A graded reader is a book containing simplified languages used to help learners master the language. Readers come in different levels, from beginners to advanced. English learners need to choose a reader that is suitable for their level.
Why use readers? Lots of research shows that extensive(广泛的) reading improves all aspects of language learning, including vocabulary, speaking skills, fluency(流利), writing skills and reading comprehension.
Reading is a way of learning English without classes or a teacher. It helps develop learner independence. And while reading graded readers, learners don’t have to run to a dictionary because the language is at their level.
How do I get started? The entire class can read the same book or different books at different times.
How do I know the right level? If your class is all reading the same book, choose one that is appropriate for their level. If your students are reading different books, you can have a selection of books at different levels. In this case, don’t worry too much about the level. A learner who is interested in detective stories might read a higher level book if the motivation(动机) is there.
How to read the book depends on students” age, motivation and class time available. Some classes like to read silently, others like to read aloud in small groups and some enjoy being read to by the teacher. Be sensitive to the class and ask for their opinions.
Some pre-reading activities are needed. Before students open a book, it is important to spark interest in the story and in the whole process of reading. For example, ask them to guess what the story is from cover, chapter titles and let students put them in the best order, or discuss the author.
During reading, choose a suitable chapter or chapters that can be broken down to make a comic strip(连环漫画). Or students select a part of the book to make into a radio play. Many people hurt their backs when they try to lift heavy things from the floor. It is easy to hurt your back muscles when you pick up a heavy object. However, there is a correct way to lift things form the floor. If you pick up big or heavy objects correctly, you probably will not hurt your back.
To lift something from the floor correctly, first bend your knees and squat down. Keep your back straight. Don’t bend over from your waist; keep your back and hips and waist in a line. If you bend over, the muscles in your lower back can become injured very easily. If you keep your back and hips straight, the muscles are stronger, because they have much more support. The other muscles can then help the lower back muscles.
As you squat down, try to get as close to the object as possible. For example, if you are going to pick up a heavy box, squat down directly in front of it; maybe you will have to spread your knees and legs. Put one knee on each side of the box. Remember at all times to keep your back straight.
Put your hands under the object that is in front of you, between your knees. To lift the object, you should stand up slowly. Use your leg muscles in order to stand up. In other words, lift with your legs, not with your back.
65.To lift a heavy object mainly depends on ___.

Over time, the Declaration of Independence has deeply affected American history. Phrases from the document such as “all men are created equal” quickly took on a life of their own or were applied to groups that the authors never expected. Blacks quickly used this language to challenge slavery in the United States. The ideal of equality led Northern states to free slaves in 1780s, 1790s, and early 1800s. black and white abolitionists(废奴主义者) used the ideal that all men were created equal to attack slavery in the South before the Civil War. And civil rights supporters gathered behind Jefferson’s words in their fight against racism in the 1950s and 1960s. in 1848 the delegates(代表)to the Seneca Falls women’s rights conference proclaimed that “all men and women are created equal”, and the 20th-centruy feminist (女权主义者) did the same.
Other groups have focused on the document’s defence of the right to rebel against an unjust government. The declaration of Independence had a deep effect on the French Revolution; its influence was strong in the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, adopted by the National Assembly of France in 1789. in the 19th century the principles of the declaration were adopted by various Latin American movements fighting for independence from European colonial powers. The declaration influences more recent struggles for national identity (身份): Vietnamese Communist Leader HoChi Mink, for example, used the American document as one of the basic principles behind his fight to establish an independent and unified Vietnam.
The document itself continues to be an important symbol for the American people. Today, each page of the Declaration of Independence is protected. Over one million Americans view the document each year in Washington, D,C. , where it is displayed along with the constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights.

Magic is believed to have begun with the Egyptians, in 1700BC. A magician named Dedi of Dedsnefu was reported to have performed for the pharaoh, or the king. He was also known to have entertained the slaves who built the pyramids. The “Cups and Balls” trick which he was particularly good at is still performed by magicians all over the world today.
The ancient Greeks and Romans were also fascinated(使着迷) by the idea of magic. Actually, one of their main interests was the art of deception. This explains why at that time the priests (牧师) even built magic devices into their temples. These devices made it possible for doors to open by themselves and wine to flow magically out of statues’ mouths. This was done mainly to convince people that the priests were powerful.
Magic, however, was not well accepted before the 1800s. Magicians were thought of as freaks(非正常人)and were only allowed to perform in a circus. It was in the 19th century that the magician Robert Houdin came along and changed people’s views and attitudes about magic. It was also because of Robert Huoudin that many magicians were able to add Dr. or MD to their names. Today magicians try hard to find new ways to show their practiced skills. Magic is now entertainment for families all over the world.

Dear editor,
Last year I wrote you a letter (published in your paper)about serious pollution in Huaihe River. Our city government paid great attention to it and accepted my suggestions about stopping pollution of the Huaihe River and improve our surroundings. They have closed a chemical works which polluted the Huaihe River most, and moved and rebuilt a paper factory. We are strengthening the protection of nature and the fight (struggle) against pollution. Now birds have returned to both sides of the Huaihe River and people can eat fresh fish from the Huaihe River. We have planted a lot of young trees and are raising flowers to make our surroundings green. A water works has been built recently so that we now drink and use tap water instead of river water. We are living a clean and happy life.

Throughout the history of life, there have been many major upheavals(剧变) in which whole groups of animals were replaced by others. Perhaps the most famous was the replacement of the dinosaurs by the mammals 65 million years ago. Anther major change occurred 150 million years earlier, when the dinosaurs took over the position of dominance that had been held for 80 million years by mammal like reptiles(爬行动物).
What triggered these great upheavals? Scientific thinking about the various factors that might have been responsible for such replacements has undergone some significant changes of its own. At times, for example, scientists have suggested that mammals caused the extinction of the dinosaurs by eating their eggs or by competing for the same food resources. Now , however, most people are convinced that the mammals played only a minor role, if any(largely because both groups had lived side by side for millions of years), and that, instead, environmental change was primarily responsible. The mammals apparently sat around for 150 million years in the Mesozoic undergrowth until , with the extinction of the dinosaurs, they had their opportunity to radiate into the available niches(处所).

You say “I wish I could help you but I’m short of money myself.” In fact, you are not short of money but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debts and you don’t want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this really a lie?
Professor Jerald Jullion of the University of Southern California has made a scientific study of lying. According to him, women are better liars than men, particularly when telling a “white lie” , such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks awful. However, this is only one side of the story. Others researchers say that men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intention of fulfilling . This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at; the lie from which the liar hopes to profit or gain in some way .
Research has also been done into the changes of people’s behavior in a number of small , clearly unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the time they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. To the trained observer they are saying “I wish I were somewhere else now”. They also tend to touch certain parts of the face more often, in particular the nose. One explanation of this may be that lying causes a slight increase in blood pressure. The nose is very sensitive to such changes and the increased pressure makes it itch(发痒).
Another gesture which gives liars away is that the writer Desmond Morris in his book Man watching calls “the mouth cover”. He says there are several typical forms of this, such as covering part of the mouth with fingers, touching the upper-lip or putting a finger of the hand at one side of the month. Such a gesture can be understood as an unconscious attempt on the part of the liar to stop himself or herself from lying.
Of course, such gestures as rubbing the nose or covering the mouth, or moving about in a chair cannot be taken as proof that the speaker is lying. They simply tend to occur more frequently in this situation. It is not one gesture alone that gives the context in which the lie is told.
63.According to the passage , a “white lie” seems to be a lie ___.

