ITS present condition is chaotic (混乱的), its future is uncertain. And now Iraq is suffering from a loss of its past.
Baghdad's museums and libraries are practically empty. Thousands of priceless artifacts (文物) have been stolen or destroyed by people in Baghdad almost overnight. Since US forces entered the capital and brought about the fall of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, the city has suffered from a loss of law and order.
The serious situation led archaeologists from all over the world to meet in Paris on April 17. They tried to work out how best to save Iraq's cultural relics. Standing outside the destroyed Iraqi National Museum, Damerji felt a huge loss.
"The Iraqi National Museum is the only museum in the world that shows all the steps in the history of mankind," said Damerji, professor of archaeology at Baghdad University. These witnesses(见证者) to our own development have gone, they are gone."
While there was little left to steal, heartbroken employees at the museum stayed to guard the broken pots, statues and other artifacts. They would protect the few remains of the ancient Mesopotamian civilizations (美索不达米亚文明) until experts arrived to try and piece them back together.
In the ancient city of Babylon (巴比伦), about 50km south of today's Baghdad lay one of the seven wonders of the ancient world — the Hanging Gardens. These were filled with many levels of trees, flowers and waterfalls.
"All this shows that Iraq has a very, very rich cultural relics which is respected by people as one of the richest cultural relics in the world," the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO,联合国教科文组织), deputy director Mounir Bouchenaki said.

Bhopal chemical leak, December 1984, Bhopal India
An explosion in the Union Carbide chemical plant in Bhopal India, released a deadly gas called methyl isocyanate, which is used to make pesticides. The gas formed a cloud that killed 2,500 people; another 50,000---100,000 people became ill. Trees and plants in the area became yellow and brittle. The explosion was caused by a mechanical failure that was not noticed in time to stop it.
Exxon Valdez oil spill, March 1989, Alaska, U.S.
On March 24, 1989, 11 million gallons of crude oil spilled into Prince William sound from the tanker Exxon Valdez when its hull hit a reef and tore open. Chernobyl, April 1986, USSR
At 1:23 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, 1986, the reactor blew at the nuclear power plant in Chernobyl, ripping open the core, blowing the roof off the building, starting more than 30 fires, and allowing radioactive material to leak into the air. Some 31 people were killed and 200 people were treated for radiation poisoning. Still at risk are 135,000 people from the 179 villages within 20 miles of the plant who were exposed to the radiation before being evacuated. Glaring violations of safety rules were at the bottom of this tragic event.
Love Canal, 1953, New York, U.S.
Love Canal, a small town in upstate New York near Niagara Falls, was destroyed by waste from chemical plants. Beginning in 1947, chemical companies could legally dump their waste products into the canal. The area developed a foul smell, trees lost their bark, and leaves fell throughout the year. A health survey found that the drinking water contained excessive levels of 82 industrial chemicals, 7 of which were thought to cause cancer. The people of Love Canal had an unusually high rate of cancer and birth defects. Eventually, many of the houses had to be abandoned. Today, the town has been partly cleaned up and some families have moved back to area.
Three Mile Island, 1979, Pennsylvania, U.S.
On March 28, 1979, the worst accident in U.S. nuclear reactor history occurred at the Three Mile Island power station, near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. No one was killed, and very little radioactivity was released into the air when coolant (the fluid that keeps a machine cool) escaped from the reactor core due to a combination of mechanical failure and human error. After 10 years and $1 billion in cleanup costs, the lower extremes of the reactor are still so radioactive that workers must use remote-control equipment to remove the remaining fragments of fuel core.

