A
Gestures are the silent language of every culture. We point a finger or move another part of the body to show what we want to say. It is important to know the body language of every country or we may be misunderstood.
In the US, people greet each other with a handshake in a formal discussion. The handshake must be firm. If the handshake is weak, it is a sign of weakness or unfriendliness. Friends may place a hand on the other’s arm or shoulder. Some people, usually women, greet each other with a hug(拥抱).
Space is important to Americans. When two people talk to each other, they usually stand about 2.5 feet away and at an angle, so they are not facing each other directly. Americans get uncomfortable when a person stands too close. They will move back to have their space. If Americans touch another person by accident, they say, “Pardon me.” or “Excuse me”.
Americans like to look at the other in the eyes when they are talking. If you don’t do so, it means you are bored, hiding something, or are not interested. When you stare at someone, however, it is not polite.
For Americans, thumbs-up means “yes”, “very good” or “well done”. Thumbs-down means the opposite. To call a waiter, one might put up one hand to head level or above. To show you want the check, make a movement with your hands as you are signing a piece of paper. It is all right to point at things but not at people with the hand and index finger(食指). Americans shake their index fingers at children when they scold them and pat them on the head when they admire them.
Learning a culture’s body language is sometimes confusing(困惑的). If you don’t know what to do, the safest thing to do is to smile.
56. When you shake hands with an American, you should__________.
A. shake his/her hand firmly B. put your hands on his/her shoulder
C. shake his/her hand gently D. give him/her a hug afterwards
57. In the US, people usually______ if you stand too close to them.
A. feel friendly B. get uncomfortable C. keep still D. hit you angrily
58. If you talk with an American friend, it’s polite to________.
A. stare at him/her B. look at the ground
C. look at his/her in the eyes D. look here and there
59. When an American gives you the thumbs-up, he, in fact_______
A. means that you are number one B. wants to please you
C. needs to call a waiter D. express his satisfaction with you
60. What’s the main idea of this passage
A. People greet each other by shaking hands in America.
B. Every country has their own gestures.
C. Learning a culture’s body language is very important and necessary.
D. It is all right to point at things but not at people with the hand and index finger.
B
As is known to all, the organization and management of wages and salaries are very complex.
Generally speaking, the Accounts Department is responsible for calculations of pay, while the Personnel Department(人事部) is interested in discussions with the employees about pay.
If a firm wants to adopt a new wage and salary structure, it is essential that the firm should decide on a method of job evaluation(估价) and ways of measuring the performance of its employees. In order to be successful, that new pay structure will need agreement between Trade Unions and employers.
In job evaluation, all the requirements of each job are defined in a detailed job description. Each of those requirements is given a value, usually in “points”, which are added together to give a total value for the job. For middle and higher management, a special method is used to evaluate managers on their knowledge of the job, their responsibility, and their ability to solve problems.
Because of the difficulty in measuring management work, however, job grades for managers are often decided without reference to an evaluation system based on points.
In attempting to design a pay system, the Personnel Department should compare the value of each job with those in the job market. It should also consider economic factors such as the cost of living and the labor supply.
It is necessary that payment for a job should vary with any differences in the way that the job is performed. Where it is simply to measure the work done, as in the work done with the hands, monetary encouragement schemes are often chosen; for indirect workers, where measurement is difficult, methods of additional payments are employed.
61. If a firm wants to establish a new pay structure, it is necessary to get the agreement between________.
A. the Trade Unions and the Personnel Department
B. the Personnel Department and the Accounts Department
C. the employees and the Trade Unions.
D. the employers and the Trade Unions
62. What does the words “monetary encouragement schemes” in the last paragraph imply
A. They are plans in which much payment is encouraged.
B. They are encouraging money schedules
C. They are pay systems
D. They are pay systems to encourage workers in that the more work is done, the more money will be paid.
63. Methods of additional payments are adopted for indirect workers because________.
A. their work is not important B. they have low wages
C. the measurement of their work is difficult D. the company does not have enough money
64. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the text
A. In every company only the Accounts Department takes charge of the management of wages and salaries.
B. Management work and the job done by workers can use the same evaluation system.
C. If a job is done differently, the payment for the job should be different too.
D. An evaluation system based on points is usually used to evaluate management work.
65. The main purpose of the passage is to________.
A. explain the responsibilities of both the Accounts Department and the Personnel Department.
B. explain not to evaluate the performance of a job by points
C. tell readers how a company should adopt a new payment system
D. convince (使确信) readers that management work is more difficult to evaluate than the work done by workers

Turning on the TV, a wonderful scene comes to your eyes—a group of men, tall, strong and handsome, and women, young, beautiful and attractive, too. Together they eat in the finest restaurants, traveling everywhere around the world by luxurious planes and pleasure ships. They are models.
