How men first learnt to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we have really known is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions, and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds, and which could be written down. These sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, are called words. The power of words, then, lies in their associations – the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increases. Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar.
56.According to the author of the passage, .
A.men, as well as animals, invented certain sounds to express thoughts
B.the origin language is a difficult question
C.words did not have written form at first
D.words came from sounds

A.it can associate the things in the world with the ideas in our minds
B.one word is connected with another
C.it can associate one person with another
D.it can recall to us the events of our past
58.In order not to make our speech silly and vulgar, we should .
A.use words that can move men to tears
B.choose words with care and accuracy
C.become a master of words
D.use words which sing like music
59.The best title for this passage would be .
A.The meaning of words B.The nature of words
C.The invention of words D.The power of words

I’m usually fairly doubtful about any research that concludes that people are either happier or unhappier or more or less certain of themselves than they were 50 years ago. While any of these statements might be true, they are practically impossible to prove scientifically. Still, I was shocked by a report which concluded that today’s children are significantly more anxious than children in the 1950s. In fact, the analysis showed, normal children aged 9 to 17 show a higher level of anxiety today than children who were treated for mental illness 50 years ago.
Why are America’s kids so stressed The report provides two main causes: increasing physical separation-brought on by high divorce rates and less involvement in community ,among other things-and a growing opinion that the world is a more dangerous place.
Given that “we can’t turn the clock back”, adults can still do plenty to help the next generation.
At the top of the list is nurturing(培养)a better appreciation of the limits of individualism. No child is an island. Strengthening social ties helps build communities and protect individuals against stress.
To help kids build stronger connections with others, you can turn off TVs and computers. Your family will thank you later. They will have more time for face-to-face relationships, and they will get more sleep.
Limit the amount of virtual violence your children are exposed to. It’s not just video games and movies; children see a lot of murder and crime on the local news.
Keep your expectations for your children reasonable. Many highly successful people never attend Harvard or Yale.
Make exercise part of your daily work. It will help you deal with your own anxieties and provide a good model for your kids. Sometimes anxiety is unavoidable. But it doesn’t have to ruin your life.
60.The author thinks that the conclusions of any research about people’s state of mind are .
A.surprising B.unbelievable
C.false D.questionable
61.What does the author mean when he says,“we can’t turn the clock back”in the third paragraph
A.It’s impossible to slow down the pace of change.
B.The social reality children are facing cannot be changed.
C.Lessons learned from the past should not be forgotten.
D.It’s impossible to forget the past.
62.The first and most important thing parents should do to help their children is .
A.to provide them with a safer environment
B.to lower their expectations for them
C.to get them more involved socially
D.to set a good model for them to follow
63.What conclusion can be drawn form the passage
A.Anxiety, though unavoidable, can be dealt with.
B.Children’s anxiety has been very much exaggerated(夸大).
C.Children’s anxiety can be removed with more parents’ care.
D.Anxiety, if properly controlled, may help children become mature.

