BERLIN -- The mystery surrounding the poisoning death of a former Russian spy has veered to Germany, where investigators today found traces of radiation in an apartment connected to a businessman who met the spy on the day he fell ill. Police said "hints" of radiation were detected in the Hamburg flat of Dmitry Kovtun's ex-wife.Traces were also discovered in the nearby suburban home of the former wife's mother.Kovtun met ex-KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko on Nov.1 in London, where police suspect he was exposed to the radioactive polonium-210 that killed him three weeks later.
A Russian businessman, Lugovoy is reportedly ill in a Moscow hospital.
Chemical experts searched in Hamburg and questioned Kovtun's 31-year-old former spouse.Authorities said that although contamination was detected, they did not find a source of radiation in either building. In many businesses, computers have largely replaced paperwork, because they are fast, flexible, and do not make mistakes. As one banker said, “Unlike humans computers never have a bad day.” And they are honest. Many banks advertise that their transactions are untouched by human hands “and therefore safe from human temptation.” Clearly, computers have no reason to steal money. But they also have no conscience, and the growing number of computer crimes shows they can be used to steal.
Computer criminals don’t use guns. And even if they are caught, it is hard to punish them because there are no witness and often no evidence.A computer cannot remember who used it; it simply does what it is told. The head teller at a New York City bank used a computer to steal more than one and a half billion dollars in just four years. No one noticed this theft because he moved the money from one account to another. Each time a customer he had robbed questioned the balance in his account, the teller claimed a computer error, then replaced the missing money from someone else’s account. This man was caught only because he was a gambler. When the police broke up an illegal gambling operation, his name was in the records.
Some employees use the computer’s power to get revenge on employers they consider unfair.Recently, a large insurance company fired its computer-tape librarian for reasons that involved her personal rather her professional life. She was give thirty day’s notice. It those thirty days, she erased all the company’s computerized records.
Most computer criminals have been minor employees. Now police wonder if this is “the tip of the iceberg.” As one official says, “I have a feeling that there is more crime out there than we are catching. What we are seeing now is all so poorly done.I wonder what the real experts are dong---- the one who really know how a computer works.”

In the past ten years, America’s National Basketball Association (NBA) has grown increasingly dependent on the rest of the world to supply players.
When Michael Jordan and Larry Bird won gold in Barcelona in 1992., the Americans were praised for teaching the world how to play basketball. This season, however, 20 percent of NBA rosters will be filled by non-Americans.NBA commissioner David Stern happily embraces the trend. On a visit to Paris in October, Stern outlined his vision for the future which is likely to see Europe hosting NBA games by 2010.
The NBA is now planning to take China by storm.
“Our experience in China has been that it is going to be explosive in its growth,” said Stern. The strategy in China is television.“We’ve made 14 deals in China with local and national networks on cable and satellite.” The success of Chinese centre Yao Ming has paved the way for the NBA marketing blitz in China. The NBA, which is broadcasted in more than 200 countries in 42 languages, will put that to the test in October 2004 when the Houston Rockets play two pre-season games against the Sacramento Kings in Beijing and Shanghai. The NBA knows that it needs a global market to compensate for tough times on home soil.
“It doesn’t matter where the players come from, all the NBA teams now know that they have to scout internationally,” said Terry Lyons, the NBA’s vice-president of international public relations.“It has increased the level of competition here.” As Frenchman Tony Parker and Argentine Emanuel Ginobili showed in winning championship rings with respect of their American peers.Others, such as the Houston Rockets’ Chinese centre Yao Ming --- number one draft pick in 2002---and the Detroit Pistons’ 18-year-old Serb Darko Milicic ---number two overall in this year’s draft ---are icons in-waiting.It is the ultimate revolution --- the rest of the world teaching the US how to play basketball.

第一节:阅读表达(15分)
Hong Kong Or Shanghai? There are few more reduplicate conversations around the dinner tables of SAR financial and government sorts than the perennial question of whether Hong Kong will be eclipsed by its northern competitor.
The official line in Hong Kong is that there is room enough for two Chinese financial centres.Economies like the United States support multiple centres serving specific industry clusters and regions.New York and Chicago compete and complement on another at the same time, goes the reasoning.
Hong Kong's advantage is its clean government, predictable and common law based legal environment, and international orientation. The city is wired into the overseas Chinese network by bonds of language and history, has its Guangdong industrial hinterland and will remain the international finance raising centre of China even as Shanghai develops a far larger domestic finance base.
On the “eclipse” side, the case is basically that every great trading port has its day.Just as the Venetian states and Liverpool feel off the trading map as the locus of trade and economic activity shifted, so Hong Kong's “competitive advantage” has a narrow window. The decline might be relative, but Shanghai's industrial, entrepreneurial and political power means that must dominate.
Hong Kong well knows the advantage of critical mass over ambitious competitors that protest to try harder. It has had that relationship with Singapore for years .The southern city state has ambitiously courted fund managers, chip markers and software vendors with subsidies and freebies, but Singapore continues to chase without seriously threatening Hong Kong's Asian business status.
Recently, through its rebanding efforts, Hong Kong is intending to differentiate the city in the minds of outsiders. That seems a bit silly, but harmless.
______, it doesn't matter whether Shanghai rules, as long as Hong Kong does what it does best, rather than ape what it believes a competitor such as Shanghai might do, if and when it becomes the dominant commercial Chinese city.

M: Bye!
(Text 10)
Good morning, Julian.Yes, this is Eric.Look, I’d like to discuss something with you.I’m thinking of opening a small candy store downtown. There are four places I might rent. The first place is on Mckinley Street next to the cinema. It rents for $400 a month. The second place is on Anderson Road at the corner of Spring Street across from the Village Park. The third place is on Main Street across from the camera shop and behind a high school. The second place is the cheapest, $350 a month. The third place is the most expensive at $500 a month. The fourth place on Benefit Street is across the street form the high school and costs $450 a month.
I’m just not sure which place to choose.Of course, Main Street is centrally located, but the place on Mckinley Street is $100 cheaper. And the cinema probably has a candy counter, so I lean toward choosing the second place. It’s across from the park where children play, and children like candy.Well, if you think of anything, let me know.Bye-bye.
