The scene in the Holloywood movie The Day After Tomorrow, where global warming could soon turn the global climate into a new ice age, may never occur, according to new research.
The next ice age could be 15,000 years away, say European scientists who last month announced a continuous record of 740,000 years of climate data obtained from the Antarctic ice.
Scientists from 10 nations have now almost completely drilled through a 3,000-meter depth of ice high in the Antarctic mainland. They figure out that the area where summer temperatures can fall to –40C, has at least 900,000 years of snowfalls, kept as neatly as the growth rings of a tree. And the ice and air caught in each layer have begun to answer questions about the climates in the past.
The results show that there have been eight ice ages in the past 740,000 years and eight warmer periods. And by comparing the pattern of global conditions today with those of the past, the researchers reported in Nature that the present warm period could last another 15,000 years.
Research suggests that there is a very close connection between greenhouse gas levels and global average temperatures. It also shows that carbon dioxide levels are the highest for at least 440,000 years.
“If people say to you: the greenhouse effect is a good thing because we would go into an ice age otherwise, our data say no, a new ice age is not hanging over our heads,” said Eric Wolff from the British Antarctic Survey. “ Now we have eight examples of how the climate goes in and out of ice ages…and you can learn what the rules are that go into climate models that tell us about the future.”
Scientists found that whenever temperatures rose in the frozen record, so did carbon dioxide level. “ In 440,000 years we have never seen greenhouse gas get as thick as it is today,” said Dr Wolff.
65. In drilling through the ice in Antarctica, scientists have found that _______.
A. the lowest temperature there is –40 C
B. the depth of ice is 3,000 meters
C. the ice has existed for 15,000 years.
D. Snowfalls are kept in certain patterns.
66. The information of the global climate conditions in the past can be obtained through ____.
A. separating carbon dioxide from the air.
B. examining the growth rings of trees
C. comparing temperatures in different areas
D. studying the ice and air caught in the each layer
67. We can infer from Eric Wolff’s words that _____.
A. there is something wrong with the data
B. greenhouse effect is always a bad thing
C. a new ice age will not come in the near future
D. greenhouse gas will get thick in the future
68. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Research over the Antarctic area
B. Warm period to last about 15,000 years
C. Report on the eight ice ages in the past
D. Hollywood movies and the global climate

If you have a checking account, you receive a statement every month from your bank. The statement shows the two main types of activities that occurred during the month:
deposits, or how much money you put into your account.
withdrawals, or the money that has been paid out of the account.
The statement also shows the balance, or the amount of money remaining in your account, and charges, such as the service charged by the bank for processing checks. Canceled checks, or the checks that have been cashed, are returned with your statement.
Every time you write a check, you should record the following information in the checkbook register: the check number; the date; the person, business, or organization to whom the check is issued; and the amount of the check. You should also record the amount and date of any deposits made into your checking account. Accurate record keeping is essential for keeping track of your checking account. If your records are done correctly, the balance in your checkbook register should match the balance on the checking account statement exactly. This is called balancing a checking account. Study the checking account statement below and compare it to the checkbook register.
69. What was the amount of check 305 to Gifts & Gags?
A. $10.00 B. $46.05 C. $25.00 D. $110.10
70. What was the balance in the account after check 304 was paid?
A. $ 85.20 B. $110.10 C. $110.20 D. $222.40
71. Why was $25.00 added to the balance of $ 85.20 in the BALANCE column?
A. A $25.00 check was paid B. The bank made an error or $25.00
C. A $25.00 service charge was added D. A $25.00 deposit was made.

