Teenagers at Tarkington elementary school in Chicago, America started their first day of classes at a school where flowering plants grow on the roof. It’s one of America’s small but growing number of environmental—friendly schools. It is special because it is in a major city better known for towers of steel and concrete and not in some small town or tree—hugging city.
Different from other Chicago buildings, Tarkington has a living green roof planted above the gymnasium. It’s a garden of self—sustaining flowering plants that don’t need much water and can endure Chicago’s weather.
“It looks much better than other schools,” said 12—year—old Dulce Vega. He was excited at the thought of having science classes on the roof. If the students are lucky they might even see birds nesting there.
The soil and plants will help keep the building warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Rainwater draining (排水) into the soil will be directed to a nearby pond.
The school also is designed to use 30 percent less water than expected for a building of its size and gets half of its electricity from renewable resources. It has a reflective covering to reduce the amount of heat getting in.
Aside from saving on costs of water and energy, the school is exciting for what it can do for its students. It is believed that the air quality in a “green” building is better than other schools, and that students won’t be sick as much and may even perform better.
What’s more, the green roof will offer lessons on life cycles and plant life.

书面表达:
One possible version:
At present, Internet Slang, such as “GG”, “MM”, “Xia Mi”, has become many teenagers’ pet phrases, appearing in their homework, reports, and even compositions in the National Entrance Exam.
There are different opinions on Internet Slang. Some students think Internet Slang is vivid, fashionable and full of humor and intelligence. Besides, it makes chatting on the Internet quicker.
However, some other students think Internet Slang lacks depth of thought and it is too simple. Above all, it is still not so popular as to be understood and accepted by most people. If the words are used too often, people will just be confused, and sometimes resulting in misunderstanding.
In my opinion, there are always two sides to everything. Living in the Information Age, if we don’t know these Internet Slang, we seem to lag behind the times . It will be OK as long as these terms are used correctly in proper situations.