It doesn’t matter whether you believe rap(说唱) words have a lot of meat in them. McDonald’s does.
And now the fast food giant is prepared to put its money where music stars’ mouths are , by paying rap artists who mention the Big Mac in their songs $5 every time their work is played on the radio down south.
At first glance it seems like the kind of offer that would be instantly rejected by top artists like 50 Cent or Snoop Dogg. But they’ve done product placement words in some of their music before, and if a song were to become a huge hit, that $5 fee could rapidly turn into a small fortune.
The idea is part of the restaurant chain’s marketing policy to reach a younger crowd. Under the deal , the company would be able to refuse any words that it felt was unsuitable, but would leave the method of including the mention up to the individual artist.
McDonald’s has hired a marketing firm called Maven Strategies to mix the meat with the beat.
And it’s familiar subject for the ad specialists--- they managed to get a Seagram’s gin product mentioned in five hit songs last year, which is what attracted the food giant in the first place.
Product placement is becoming an increasingly common tool for advertisers in movie and TV, as more consumers selectively pick up commercials simply by hitting the remote control during breaks in their favorite show.
They believe this latest Big Mac attack will be one message you can’t take no notice of.
But many groups are already upset by the McDonald’s plan, arguing the chain promotes childhood fatness with its fast food, and that having kids’ music heroes exactly sing its praises will not only fatten company bank account, but the younger generation as well.
72.The underlined word in the first paragraph “does” means ____.
A.believes B.matters C.has D.prepares
73.From the passage, we learn that ____.
A.It is McDonald’s that decides on how to get Big Mac added in words.
B.MacDonald’s request of words placement was turned down before.
C.MacDonald’s comes up with the idea from the success of another business.
D.MacDonald’s is getting used to such a common advertising tool.
74.The reason for the use of product placement by MacDonald’s is that ___.
A.the idea is well accepted among fast food eaters
B.people like to watch product placement advertisement
C.it is a popular tool with advertisers
D.young generation consider it as a show they like best.
75.Which of the following statements is true?
A.Some groups are against McDonald’s plan for its bad influence on child educating.
B.The food company sings praises for kid’s music heroes.
C.50 Cent or Snoop Dogg will get rich if they eat at McDonald’s too often.
D.Singers act as a role model for youngsters in many ways.

Elizabeth Blackwell was born in England in 1821, and moved to New York City when she was ten years old. One day she decided that she wanted to become a doctor. That was nearly impossible for a woman in the middle of the nineteenth century. After writing many letters to medical schools, she was finally accepted by a doctor in Philadelphia. So determined was she, that she taught in school and gave music lessons to earn money for her schooling.
In 1849, after graduation from medical school, she decided to further her education in Paris.
Upon returning to the United States, she found it difficult to start her own practice because she was a woman. Dolan began swimming at age 5, because his older sister Kathleen was a swimmer. “Whatever she did, I wanted to beat her,” he says. While he says he was a “pool rat” as a child, he didn’t aggressively pursue swimming until his freshman year in high school. Golf was his favorite sport then--- he played for his high school team until his junior year.
Dolan grew up in Arlington, Virginia, and his early development as a swimmer was under the guidance of Rick Curl. At the University of Michigan, he trained under head coach Jon Urabancheck, who helped mold Dolan into an Olympic champion. During breaks from school, Dolan would reunite with Curl, and in the lead-up to Sydney, he has returned home full time. In April 2000, Dolan told the Detroit Free Press, “My whole career I had gone back and forth, but now I’m spending the whole year with Rick. But where I go and swim, I’ll always be linked to Michigan and to Jon, just as I will to Rick.
Dolan was 18 when he entered the 1994 World Championships. He remembers being near to all the big stars and noticing they were staring at him. He won the 400 IM title in world record time. He successfully defended hid world title four years later in Perth, Australia.
Dealing with asthma and poor air quality, Tom Dolan could barely breathe at the 1996 Atlanta Games. But as the reigning world Champion and world record-holder in the 400-meter individual medley, he was determined to win Olympic gold. “My legs were burning pretty bad, and I couldn’t get any oxygen. I knew it was between me and Eric, and I just gave it everything I had coming into the wall,” says Dolan. He touched first, just ahead of fellow American Eric, who got the silver.

As is true in all cultures, Americans first hear music in the context of family life. Much if that music comes from the records on the family radio or television, and this “canned music” is especially important in developing children’s musical taste. People often say they were very strongly influenced by the kind of music they heard before they were old enough to have their own records or choose the station on the family radio. There is usually some live music in the family as well. Many mothers and grandmothers sing lullabies(催眠曲), for example. These can be important since in America, as elsewhere, lullabies not only lull a baby to sleep but promise, praise and teach cultural values. Sometimes lullabies are the only songs in a foreign language that American children with strong racial backgrounds hear since people often fall back on old, familiar languages for intimate songs.
Another important family context is the automobile, where families learn songs and has become one of the basic centers of family experience, and it is one of the important place where the family gathers for an extended period of time without outside disturbance. The family used to have to choose between making their own music in the car or being force-fed by the radio, but the recent inventions of automobile cassette recorders and eight-track playback machines allow a family to have more control over what they hear when they drive.

At no time in history has there been such a mass movement of people from the countryside to the city as is happening now. By the year 2030, it is estimated that more than two thirds of the world’s population will be living in cities, twice as many as today. This means that the problems faced by cities today ---overcrowding, poor housing, unemployment, poverty and lack of food and water --- will be twice as bad, unless we find solutions(解决方法) soon.
Another serious issue is how to provide good transportation for their citizens. Many of the world’s major cities are already struggling with out-of-date transport infrastructures(基本设施). How can they deal with the additional demands?
London is a good example. Its enlargement was made possible by the invention of the steam engine, which powered the world’s first underground railway. But its transport systems are now hopelessly out- of- date and need urgent modernization. London’s future success depends very much on developing better public transport.
Over a million people travel into central London every day from outside the city. They, together with the people who live in London , want a public transport system that is efficient, safe and environmentally friendly. What they often get, however, falls far short of that ideal. Passengers complain about cost and pollution, while businesses worry about the problems their staff have in getting to work on time. Yes, the proportion of London households that own a car grew from just over ten percent in the early 1950s to over sixty percent today.
As the city has become increasingly crowded and polluted, there has been a growing realization that action must be taken soon.
69.The passage is mainly written to tell us that ____.

