A child who has once been pleased with a tale likes, as a rule, to have it retold in almost the same words, but this should not lead parents to treat printed fairy stories as formal texts. It is always much better to tell a story than read it out of a book, and, if a parent can produce what , in the actual situation of the time and the child, is an improvement on the printed text, so much the better.
A charge made against fairy tales is that they harm the child by frightening him or making him sad thinking. To prove the latter, one would have to show in a controlled experiment that children who have read fairy stories were more often sorry for cruelty than those who didn’t. As to fears, there are, I think, some cases of children being dangerously terrified by some fairy story. Often, however, this arises from the child having heard the story once. Familiarities with the story by repetition turns the pain of fear into the pleasure of a fear faced and mastered.
There are also people who object to fairy stories on the grounds that they are not objectively true, that giants, witches, two-headed dragons, magic carpets, etc. do not exist; and that, instead of being fond of the strange side in fairy tales, the child should be taught to learn the reality by studying history. I find such people, I must say so peculiar that I do not know how to argue with them. If their case were sound, the world should be full of mad men attempting to fly from New York to Philadelphia on a stick or covering a telephone with kisses in the belief that it was their beloved girl-friend.
No fairy story ever declared to be a description of the real world and no clever child has ever believed that it was.
61. The author considers that a fairy story is more effective when it is _____.
A. repeated without any change B. treated as a joke
C. made some changes by the parent D. set in the present
62. According to the passage, great fear can take place in a child when the story is _______.
A. in a realistic setting B. head for the first time
C. repeated too often D. told in a different way
63. The advantage claimed( 提出)for repeating fairy stories to young children is that it ________.
A. makes them less fearful
B. develops their power of memory
C. makes them believe there is nothing to be afraid of
D. encourages them not to have strange beliefs
64. The author’s mention of sticks and telephones is meant to suggest that ___.
A. fairy stories are still being made up
B. there is some misunderstanding about fairy tales
C. people try to modernize old fairy stories
D. there is more concern for children’s fears nowadays
65. One of the reasons why some people are not in favor of fairy tales is that ____.
A. they are full of imagination
B. they just make up the stories which are far from the truth
C. they are not interesting
D. they make teachers of history difficult to teach
C
Hardly a week goes by without some advance in technology that would have seemed incredible 50 years ago. And we can expect the rate of change to accelerate rather than slow down within our lifetime. The developments in technology are bound to have a dramatic effect on the future of work. By 2010, new technology will have revolutionized communications. People will be transmitting messages down telephone lines that previously would have been sent by post. Not only postmen but also clerks and secretaries will vanish in a paper-free society. All the routine tasks they perform will be carried on a tiny silicon chip so that they will be as obsolete as the horse and cart after the invention of the motor car. One change will make thousands, if not millions, redundant.
Even people in traditional professions, where expert knowledge has been the key, are unlikely to escape the effects of new technology. Instead of going to a solicitor, you might go to a computer which is programmed with all the most up-to-date legal information. Doctors , too, will find that an electronic competitor will be able to carry out a much quicker and more accurate diagnosis and recommend more efficient courses of treatment. In education, teachers will be largely replaced by teaching machines far more knowledgeable than any human being. Most learning will take place in the home via video conferencing. Children will still go to school though, until another place is created where they can make friends and develop social skills.
What can we do to avoid the threat of unemployment? We shouldn’t hide our heads in the sand. Unions will try to stop change but they will be fighting a losing battle. People should get computer literate as this just might save them from professional extinction. After all, there will be a few jobs left in law, education and medicine for those few individuals who are capable of writing and programming the software of the future. Strangely enough, there will still be jobs like rubbish collection and cleaning as it is tough to program tasks which are largely unpredictable.
66. According to the writer, the rate of change in technology ______.
A. will remain the same B. will slow down
C. will speed up D. can not be predicted
67. The writer expects that by 2010 new technology will have revolutionized communications and ______.
A. bookshops will not exist
B. the present postal system will have disappeared
C. people will no longer send letters
D. the postmen will have been replaced by the motor car
68. From the passage, we can infer that ______.
A. professionals won’t be affected by new technology
B. doctors won’t be as efficient as computers
C. computers can not replace lawyers
D. experts will know less in the future
69. The passage tells us that in the future _______.
A. children will not be taught at school
B. no teachers will be needed
C. teachers will be less knowledgeable
D. children will learn life skills at school
70. In the writer’s view, ______.
A. people should be prepared for the future
B. there exists no threat of unemployment
C. unions can stop the unfavorable change
D. people had better become cleaners
D
The house was quiet at 5 a. m. and Tim’s mother was asleep. Only the sound of the big freezer broke the quiet. He’d dreamt of the cave last night. The purring(轻微颤动声)of the freezer had been the sea.