I’m usually fairly doubtful about any research that concludes that people are either happier or unhappier or more or less certain of themselves than they were 50 years ago. While any of these statements might be true, they are practically impossible to prove scientifically. Still, I was struck by a report that concluded that today’s children are far more anxious than children in the 1950s. in fact, the analysis(分析) showed that normal children aged 9 to 17 exhibit a higher level of anxiety today than children who were treated for mental illness 50 years ago.
Why are America’s kids so stressed The report gives two main causes: increasing physical isolation(孤立) and a growing feeling that the world is a more dangerous place.
Given that we can’t turn the clock back, adults can still do plenty to help the next generation.
At the top of the list is helping develop a better understanding of the limits of individualism(个人主义). No child is an island. Strengthening social ties helps build communities(团体) and protect individuals against stress.
To help kids build stronger connections with others, you can pull the plug on TVs and computers. Your family will thank you later. They will have more time for face-to-face relationships, and they will get more sleep.
Limit the amount of virtual(虚拟的) violence within the reach of your children. It’s not just video games and movies; children see a lot of murder and crime on the local news.
Keep your expectations for your children reasonable. Many highly successful people never attended Harvard or Yale.
Make exercise part of your daily life. It will help you deal with your own anxieties and provide a good model for your kids. Sometimes anxiety is unavoidable. But it doesn’t have to ruin your life.
52. The author thinks that the conclusions of any research about people’s state of mind are ___________.
A. surprising B. reasonable C. believable D. questionable
53. What does the author mean when he says, “we can’t turn the clock back”
A. It’s impossible to slow down the speed of change.
B. The social reality children are facing cannot be changed.
C. Lessons learned from the past should not be forgotten.
D. It’s impossible to forget what happened in the past.
54. The first and most important thing parents should do to help their children is to ____________.
A. provide them with a safer environment B. lower their expectations for them
C. get them into more touch with other people D. set a good model for them to follow
55. What conclusion can be drawn from the passage
A. Anxiety, though unavoidable, can be dealt with.
B. Children’s anxiety has been described to be far too serious.
C. Children’s anxiety can be got rid of with more parental care.
D. Anxiety, if properly controlled, may help fit children for life.

The day when Dad announced that we were going to visit Ah Mah, my grandmother, I was completely taken by surprise. Almost immediately, I looked over to my mother who gave me slight-nod as though to confirm what my father had just said. By that time, I was really confused. First of all, my mother and Ah Mah never got along. They’d speak with each other nicely, but deep down they hated each other. I guess it was because Ah Mah was so demanding. Besides, in the whole eighteen years of my life, we had visited her only twice. The first time was for the funeral of Ah Yeh, my grandfather, and the second time was for Ah Mah’s seventy’s birthday. On both these occasions, all friends and family had to attend.
Now this didn’t mean that Ah Mah never came to visit us. She came at least twice a year-Chinese New Year and my brother’s birthday. She never came to my birthdays, and this made me dislike her. What made me dislike her even more was the fact that she liked boys more than ing from Mainland China, she had a way of thinking that boys were more valuable than girls. She made her prejudice clear when she announced that she would leave all her belongings to the men in the family and nothing to the women after she died. I hated her way of thinking; therefore, she and I never got along.
No matter how hard I tried to avoid going to Ah Mah’s house, I had to go. So, before I knew it, I was in the car, headed towards Ah Mah’s house. The ride there seemed long and endless, and I dreaded having to see Ah Mah. Finally, after two long hours of boring Chinese opera music and intense heat, we arrived.
As I got out of the car, I saw many cars parked around Ah Mah’s house. Uncle Harry stood at the door, urging us to go in quickly. My father ran to the door and we all followed. I saw all my relatives there. Aunt Lanny, Aunt Nancy, and Aunt Ping were sitting on the sofa sniffling and wiping their tears, each with a little handkerchief, and Uncle Mon and Uncle Tan were standing near the window, shaking their heads and whispering. Uncle Harry told us to follow him upstairs. I knew that he was leading us to Ah Mah’s room because, as we neared the end of the hallway, there was a strong smell of “Bak Fa Yau,” a strong scented body oil, in the air. Ah Mah always wore this because she thought it smelled nice, but we couldn’t stand it.
Uncle Harry told me to stay outside as my parents and my brother went in Ah Mah’s room. During this time I wondered, did Mother do something wrong Maybe Ah Mah was giving her a lecture. Or maybe… .
Thoughts like this kept racing through my mind until my parents and my brother came out. Mother was crying.
“Mom, what’s wrong Did Ah Mah yell at you again What’s the matter with her ” I asked angrily in Cantonese.
I pushed my way through and forced the door wide open. “What’s your… ” And my eyes fell on her almost bald head. I froze. After a few seconds, she motioned to me. Slowly, I walked over to her.
She was skinny and wrinkled. She looked tired, and her eyes were barely open. Most of her hair had fallen out; there were just a couple of strands left on her head. She held her trembling hands out to me, but I was afraid to touch her. She pointed to her desk and whispered, “Fut ju.” The “fut ju” was her most prized possession, her sacred Buddha beads. I went over to her desk and took the “fut ju.” By now, I was crying, even without my knowing, and I just stared at her. She called my name, panting and struggling. She said, “Keep…forgive me…”
I ran over to her and tried to seize her outstretched hand, but it was too late.