Feeling tried lately? But the doctor says he cannot find anything wrong with you? Perhaps he sends you to a hospital, but all the advanced equipment there shows that there is nothing wrong. Then consider this, you might be in a state of sub-health.
Sub-health, also called the third state or gray state, is explained as a borderline state between health and disease. According to an investigation by the National Health Organization, over 45 percent of sub-healthy people are middle-aged or elderly. The percentage is even higher among people who work in management positions as well as students around exam time. Symptoms(症状) include a lack of energy, depression, slow reactions, insomnia(失眠) , and poor memory. Other symptoms include shortness of breath, sweating and aching in the waist and legs. How to prevent from sub-health, according to some medical experts, is to form good living habits, alternate work with rest, exercise regularly. As for meals, people are advised to eat less salt and sugar. They should also eat more fresh vegetables, fruits, and fish because they are rich in nutritional elements---vitamins and other elements (that are important to the body). Nutrition experts point out that it is not good to eat too much at one meal because it may cause unhealthy changes in the digestive tract. They also say that a balanced diet is very helpful to prevent sub-health.

Bending over his radio, the perturbed Japanese soldier adjusted his earphone. What were those strange sounds that he couldn’t recognize? What tricks were the Americans on the other side of the Pacific island up to this time? He motioned hurriedly for an interpreter(翻译).
Miles away in a clearing surrounded by dense jungle, a group of soldiers stood guard as American Indian soldiers quickly translated messages from English into another language. In moments, one of these specially trained soldiers stepped to radio, adjusted the frequency dials, and began his second transmission in the language of the Navaho.
The Japanese never were able to crack(破译) the code of the Navaho Indian during the Second World War. Many Americans lives were saved because no one in the Japanese Army was able to speak the language of the American Indians who served their country so well.

The newspaper seller was a clean, neat man, of about forty with a rather serious, unsmiling face. He didn’t speak much to the customers or to his helpers, but when he did he spoke slowly and quietly, as if to himself. He believed in efficiency, not conversation. and this was how the office workers, rushing to catch their trains, preferred it.
It had been a good day. Lunch-time had been warm and sunny, and many people had bought magazines to read outside with their sandwiches. Now it was cold rainy, and people wanted an evening paper for a cheerless joyless journey ahead and a dull evening indoors.
At 6:30, with the main rush over, he started to collect the money together and count it. Then he left the stand and went home. It was the assistant’s turn this evening to look after it till eight o’clock, when it would be packed away for the night. His large white Mercedes was in the private car park of a large government building. He’d parked there for six months, pretending to be part of a heating firm working in the building. They would find out about him soon, and he’d have to park in a garage again, which was annoying. Their charges were far too high. A couple of junior clerks, regular customers, happened to see him getting into his car. “must be a lot of money in papers, eh?” one of them shouted. He just smiled coldly in reply, and got into the car, placing the bags of money on the floor.
He thought about the clerks on the way home. Like the majority of his customers, despite their white shirts and dark suits, they probably made in a week as much as he could make in a good day.

When we think of creative people the names that probably come to mind are those of men such as Leonardo da Vinci, Albert Einstein, and Pablo Picasso, i.e. great artists, inventors and scientists---a selected and exceptionally gifted body of men with rare talent and genius. The tendency to regard creativity and imaginative aspects inherent(固有的) in the solution of many of the tasks we regularly have to face---the discovery and development of new methods and techniques, the improvement of old methods, existing inventions and products.
Everyone has creative ability to some degree. Creative thinking involves posing oneself a problem and then originating or inventing a solution along new and unconventional lines. It involves drawing new analogies(类似), discovering new combinations, and new applications(应用) of things that are already known. It follows, then, that a creative person will exhibit great intellectual curiosity and imagination. He will be alert and observant with a great intellectual curiosity and imagination. He will be alert and observant with a great store of information which he will be able to sort out and combine, in the solution of problems. He will be emotionally receptive to new ideas and will be less interested in facts than in their implications. Most important of all, he will be able to communicate uninhibitedly(不受约束的) and will not be too concerned about other people’s reaction to his apparently “crazy” notions. People called the Wright brothers mad but it did not stop them from becoming the first men to construct and fly a heavier –than-air craft.

This is one of the most tasty ways of cooking carrots, and also the most sensible. Root vegetables easily absorb fat. By cooking not in water but in butter, you help to conserve nourishment.
You need a thick saucepan with a really tightfit lid. (This is essential because the carrots cook in the steam from their own moisture, and they produce so little steam that none of it must escape.)
COOKING TIME
Sliced old carrots: 10-20 minutes; whole new carrots: up to 45 minutes
INGREDIENTS
Carrots , about 1 teaspoon of butter, seasoning, a very small amount of sugar, chopped parsley(西芹).
METHOD
1. “Scrub” and peel the carrots and cut older carrots into even slices, not too thick. New carrots can be left whole.
2. Heat enough butter to cover the bottom of the pan well. When it is hot but not smoking, add the carrots.
3. Add salt and pepper, but not too much because , in this way of cooking, none of the seasoning’s flavor will be lost.
4. Cover with lid and cook over a gentle heat, shaking the pan occasionally so that the carrots do not stick or burn. Sliced carrots will take 10-20 minutes to become tender according to thickness. Whole new carrots may take up to 45 minutes.
5. Sprinkle lightly with the sugar.… this helps to bring out the natural flavor of the carrots. Also sprinkle with coarsely(大块地) chopped parsley if you like the extra color and flavor.
67.A tightfit lid is needed to ____.
A.prevent steam from escaping B.prevent the carrots from escaping
C.conserve sauce D.let moisture escape
68.The underlined word “scrub” means ____.
A.wash with a brush B.scrape with a knife

C.its taste will not be lost D.not too much salt and pepper will not be lost
70.How long will the thickly sliced carrots take to become tender?
A.20 minutes B.10-20 minutes C.10 minutes D.45 minutes

Harvard University is on the both sides of the Charies River. The old institution of higher learning in the United States was founded in 1636. In 1638 it was named for John Harvard, its first founder. During the 1640s the college was enlarged although it was short of money. Meant to be an institution for the education of Puritan ministers(清教徒牧师), it grew to be an institution of general education, and new and more subjects and policies(政策) were introduced. In the 18th century, particularly under John Leverett(1708-1724), the number of the students and campus equipment increased while the religious(宗教) color decreased. In its early years, the college was largely supported by the English colony and the New England community as a whole, but support soon came in the form of gifts, and in 1823 the state money was received for the last time. Under Charles W. Eliot, the college became a great modern University. Its basic courses improved and enlarged, the graduate School was set up for those who finished their four-year undergraduate study, and the law and medical schools were recognized. Eliot is also famous for his introduction of the elective system at Harvard. Harvard also has schools of business administration(1980), medicine(1782), public health(1922), and dental health(1941). Radcliffe College for women is connected with Harvard; its students are taught by Harvard professors and receive diplomas given by Harvard. To understand the marketing concept(概念) , it is only necessary to understand the difference between marketing and selling. Not too many years ago, most industries fixed their attention mainly on the production of goods, and then depended on “ persuasive salesmanship” to move as much of these goods and then change them into money.
Marketing on the other hand, focuses on the wants of customers. It begins with first understanding the preferences and demands of consumers(消费者) and then producing goods that will satisfy them. This eye-on-the-consumer way is known as the marketing concept, which simply means that instead of trying to sell whatever is easiest to produce or buy for resale, the makers and dealers first try to find out what the consumer wants to buy.
This concept does not mean that business is friendly or that consumer satisfaction is more important than profit(利润) in a company. Successful businessmen and producers , however, recognize that the surest route to profit is through understanding and satisfying customers. A striking example of the importance of satisfying customers presented itself in mid-1985, when Coco-Cola changed the flavor of its drink. The non-acceptance of the new flavour by a large majority of the public brought about quick return of the classic Coke, which was then marketed alongside the new .King customer ruled!

