: Yeah, I’m happy doing what I do.
W: Good.
M: Anyway, it’s great to see you. We must get together sometime.
W: Yes, we should. Look, give me your address and phone number. UM… and then I’ll give you a ring and we can fix something up.
(Text 8)
W: Well, honey, which one do you prefer? Number 4 Candy Street or Number 6 Station Road?
M: Well, it’s difficult – they’re both very nice and they’ve both got the four bedrooms we need. Station road is close to town so it would be very convenient for work and shopping. But Candy Street is much quieter because it is much further out.
W: Well, we could get to town easily though.
M: That’s true. One thing that worries me about Station Road is that it hasn’t got a garage. And then there are the gardens, the one at Station Road is tiny but the one at Candy Street is huge. Could we keep it looking good?
W: Yes, of course, it would be hard work but I love that garden and I think it is a much nice house.
M: You’re right -- and four is my lucky number.
W: OK. Let’s give them a call. I want to move in as soon as possible.
(Text 9)

(Text 10)
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. I’m pleased to meet all of you here because you are my special guests. Welcome to the museum of our company. My name is Brown, well, George Brown. I am the general manager of the company. As you know, we mainly make computers in our company, as well as some other electronic products. But we are also quite interested in education. That’s why we have founded this museum, where, we hope, children can learn how computers have been developed, how they are made and how they are used in industry, agriculture, scientific research, and many other areas. Children can operate the computers, they can push buttons and listen to stories about computer, and they can enjoy video shows. I know you are all teachers, and you know what school children really need. So I hope you can give me suggestions after you have been shown around. I want my museum to be the best of its kind when it opens to all school children. This is Mr. Tom Silver, my assistant. He will be your guide now. I’ll be with you again in one hour and a half. Enjoy yourselves. See you!

