IV阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
I had my first job at the age of thirteen, when a friend of my mother's who owned a bookshop hired me for six hours a week to help her in the shop. I was very proud to earn my own pocket money and my parents never interfered with how I spent it, even when I spent it foolishly. They believed that by earning money, spending it, and learning from my mistakes, I would become more mature and responsible about how to handle work, relationships with others, and money.
Like many American parents, my parents also let me and my brothers do things over which they worried a great deal. When I was sixteen, for example, after I finished high school and before I entered university, I wanted to spend the summer months traveling around Europe. My mother was against the idea of my traveling alone at such a young age, but my father felt that it would be a great experience for me. In the end, my father won the argument on condition that I limited my traveling to France, my mother's home, where I had many uncles, aunts 'and cousins spread out through the country who could provide shelter and help if I needed it.
Three years later, when he was eighteen, my younger brother decided to take a year off after his first year in university and travel through the United States and the Caribbean. Again my mother was very worried and not eager to see my brother leave school, but my father encouraged him and my brother had a fascinating year working his way on trains and ships to earn passage to different ports and cities, and discovering many fascinating places and people.
These kinds of experiences are probably rare for children in many countries but in the US
they are fairly common. Most parents start pushing their children at a young age to do small things by themselves. By the time they have finished high school, many American kids have already had part-time jobs, traveled around the US or other countries on their own, have selected the university they plan to attend and maybe even decided on their future career, and so on.
56. Why did the writer's parents allow their children to do what they want
A. Because they thought that their children would become braver.
B. Because they believed that their two sons would earn some pocket money.
C. Because they thought that their children would find a job earlier.
D. Because they thought that it would be good to their children.
57. What did the writer think of his brother's travel
A. He thought his brother gained valuable experiences during the travel.
B. He thought his brother earned a lot of money by working.
C. He thought his brother didn't disappoint his father.
D. He thought his brother's travel was better than his to France.
58. Which of the following statements is TRUE
A. The author went to France in order to see his relatives.
B. The writer's mother managed to prevent the children doing what she thought was
dangerous.
C. The writer's brother gave up his university to travel through the USA and the
Caribbean.
D. American kids do things by themselves to make preparations for the future with the
encouragement of their parents.
59. The best title for the passage probably is
A. Part-time B. Independence
C. Pocket money D. Experiences

1 still can't believe it! Marian Carlson, the homecoming queen, was Egare's date at the ball
last night.
That is one for the books! Marian is one of the most beautiful girls in our school. I thought
for sure she would be going with Paul, the captain of our school's football team. Egare is such a
bookworm. What has she seen in him
Obviously Paul was taking Marian for granted and believed that she would go to the ball with him without his inviting her. Contrary to Paul's attitude, Egare sang high praise for her beauty as well as her wisdom and even gave her a large bouquet of flowers and a book of love poems, so she was persuaded to dance with him all through the ball. When Paul found out, he hit the ceiling!
This just goes to turn out that he who laughs last, laughs best.
Who would have ever believed it Paul has always been too sure of himself.