The 77th Annual Academy Awards, or Oscars, takes place at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 27th, 2005. this is only the second time that the award have been held in February, the date traditionally being the third Sunday in March.
Piopocs are the favoured genre this year in the men’s Best Actor category. Leonardo Dicaprio plays millionaire adventurer Howard Hughes in Finding never land. Meanwhile, in the Best Actress category Hilary Swank(Million Dollar Baby) is the only nominee(被提名者) to have won an Oscar before. The others, including Annette Bening and Kate Winslet are all hoping to pick up their first Oscar this year.
But none of this year’s nominees can compete with Taum O’Neal , who at 10 years old, became the youngest person to have won an acting Oscar (in the film Paper Moon in 1973).
Three years after Tatum O’Neal broke all records as the youngest winner, comedian George Nurms became the oldest winner at the age of 80 for his role in The Sunshine Boys. Unfortunately for George, his “oldest winner” title was lost to Jessica Tandy a few years later when she won her second Oscar at the age of 82.
Cate Blanchett has nominated(提名) in the Best Supporting Actress category this year for her role n The Aviator as actress Katharine Hephurn, the person who has won more acting Oscars than anyone else in the history of the awards. Hepburn won four Oscars between 1932 and 1981 and was nominated for 12 overall. Bad boy Jack Nicholson has also been nominated 12 times but has only managed to pick up three prizes. Maybe next year, Jack, however, the undoubted “daddy” of them all is none other tan Walt Disney, who walked away with 26 Academy Awards and 59 nominations over his lifetime.

More than 40 years ago, John Williams gave away all of his belongings and went off to the mountains to live the way people lived 100 years ago. For food he traps wild animals, fishes in the rivers, and plants whatever he can. John lives in a cabin he made by hand, out of trees he chopped down with an ax. Though he has no relatives that he knows of, he does have a deer he raised from a fawn. The deer lives in the house in the winter and goes with John when he goes into the forest for food. Nobody lives within fifty miles of his cabin in the mountains and John has not been out of the mountains during the entire forty years. One day last year I hiked in to see how John lives. It was like going back in time. There were no roads, no stores, no noise, no pollution, not even a post office.
Most notable of all, there were no people and that’s just the way John Williams wants to keep his part of the world ---without people. But there is a paradox in his story. John is an educated man. He has books and nobody knows how he got them. Mostly he reads about his world, the forest, the animals, the plants, and the mountains. He has seen airplanes flying overhead but does not want to know about them. For him, electricity is lightning, not light bulbs, refrigerators, televisions, or washing machines. John Williams is 85 years old and has not had a sick day in his life. He attributes his long life to the fact that he has nothing to do with people and in order that he might enjoy many more years of health, happiness, and solitude, I will not tell you where his kingdom lies. There is no room there for you or me.

Since life is short and the world is wide, the sooner you start exploring it, the better. Soon enough the time will come when you are too tied to move farther than the terrace of the best hotel. Go now.
No need, you may say, to tell me that. But what I do need to tell you is that you will need with a surprising amount of opposition the moment you try to set out. Rubbish, you will reply. More people go abroad nowadays than ever before; never has travel, particularly among the young, been wiser with international exchanges. Perhaps not; but none of this, my dear young friends, is travel. Travel is not going on a round coach trip for $67 in all, or spending ten days at a hotel by the sea. Travel is when you want to see how much money and resources you have and then set out, alone or with chosen friends, to make an unhurried journey to a distant goal without a set date for your return.
Real travel, then, is independence in action and is not liked by most parents. They don’t mind your going in a school party to Athens, because they know just where you are and when you’ll be back, and they can, therefore, permit you the imagination of freedom without for one second letting you beyond their control. But what they cannot bear is that you should travel all on your own, without giving them your address and return date. In fact, their fears are quite reasonable because that shows how much they love you. So in order to enjoy real travel and at the same time put your parents’ mind at ease. It would be really important for you to bear the following advice in mind.
68.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
A.People travel more than before
B.Young people are discouraged to travel abroad
C.People should not go on round coach trip for $67
D.educational visits should not be encouraged as they are not real travel.
69.According to the writer, real travel means _____.
A.telling your parents nothing about the travel
B.not knowing where you want to go
C.traveling to a distant goal in an unhurried manner
D.traveling without any plan
70.Your parents allow you to travel in a school party because ____.
A.they want you to be truly free B. you are still under their control
C.they don’t have time to travel with you D. they know it’s good for you.
71.According to the writer, when you do real traveling , you should ____.
A.never mind how worried your parents are
B.give your parents your address and return date
C.tell your parents details about your travel
D.not let your parents worry about you

IS IT TIME TO GET –MP3?
Your computer has been playing music for years, one CD at a time. Now hundreds of songs can be stored in your PC if they’re the MP3 format.
What is it?
MP3 compresses (压缩) music into small computer--- friendly files. You access MP3 music several ways: tunes can be downloaded from websites that have converted (转变) vast music libraries into MP3. Once MP3 music is on your PCs hard drive, you can play it through your computer’s speakers, “burn” it onto blank CDs or swap(交换) MP3 files with friends using e-mail.
How much?
Software needed to play and convert MP3 music is often free. It comes preinstalled(预先安装) on most computers or can be downloaded from many websites, including MP3.com. Some MP3 sites are free. Just type “MP3 sites” into any search engine. Compact portable MP3 players start at around $50 and can hold hundreds of songs. A blank CD on which you can record music is about a dollar.
Advantages
MP3 turns your home PC into a jukebox(自动唱机). Tiny MP 3 players are the size of a deck of cards, making it easy to take hundreds of songs with you.
Disadvantages
You may find that music at many sites is limited. And some only allow you to listen rather than download offerings. Others let you download music that then can’t be copied to MP3 players. And a growing number of new CDs make it impossible to copy songs to a computer.
72.How can you get MP3 music?
A.by turning your home PC into a jukebox.
B.by taking your own music or songs with you.
C.by copying songs to a PC through the speakers
D.by downloading from websites which have converted music libraries into MP3.
73.Which is NOT true to the passage?
A.Software needed to play and convert MP3 music is often free of charge.
B.MP3 music can be “burned” onto blank CDs or swapped with friends by e-mail.
C.MP3 music can be taken along while traveling.
D.A greater number of new CDs make it possible to copy songs to a computer.
74.Which of the following is the most expensive?
A.Software needed to play MP3 music B.Music from MP3 sites
C.An MP3 player D.A blank CD
75.What is the closest meaning of the underlined word “Burn”?
A.Copy B.Play C.Store D.Change

Dear fellow students,
I’m here in front of you with a heavy heart. Because I have been shocked by the terrible loss of lives from the earthquakes and the tsunamis in the Indian Ocean, which hit Southeast and South Asia on December 26, 2004.
The number of the deaths in the disaster is up to 160,000 and millions of people need immediate aid. The disaster caused great loss to the affected countries. The Red Cross Society of China has so far received 160 million yuan in donation for tsunami-hit countries.
In the fact of this sudden disaster, the governments and people there have displayed an admirable level of confidence, courage and capability to save themselves from danger. Merciless as the tsunami was, we human beings are compassionate and caring. As a member of the great Chinese people, we have the responsibility and duty to work with stricken countries and the international community hand in hand and shoulder to shoulder to help people there in rebuilding their beautiful homes. So let’s save the pocket money and donate it to this great war against nature.
Thank you!