Albert Schweitzer was born in Alsace on Jan.14th, 1875. At that time, it was a part of Germany. His generous spirit was first awakened through his training as a Lutheran minister. Besides gaining a reputation as a minister, he also became respected for his ability to play the organ(风琴). He was a man of many talents. His concern for other people turned his attention to medicine. He had also received doctoral degrees in philosophy and music. His wife took an interest in medicine too and became a nurse. Many people thought that he should remain and lecture in Europe to have a strong influence on Western civilization. Though he listened to their suggestions, he finally decided to follow his own mind. This led him to Africa. Albert had felt that all men should accept the responsibility of helping others. He felt particularly concerned for black Africans who had been treated unfairly by white men. He earned the money he needed by performing on the organ and by lecturing. With this money he bought equipment and opened a hospital in Africa. He was a man of great strength who faced great problems with courage. The threat of war, the reality of imprisonment during World War I, one as a German citizen, and the unbearable heat in Africa did not worry him at all. England has a longstanding problem with youngsters dropping out of training.
Almost half of 17 year olds in some parts of England have dropped out of full-time education or training, government figures show. The data show 49% in Thurrock and 44% in Salford have opted out of school or professional training. Across England, 31% of 17 year olds are not in education or training.
The figures also show deep regional divides, with wealthier areas such as Richmond and Harrow recording 18% of 17 year olds out of official education.
The data confirms England’s poor international standing for staying-on rates in education. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development ranks England’s drop-out rates as among the worst among industrialised countries.
Regionally, the data show Yorkshire and the Humber has the highest rate of 17 year olds not in full-time education or work-based training at 35%. Outer London has the highest staying-on rate, with 27% of 17 year olds having opted out of official learning. In the East of England this figure stands at 31% and at 29% in the South West.
Edward Davey, Liberal Democrat Shadow Education Secretary, said the government should be ashamed that so many youngsters were dropping out of school.
Mr. Davey said lessons need to be made more related to young people and reiterated(重申)his party’s supporting for the curriculum reforms proposed by the Tomlinson committee.
A spokesman for the Department for Education and Skills said the government had implemented a series of reforms, with a £2.5bn rise in funding for further education
The Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA), which was introduced in September 2004, was also encouraging young people to stay in education, he added. Finding a job in a distant market can be tough, as employers are less likely to give a break to someone who has no experience in the market, or who must be flown in for an interview. To make matters even trickier, what holds true in one country often doesn’t apply in another, says job recruiter Lawrence Wang, a California native, author of the job-hunt book “Know the Game, Play the Game” and managing director of Beijing-based Wang & Li Asia Resources.
For starters, he says, remember that while the Internet is good, legwork is better. With the proliferation of specialized online job sites, it is easy to get your resume to the market you are interested in. “But there’s really no substitute for being there,” says Mr. Wang.
He suggests planning a trip to the area and letting the companies you are interested in know you are coming to town and would like to stop by. Contacting local job centers, or stopping by bars and clubs frequented by professionals in the area, can give a job searcher more ideas and contacts, Mr. Wang says. If you don’t know anyone in the city you are targeting, check your university alumni(校友录)directory to see if any classmates live in the area.
Often, this process can help people decide whether they really want to reconsider their choice. “For example, Beijing is a real exciting place, but it’s not for everyone,” he says. “People sometimes come here a few times and decide it’s not for them—which is good. Now they won’t spend the next five years wondering what could have been.”
Mr. Wang suggests talking to anyone who knows something about the job market you are looking at: “What are the trends, what is the current market mindset? What kind of skills are employers really looking at right now?” he says.
Job seekers must also be realistic about their chances in a market where they have no language skills, Mr. Wang adds.
68. The main purpose of this passage is to ________.
A. tell jobseekers what to do when hunting for a job in a foreign country
B. advise jobseekers on going abroad for a job interview
C. warn jobseekers of the problems they might have in hunting for a job abroad
D. inform jobseekers of some job information in a foreign market
69. What does Mr. Wang mean by saying “But there’s really no substitute for being there”?
A. The jobseeker had better pay a visit to the place intended to work in.
B. The jobseeker should call on anyone he/she knows in the area.
C. The jobseeker should try to contact local job centers.
D. The jobseeker may try visiting local bars and clubs.
70. It’s implied in the passage that ________.
A. a real ideal place is not necessarily suitable for every jobseeker
B. a good language knowledge determines the success of job hunting abroad
C. it’s easy for people to get jobs with the specialized online job sites
D. what holds true in a job market is widely accepted by all employers worldwide
71. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Talking to Others About Your Job B. Being Realistic About Your Job
C. A Trip Abroad Can Help You Win a Job D. Finding a Job in a Distant Market
E
A growing number of young doctors and medical students in the city are publishing online diaries, or blogs, discussing their work and offering advice and occasionally a diagnosis to readers.
While some hospital managers are worried about young doctors diagnosing people who they have never met face to face, the doctors say blogs help them communicate with industry insiders and share their knowledge with a larger audience.
“Since I have become known by more people, there are some 600 visitors to my blog every day,” said Lu Jia, a doctor in Zhongshan Hospital’s surgery department, who goes by the online name bluefoxmd. “Blogs are convenient for my classmates and friends in hospitals to contact each other and discuss problems during our practice and work.”
He said many people ask questions about their diseases, and the proper hospital or doctor to visit for treatment. He also wrote about his daily work and his feelings on being a doctor.
“It is good to give others medical information. If I can’t answer the question, I will check books or consult my colleagues,” he said. “Some patients even come to the hospital for me to treat them.”
Chen Huifen, an administrative official at Zhongshan Hospital, said such blogs are normally created by young doctors or medical students.
“Young doctors are more interested in the Internet and have more spare time to write a blog,” Chen said. “It is effective to improve the relationship between doctors and patients and allow the public to know more about the medical industry.”
Other doctors use their blogs to promote traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and introduce new treatments that combine Western medicine and TCM.
Medical blogs have their critics, however.
“The Internet can’t evaluate a doctor’s qualifications, and diagnosing an illness involves a complicated process—you can’t simply depend on a patient’s dictation,” said Yu Zhuowei, president of Huadong Hospital. He couldn’t say if any doctors at his hospital keep a blog.
According to Chinese law, medical school students are not qualified to offer a diagnosis or prescription.
72. The underlined words “industry insiders” in the second paragraph probably refer to ________.
A. patients B. close friends C. medical workers D. internet surfers
73. This passage mainly tells us about ________.
A. a new way of medical treatment B. new medical progress

A. it offers a good chance for doctors to help clear up some patients’ problems
B. it is convenient for doctors to hold discussions about their work on the Internet
C. it offers the public more information about the medical industry
D. it allows young doctors more spare time after work
75. What do you think the author’s attitude towards the blog is?

Good evening, dear Mr. Bryan, teachers and fellow students, I’m glad to be here on behalf of all my fellow students to express our thanks to our school for providing us with such a good learning environment. I’d like to say thank you to Mr. Bryan and all the other teachers for the instruction and help as well as the great efforts they have made for us. Mr. Bryan is leaving for America soon. Let’s wish him a pleasant journey.
I hope our school will offer us students more opportunities to improve our spoken English in the future and give us more time for sports and games.
Thank you very much!

