A sign can be found in the front yard of a house in the US. The people living here want to let their dog play outside and ensure it won’t run into the street. So, they hire a company to set up an “invisible fence”, an electric wire buried in the ground around the yard. The dog wears a special collar and when it walks near to the “fence”, the wire will send out a small shock. The dog quickly learns to stay away from the edge of the yard. As it says at the bottom of the sign, the fence will keep your dog “safe” (away from the street) and “at home” (contained inside the yard). The small word “BRAND” printed in blue means that “Invisible Fence” is registered as the company’s brand name. Similarly, the “TM” printed after “your dog safe at home” stands for “trade mark”, a slogan registered specifically to one company. 56. The people set up an “invisible fence” _________. Stepping into a pool of water is common enough, but who could ever imagine stepping into a pool of fish? In February of 1974, Bill Tapp, an Australian farmer, saw a rain of fish that covered his farm. How surprised he must have been! What caused this strange occurrence? This is a question that had long puzzled people who study fish. The answer turned out to be a combination of wind and storm. When it is spring in the northern part of the world, it is fall in Australia. Throughout the autumn season, terrible storms arise and rains flood the land. The strong winds sweep over Australia like huge vacuum cleaners (吸尘器), collecting seaweed, pieces of wood, and even schools of fish. Strong winds may carry these bits of nature for many miles before vacuum dropping them on fields, houses, and astonished people. Although they seem unusual, fish-falls occur frequently in Australia. When Bill Tapp was asked to describe the scene of fish, he remarked, “They look like millions of dead birds falling down.” His statement is not surprising. The wonders of the natural world are as common as rain. Nature, with its infinite wonders, can create waterfalls that flow upward and fish that fall out of the sky. 59. What is this passage about? A. A sad story. ?B. Australia’s northern part. C. A rain of fish. ? ?D. The damage done by floods. 60. Fish-falls occur in Australia __________. A. quite often ? ?B. on large farms C. only in winter ?D. when the air is calm 61. The underlined word “infinite” is closest in meaning to “__________”. A. easy B. difficult ?C. countless D. dangerous
C
With fifteen years Britain and other nations should be well on with the building of big industrial plants for the recycling of waste. The word rubbish could lose its meaning because everything which goes into the dustbin would be made into something useful. Even the most dangerous and unpleasant wastes would provide energy of nothing else.
The latest project is to take a city of around half a million citizens and discover exactly what raw (未经加工的) materials go into it and what go out. The aim is to find out how much of these raw materials could be provided if a plant for recycling waste were built just outside the city. This plant would recycle not only metal such as steel, lead and copper, but also paper and rubber as well.
Another new project is being set up to discover the best ways of sorting and separating the rubbish. When this project is complete, the rubbish will be treated like this: First, it will pass through sharp metal bars which will tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is usually packed; then it will pass through a powerful fan to separate the lightest elements (元素) from the heavy solids; after that rollers will break up everything that can be broken. Finally, the rubbish will pass under magnets (磁铁), which will remove the bits of iron and steel; the rubber and plastic will then be sorted out in the final step.
The first full-scale (全方位的) big recycling plants are perhaps fifteen years away. Indeed, with the growing cost of transporting rubbish to more distant dustbins, some big cities will be forced to build their own recycling plants before long.
62. The underlined phrase “be well on with…” most probably means __ .
??A. have completed what was started B. get ready to start
??C. have achieved a great deal in D. put an end to
63. What is NOT mentioned as a part of the recycling process (过程) described in
??Paragraph 3?
???A. Breaking up whatever is breakable.
???B. Sharpening metal bars.
???C. Separating light elements from the heavy ones.
???D. Sorting out small pieces of metal.
64. What’s the main reason for big cities to build their own recycling plants?
??A. To deal with wastes more economically.
??B. To protect the environment from pollution.
??C. To get raw materials locally.
??D. To get advantage from those plants.
65. The passage is mainly about .
??A. a cheap way to get energy B. the position of recycling plants
??C. new ways of recycling wastes D. the probability of city environment