第二节 阅读下列材料,从所给的六个选项(A、B、C、D、E和F)中,选出符合各小题要求的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有一项是多余选项。
The following people are expressing their thoughts (61--65) to show their concern for food, environment and so on. After that are pieces of related information (A--F) . Now decide which piece of information would be most suitable for the thought and idea mentioned in questions 61---65 and mark your answer letter (A---F) on your answer sheet. There is one extra paragraph which you do not need to use.
______61. How I was struck by the clear water and fresh air in my childhood! But everything has changed, that is, the clear water and fresh air are nowhere to be found again as they were. Above all, a great deal of waste hardly rots away.
______62. More and more people are beginning to have a good knowledge of the importance of a safer and cleaner environment, which in turn forces the business to be cleaned up.
______63. Organic products are getting more and more popular among people, but we should know the fact that organic products might also have something to do with pesticides.
______64. I`m very much fond of growing some vegetables of my own in my small garden, for many vegetables on sale in markets are actually becoming more and more dangerous as a result of widespread pesticides.
______65. Nowadays it is very convenient for consumers to find and buy green food in supermarkets as they are clearly marked.
A. "Organic produce is always better, "Gold said. "The food is free of pesticides(农药) ,and you are generally supporting family farms instead of large farms. And more often than not it is locally grown and seasonal, so it is more tasty." Gold is one of a growing number of shoppers buying into the organic trend, and supermarkets across Britain are counting on more like him as they grow their organic food business.
B. Market research shows that Gold and others who buy organic food can generally give clear reasons for their preferences - but their knowledge of organic food is far from complete. For example, small amounts of pesticides can be used on organic products. And about three quarters of organic food in Britain is not local but imported to meet growing demand. "The demand for organic food is increasing by about one third every year, so it is a very fast-growing market, "said Sue Flock, a specialist in this line of business.
C. Many cities around the world today are heavily polluted. Careless methods of production and lack of consumer demand for environment-friendly products have contributed to the pollution problem. One result is that millions of tons of glass, paper, plastic, and metal containers are produced, and these are difficult to get rid of.
D. However, today, more and more consumers are choosing "green" and demanding that the products they buy should be safe for the environment. Before they buy a product, they ask questions like these: "Will this shampoo damage the environment " "Can this metal container be reused or can it only be used once "
E. Only a few years ago, it was impossible to find green products in supermarkets, but now there are hundreds. Some supermarket products carry labels(标签) to show that the product is green. Some companies have made the manufacturing(制造) of clean and safe products their main selling point and emphasize it in their advertising.
F. The concern for a safer and cleaner environment is making companies rethink how they do business. No longer will the public accept the old attitude of "Buy it, use it, throw it away, and forget it." The public pressure is on, and gradually business is cleaning up its act.

Possible version for a defender:
It is quite true that there are many ads in our everyday life. They are broadcast on TV, printed in newspapers and even posted in the panies spend so much money on ads that will encourage us to buy their products. In my opinion, it is the modern society that gives birth to the development of advertising which has gone hand in hand with the development of TV and other media. Ads are in fact so helpful that customers can make a better choice of what to buy. Since the prices may be reduced as a result of advertisements, why are you so critical about the ads In addition, Ads are also used to make people aware of the social problems and government policies containing new information. As you needn’t pay the expenses of the ads, why don’t you enjoy sense of humour that will make you informed of the changing world around you
Possible version for a critic:
There are too many ads in our everyday life. They are broadcast on TV, printed in newspapers and even posted in the bus. Actually ads are found panies spend so much money on ads that will encourage us to buy their products. In my opinion, some of the ads are so annoying that I really hate to read or watch any of them. For example, when you are watching TV, some of the ads will make you feel uncomfortable because they last a longer time than you can bear/stand. Some of the ads mislead us by showing some photos of pretty girls as if we would become as beautiful as they are if we buy their product. Therefore we must keep an eye out for ‘hidden information’, distinguish fiction and facts so that we will not become easy target of the bad ads.