Despite their name, the Want Family don't want much. They want enough money for a nice house and a holiday every year. But they don't want to be millionaires. They want to do well at their jobs. But they don't want to be the big boss. They do want to spend time improving their
garden, visiting their families and taking their two kids, Nicolas and Leuan, to McDonald's for lunch. But they don't want to be famous.
The Wants just want to be normal. That's why they are famous. They have been selected as the most normal family in Britain. After a six-month search for the most ordinary family in Britain, the Wants were selected from hundreds of applicants.
John wants a job in marketing for a food company. Claire has a part-time job renting out children's play equipment. John doesn't tmderstand why they were chosen to represent ordinary
English families. How are they normal
That is not a bad question. Nearly everyone does some of the things that the Wants do. But very few people do all of them. There have been great changes in the social structure of British life. It is becoming more common for people to have children when they are older than the Wants, and to have one child instead of two. A household with two children may be headed by a single parent, usually the mother. Or perhaps dad and mum are still together, but not married. Or maybe dad and mum are married. Dad goes out to work and mum stays at home and looks after the kids. They have traditional values -- every weekend the whole family goes to church.
"What we have here is not an average family, but a traditional family," says Cary Cooper, professor of philosophy at Lancaster University. "There is no such thing as a normal family anymore, in the way there was 20 or 30 years ago. Of course the Wants exist, but for what do we need to celebrate them " Perhaps because we think normal families are an endangered species.
Examples of them have to be preserved (保护) to show future generations.
64. The Wants were selected as the most normal family in Britain because
A. they want to live a happy life
B. they don't want much
C. they don't want to be famous
D. they want to be normal
65. The following statements describe the great changes in British life EXCEPT that
A. people have kids later than 20 or 30 years ago
B. some children are brought up by a single parent
C. most families go to church every weekend
D. it's more common for families to have only one kid
66. We may infer from the passage that
A. most British families hold traditional values
B. traditional families are becoming fewer and fewer
C. future generations are expected to study traditional families
D. traditional families no longer exist in Britain
67. What might be the most suitable title for this passage
A. An Ordinary Family
B. Families of Future Generations
C. Celebration of a Family Competition
D. A Normal But Special Family

As you are soon on your way to Eastern Europe, here are a few tips on what you should pack. In general, pack lightly, with only the most basic clothes. People dress casually in .Eastern Europe, so you don't need to bring along your smartest clothing.
At the risk of going against our own advice by weighing down your luggage, we suggest you consider bringing along the following things, which we found particularly useful in Eastern
Europe.
Batteries: If your camera, flash light, or other appliances ( 电器) run on batteries, bring an enough supply along. Certain types of batteries don't exist in Eastern Europe, and those that do often don't last very long.
Calculators: Many travelers find it useful to figure out foreign exchange rates on a calculator. We suggest a credit-card calculator which fits into your wallet or purse.
Cash: We have found it good to have a supply of small-unit US bills ($1 and $5) to use in hard-currency (硬通货) stores, to buy international train tickets, etc. The hard-currency stores never seem to have the right change, and thus you may lose out without some "petty cash" on hand.
Electric Current Adapters: If you bring any appliances,' remember that the electricity in Eastern Europe uses 220 volts AC, not the standard 110 volts of'North America. A l I0-volt appliance will soon burn out when attached to an unchanged 220-volt plug. Get in touch with the
Franzus Company, 352 Park Ave. South. New York, NY 10010 (Tel.212/889-5850) , and ask for their booklet, "Foreign Electricity Is No Dark Secret".
Language Tools: One of Europe's big challenges is communicating with the local people, since their languages are so different from our own. To help overcome difficulties, you might buy phrase books before you go -- you won't find them once you are in Eastern Europe.
If you are interested in learning an Eastern European language in more detail, we recommend the tape course produced by Audio Forum. In each course you listen to native speakers on a tape and follow along in a textbook. You can ask Audio Forum for their catalog( 目录) at 96 Broad St., Guiford, CT 06437 (Tel. toll free 800/243-1234) .
Money Belts: A money belt is especially helpful when you have many documents to carry around. The best one we found is made by Eagle Greek Travel Gear, 143 Cedros Ave. (P.O. box 651 ), Solona Beach, CA 92075 (Tel.619/755-9399, or toll free 800/874-9925 ) outside California.
Traveler's Checks: These are necessary. Bring your traveler's checks in small to medium
unit ( $ 10, $20, or $50 ) to change a little bit at a time, so as not to be left with a lot of local money. To be on the safe side, be sure to copy down the check numbers in two places, just in case something happens to the checks.
68. Which of the following mentioned in the passage are about money matters
A. Cash and Traveler's Checks.
B. Money Belts and Language Tools.
C. Cash and Electric Adapters.
D. Batteries and other electric appliances.
69. Eagle Greek Travel Gear is a company producing __
A. calculators B. tapes
C. electric current adapters D. money belts
70. This passage is probably taken from __
A. a bank notice B. a holiday advertisement
C. a traveler's guide D. an electrical safety booklet