Ethanol(乙醇);Clean and Cheap Fuel
Many Americans concerned about air pollution are demanding cleaner supplies of energy. The demand has resulted in increased research about ethanol fuel. Ethanol is an alcohol that can be mixed with gas. It burns up most of the pollutants(污染物)in gas. It replaces some of the chemicals that are known to cause cancer, and it can be produced in the United States.
Some experts say that in the future ethanol will replace some of the oil imported into America. Today ethanol is less than one percent of total American fuel supply. The head of the National Corn Growers Association, Kieve Hard, says ethanol will provide twenty-five percent of the fuel supply by 2010. the organization is involved in the production of ethanol because it can be made from corn.
One company in the American Midwest says it is starting to produce ethanol because of demands from people and from the government. The Congress approved the Clean Air Act in 1990. the company says this means the market for ethanol will expand. The company is a major producer of corn starch(淀粉)that can be used to make ethanol.
At Texas A and M University Professor Mark Holzapple produces ethanol form materials found in solid waste. He has developed a way to turn materials like paper into simple sugar. He then uses yeast(酵母)to turn the sugar into ethanol. Professor Holzapple says two hundred liters of ethanol fuel can be produced from one ton of solid waste.
A professor at the university of Arkansas, John Geddie, is exploring another way to make ethanol. He is using acids on paper material. He says a large factory could produce ethanol form waste paper at a cost about the same as the cost of producing gasoline.
Environmentalists support the use of ethanol because it turns solid waste into a useful product. Professor Holzapple says law makers in industrial nations need to support the development of this clean, less expensive fuel of the future.
59.Why does the interest in ethanol fuel increase in the United States according to the passage?
A.Ethanol products are known to cause cancer
B.Ethanol can remove some harmful pollutants form gas.
C.The production of ethanol is protected by law
D.Ethanol-fueled automobiles are cheaper than gas-fueled ones.

A.completely take the place of oil in the next century
B.also involve a series of environmental problems
C.play an increasingly important role in the future fuel supply
D.reduce the supply of grains used to produce food

B.It associates with the use of advanced equipment
C.It will improve the use of heat from exhaust gases

Culture determines what kind of thinking is important and what kind is not so important. Learners use the language, tools and practice of their culture to learn concepts. Although students have their individual learning styles, their learning styles are often combined with cultural values. For example, Navajo children often learn first by observing and listening . Then , when ready, they continue learning on their own in groups and under the supervision(监视)of an adult. In this way, the children learn all the skills they need. Navajo children speak very little during this process. In contrast, many African-American children learn effectively by acting and performing. They like classroom activities such as oral presentations, role-plays, and performances. Lots of talking is useful for these students. Another ways of learning is through reading and writing. Asian students generally need writing to support their learning, and therefore do well in classes where there is lots of writing. It is common to see Japanese students pay special attention to the spelling of words they have learned. They are more comfortable seeing new materials than hearing them. Koreans are believed to be the most visual(can be seen) learners. So, although learning styles greatly determine how a person takes in new materials , one’s culture also influences how he learns.

As the pace of life continues to increase, we are fast losing the art of relaxation. Once you are in the habit of rushing through life, being on the go from morning till night, it is hard to slow down. But relaxation is essential for a healthy mind and body.
Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. In fact, it is not the bad thing as it is often supposed to be. A certain amount of stress is important to provide motivation and give purpose to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health.
The amount of stress a person can withstand(承受) depends very much on the individual. Some people are not afraid of stress and such characters are obviously prime(主要的)material for managerial responsibilities. Others lose heart at the first signs of unusual difficulties. When exposed to stress in whatever form, we react both chemically and physically. In fact we make a choice between “flight or fight” and in more primitive(原始的)days the choices made the difference between life and death. The crises(危机)we meet today are unlikely to be so extremely, but however little the stress, it involves the same response. It is when such a reaction last long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes endangered. Such serious conditions as high blood pressure and heart diseases have established links with stress. Since we can’t remove stress from our lives, we need to find ways to deal with it.
72.People are finding less and less time for relaxing themselves because ____.
A.they do not know how to enjoy themselves

Usually a company’s troubles are over when it introduces a new product that flies off the
shelves. But the new Play Station Portable(PSP) may cause a problem for Sony Corp. that other
business wish they had: whether it can produce enough product to meet the demand.
Stores in the United States such as Best Buy and Circuit City said they would sell out their
first stocks of the tiny gaming device. Here in New Zealand gamers who just couldn’t wait to get
their hands on the new product which costs about $300, lined up outside local electronics stores
before the product was officially introduced at one minute after midnight Thursday.
Sony management said three million units would be shipped out worldwide by the end of the
month. Game fans will have 24 stores to pick from and that number will grow rapidly before the holiday season arrives. This gadget is so popular because, apart from being able to play your favorite video game on the subway on your way into work, you can listen to music , download photos and watch movies on a new complete mini disc format. Disney has plans to release (发行) a number of movies for the PSP, which is expected to compete with Apple’s highly popular iPod.
Sony is hoping the new product will ensure the company keeps bringing in profits while it makes some big changes to its central electronics and movie businesses. Clearly as the prices of DVD
recorders, camcorders and flat screen TVs continue to fall, so do the company’s earnings.
56.What is the trouble for Sony company?
A.The game devices that are on sale for only $300.
B.The product that remains on the shelves
C.Game lover’s high demand that can’t be met
D.More popularity of Apple’s iPod
57.From the third paragraph we can know that ____.
A.in the US many stores prefer iPod
B.Best Buy and Circuit City have no PSPs in stock
C.in New Zealand PSPs are displayed outside the stores before Thursday
D.PSP had a bright future in many countries
58.What will Sony do to deal with its problem?
A.Close its stores in the US B.Change its “on sale” policy greatly
C.Put more products on the shelves D.Open more stores worldwide
59.The underlined word can be replaced by ____.
A.store B.stock C.PSP D.iPod