Do you envy them What sort of life are models leading Is it a wonderful life for a young lady or a young man
A few models are well-known actors or actresses who can make a lot of money only by showing themselves off in commercials. But the majority of them are just curious to see what it is like. They’d like to be models just because they are attracted by what they imagine—models earn a lot of money and lead a glorious life. This is true for those who are very successful. However, most models find it difficult to get work. Very few can earn enough to live on, and for all models their expenses are high. Their agents claim about 20% of the earnings, and no model will get very far without a clever agent. Besides, they have to buy good clothing. They also have to pay to travel to interviews and reach the places where the work is to be done.
Interviews for a model job are known as cattle-markets in the modeling world, and not without a good reason. A top model can choose his or her work, demand and receive high fees and has his or her expenses paid. But for most models, the situation is quite different. And agent or employer inspects each model much as a farmer inspects cattle at a market. Intelligence, qualifications and personal characteristics count for little against good looks and tight figures. For all except the very few lucky ones, the life of a model is a continual search for work, trying to sell himself or herself in the face of fierce competition and, sometimes, not particularly moral standards on the part of some employers.
Immigration officials at airport look suspiciously at a girl whose passport shows her occupation as “Model”, and these are men and women of considerable experience of the world. It comes no surprise to find that some models prefer to put “Secretary” or “Businessman” as their jobs in their passports.
Modeling is a changeable world with great rewards for a tiny minority but not for the majority.
66. For models, their good looks and tight figures are ____, compared with their intelligence and qualifications.
A. more important B. less needed
C. less essential D. more looked down upon
67. Which of the following can lead you to believe according to the passage
A. A model’s traveling expenses are usually paid by his employer.
B. To be a model, good looks are the most important qualification.
C. Most models have a fairly easy way of life with high pay.
D. A model can hardly be successful without a good agent.
68. Models often put “Secretary” or “Businessman” instead of “Model” in their passports because ____.
A. they want to avoid being stopped to sign their names by fans
B. a person with the occupation of a model is easily attacked by black societies
C. models are sometimes looked down upon
D. secretaries and businessmen are free of custom duty
69. What may be the author’s attitude towards modeling
A. It is a worthwhile life for a young lady or a young man.
B. He is in favour of young people to try modeling.
C. Before being crazy about a model job, young people should be aware of the difficulties.
D. It is a field in which everyone has a great chance to succeed.
70. The underlined word “suspiciously” can most probably be replaced by ____.
A. doubtfully B. excitedly C. proudly D. sadly
D
“A good book for children should simply be a good book in its own right,” says Mollie Hunter. Born and brought up near Edinburgh, Mollie has devoted her talents to writing primarily for young people. She firmly believes that there is always and should always be a wider audience for any good book whatever its main market is. In Mollie's opinion it is necessary to make full use of language and she enjoys telling a story, which is what every writer should be doing. “If you aren't telling a story, you're a very dead writer indeed,” she says. With the chief function of a writer being to entertain (让人愉快), Mollie is indeed an entertainer. “I have this great love of not only the meaning of language but of the music of language,” she says. “This love goes back to early childhood. I've told stories all my life. I had a school teacher who used to ask us what we would like to be when we grew up and, because my family always had dogs, and I was very good at handling them, I said I wanted to work with dogs, and the teacher always said ‘Nonsense, Mollie, dear, you’ll be a writer.’ So finally I thought that this woman must have something, since she was a good teacher and I decided when I was nine that I would be a writer.”