Taravura is as beautiful as it sounds. It is everything a pacific city should be. You might have imagined a seafront line with palm trees, sea-washed beaches as white as the waves, a busy port trading in all the products of the South Seas; you might have dreamed about houses made of dried grass standing among tall trees, brightly painted wooden churches, and open-air markets full of happy, friendly people, dressed as colorfully as the flowers and the fruits they sell. If you have ever thought that you might find all these things in one place, you were thinking of Taravura.
Taravura is all things to all men. It is a capital city, with international hotels that will give you the warmest welcome you have ever received; with streets of buildings old and new, and of stones big and small; with shops full of bargains, and parks and gardens full of things to see and do. Government House and the President’s Palace are there.
The international airport has regular and direct flights to and from cities all over South-east Asia, Australia and the South Pacific. Yet Taravura does not feel big: few of its buildings are higher than the trees; None of its streets is so full of traffic that it is difficult to cross, even at the busiest time of the day; and from all parts of the city you can see either Mount Bari and its brothers, the Endi Mountains, to the north, or the sky-blue sea to south.. Nowhere in Taravura are you very far from nature.
But do not be deceived into thinking that because Taravura is small among capital cities , you will have done everything worth doing within a day . Taravura is a mine of golden opportunities . ST. Cecilia’s Cathedral , for example , contains many pieces of local art work; and Komati Museum has a collection of paintings by South Pacific artists that is without equal in the world. For those who enjoy watching sports and games , you can be sure that somewhere in the city there is a national or an international team playing football, cricket or basketball; and for those who would rather play than watch , Taravura offers plenty of opportunities to try your hand at any sport.
Until you have been to Taravura, you have not visited the city of your dreams--- truly a heaven on earth.
68. “Taravura is all things to all men.” means _______.
there is nothing that you will not find there
everyone will find something there to suit him
there is as many things to do as there are men
the men will do anything you wish them to do
69. Taravura “does not feel big” in spite of the fact that ________.
It is a capital city with an airport and international hotels
Its streets are full of traffic at all time of the day
few of its buildings are higher than the trees
its buildings are old and new , its stores big and small
70. Nowhere in Taravura are you very far from nature in that______.
the open-air markets are full of flowers and fruits
the houses are made of grass and churches of wood
there are mountains on one side and sea on the other
there are parks and gardens full of things to see and do

There are two basic ways to see growth: one as a product, the other as a process. People have generally viewed personal growth as an external (外在的) result or a product that can easily be identified and measured. The worker who gets a rise, the student whose grades improve, the foreigner who learns a new language—all these examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts.
By contrast (对照) , the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine, since it is a journey and not the specific signposts or landmarks along the way.The process is not the road itself, but the attitudes, feelings people have , and their caution or courage, as they meet with new experiences and unexpected difficulties. In this process, the journey never really ends;there are always new ways to experience the world, new ideas to try, new challenges to accept.
In order to grow, to travel new roads, people need to have a willingness to take risks, to face the unknown, and to accept the possibility that they may “fail” at first. How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being is necessary for our ability to grow.Do we see ourselves as quick and curious If so, we tend to take more chances and be more open to unfamiliar experiences.Do we think we’re shy and indecisive Then our sense of fear can cause us to hesitate, to move slowly, and we think we are slow to adapt (适应) change or that we’re not smart enough to deal with a new challenge. Then we are likely to take a more passive role or not try at all.
These feelings of insecurity (不安全) and self-doubt are both unavoidable and necessary if we are to change and grow.If we protect ourselves too much, then we stop growing. We become trapped inside a shell of our own making.
71.In the author’s eye, one who views personal growth as a process would ______.
A.succeed in climbing up the social ladder
B.grow up from his own achievements
C.face difficulties and take up challenges
D.aim high and reach his goal each time
72.Which of the following can be viewed as the process of personal growing
A.Our manager was always willing to accept new challenges.
B.Jane won the first prize in the speech competition.
C.Jerry picked up French during his stay in Paris.
D.Father’s salary rose from 5, 000 to 7,000.
73.For personal growth, the author is in favor of all the following EXCEPT _______.
A.being curious about more changes
B.being quick in self-adaptation
C.having an open mind to new experiences
D.staying away from failures and challenges
74.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage
A.It is not so easy to measure personal growth.
B.To try and fail on the new road facing the unknown is unavoidable.
C.There are only two ways to see a person’s growth.
D.If you are too shy to take any risks in life, you cannot grow up.
75.The best title for this passage should be ______.
A.Facing New Challenges B.Growth—Product or Process
C.Two Basic Ways of Growth D.Overcoming Internal Fears

Why do we go to university
Some think that a university education will make us more competitive for job hunting and therefore it will be easier to find a well-paid job. Others think that we can get more knowledge in universities.
Personally, I think going to university will certainly broaden my horizon and improve my personality by working with people from different places. I will learn to be more independent and confident while staying away from my parents. Besides universities provide good chances to accumulate social experience and develop communicating ability, which will help to lay a foundation for my future work. What I believe is that the higher quality we have, the grater contribution we can make to our motherland.