They cannot vote which nations should have a seat on the United Nations Security Council(安
理会), but ordinary people have shown their feelings. By Tuesday afternoon, over 11.5 million
people in and outside China had signed an online petition(请愿) saying Japan should not succeed in
its bid(申请) for an everlasting seat on the Security Council.
The loud call is due to the historical facts in World War II. Some Japanese politicians said
their country is ready to play a more active role in global affairs, and their country’s contribution
can no longer be limited to financial aspects.
The petition by 11.5 million people tells Japan that money alone cannot buy their hearts.
A new history textbook that a right-wing Japanese organization has submitted(服从) for
official agreement goes so far as to paint Japan as a “victim” in World War II. Its authors even say
that China started all the wars between the two countries.
Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi turned down an invitation to a grand party in
Moscow on May 9 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the end of War World II, Koizumi”s absence
will do nothing but encourage more probes(追究) into his country’s historical baggage.
Japanese politicians continue to visit the Yasukuni Shrine . Wartime leader and war criminal
Kideki Tojo, as well as five other hanged war criminals, are buried at the shrine. They talk about
peace during the visits and ask their Asian neighbours to understand Japanese culture, which requires them to visit Shinto shrines to mark seasonal celebrations. But they don’t see the pains that the Japanese invasion(侵略) brought on other Asian countries. How can a nation sleep with such a history on its conscience(良心)? The amount of money Japan gives the United Nations does not necessarily give the country the role in international affairs. Neither will an everlasting seat on the Security Council free Japan from its historical baggage.
60.According to some Japanese politicians their visits to Shinto Shrines are due to ____.
A.the fact that the six World War II criminals were buried there
B.the intention that Japan wants to get an everlasting seat on the Security Council
C.the requirement of Japanese cultures
D.the probes of the war criminals
61.The 11.5 million people signed an online petition to ____.
A.stop Japan from bidding an everlasting seat on the Security Council
B.express their feelings that they didn’t want Japan to win its bid
C.honor the people who died in World War II
D.support the idea that Japan should give the UN more money.
62.In a new Japanese history book _____.
A.the Japanese are described as right-wing people
B.many victims submitted the agreement in World War II
C.Japanese government has signed the agreement officially
D.China is considered to have been responsible for the war.
63.Which of the following descriptions about Japan is NOT true?
A.The government refused an invitation to the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II
B.It wants to get an everlasting seat on the Security Council
C.It wants more probes into its historical baggage.
D.It gives the UN much money.

For millions of people, the American dream of owning a home seems to be slipping out of reach.
“Maybe young couples can no longer afford to buy a ready-made house as their parents did, “ says 40-year-old building instructor Pat Hennin. “But they can still have a home. Like their pioneer ancestors, they can build it themselves , and at less than half the cost of a ready-made house.
The owner-builders came from every occupational group, although surprisingly few are professional building workers. Many take the plunge with little or no experience . “I learned how to build my house from reading books,” says John Brown, who built a six-room home for $25,000 in High Falls, New Jersey. “If you have patience and the carpentry(木匠) skill to make a bookcase, you can build a house.” An astonishing 50 percent of these owner builders hammer every nail, lay every pipe, and wire every switch with their own hands. The rest contract for some parts of the task. But even those who just act as contractors and finish the insides of their homes can save from 30 percent to 45 percent of what a ready-made home would cost.
One survey revealed that 60 percent of owner-builders also design their homes. Many others buy commercial house planes for less than $100 or use plans available from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

We all associate colors with feeling and attitudes. In politics dark blue often means “tradition”, and red means “social change”. But blue can also mean sadness( I’m feeling blue), white is often for purity, although in China white is worn at weddings and black for funerals. Advertisers are aware of the importance of selecting colors according to the way people react to them. Soap powders come in white and light blue packets (clean and cold, like ice); cereals often come in brown packets (like wheat fields), but cosmetics(化妆品) never come in brown jars(dirty?)
Where do these ideas come from? Max Luscher from the University of Geneva believes that in the beginning life was dictated by two factors beyond our control: night brought with it the possibility of action, and increase in the metabolic rate, thus providing us with energy and initiative. Dark blue , therefore, is the color of quiet and passivity, bright yellow , the color of hope and activity.
In prehistoric times, activity as a rule took one of two forms: either we were hunting and attacking, or we were being hunted and defending ourselves against attack. Attack is universally represented by the color red; self-preservation by its complement green.
72.Which of the following is NOT true about the color of dark blue?
A.It brings tragedy B.it means tradition
C.it represents night D.it indicates quietness
73.Soap powders come in white and light blue packets to ____.
A.resemble ice B.show quality C.suggest purity D.attract customers
74.In Luscher’s view, which of the following colors is connected with defence?
A.Red B.Blue C.Dark D.Green
75.According to the passage, what kind of people would probably favor yellow? People who are ____.
A.passive and conservative B. creative and aggressive

Dear Peter
How nice to hear from you again. How nice to hear from you again. You want to know what is going on in our school. In short, things have been improving since the school began to carry on exploring study. In the past, the teachers always kept on explaining the points in class. We students just listened and took notes. But now we often discuss and try to solve the problems raised by the teachers or ourselves. After class, we enjoy different kinds of activities instead of doing endless homework. For example, we can read what we are interested in. We can go to the library or surf the Internet for various kinds of information.
In a word, we are now masters of study, and we are happy.
Best wishes.
Yours,
Li Hua

Most of the guests in Brington’s Grand Hotel were asleep. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher , however, was still at work in the Napoleon Suite at 3 a. m., preparing her keynote address to the annual Party conference of Britain’s Conservative Party. “I just turned to do one final paper,” she said later. “And then it went off.” A deadly bomb, planted by the Irish Republican Army , ripped through the upper loors of the Victorian era hotel. Thatcher was not injured, but the toll of the attack was steep: 4 people killed and 31 injured.
It was the latest act of savagery(野蛮行为) in the 12 years since the IRA first took its campaign of terror across the Irish Sea into Britain. It was also a chilling escalation(升级)of the organization's crusade(运动): never before has the outlawed army tried to murder a British prime minister. After the attack the IRA issued a statement leaving no doubt that it was ready to raise the stakes in its battle over Ulster’s future: “Thatcher will now realize that British cannot occupy our country, torture(折磨) our prisoners and shoot our people in their own streets and get away with it.” The statement, signed with the IRA’s trademark pseudonym(假名), P. A good modern newspaper is an extraordinary piece of reading. It is remarkable first for what it contains: the range of news form local crime t international politics, from sport to business to fashion to science, and the range of comment and special features(特写) as well, from editorial page to feature articles and interviews to criticism of books, art, theatre and music. A newspaper is even more remarkable for the way one reads it: never completely , never straight through, but always by jumping from here to there, in and out glancing at one piece, reading another article all the way through , reading just a few paragraphs of the next. A good modern newspaper offers a variety to attract many different readers, but far more than any one reader is interested in. What brings this variety together in one place is its topicality(时事性), its immediate relation to what is happening in your world and your locality now. But immediately can the speed of production that goes with it mean also that much of what appears in a newspaper has no more than transient(短暂的) value. For all these reasons, reading newspapers efficiently which means getting what you want from them without missing things you need but without wasting time, demands skill and self-awareness as you modify and apply the techniques of reading.

If you’re not satisfied watching the tube at home, in the pub, or even on the street, cell phone producers are about to offer consumers another choice.
Soon you’ll be holding your favorite show in the palm of your hand. Mobile phones that pick up television signals are about to hit the market and experts predict handset makers will sell about 130,000of the devices by the end of the year.
Those figures are expected to shoot up soon after , according to a study released by the research group Informa, and it is predicted about 125 million mobile phone users will be watching television on their handsets by 2010.
At a time when people can text , email, and record still and moving imagines on their phones , it appears to be the logical next step. Samsung is the first company to roll out this new technology, but it’s not yet available commercially, and Nokia has said it will introduce its invention of the TV phone in the first part of 2006.
“The degree to which these networks will become either competitive or matching will eventually determine the fate of market,” analyst David McQueen said in the report.
The devices will be equipped with special chips(芯片) that will handle the TV signals. Phones also have chips to process mobile phone calls, music and streaming video links.
The difference between a TV signal and a streaming video link is that the video feed is on demand while the television transmission is broadcast to all users at the same time. The TV signals are also expected to be better quality.
68.You may be interested in the new product if you ____.