There are some very good things about open education. This way of teaching allows the students to grow as people, and to develop their own interests in many subjects. Open education allows students to be responsible for their own education, as they are responsible for what they do in life. Some students do badly in a traditional classroom. The open classroom may allow them to enjoy learning. Some students will be happier in an open education school. They will not have to worry about grades or rules. For students who worry about these things a lot, it is a good idea to be in an open classroom.
But many students will not do well in an open classroom. For some students, there are too few rules. These students will do little in school. They will not make good use of open education. Because open education is so different from traditional education, these students may have a problem getting used to making so many choices. For many students it is important to have some rules in the classroom. They worry about the rules even when there are no rules. Even a few rules will help this kind of students. The last point about open education is that some traditional teachers do not like it. Many teachers do not believe in open education. Teachers who want to have an open classroom may have many problems at their schools.
You now know what open education is. Some of its good points and bad points have been explained. You may have your own opinion about open education. The writer thinks that open education is a good idea, but only in theory. In actual fact, it may not work very well in a real class or school. The writer believes that most students, but of course not all students, need some structure in their classes. They want and need to have rules. In some cases, they must be made to study some subjects. Many students are pleased to find subjects they have to study interesting. They would not study those subjects if they did not have to.

Normally a student must attend a certain number of courses in order to graduate, and each course that he attends gives him a credit that he may count towards a degree. In many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty-six courses, each lasting for one semester. A typical course consists of three classes per week for fifteen weeks; while attending a university a student will probably attend four or five courses during each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semesters each year. It is possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course, though this is not in fact done as a regular practice. For every course that he follows a student is given a grade, which is recorded, and the record is available for the student to show to future employers. All this imposes (负担) a constant pressure and strain of work, but in spite of this some students still find time for great activity in student affairs. Elections to positions in student organizations arouse much enthusiasm. Students who advise the academic authorities usually perform the effective work of maintaining discipline. Any student, who is thought to have broken the rules, for example by cheating, has to appear before a student court. With the enormous numbers of students, the operation of the system does involve a certain amount of activity. A student who has held one of these positions of authority is much respected and it will be of benefit to him later in his career. 71. Normally a student would at least attend __________ classes each week. ?A. 12 B. 15 C. 20 D. 36 72. An American student is allowed _________. A. to live in a different university

??D. they are heavily involved in student affairs
74. The student organizations seem to be effective in _________.
??A. dealing with the academic affairs of the university
??B. keeping up the students’ enthusiasm for social activities
??C. ensuring the students observe university regulations
??D. evaluating students’ performance by bringing them before a court
75. Some students are enthusiastic for positions in student organizations probably

One possible version:
Are private classes necessary?
More and more middle school students are taking all kinds of training classes at the weekend. There are two different viewpoints about it. Some think it necessary. First of all, it’s more effective to study with a teacher than by themselves. Secondly, it can consolidate what is learnt in class. Besides, they can learn a lot more. Others think it unnecessary. For one thing, students can easily become dependent, and for another, students need time to relax. What’s more, the purpose of many training classes is to make money. In my opinion, whether a training class is needed just depends. If you are really very weak at or interested in a certain subject, maybe it’s OK (good) for you. But be sure to choose a good and suitable class or teacher, otherwise it would be a waste of time and money. (117 words)

W: Hi, Xiao Wang, and welcome back. How is the West Coast?
M: Terrific. I had a wonderful time. It was really nice to get away from the city for a
??while.
W: What did you think of Los Angeles?
M: It was all right. I liked it better than I thought I would. It’s very clean and spacious, and it’s got lots of trees. The problem is transportation. The bus service is terrible, and, of course, they don’t have an underground train, so it’s little difficult to get around. We had to rent a car.
W: And what did you see?
M: Oh, the usual thing. We took a drive around Hollywood and looked at the stars’ home, and then we went to Universal Studios and Disneyland.
W: How did you like Disneyland?
M: It was great. We really enjoyed it. We took all the rides, some of them twice, and had lots of fun. I felt just like a child again.
W: Was the weather good?
M: Oh, yeah. It was nice and warm in Los Angeles and cool but comfortable in San Francisco?
W: Cool in San Francisco? That’s surprising.
M: Yeah, it surprised us a bit, too. We didn’t take any sweaters or anything. But they say it’s always like that in August. Anyway, I just loved it. It’s probably the most beautiful town in the U.S.—all those hills, and those beautiful old Victorian houses.
W: So, you liked it better than Los Angeles?
M: Oh, yes. There’s much more to see and do. And because it’s smaller than Los Angeles, it’s a lot easier to get around. There are lots of buses and streetcars, and of course, the cable cars.
W: What did you like best?
M: Oh, I don’t know. It’s hard to say. I liked Golden Gate Park and Fishermen’s Wharf. But I guess, most of all, I liked the cable car ride—that was the most fun.