This childhood intention is described in her novel, A Sound of Chariots, which although written in the third person is clearly autobiographical (自传体的) and gives a picture both of Mollie's ambition (理想) and her struggle towards its achievement. Thoughts of her childhood inevitably(不可避免地)brought thoughts of the time when her home was still a village with buttercup meadows and strawberry fields—sadly now covered with modern houses. “I was once taken back to see it and I felt that somebody had lain dirty hands all over my childhood. I'll never go back,” she said. “Never.” “When I set one of my books in Scotland,” she said, “I can recall my romantic (浪漫的) feelings as a child playing in those fields, or watching the village blacksmith at work. And that's important, because children now know so much so early that romance can't exist for them, as it did for us.”
71. What does Mollie Hunter feel about the nature of a good book
A. It should not aim at a narrow audience. B. It should be attractive to young readers.
C. It should be based on original ideas. D. It should not include too much conversation.
72. In Mollie Hunter's opinion, which of the following is one sign of a poor writer
A. Being poor in life experience. B. Being short of writing skills.
C. The weakness of description. D. The absence of a story.
73. What do we learn about Mollie Hunter as a young child
A. She didn't expect to become a writer. B. She didn't enjoy writing stories.
C. She didn't have any particular ambitions. D. She didn't respect her teacher's views.
74. In comparison with children of earlier years, Mollie feels that modern children are .
A. more intelligent B. better informed
C. less eager to learn D. less interested in reality
75. What's the writer's purpose in this text
A. To describe Mollie Hunter's most successful books.
B. To share her enjoyment of Mollie Hunter's books.
C. To introduce Mollie Hunter's work to a wider audience.
D. To provide information for Mollie Hunter's existing readers.

An Iowa high school counselor gets a call from a parent protesting the “C” her child received on an assignment. “The parent argued every point in the essay, ”recalls the counselor, who soon realized why the mother was so disappointed about me grade. “It became apparent that she’d written it. ”
77. ___________________________
In a survey, 90% of new teachers agreed that involving parents in their children’s education is a priority at their school, but only 25%described their experience working with parents as “very satisfying.” When asked to choose me biggest challenge they face, 31% of them quoted involving parents and communicating with them as their top choice. 73% of new teachers said too many parents treat schools and teachers as enemies.
78. ___________________________
At a time when competition is rising and resources are limited, when battles over testing force schools to adjust their priorities, when cell phones and e-mail speed up the information flow and all kinds of private ghosts and public quarrels slip into the parent-teacher conference, it’s harder for both sides to step back and breathe deeply and look at the goals they share.
79. ___________________________
Everyone says the parent-teacher conference should be pleasant, civilized, a kind of dialogue where parents and teachers build partnership. But what most teachers feel, and certainly what all parents feel, is anxiety and panic.
80. ___________________________
When a teacher asks parents to be partners, he or she doesn't necessarily mean Mom or Dad should be camping in the classroom. Research shows that though students benefit modestly from having parents involved at school, what happens at home matters much more. According to research based on the National Education Longitudinal Study, a sample of nearly 25,000 eighth graders, among four main areas of parental involvement (home discussion, home supervision. school communication, and school participation), home discussion was the most strongly related

Internet shopping is a new way of shopping. You no longer need to walk round hundreds of shops looking for the items you need. Nowadays, you can shop for just almost anything from your armchair. All you need is a computer which is linked to the Internet. Shopping on the Internet is becoming increasingly popular. In the United States, 50 percent of families have computers at home and almost one third is linked to the Internet. Americans spent over US$2.5 billion on Internet shopping in 1998. This figure is expected to increase.
People can shop for a variety of products on the Internet, such as books, CDs, clothes and food. These types of products are the most common purchases (购入品) through the Internet. Services such as booking airline tickets, reserving hotels or renting cars are also available on the Internet. You can also go shopping on the Internet for entertainment services and take part in on-line games or e-mail “chats”.

One possible version:
Is it a good way to shop on the Internet
Internet shopping has changed the life style of people. A great amount of money is spent on Internet shopping in the United States. As we know, more and more people like shopping on the Internet nowadays because of its convenience. People can buy anything such as physical products, information products and even some services just by clicking the mouse at home.
Different students have different opinions on this point. Some think Internet shopping offers a number of benefits for the shopper. One of the most important advantages is convenience. While others think it is unsafe to buy goods using credit cards on the Internet and that it is impossible to check the quality of goods.
Though shopping on the Internet has some disadvantages, I don’t support it. If you go shopping on the Internet, you will miss many opportunities to talk to your friends. Besides, Internet shoppers are likely to lose privacy with every mouse click.