D.Chips that handle text, email and images are firstly developed by Samsung.
70.It seems that ____.
A.the market of the new mobile phone is determined by functions of the phone.

This hotel in the trees is famous in the world. People who know very little about Kenya, know of Treetops. When king George VI died, Princess Elizabeth was staying on the Treetops, and when she came down from there, “she succeeded to become the queen of the country”. This hotel in the middle of the forest, shows the pleasure of Africa. When you visit it, you will be sent into the heart of the forest by hotel buses, and then a guide , with a gun to protect you against big game, will go with you to the Treetops. Before and after dinner, for the whole night if you wish, you can sit on the corridor(走廊), watching animals come to the water pool. The earliest hotel Treetops was built round a large tree on the opposite side of the water, but that was destroyed by fire and the new hotel Treetops , which is built round several trees, is much bigger.
The dinning room at Treetops is small, and as the waiters cannot walk round to serve guests, a clever “Railway service” has been invented. Guests take their food as it passes slowly in front of them, along a line in the center of the table.
There are many animals around the Treetops. When you visit them, you can see:
---A long bodied , long ring tailed very active cat-like animal is a special one coming out at night. He hunts and eats anything he can overpower and is very destructive. He lives in the trees at Treetops. He comes for his food every evening. Do not get too near to him, as his teeth and claws can do you harm. These animals can be trained and become lovely pets.

Train Travel and Air Travel
Air travel has two advantages over train travel. First , it can save much time. We can fly from Beijing to Guangzhou just in two hours, but by train, we have to spend 58 hours or more. Second, air travel is more comfortable, because the plane flies so smoothly that we can rest well during the trip, while the train is crowded sometimes and passengers have to sit a long time, which makes them tired. But train travel also has its advantages. For example, traveling by train cost only 250 yuan while traveling by air will cost us 900 yuan. Besides this, outside the train’s windows, we can enjoy the views of many big cities, such as Jinan, Zhengzhou, Wuhan and Changsha. So I think different people like different ways of traveling.

My grandmother , a remarkable woman in some ways, lives alone in a North London flat, in a fiercely independent style. From time to time someone ferries her over to Northeast London to see my mother –her daughter---but usually it is my mother and the rest of the family who go to see her. She doesn’t seem to be lonely even though solitary. She reads a great deal--- mostly newspapers, and devours any information about royalty---not that she professes royalism; she is just eagerly curious about royal blood. She reads in Swedish, her mother tongue, fairly frequently , and continues to keep up a lively correspondence with her younger sister in Stockholm. She no longer sleeps very much, tending to rise in the morning to make tea.
She used to be something of a gastronome, but recently it has become almost irrelevant to her, even something of a nuisance(另人讨厌的东西). I remember when she would eye up salamis(一种香肠) and exotic cheese on the family table—now only birdseed keeps her going!

Most young people enjoy some form of physical activity. It may be walking cycling or swimming, winter skating or skiing in winter. It may be a game of some kind, football, hockey, golf or tennis. It may be mountaineering(登山).
Those who have a passion(热情) for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks on high mountains? This astonishment is caused probably by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure.
Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man-made rules, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of a different thing that it would be dangerous to ignore(忽略) , but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods.
If we compare mountaineering and other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game”. We should be mistaken in this. There are, it is true, no “matches” between “teams” of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork.
The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than men. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.
A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions are in their early twenties. But it is not unusual for a man of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they probably climb with more skill and less waste of efforts and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.
64.Mountaineering involves _____.
A.cold B.hardship C.physical risk D.all of the above
65.The difference between a sport and a game has something to do with the kind of ____.
A.activity B.rules C.uniform D.participants
66.Mountaineering can be called a team sport because ____.
A.it is an Olympic event B.teams compete against each other
C.there are 5 climbers on each team D.it depends on each other while climbing
67.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.Mountaineering Is Different from Golf and Football
B.Mountaineering
C.Mountaineering Is More Attractive than Other Sports
D.Mountain climbers

They are among the 250,000 people under the age of 25 who are out of work in the Netherlands, a group that is 40 percent of the nation’s unemployed. A storm of anger boils up at the government-sponsored(政府主办的) youth center, even among those who are continuing their studies.
“We study for jobs that don’t exist,” Nicollete Steggerda, 23, said. After thirty years of prosperity, unemployment among 10 member nations of the European Community has gone up to over 11 percent, affecting a total of 12.3 million people, and the number is climbing.
The bitter disappointment long expressed by British youths is spreading across the Continent. The title of a rock song “No Future” can now be seen written on the brick walls of closed factories in Belgium and France.
Recent surveys have found that the increasing argument in the last few years over the deployment(部署) in Europe of North Atlantic Treaty Organization missiles(导弹) and the possibility of nuclear war have clouded European youths’ confidence in the future.
One form of protest puts the responsibility for a country’s economic troubles on the large numbers of “guest workers” from Third World nations, people welcomed in Western Europe in the years of prosperity.
Young Europeans , brought up in an extended period of economic success and general stability(稳定) , seem to resemble(相似) Americans more than they do their own parents. Material enjoyment has given them a sense of expectation, even the right, to a standard of living that they see around them.
“And so we pass the days at the discos, or meet people at the café, and sit and stare,” said Isbella Gault. “There is usually not much conversation. You look for happiness. Sometimes you even find it.”

One of the qualities that most people admire in others is the willingness to admit one’s mistakes. It is extremely hard sometimes to say a simple thing like “I was wrong about that, and it is even harder to say ,”I was wrong, and you were right about that.”
I had an experience recently with someone admitting to me that he had made a mistake fifteen years ago. He told me he had been the manager of a certain store in the neighbourhood where I grew up, and he asked me if I remembered the egg cartons (in many countries , eggs are sold by the dozen and are put in cartons) .Then he related an incident and I began to remember unclearly the incident he was describing.
I was about eight years old at that time. I went into the store with my mother to do some shopping. On that particular day, I must have found my way to the food department where the incident took place.
There must have been a special sale on eggs that day because there were lots of eggs in dozen and half-dozen cartons. The cartons were put there or four feet high. I must have stopped in front of the poles of egg cartons. Just then a woman came by pushing her shopping cart and knocked off the cartons. For some reason, I decided it was up to me to put the eggs back together, so I went to work .
The manager heard the noise and came rushing over to see what had happened. When he appeared , I was on my knees looking at some of the cartons to see if any of the eggs broken, but to him it looked as though I was the one who just did it. He severely reprimanded me and wanted me to pay for any broken eggs. I tried to explain, but it did not good. Even though I quickly forgot all about the incident , it is plain that the manager did not.
72.According to the passage, many people will have a good opinion of those who ____.
A.often make mistakes but correct them in no time.
B.Have never made any mistakes
C.Admit their mistakes
D.Forget other people’s mistakes easily.