Green space facilities are contributing to an important extent to the quality of the urban environment. Fortunately it is no longer necessary that every lecture or every book about this subject has to start with the proof of this idea. At present it is generally accepted, although more as a self-evident statement than on basis of scientific proof. The recognition of the importance of green spaces in the urban environment is a first step on the right way. This does not mean, however, that sufficient details are known about the functions of green space in towns and about the way in which the inhabitants are using these spaces. As to this rather complex subject I shall, within the scope of this lecture, enter into one aspect only, namely the recreational fun_ction of green space facilities.
The theoretical separation of living, working, traffic and recreation, which for many years has been used in town-and-country planning, has in my opinion resulted in disproportionate (不均衡的) attention to forms of recreation far from home, whereas there was relatively little attention to improvement of recreational possibilities near home. We have come to the conclusion that this is not right because an important part of the time which we do not pass in sleeping or working is used for activities in and around the home. Therefore, it is obvious that recreation in the open air has to begin near the house. The urban environment has to offer as many recreational activities as possible, and the design of these has to be such that more daily activities can also have a recreational aspect.
The very best standard of living is nothing if it is not possible to take a pleasant walk in one’s residential district, if the children cannot be allowed to play in the streets, because the risks of traffic are too great, or if while shopping you cannot find a spot for enjoying the nice weather for a moment.
72. According to the author, the importance of green spaces in the urban environment ______.
is still denied by some scientists
is not yet fully understood
is being closely studied
has been totally neglected by planners
73. The theoretical separation of living, working, traffic and recreation has led to _________.
high level of home building
the location of recreation facilities far from home
relatively little attention to recreational possibilities
the improvement of recreational possibilities in the neighbourhood
74. According to the author, green space facilities should be designed in such a way that _______.
more daily activities might take on a recreational aspect
more and more people might have access to them
an increasing number of recreational activities might be developed far from home
recreational activities might be brought into our homes
75. The main idea of this passage is that __________.
better use of green space facilities should be made so as to improve the quality of our life
attention must be directed to the improvement of recreational possibilities near home
the urban environment is providing more recreational activities than it did many years ago
priority must be given to the development of daily activities
D
Being assertive is being able to communicate with other people clearly. If you felt that you had expressed what was important to you and allowed the other person to respond in their own way then, regardless of the final outcome, you behaved assertively. It is important to remember that being assertive refers to a way of coping with confrontations ( 对抗)。 It does not mean getting your own way every time or winning some battle of wits against another person. In practice assertive behaviour is usually most likely to produce a result which is generally acceptable to all concerned, without anyone feeling that they have been unfairly treated.
Assertiveness is often wrongly confused with aggression (侵犯行为). An aggressive confrontation is when one or both parties attempt to put forward their feelings and beliefs at the expense of others. In an assertive confrontation, however, each party stands up for their personal rights, but each shows respect and understanding for the other’s viewpoint.
The reason why assertiveness may not come naturally is that we often tend to believe that we must talk around a subject rather than be direct, or that we must offer excuses or justifications for our actions.
In fact we all have a right to use assertive behaviour in a variety of situations. We are often schooled early in life to believe that sometimes our own need to express ourselves must take secondary place. For example, in dealing with those in privileged positions such as specialists, we often feel that speaking assertively is, in some way, "breaking the rules". Everybody has certain basic human rights, but often we feel guilty about exercising them.
76. According to the passage, an assertive person ________.
A. makes other people feel unfairly treated
B. puts forward his ideas at the expense of others
C. does not show respect to other people
D. speaks out what he wants to say forcefully
77. Which of the following is NOT the reason that many people prefer not to be assertive?
A. They would rather be aggressive than be assertive.
B. It’s often better to give people hints than to be straightforward.
C. Their needs to express themselves take secondary place before important persons.
D. They tend to give excuses and justifications for their actions.
78. According to the passage, one should not only express himself clearly and directly, but also
A. make other people accept his ideas
B. be careful with his manner
C. allow others to speak in their own way
D. watch other people’s response
79. In this passage, the author intends to encourage people to _____.
A. fight for their personal rights
B. be aggressive when they talk to others
C. assert themselves regardless of whether others suffer or not
D. be assertive at any time

Directions: Read the following passage and choose the most suitable heading from this list for each paragraph. There is an extra heading.
Evidences of Global Warming
Effects on Food Production Areas
Influence on Inhabitable Areas
Ways of Reducing Greenhouse Effects
Difficulties in Determining the Extent of Greenhouse Effect
Carbon Dioxide Functions
80.________ There is much public discussion in a number of countries about ways of slowing the increase in the amount of greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere. These include:
Reducing the consumption of fossil fuels. Energy conservation measures can be adopted and renewable energy sources such as solar power, can be developed.
Slowing the rate at which forests are being cleared, and introduced more reforestation programs, which would also slow the increase in carbon dioxide levels.
81._________ If global warming cannot be prevented, many countries will need to examine issues such as the planning and design of housing, particularly in low-lying areas subject to (易受。。。的,易遭。。。的) increased flooding and erosion.
82.__________ Any climatic change will affect agricultural production. Some of the world’s major food production areas could become considerably drier as a result of global warming. Other areas that are currently too dry to support agriculture may experience increased rainfall and become suitable for food production. Flood plains and river delta regions that currently grow a significant proportion of the world’s food would be permanently under water.
83.__________ Atmospheric scientists rely on satellites to collect much of their data. They have recently discovered that many of these satellites have been slipping from their orbits and so, in interpreting the measurements, scientists have assumed temperatures at a particular altitude to be lower than is actually the case. Readings have therefore been adjusted upwards. Such difficulties are just one example of the challenges facing scientists in determining the extent of global warming. There is a continuing need to research the consequences of an increased greenhouse effect.
84.__________ In examining this issue you can see that carbon dioxide, while essential for the maintenance of life on the earth, can be regarded as a pollutant in the atmosphere if its concentration becomes too high.

W: Well, Bill wants us to go to the beach for two weeks. But I’m not so excited about the idea of a beach vacation.
M: Really? Why not? It sounds very relaxing.
W: It is, but I’m afraid of skin cancer. I want to go some place where there are sports and cultural activities, like the mountains. How about you, Mike?
M: We’re thinking of spending one week at home just catching up on a lot of work that needs to be done on the house and garden. Both Carol and I have been busy and we don’t have the time to do these things.
W: That’s not a vacation!
M: I know but it can’t be helped. The remaining week we’re thinking of visiting London.
W: That sounds great. Would it be your first trip there?
M: Actually no. We went there on our honeymoon.
W: Oh, I envy you. Be sure to drop us a card from England.
M: sure. I will even bring you a little something.
W: Really? Thanks.
