The week I turned 50, my marriage came to a sudden end. My house, furniture and everything I’d owned was sold to pay debts that I didn’t even know I had. In a week I had lost my husband, my home and my parents who had refused to accept a divorce in the family. I’d lost everything except my four teenage children. I used every penny I had to buy five plane tickets from Missouri to Hawaii. Everyone said I was crazy to think I could just run off to an island and survive. I was afraid they were right.
Knowing that no one in the world was going to help us, I rented a cheap apartment. I worked 18 hours a day and lost 30 pounds because I lived on one meal a day. One night as I walked alone on the beach, I saw the red orange glow of the lava(火山岩) pouring out of Kilauea Volcano in the distance. It was time to live my imagination!
The next day, I quit my job and invested my last paycheck in art supplies and began doing what I loved. I hadn’t painted a picture in 15 years. I wondered if I could still paint. My hands trembled the first time I picked up a brush. But before an hour had passed, I was lost in the colors spreading across the canvas(画布) in front of me. And as soon as I started believing in myself, other people started believing in me, too. The first painting sold for $ 1500 before I even had time to frame it.
The past six years have been filled with adventures. My children and I have gone swimming with dolphins, watched whales and hiked around the crater (火山口) rim (边缘) of the volcano. We wake up every morning with the ocean in front of us and the volcano behind us. The dream I had more than 40 years ago is now reality. I’m living freely and happily ever after.

Sometimes people call each other “scared-cat”, but have you ever thought about this expression When a cat is frightened, its heart starts beating faster, its muscles get tense, and there are changes in the chemicals in its blood-stream.
Although the cat doesn’t realize this, its body is getting ready for action.
If the danger continues, this animal will do one of the two things. It will defend itself, or it will run away as fast as it can.
Something like this also happens to people. When we are excited, angry, scared, or aroused by other emotions, our bodies go through many physical changes. Our hearts beat faster, and our muscles get tense. All of these changes make us more alert and ready to react. We, too, get ready to defend ourselves or run.
Human beings, however, have a problem that animals never face. If we give way to our feelings and let them take over, we can get into trouble. Have you ever said something in anger ----or hit somebody ----and regretted it later Have you ever shouted at a teacher, told somebody you were lonely, or said you were in love, and then wished later you had kept your mouth shut It isn’t always wise to express your feelings freely.
Does this mean that it’s smarter always to hide our feelings No! If you keep feelings of anger, sadness, and bitterness hidden away or bottled up inside, your body stays tense. Physical illnesses can develop, and you can feel churned up inside. It can actually be bad for your health.
Feelings that you keep all bottled up inside, don’t just go away. It’s as if you bought some bananas and stuck them in a cupboard. You might not be able to see them, but before long you’d smell them. And if you opened the cupboard, chances are you’d see little fruit flies hovering(盘旋) all over them. They’d be rotten.
You can try to treat emotions as if they were bananas in the cupboard. You can hide them and you can pretend they don’t exist, but they’ll still be around. And at last you’ll have to deal with them, just like those bananas.
61 .It is mentioned in the passage that human beings get into trouble because _________.
A. they are not as alert as animals
B. they sometimes can’t control their feelings
C. they always do something wrong to other people
D. they don’t pay attention to their physical changes

A. very delighted B. beaten heavily
C. very frightened D. disturbed badly
63. The author wants to tell us in the last two paragraphs that_______
A.you’ll not completely get away from your feelings
B.you should treat emotions as bananas in a cupboard

D.it is good for your health to keep pleasant feelings inside
64. The author writes this article in order to _________
A.tell us that it isn’t good to keep feelings inside
B.give us some advice on how to express our feelings
C.make us deal with feelings in a wise way
D.make us know that it isn’t always wise to express our feelings freely

