Playing soccer instead of watching it may improve males’ health because it helps avoid risky behavior, a recent research study shows.
British researchers did interviews with thirty-one 18-to-21- year-old men in London. They studied the masculine (男人的)behavior of London young men (such as drinking) to see how it all affected their health.
“The most interesting thing in the study is the idea of using one type of typically masculine behaviour to compensate for another,” said lead researcher Richard de Visser. “For example, men who are not confident in their sporting abilities may try and make up for this by drinking excessively.”
Young males’ health is now a serious concern. More and more young males are likely to drink too much, use illegal drugs and be injured in traffic accidents. Thus, understanding the desire to appear masculine helps reduce such unhealthy behavior, according to de Visser.

In many countries the standard of living enjoyed by their people has increased rapidly in recent years. Sadly, not everyone in these countries is so fortunate and many people in rich countries are homeless.
The reasons for homelessness are various, but poverty is undoubtedly one of the main causes. The homeless people may have become jobless and then been unable to pay their rent and so no longer have a roof over their heads. Often, the fact that unemployed people get help from the government prevents this from happening, but not always.
Some homeless people are mentally ill and have no one to look after them. Some are young people who, for one reason or another, have left home and have nowhere to live. Many of them have had a serious disagreement with their parents and have left home, choosing to go to a city and live on the streets. Sometimes they have taken such action because they have been unable to get on with a step-parent.
Many homeless people get into the habit of begging to get enough money to stay alive, but many of the general public refuse to give anything to beggars. Often they are moved on by the police , being accused, whether rightly or wrongly, of forceful begging. There are many who disrespect homeless people.
Some cynics(愤世嫉俗的人)declare that homeless people choose to live the life which they lead. But who would willingly choose to live in a shop doorway, under a bridge or in a cardboard box
According to the text, what causes some people to be homeless
A. The increased standard of living B. No government help
C. Agreement with their parents D. Lack of money
54. It can be inferred from the text that_______.
A. you will not find homeless people in countries with a high standard of living
B. the mentally ill live on the streets because they want the company of other homeless people
C. the unemployed people who receive help may still be among the homeless people
D. the homeless are willing to live under a bridge or in a cardboard box
55. In paragraph 2, “a roof over their heads” most probably means _______.
A. a home B. a cap C. a car D. a covering
56. The author thinks that the homeless people are ______.
A. admirable B. respectable C. troublesome D. pitiful

A British freshman, who launched a business selling tiny advertising space on a website, is going to be a millionaire from the project.
Alex Tew, 21, sold the first spot on his Million Dollar Homepage at the end of last August. A few months on, the project has taken the Internet by storm, attracted the attention of big businesses, and made Alex richer than he hoped for in his wildest dreams.
Alex studies business management at Nottingham University. Although he worked part-time in a fast-food restaurant, he found it difficult to make ends meet. Soon an idea came to him.
Like all great concepts the idea is simple in itself. The homepage is divided into 10,000 boxes, each made up of 100 panies or individuals are invited to buy one or more boxes for $100 each — $1 a pixel — and put on a logo. When a websurfer clicks on the logo he is transported to the company or person’s website.
In the first few days he sold a few hundred pixels here and there, mainly to friends and relatives, but within weeks the site was a huge talking-point on the Internet. A range of businesses from a big international phone company and media companies to small businesses offering computer games have signed up!
Companies, many of which only signed up for a bit of fun, have been amazed at how many people have been directed to their businesses from the site. Hundreds of imitation sites have now sprung up.
Alex planned to try to sell all one million pixels, earning himself a cool £568,000 ($1million). On average 7,500 pixels a day are sold — so Alex could have been a millionaire in this January. Does he have any plans to spend his cash
“I’m not going to do anything silly,” Alex said. “I know how quickly the money could disappear. It’s hard to believe what happened. The site’s success is a real testament to the massive power of the Internet.”
57 .How will Alex earn his money that can make him a millionaire
A. By working in a fast-food restaurant.
B. By selling tiny advertising space on a website.
C. By clicking on the logo.
D. By selling pixels to his friends and relatives.
58. When did a good idea come to Alex ___________________.
A. After he graduated from the university.
B. At the end of last August.
C. When he found he did not earn enough money to spend.
D. When his site was a huge talking-point on the Internet.
59. Which sentence is Not True according to the passage
A. Alex’s homepage is made up of 1,000,000 pixels.
B. Alex thinks money is used up very quickly if you have no plan.
C. Many Companies have been astonished at so many people have been directed to their businesses from the site.
D. If Alex sells all one million pixels, he will earn himself£1million

A. a simple idea also leads to a big success

第三节 书面表达
One possible version:
Recently we have had a heated discussion on whether people should keep pets at home in cities. Some students think it’s a good idea to keep pets because old people who live alone at home can get some comfort from pets.. Besides, getting along well with animals will make our life interesting. On the contrary, the other students are against the idea. In their opinion, if too many people keep pets at home, it is bad for the environment. What is worse, pets may make too much noise and even attack people.
I like animals, so I don’t think it is bad to keep pets at home. But we must take some measures to prevent them from polluting our environment.