There's a television commercial that really annoys me. It begins with a man describing his
beautiful home and nice car, but he admits that in order to have those things, he's gotten in debt
"up to his eyeballs."
The premise (前提) is a common one: a family owning the good life through credit cards (信用卡) . It's the advertisement's conclusion that disturbs me, because it recommends consolidating debt to lower monthly payments. I suppose I can't blame the lender that created the ad. However, I do have a problem with the premise that lowering monthly payments is a sound way. It appears the government is becoming concerned as well.
Pressure from the government has also led some of the major credit-card issuers to increase their minimum ( 最小的 ) monthly payment requirements from around 2 percent per month to 4 percent. I welcome this move.
If you have a credit-card balance of $10,000 and make only the 2 percent minimum payment each month, your balance will not be paid off for about 58 years and you would have paid nearly $29,000 in interest. At a 4 percent monthly payment rate, your balance would be paid off in 15 years, and your interest expense would be a bit under $6,000.
For years, we have been encouraged to buy now, pay later. College students are given credit cards with credit limits too attractive to pass up. The availability of easy credit and very low repayment requirements has helped to create a generation of people who have been encouraged to buy whatever we want without having to save or wait for it. The result is a society with heavy debt.
If I could redesign that TV ad, I'd have an announcer talk about the problem with debt
consolidation that is likely to happen, although it would not.
71. The television commercial annoys the writer because
A. a man is describing his beautiful home and nice car
B. it implies that the good life is based on heavy debt
C. it is cheating those who are watching TV
D. it doesn't talk about the problem with credit cards
72. According to the passage, the advertisement suggests people
A. turning to the government for help
B. choosing credit cards with low interest
C. living a good life through credit cards
D. reducing their minimum monthly payment
73. The example in the fourth paragraph intends to show that
A. the more money you borrow, the better
B. it's right to increase the minimum payment requirements
C. the 4 percent monthly payment rate is the best one
D. there is no need for credit-card holders to pay interest
74. The underlined phrase "pass up" (in Paragraph 5) probably means
A. refuse to accept sth. B. give sth. to sb. else
C. become a part of sth. D. choose to make use of sth.
75. What would be the best title for the passage
A. Credit Easy to Get but Hard to Pay
B. Discussion on a Television Commercial
C. Credit Cards Won't Buy the Good Life
D. The Problem with Debt Consolidation Happens

One possible version:
This is a story of a man who thinks he has cancer. Everything around him looks discouraging.
He goes to bed, takes his medicine and writes his will because he is sure that the test results will
indicate that he has cancer.
He goes back to the hospital but has good news. The doctor has told the man that he does not
have cancer after all. So suddenly he feels happy, healthy and full of energy again and goes to play
tennis.
From the pictures we conclude that our psychology or mental state plays an important role in
many aspects of our daily life. Our feelings and attitudes color the way we behave.

W: I use the calculator on my mobile to keep track of my calories.
M: Yes, a growing girl needs about 2,000 calories a day.

M: It's Alice's birthday tomorrow.
W: Are you sure I think it should be the day after tomorrow.
M: Well, let me see. Oh, I'm sorry. You're right. It is the day after tomorrow. Shall
we buy her a present
W: Yes, of course. Shall we give her some flowers
M: Flowers are lovely. But I think it's better to buy her a nice box of chocolates.
W: Alice doesn't like sweet things. Don't you know that
M: You're right. Er ... I know. We can give her a record. She loves music.
W: That's a good idea. Let's go to the music shop and choose one for her.

(W) We ail know that a healthy diet and regular exercise are the keys to staying in
shape. But why try so hard to lose that extra fat when you can actually look 3-5
kilograms slimmer with a few fashion tricks Here are some style secrets from
fashion experts:
* To make your face appear slimmer, choose drop earrings, but be sure that
they don't drop below the jaw. Necklines can be very important. Pick v- necks, low
necks or open collars. They create a slimming image.
* Choose clothing all in one color to give yourself a long, lean look. Avoid
shapeless clothing; loose, oversized clothes make you appear wider and heavier.
Avoid tight clothing that will emphasize your heavy areas.
* Stand up straight. Good posture always makes you look better.
