第三部分:阅读理解(共25小题;每小题2分,满分50分)
  阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A,B,C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
(A)
If I were writing a history of my family, some of the darkest moments recorded would be those surrounding Christmas trees. One would certainly think otherwise; selecting and putting up our trees have always been fraught(充满) with risk. For example, one afternoon close to Christmas Eve my mother bought what she perceived to be a bargain: a glorious tree that was so full and tall that we could hardly get it into the house.Once we did, my father immediately realized that we would have to hire a carpenter to build a stand for it.Another December, perhaps the very next one, we bought a tree earlier than we ever had before. We were happy with its shape and delighted that its size was manageable. We easily placed it in a stand, decorated it from top to bottom, and then smugly(沾沾自喜) sat back to back in its soft light. Two or three days passed and the truth could not be hidden: we had bought a tree cut so long ago that it was now shedding(脱落) its needles without provocation. There was nothing to do but to undecorated it, take it down, and begin tree-shopping again. Our most recent Christmas tree offered still another challenge. When we bought it home, once again it seemed larger than it had in the great outdoors. To complicate matters, we had bought a new stand, one whose nuts and bolts worked more mysteriously than those of our old stand. Our only recourse(救助) was to persuade two young neighbours to stop dunking basketball and to help us get the tree into the house and set it securely in the stand.Unfortunately, no one noticed the mud on our helpers’ sneakers, so only after removing several reddish brown spots from the carpet were we able to discuss the question of where the lights and ornaments were stored.Perhaps those who cut their own trees have tales to tell more harrowing(难过) than these.I don’t care to hear them, for my family’s experiences, of which these are but three, are enough to tempt me to make the following suggestion: “Let’s forget the tree next Christmas; Let’s simply drape a garland(花环) over the mirror in the hall and hang a wreath on the front door.”

The king of the oil field is the driller. He is a very skilled man sometimes. He sends his drill more than a mile into the earth. During the process of drilling, gas and oil at great pressure may suddenly be met, and if the drill rushes out and catches fire, that oil well may never be brought into operation at all. This danger is well known and steps are always taken to prevent it.
There is a lot of luck in drilling for oil.The drill may just miss the oil although it is near.On the other hand, it may strike oil at a fairly high level. When the drill goes down, it brings up soil. The soil is examined for traces of oil.If they are disappointed at one place, the drillers go to another.A lot of money has been spent, for example, in the deserts of Egypt, in “searching” for oil; sometimes little is found. When we buy some petrol for our cars, we pay for not only the cost of the petrol, but also part of the cost of the search that is always going on.

Indonesia’s coral reefs are in trouble. Coral mining, industrial pollution and poisonous agricultural runoff all play a role in their destruction, but the fishermen have been the worst offenders. They not only bomb fish but also poison them with cyanide (氰化物), an equally destructive practice. The fishermen are also among the biggest potential victims (受害者). Two thirds of Indonesia’s 7,000 coastal villages are close to coral reefs and thus depend for their livelihood on the harvest of reef fish .The disappearing reefs are already leading to a dramatic decline in the productivity of coastal fisheries and to increasing fights among fishermen .
Indonesia’s reefs are vast-they cover51,000 square kilometers , surround 17,500 islands and stretch 3,500 kilometers –but they are not infinite. Many foreign experts and Indonesians fear that the region’s entire marine environment could be seriously damaged if the reefs keep dying at their present rate .“The overall picture is depressing ,” says Ian Dutton , Indonesian director of an environmental group .
Depressing, but not hopeless. Despite the destruction, environmentalists have in recent years made significant progress in changing the hearts and minds of the fishermen.Working closely with local Indonesian authorities in North Sulawesi and less populated eastern Indonesia, where most of the country’s reefs are located, they have succeeded in preventing destructive fishing practices and coral mining from overwhelming the reefs.
Increasing numbers of fishermen are waking up to the threat and protecting the life-sustaining coral before it’s too late. Nuhung, a 56-year-old fisherman, says, “I always knew blast fishing was harmful. Then I suddenly realized that by bombing the reefs I was destroying not only my own but my children’s future.”

You’ve probably had the experience of having someone fall in love with you when you didn’t return the feeling. In such a case it’s hard to know what to do. You want to discourage your admirer. Yet you don’t want to be so obvious in your efforts that you make an enemy of him.
A friend of mine had this problem and handled it in the most tactful way I’ve ever seen. Instead of telling the young man that she found it tiresome to have him around so much, she devoted herself to introducing him to every girl she knew.Whenever she had a date with him, she arranged for them to drop in at the home of one of her girl friends. After a few weeks it took for him to click with one of these girls, and then everyone was happy. The new girl and the young man got along just fine and both of them were grateful to my friend for having brought them together.
Of course you may have your own way of dealing with the problem. But whatever you decide to do, keep one thing in mind----the boy in question has feelings every bit as sensitive as your own.So try to find a way of discouraging him without hurting him.
58.The best title for this passage would be _____.

B.keeping on dating with her admirer
C .avoiding meeting the young man any more
D.bringing the young man together with another girl and still having him as a friend