Tim pulled on a sweater and put some apples into his schoolbag. It was too early for breakfast. He’d eat after he’d been through the cave, sitting on the rocks and staring at the sea.
He wished he had a proper pack. His schoolbag would have to do. What else? Sandwiches ---- but his mother might wake up if he started pulling out bread for sandwiches, she’d want to know why he had to leave so early. He settled for some biscuits, and left a note stuck to the table.
Gone to Michael’s. Back tonight, Tim.
The sky was high and soft and light outside, though the sun still wasn’t up. Even the highway up the hill was quiet as he made his way down the street. The wind from the sea was fresh and sweet.
The sandhills still breathed heat from yesterday’s sun, though the top of the sand was cool. He ran down to the beach impatiently, but there was no one, just dry sand dancing in the early wind and seabirds marching up and down watching the waves. The light changed suddenly. The first rays of sunlight stretched(延伸)across the sea. The sun was pushing its way over the edge of the world.
Over the first rocks, along to the points, Tim glanced back. The beach was still empty. The sun sailed higher in the sky.
He could see the cave now, even darker in the morning light. The sand turned silver then dark gold as the water flowed away from it. He had to force himself to go closer. Why was it so much more mysterious(神秘的)now? But it would be silly to go back now after so much trouble. He needn’t go in all the way.
71. What did Tim do at the beginning of the story?
A. He left the house quietly.
B. he had breakfast at home.
C. he left a note on the freezer.
D. he put a sweater in his schoolbag.
72. “He settled for some biscuits” (in Paragraph 3) means that Tim ____.
A. had to leave the biscuits on the table
B. liked biscuits better than sandwiches
C. had to take biscuits instead of sandwiches
D. could only find some biscuits in the kitchen
73. What made it possible for Tim to see the entry to the cave?
A. The height of the first rocks.
B. The ups and downs of the waves.
C. The changes in the position of the sun.
D. The vast stretch of the sunlight beach.
74. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the story?
A. The sea looked like a piece of gold.
B. Seabirds flew away when Tim arrived.
C. Tim was the only person on the beach.
D. The sky got dark as Tim reached the cave.
75. In the story, Tim’s mood(心情)changed from ____.
A. loneliness to craziness B. anxiousness to excitement
C. helplessness to happiness D. eagerness to nervousness

英 语 试 题
第二卷(两部分,共45分)
第一部分 阅读表达
Which animal is “man’s best friend”? We all know it’s the dog. Dogs have earned the love and respect of humans. Many have given their own lives to save people. Dogs are faithful and devoted. For example Bobby, a Skye terrier, went to market with his Scottish master every day. After the man died, Bobby would not move from his grave. He stayed there for about ten years. He stayed _______________________.
Dogs serve many useful functions. They are good at watching and herding sheep. Wherever sheep are raised, a sheep-herding dog is developed. For instance, there is the German Shepherd dog. In Scotland, there is the Shetland sheep dog. Both are recognized breeds.
Specially trained dogs lead the blind. Such dogs are carefully selected. It takes about three to five months to train them. Guide dogs will refuse to cross a busy street unless the traffic has stopped.
One interesting dog is the St. Bernard. How did it get its name? It was developed by the monks of the St. Bernard Monastery. This is located in the Alps of Switzerland. The dog weighs from 140 to 220 pounds. It’s one of the heaviest of all dogs.
St. Bernards are famous for rescuing travelers in the snow. A St. Bernard named Barry rescued 40 persons. This was over a period of years.
There is a popular misconception about these dogs. They do not carry flasks around their necks. Sir Edwin Landseer misrepresented them this way in a painting.

Dear Editor,
I’m a middle school student. I hear that a power station will be built near Mt.Yunxia, a place of interest. We know the power station will provide us with plenty of power and as a result, the local economy will develop rapidly, but many citizens and I are against the plan. To build the power station, many people will have to move away and a great number of trees will have to be cut down.
What’s worse, once the scenery of Mt. Yunxia is destroyed, it can never be restored. Therefore, this plan is not good for protecting the environment. We suggest the city government should think over this plan.
Yours,
Li Ping