W: Didn’t you go to the meeting last night, either?
M: No, I had a light fever and I had to go to sleep quite early.
(Text 2)
M: Why is Tom tired and upset?
W: He’s been studying day and night for his final exam. I warned him many times to prepare earlier, but he wouldn’t listen.
(Text 3)
M: Do you mind if I ask you to eat in that restaurant?
W: Certainly not.
(Text 4)
W: Where are you going to spend your holidays, Harry?
M: My wife wants to go to Egypt. I’d like to fly there, too.
W: I’m sure you will enjoy yourselves.
(Text 5)
W: Tickets, please.
M: We want to catch the eight nineteen to London.
W: You’ve just missed it!
M: Goodness me! What should we do then?
W: You can come in the afternoon and catch the three sixteen.
(Text 6)
W: This is the second floor. Here are your rooms.
M: Thank you. Take the suitcases into my rooms, please.
W: Yes, sir.
M: Where is the dining room?
W: It is on the ground floor.
M: When is breakfast?
W: Eight o’clock to ten o’clock.
M: I would like breakfast in the room.
W: Yes, sir. When?
M: Nine o’clock, please.
(Text 7)
M: It’s so hard for me to learn English. Why is it so easy for you?
W: I didn’t know you were having problems. Maybe it’s easier for me because I already speak two languages. But also, I really work at it.
M: Well, I always do my homework and go to classes. What else do you think would help?
W: Well, you might try reading newspapers. And I always talk to Americans when I get a chance, though sometimes it’s hard.
M: But, how do you meet Americans? I only know other foreign students.
W: How about sitting next to an American at lunch, or have you ever thought of asking someone over to your house for dinner?
M: Those are good ideas. But I’m a little shy to speak English.
W: You won’t learn if you don’t try and speak. If I were you, I’d talk to your English teacher. He might have some good ideas.

Girl: Hello. Is that Uncle George? Where are you? Wait a minute, please. I’ll call Mother. Mother, It’s Uncle George.
W: George, dear. Where are you? At the corner of Pine and State Street? Wait there, Michael can come and get you.
M: No. It’s not necessary. We drove the car. Give me the directions. I’ll find my way.
W: Go north on State Street to Main Street. There’s a large square there. Turn left. Continue to King Road. Turn right. Continue on King Road to Seventh Street. Turn left. We are in the middle of the block. Can you repeat the directions, George?
M: I think so. I have to go north on State Street to Main Street. I turn left to King Road. I continue on King Road. I turn right to Seventh Street. I turn left and go to the middle of the block.
W: That’s it. I’ll see you soon, George. Mary, is the table set?
Girl: Yes, Mother. Come and look.
W: It looks very pretty. Thank you, Mary.
(Text 9)
M: It is almost vacation time. Have you found a summer job yet?
W: No, I don’t think I will work at the boy’s camp where I worked last summer. Camp jobs don’t pay much.
M: I think I can find a job at the Evergreen Hotel. A friend of mine was a waiter there last summer. The pay wasn’t good, but the tips were.
W: My sister worked there last summer, making beds and cleaning bathrooms. She didn’t like it but she earned a lot of money.
M: That sounds really good.
W: Yes. And I want a job outside. After sitting in college classes all winter, I’d like a job in the open air.
M: The high school kids earn a lot of money every summer cutting grass. My brother is only fourteen, but he gets five dollars every time he cut somebody’s grass, and it only takes him an hour. He just rides around on the machine that he bought, and the machine does all the work.
W: That’s pretty good. I used to cut grass when I was in high school. But now I think I might work for a road building company, or something like that.
M: It would be a good experience. And you could earn a lot too.
(Text 10)
Miss Richards was a teacher at a school for boys and girls. She taught chemistry and physics from the lowest to the highest classes in the school. Sometimes the new classes learned rapidly, but sometimes they were very slow, and then Miss Richards had to repeat the things many times.
One year, the first class had been studying chemistry for several weeks when Miss Richards suddenly asked, “What is water? Who knows? Hands up.”
There was silence for a few seconds, and Miss Richards felt sad but then one boy raised his hand.
“Yes, Dick?” said Miss Richards encouragingly. He was not one of the brightest students in the class, so she was glad this boy could answer.
“Water is a liquid which has no color until you wash your hands in it, then it turns black,” the boy replied.