Dear Sir/Madam,
We are glad to know that you are going to take over and rebuild Tourists’ Hotel. The people living in Xiangyang Residential Area next to your hotel want to write to you about the problems we are facing. Our residential area sits next to your hotel. The traffic jams caused by cars and trucks coming into and out of the parking lot often result in inconveniences. And children also find it unsafe to go to school, which is opposite the hotel. We cannot put up with the noise from the Karaoke hall any more. Dirty water from the kitchen flows into our courtyard and it smells terrible. Have you ever heard the old saying “Never judge a book by its cover”?
This is a good rule to follow when trying to judge the intelligence of others. Some people have minds that shine in certain situations. A young man with an unusual gift in writing may find himself speechless in the presence of a pretty girl. When he speaks, he may not be able to find the right words. But don’t make mistakes of thinking him stupid. With a pen and paper, he can express himself better than anyone else. Other people may feel fool you into overestimating(过高估计) their intelligence by putting up a good front. A student who listens attentively and takes notes in class might make a favorable impression o his teachers. But when it comes to exams, he may score near the bottom of the class.
It all boils down to this ---- you can’t judge someone by appearance. The only way to determine a person’s intelligence is to get to know him. Then you can see how he reacts to different situations. Protecting the heart, warding off cancer, easing the pain of arthritis(关节炎)--- the list of Vietami E’s possible benefits keeps getting longer. Now, because of two new studies , some researchers say the nutrient is so critical for older people that everyone over 654 should consider taking a daily supplement
The latest finding comes from nutrition and immunology(免疫学) respected; Vitamin E boosts the immune system in older people. In an eight-month study of 88 seniors, the scientists found that those taking at least 200 international units of Vitamin E daily had stronger immune responses than those taking little or none. The Turfs research follows a national study that found Vitamin E delays the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers tracked 341 moderately senile patients. Those who popped 2000 IU of Vitamin E took even seven months longer to reach an advanced stage of the disease.
Rangit Kumar Chandra, a Vitamin E researcher at Memorial University of Newfoundland , Canada, says more studies are needed to learn who can benefit most and at what dose. Vitamin E this the blood, so high doses can cause bleeding in people who also take blood thinning drugs, even aspirin. Individuals with serious conditions should consult their doctors. But most people over 65, Chandra says, can take up to 200 IU with no side effects and great benefits.

The largest shark known to us, Megalodon, is extinct(绝种的). Or is it? Carcharodon Megalodon, commonly known as Megalodon is believed to have lived between 1 million and 5 million years ago and thought to have been 52 feet long. It is (or was) a shark that had a jaw 7 or more feet wide. Fairly recently , there has been some speculation about whether it is extinct or just out of reach. Some people believe that Megalodon has found a home deep in the ocean. There are many known “Living Fossils(化石)”:Coelacanth, Sea Cucumbers, Sea Urchins, Lobsters, Sea Stars. The common ones like lobsters and sea Cucumbers of years or more, and are easily accessible to us. What if they weren’t accessible and yet still excited? We would label them extinct. The discovery of a live Coelacanth, a fish long believed extinct, challenged some scientists’ long-held beliefs on extinction. There have been recent discoveries of incredibly large squid, and deep-sea fish never before seen by scientists.
In the 1960’s the US Navy set up underwater microphones around the world to track Soviet submarines. The net work, known as the Sound Surveillance System, still lie deep below the ocean’s surface in a larger of water known as the “deep sound channel”. The temperature and pressure of the channel allow sound waves to travel undisturbed. NOAA’s Acoustic Monitoring Project has been using the Sound Surveillance System to listen for changes in ocean structure like ocean currents or volcanic activity. Most of the sounds recorded are common and of no concern. One sound , identified in 1977 by US Navy “spy” sensors, was odd. It was obviously a marine animal but the call was more powerful than any of the calls made by any other reported sea creature. It was too big for a whale. Could it be a deep-sea monster? One possibility was a giant squid, but no one is sure. It was named “Bloop”. Could it be Megalodon?
If Megalodan is still alive down in the bottom on the ocean, we may some day soon discover it. Then what? Deep sea diving will never be the same, that’s for sure?

Although April did not bring the rains we all hoped for, and although the Central Valley doesn’t generally experience the atmospheric sound and lightning that can accompany(伴随) those rains, it is still important for parents to be able to answer the youthful questions about thunder and lightning.
The reason these two wonders of nature are so difficult for many adults to explain to children is that they are not very well understood by adults themselves. For example, do you know that the lightning we see flashing down to the earth from a cloud is actually flashing up to a cloud from the earth? Our eyes trick us into thinking we see a downward motion when it’s actually the other way round. But then, if we believe only what we think we see, we’d still insist that the sun rises in the morning and sets at night.
Most lightning flashes take place inside a cloud, and only a relative few can be seen jumping between two clouds or between the earth and a cloud. But, with about 2,000 thunderstorms taking place above the earth every minute of the day and night, there’s enough activity to produce about 100 lightning strikes on the earth every second.
Parents can use thunder and lightning to help their children learn more about the world around them. When children understand that the light of the lightning flashes reaches their eyes almost at the same moment, but the sound of the thunder takes about 5 seconds to travel just one mile, they can begin to time the interval(间隔) between the flash and the crash(撞击声) to learn how close they are to the actual spark.

A.seeing is believing
B.people may easily make mistakes in their understanding of the nature.
C.We should never trust what we see or hear
D.Children sometimes know more about nature than their parents

Made in Germany, she shocked East Asia with her beauty and carried the Chinese navy into modern times 110 years ago. Then in 1895 she blew herself up while in port instead of surrendering(投降) to the Japanese. But on April 16, Dingyuan , the flagship to the Beiyang Fleet, navy of the Qing Dynasty, returned.
A copy of the famous battleship has been built. It is part of commemoration(纪念活动) to remember China’s first modern navy and heroes, like captain Ding Ruchang and Deng Shichang, who fought against the Japanese.
Before the reproduction arrived at Weihai Port, Shangdong Province. She visited the historic sites of naval battles that took place 110 years ago. Some 110 navy soldiers on the dock welcomed her back with a salute(致敬) and local people threw flowers and rice into the sea.
The new ship cannot fight. It will only serve as a floating museum and be opened to the public on May 1.
The Dingyuan was made in 1880 at the cost of 400,000 pounds(6.35million yuan). She was 94.5metres long and 18 meters wide. She was said to be the largest and most powerful battleship in East Asia at that time. So she became the main target in sea battles.
Under heavy attack from the Japanese navy, the captain and soldiers aboard Dingyuan used up all their ammunition(弹药) to damage the enemy.
After China’s defeat, the Treaty of Shimonoseki(<马关条约>) handed over Taiwan and money to Japan. It also resulted in increased calls within China for more modernization and reform.

While traveling, I always take the following things with me, which are my ID card, a camera, a compass, a CD player and some clothes. I think the ID card is a basic and necessary document, and it is often used by tourists. The camera is used to take pictures or record what we have done during the trip, and it can bring us a lot of fun. The compass is very essential for us to travel in the forests. Without it, we may get lost. And then the CD player, I think, is also very important for me to kill the time when on the train or the plane. What’s more, I have to bring one or two coats when traveling to a different place. In a word, among all above, I think the ID card is the most important.