M: Just a mistake? Do you realize that I’ve invited some very important people to dinner?
??That?mistake could make me lose an important business partner.
W: I’m sorry, sir. I suggest you call them and explain the problem. I’m sure you’ll find

M: I can’t get in touch with them now. They are probably on their way at this very minute.
??Surely you could find one more table in.
W: Not unless you’d like me to put you in the hall, sir.
M: Well. Ok. That’s better than nothing.

M: Math Department. Dr. Webster speaking.
W: Hello, Professor Webster. This is Janet Hill calling. I live two doors down from your teaching assistant, Don Williams. Don asked me to call you because he’s lost his voice and can’t talk to you himself.
M: Lost his voice? That’s too bad. Is there anything I can do for him?
W: Well, he has a class this afternoon from two-thirty to four, and he won’t be able to make it. But he doesn’t want to call it off either.
M: Does he want me to try to find somebody else to teach it?
W: No, not exactly. What he wants to do is get someone to go in for him—just to pass back the midterm exams. He’s already marked them, and they’re on the desk in his office. The whole thing wouldn’t take more than … ten minutes or so.
M: Two-thirty, you say? Well, I’m free then, so I could do it for him. Where’s his class?
W: Carter Hall, Room 214. Will you need his office key to get the exams? I could bring it
??to you.
M: Well, actually, that won’t be necessary. We have a master key in the Math Department, so I can get into his office.
W: Thank you, Professor Webster.
M: My pleasure.
W: Don doesn’t have another class to teach until Thursday, and hopefully he’ll be able to
??talk by then. He’ll call you as soon as he can.
M: Okay. Thanks for the news about Don and tell him not to worry about this.

M: I really don’t know what to do this summer. I can’t afford to just sit around, and there don’t seem to be any jobs suitable for me.
W: Why don’t you try house-sitting? Last summer my friend Margaret house-sat for the Dodds when they went away on vacation. Mr. Dodd hired Margaret to stay in their house because he didn’t want it left empty.
M: You mean the Dodds paid Margaret just to live in their house?
W: It wasn’t that easy. She had to cut the grass and water the houseplants. And when Eric house-sat for Dr. Cohen, he had to take care of her pets.
M: House-sitting sounds like a good job. I guess it’s little like baby-sitting, except you’re taking care of a house instead of children.
W: The student employment office still has a few jobs posted.
M: Do I just have to fill out an application form?
W: Margaret and Eric have to interview with the homeowners and provide three
??references each.
M: That seems like a lot of trouble for a summer job.
W: Well, the homeowners want to make sure that they can trust the house-sitter. You know, they?want to make sure you’re not the type who’ll throw wild parties in their house, or move a group of friends in with you.
M: House-sitters who do that sort of thing probably aren’t paid then.
W: Usually they’re paid anyway just because the homeowners want to save trouble. But if the homeowner reported it, then the house-sitter wouldn’t be able to get another job. So why don’t you apply?
M: Yeah, I think I will.

W: Well, Mr. Smith, we have had an interesting discussion about your work. Now, tell us something about your after-work activities.
M: I guess not much different from everyone else. I’m interested in sports, and I run about 3 miles every day. I particularly enjoy cross-country running, where you have to run across fields, jump over streams and so on. While I’m running I think about all sorts of things, and at the end of a run I’m sometimes surprised to find that I’ve managed to solve a problem that was on my mind.
Next year I’m going to try the London Marathon. It’s a long, hard race—26 miles, or 42 kilometers—and you have to be tough to finish, but I very much want to do it. I worry a bit about getting old, and I’d like to prove to myself that I’m still almost as fit as I was twenty years ago. I’m interested in climbing as well as running. I’ll never become an expert climber, but I know what I’m doing in the mountains. I successfully completed a course in snow and ice climbing when I was younger, and I’ve done some easy climbs in the Alps during the last few years. My wife doesn’t share my interest in mountains. She agreed to go climbing with me once, but she found that she felt ill as soon as she got above 1, 000 meters, so we decide to follow different hobbies.
W: You certainly seem to enjoy various types of activities. All right, Mr. Smith. Thanks
??for your interesting talk.