With only about 1, 000 pandas left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone(克隆) the animal and save the endangered species(物种). That’s a move similar to what a Texas A & M University researchers have been undertaking for the past five years in a project called “Noah’s Ark”.
Noah’s Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos(胚胎), semen and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen. If certain species should become extinct, Dr. Duane Kraemer, a professor in Texas A & M’s College of Veterinary Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future.
It is estimated that as many as 2, 000 species of mammals, birds reptiles will become extinct in over 100 years. The panda, native only to China, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years.
This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal.
The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete.
“The nuclear transfer(核子移植) of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available(capable of being used) panda eggs could be a major problem,” Kraemer believes. “They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy (having a baby). It takes a long time and it’s difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk, so it is worth the effort,” adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A& M, the first-ever attempt at cloning a dog.
“They are trying to do something that’s never been done, and this is very similar to our work in Noah’s Ark. We’re both trying to save animals that face extinction. I certainly appreciate their effort and there’s a lot we can learn from what they are attempting to do. It’s a research that is very much needed.”
65. The aim of “Noah’s Ark” project is to _______.
A. make efforts to clone the endangered pandas
B. save endangered animals from dying out
C. collect DNA of endangered animals to study
D. transfer the nuclear of one animal to another
66. According to Professor Kraemer, the major problem in cloning pandas would be the lack of _______.
A. available panda eggs B. host animals
C. qualified researchers D. enough money
67. The best title for the passage may be _______.
A. China’s Success in Pandas Cloning
B. The First Cloned Panda in the World

A. Kraemer and his team have succeeded in cloning a dog
B. scientists try to implant a panda’s egg into a rabbit
C. Kraemer will work with Chinese scientists in clone researches
D. about two thousand of species will probably die out in a century

TOKYO — Our kids, the Japanese government announced, have forgotten how to behave. They can’t be bothered with housework. If they see someone being wronged, they probably look the other way.
Few countries have placed more importance on being well-behaved in public than Japan. The simplest requests for directions often result in guided tours. Smiling shopkeepers are still the rule. Lost wallets usually make their way to their owners.
But according to recent surveys, all that may be going the way of the ancient hair-do(发式). And Japan’s government has gone into something of a crisis mode.
A Japanese Education Ministry Survey formed late in 1999 and made public last month found that Japan moves behind other nations in teaching youngsters right from wrong.
It also reported that Japanese children are less helpful and do far less housework than their foreign peers in all classes. But they are better about taking dirty dishes to the kitchens after dinner.
In addition, Japanese kids are more likely to dry their hair and carry cell phones than American and Chinese kids, according to another survey, by a Tokyo-based tank..
Children in about 8 per cent of public school classrooms are so disorderly that teachers cannot hold lessons, further recent reports show. children refuse to sit, to listen or to stop talking.
Older and middle-aged Japanese continue to have a solid sense of good manners and social justice, says Professor Yoshina Hirano from Shinshu University, who was appointed to direct the ministry’s survey.
Despite the knowledge of good manners among adults, the breakdown in manners may be spreading, he said.

Out on the road the jeep already waiting. As I got on beside him, he sat up and started the engine. In a few minutes we were out of the town and heading with great speed in the direction of Bacalar. My hat blew away but when I asked him to stop, he refused. We were being followed by spies and it was necessary to drive fast to throw them off.
The hard and unsmooth surface of the road made the jeep weave. To the danger of being shot off the bank was added the discomfort, the cold, for at the speed we were travelling the air cut through my cotton shirt and trousers. I asked the driver to go slower, adding as an excuse that I wanted to look out for wild animals. He replied that the faster we drove the better our chance of coming up with them before they could run away. He had hardly spoken when the jeep struck a rain-filled pit, which splashed a sheet of muddy water over the windscreen. Blinded, he stopped the jeep with one wheel over the bank. When we got going again it was at a speed little faster than a walking pace.

作文
Most of us agree that music should be played. As we know, music can produce a lively and happy atmosphere. Besides, music provides us with relaxation after hard study, which reduces the tiredness. Listening to music also makes us feel happy.
On the other hand, some students have the opposite view. They don't think they can get the expected results by listening to music, as the break between classes is short. What's needed during the break is peace instead of the noise produced by the music. Besides, in class some students are still lost in the music they have just heard.
